I love the Flaming Lips, these guys are absolutely insane in concert, and it surprised me a bit to see there was no thread for them. So here it is, the Flaming Lips Thread, lyrics images, stories, etc.

And please, let the only flaming going on in here be the Flaming Lips

I saw these guys a few years back on the unlimited sunshine tour. This was an amazing show, Modest Mouse (before they were popular), Cake, and Flaming Lips. It was magical, people dressed in animal suits jumping around on stage, big clear beach ball type things bouncing around out in the crowd, and Wayne wearing a suit in a giant clear plastic bubble spreading fake blood all over his face, it was great.

A great question to kick things off as well, what is your favorite Flaming Lips song and why?

Mine is Do You Realize? It's lyrics would be depressing, but it is put into such upbeat music that you can't help but feel great about life.

New Flaming Lips in 2006! Can't wait.

I can't name a favourite song, really, but The Soft Bulletin is by far my favourite Flaming Lips album.

Yea, off of that album, I'd have to say Race For The Price is my favorite. It's such an upbeat tune. That's what I love about those guys. Any time I feel down, I just pop in some Flaming Lips, and I instantly feel better.

i would have to say that Yoshimi is my favorite of their albums. but it might hold sway because it was their first album that i actually listened to.

they do amazing covers. such as kylie minogue's - can't get you out of my head

has anyone found their avril lavigne cover. i heard it once, it was brilliant, and now it's lost.

Should check out the Postal Service remix of Do You Realize? it's awesome. It still has the singing of Wayne, but it is remixed with the Postal Service style. I also really like Flaming Lips cover of Seven Nation Army by The White Stripes, surprisingly it is more hardcore, they seemed to have added more distortion, but it still works real well. I'm really disappointed that I haven't been able to find that Avril Lavigne cover you were talking about, it sounds so jesusfied, I've been searching left and right but can't find it. I can't wait for it to come it, I gotta save my money, I'll probably get the string quartet tribute as well, since they usually do some pretty cool stuff.

Sadly, I have only really been exposed to Yoshimi. I own Fearless Freaks, yet have not watched it :-( .

One of my favorite songs is "Thank You Jack White"

I'd say Yoshimi is their best stuff, as far as personal preference goes, so it's probably good that that's what you were first exposed to. That's what I first heard as well.

yeah, it seems the lips are forever going to be a fringe band. they'll always be popular in some circles but they can't seem to buy a big break, or a big record release. and maybe, in all reality, that's a good thing. it keeps their fanbase dedicated and small enough that the record execs don't screw around with their music and attempt to force them to make "better, more accesible" music. [which could essentially destroy the lips patented eccentricity]

in random news, Justin Timberlake, yes the J.Tim., once played live with the lips. it appears as if he might be a well rounded musician after all. he played bass for a full set dressed in a shark plushie.

also, the Lips "sessions at AOL" is a fun watch, and i think some, if not all of it, is available to stream whether or not you're an AOL subscriber.

Yea, as much as I enjoy seeing bands get credit that they long deserve, I don't know if I'd say it ruins their music, but they usually have to change their style to get what they deserve, and then, their music is below par and they don't really deserve, I consider Weezer's Green Album a prime example of this, but their change was more to do with the change of a bassist. Modest Mouse was lucky enough to make a success with Good News, but they also went into more upbeat tunes as well. It wasn't a disappointment like Weezer's more recent albums (not bad, but very far below what Blue and Pinkerton were) but it was a change for them. I hope to all hell that Lips don't change up their style to make it big, I think it would be a huge disappointment, and then I wouldn't be able to listen to their old stuff to cheer me up because it would only make me think about what they did and I would be spun down a hole of non-happy music.

    OMG!one!pi!!!

I just saw them last night at the Kuyahoga Festival. They were amazing. It helped that security let me and my friends into the pavillion (Ohio people, you know how the lawn is at Blossom). But their performance was breathtaking. I had to suffer through Death Cab to see them, but damn it was worth it. I'd heard how cool their shows were, and I had seen clips, but they still blew me away. "The Patch" and "Do You Realize?" were both highlights, as was their encore, a terrific "War Pigs."

If you get a chance, see them. If not, enjoy Hell!

I used to have the Yoshimi CD downloaded on my old computer, but it sort of died, so... I'm very sad about that, but I suppose I'll just have to pull a lil' bit of money out of my savings account to buy it, right? I have the newest Flaming Lips CD, and I love it dearly.

Saw the Lips in Boston last night. They're always a great show, full of life, energy, and a big bowl of fun. Only the lips could cause a 32 year old man to want nothing more than to be able to knock a big balloon in the air. Well... it was about an 8' balloon. My favorite fan was the bear costume wearing bearded guy with an Oklahoma flag draped over his shoulders.

I'm torn between the Soft Bulletin and Yoshimi for best album. Some of my favorite songs were on SB, but I thought Yoshimi was a better 'album' as it's songs work together to tell a complete story. My favorite song sound though has to go back to the "wop wop" noise in "Talkin' 'Bout the Smiling Deathporn Immortality Blues" from the album "Hit to death in the future head" followed closely by the same voice doing "Won't you" at one point in the song "Be my head" from the same album.

Edit: My bad... Be My Head is on the album Transmission From the Satellite Heart.
