The ReturnedIt's been over a year since I've written a journal on here, but lately I've been feeling the itch to talk about things I've been watching like I used to. The fun part is that lately I've been watching more TV shows than movies as that medium has been simply outstanding lately. So here we go:
Vicky and I just finished watching The Returned last night, if you are at all into the technical aspects of filmmaking/tv shows you need to do yourself a favor and check out what Sundance Channel has been doing lately. The Returned, Rectify and Top of the Lake are 3 of the most visually and emotionally stunning shows that I've seen recently.
I think this is largely because they are slow, contemplative shows that are character driven instead of plot driven. This may turn some people off and made Rectify in particular feel a lot longer than 6 episodes, but it is flat out some of the best film making I've ever seen in any medium and will only help push TV as a medium forward into the space that so many contemplative indie films currently occupy.
The Returned though, is French (subtitled) a "zombie" show about characters inexplicably returning from the dead and the trouble that causes over the course of a about a week. It is a show full of mysteries with few answers and the best comparison I've seen is Twin Peaks. It is one of the most best shot and wonderfully lit shows I've seen recently and it ruminates and contemplates the meaning of human existence and suicide with the very best existential plays and movies. I would highly recommend anyone that wants to delve into the unknown to give it a chance.
