From my previous journal - I thought posting I was doing something would actually make me do something.. It didn't work..

It just slid off my radar.. :-\

      *doh!*

Maybe if I post it - I'll actually work on it :-)

I'm in the very early stages on working on a wiki-based project (personal non-work related).. - any more info then that.. is classified :-)

I need more pics for my gallery (or maybe not)

Sometimes I get reminded (Thank you!) that Life hasn't really bitten me in the butt yet.. simply because people that care about me - have kept the corks on the teeth.. I can't wait for when the corks come off *shiver*

I really do have great respect toward people who are in life with it's teeth at full bare...

and soon I will be there too and hopefully I will stand teeth holes and everything and still stand up and smile and say.. ok what's next :-D

Birthday Day wasn't too bad.. It was cool..

Cake and Ice Cream and Cookies.. (this year I share the calories :-P )

Presents were good too, but I always find that the best gifts I find.. is that I have people in my life that make my life worth living to reach the next year and the year after etc.. (even if they aren't really actually doing it, it's a silent cheer on saying - Go! Go! Go! )

Thanks for the B-day wishes and the offers for me to stay on your lawns.. (you know who you are ;-) )

p.s - (Geek Alert) Having a computer having RAID turned on even though there is only 1 Hard Drive in the machine is a head scratcher that makes me say Huh? Why? (and does cause major headaches when creating dual-boots with Vista and WindowsXP (when it's turned on ugh!)

Scan your PC for viruses, spyware, adware, Tribbles and zero-day threats

Now even Klingon speakers can scan their computers for security threats.

Use Sophos's Klingon Anti-Virus to quickly perform an on-demand scan and find viruses, spyware, adware, zero-day threats, Betazoid sub-ether porn diallers and Tribbles that your existing protection might have missed. The software can be run without deactivating your current anti-virus software. Phasers can be left set to stun.
Why did we translate it into Klingon?
<Need some blurb here> Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Duis consequat odio vel risus fermentum at hendrerit sapien malesuada. </end blurb>
      Test your existing anti-virus protection

      * Scans without the need to uninstall or disable your existing anti-virus.
      * Runs on Windows 2000/XP/2003/Vista.
This software has compatibility issues with the version of msxml4.dll used by cloaking devices on Romulan-modded D7-class battle cruisers. Installing this software on such vessels is punishable by ordeal of Ginst'a'Ed.
      * Uses a single scan to detect viruses, spyware and adware - including zero-day threats.
      * Updates automatically for 30 Galactic standard days.

      RE Yanni et al.

Shrug. I don't really have an opinion one way or another. I have my own share of New Age music. I think it has its place in the world of music and don't particularly look down my nose at it. The "Voices" thing he's doing now (I took a look at his trailer over at YouTube) seems like a nice introduction to different vocal styles to an audience that otherwise might not hear Latin or Operatic music. The thing is, there are lots of really talented musicians on the planet, but what is required to be financially successful at being a musician is a combination of talent, luck, and promotion. This guy Yanni has figured out a way to make his (what is in my opinion) pretty bland music very approachable and popular all over the world.

I am in an ongoing argument with my music advisor, himself a very talented modern-style composer, about the value of popular (pop) music. He feels it is a waste of airspace, if you will, but I contend that music and rhythm is something that human beings have a thirst for, and that everyone doesn't have the education or sophistication or time to listen to symphonies or jazz and that "music soothes the wild beast." Personally, I've gotten to the point where almost all pop music from 1990 forward sounds rehashed; it's pretty rare that I ever download any new pop songs any more because I just hear the same old thing in every tune... which is really disappointing to me because I really like dance music.

Anyway, my opinion of Yanni is "meh" but "whatever". Incidentally, I have the same opinion about Mormons.

squeamishness? - this is coming from a doctor who seems to know how to get our stomach churning sometimes :o) (thankfully with well advance warning 1+cool) with Eyeballs! (but it's what you do.. and we would missed it if you stopped.

No no but that was all stuff meant to help people in the long run so they could see or not lose what vision they had so the gross out bit was negated by the overall positive outcome. Also, eyes aren't gross. They're shiny and white and there is almost no blood. You know what is gross? Try the nose and mouth. Inside peoples' mouths is repulsive. I'd much rather look at some peoples' bottoms than in their mouths. I've almost vomited from the nastiness of the oral cavity of some patients. Gah there are some horrid rotting teeth out there... and I don't even want to talk about snot. GAH. I don't know how dentists and ENT guys get out of bed every day and go to work. GAH.

But anyway, when I play a game, and I'm going to kill stuff, I want it to be stuff I won't feel guilty about, like, I don't want to kill cuddly kittens or clean cut American soldiers from Iowa. I want to kill Nazi zombie alien robots, yeah? I mean, who feels bad about killing Nazi zombie alien robots? They's Nazi's (so they're bad), zombies (so already dead), aliens (so... they bleed weird colors) and robots... so the blood is all just brake fluid anyway. So yeah. Not human soldiers. Certainly not civilians. Gah. This game wasn't really my cup of tea...

Woot! That vid "Blind" was definitely awesome. I love when folks who can animate take renders and do new things with them. It's like what Laird and Major_Dump were doing in Halo Unyielding. To defend myself though, I *think* (you would know better than me) that the fight scenes in "Tales of the Past 3" were done with the Model Viewer and were all in-game animations, which is a challenge in itself.

Computers in the house: 8 Macs (two servers, 3 machines for the kids, my wife's mac, my desktop, my laptop), 5 unix boxes (all servers), 2 PCs (one is a generic, home-built for $400 back in 2003, in order to play Halo PC - used now for compatibility testing for web design projects, the other is a dirt-cheap consumer box used to monitor equipment that needs an RS-232 port for connections). There are a whole lot of non-running machines, as well - but that's all that's on and/or functional.

Ooh.... very cool video about the blind artist.

It seems very likely to me that a person who was not sighted could understand perspective.

Especially since so many people WITH sight seem to have utterly no clue about how to draw perspective at all.

The train ride will be a blast, it's basically an all day thing. Ricky and I are planning on recording a show on the train, maybe even do a little open discussion / fun with whoever is there with us.

Either way, I look forward to hanging out at MFF, and I'll cross my fingers that Montreal is in the cards for you too.

Thanks for the comment, yeah it was looking pretty stale. :)

FYI, a handful of us are planning on taking a train from NYC to Montreal. I'm told the ticket is somewhere in the neighborhood of $70. Gonna save us a boatload of cash. Tune in over at my forum when you're ready to coordinate plans. I think most of us are looking at Queens/Brooklyn for our NYC stay... maybe we can get at the same hotel and actually know about it this time! :)

One is: I don't know if you knew I FINALLY dinged 60 with one of my characters:
      www.youtube.com/watch?v=wOjXklP6PzI

Second is something I mentioned in my last journal, which was this www.wegame.com/ website. Is there any buzz about this? It sort of tastes like it is more corporation-based than fan-based....

EDIT: No... three things: I still don't know the reference from that RPG... so you just have to tell me or watch me go crazy from not knowing.

That's actually my photobucket account. Those are my pictures as I sent them to the LAN group for everyone to pick over. The Gunslingers have had a couple LAN's over the last year that I ended up in pictures at as well. As far as the public shooting range thing goes, and I'm sure Oboe will have some very interesting things to say about that tomorrow or the next day or whenever... there are actually tons of ranges around CT. Wallingford, Guilfird, and the best one I eventually decided to go to in Bridgeport.

      The Bridgeport Shooting Range

      www.bridgeportshootingrange.com/

is probably the nicest civilian range I have ever been to. And even though the neighborhood looks like a shooting range as well the parking lot is fenced in and the facilities are top notch.

I meant neither sarcasm nor criticism. I was just enjoying the images without captions and expressing that I liked that way of presenting them. I tend to over-explain everything and go on and on and on about each and every thing that passes through my mind and I admire the restraint you show by just putting images up for people to interpret as they will. Also, I was being random. As is my wont.

You know, like, "Here is a picture. I won't pass judgment on it or explain it. It just exists. It IS. It isn't up to me to tell you how to interpret it or whether it is good or bad. That is up to the viewer."

Yeah I was one of those people. I had to keep buying the earlier books every time a new one came out because in the intervening years I would lose the copies I had bought previously and I didn't want to read the new one without recalling the story before. In fact in a foreward to one of the middle books he joked about some fan mail he got... a picture of a teddy bear chained to a chair... the writer sent the note "Release the next Gunslinger book of the bear gets it!"

My favorite was Wizard and Glass. The story of Roland's lost love and how he was charged with his quest blew my mind. WHen I realized what was going to happen to Susan Delgado I literally had to put the book down for a few days. I had become that attached to the characters. The last three books felt a little rushed to me and after being used to waiting for so long for each one to come out I felt a little spoiled with the quick release. I understand why he did it. But I wish he had taken a little more time with them. I felt like Song of Susannah was a rehash of Wizard and Glass (with the whole 'preperation for a soon to attack powerful enemy' thing) and not a favorable one. But all told the story as a whole has to be one of the best ever in my opinion.
