Hey all! Just wanted to start a thread for anything, food/activities outside of convention based, you would recommend to first timers at RTX. I have noticed this being a common topic among newbies so feel free to share anywhere people should be checking out during their time in Austin!

    - See the bats that live under South Congress :D  http://www.batsinaustin.com/

    - Texas state capital is actually really neat. You can get a little self guided tour map and walk around a whole bunch of neat monuments.

    - A bit more of a walk, but the Graffiti Park at Castle Hill is just neat. It's an open common space where graffiti is not only legal, but encouraged. https://havingfuninthetexassun.com/2016/01/14/graffiti-park-at-castle-hills-hope-outdoor-gallery-austin/

My friend and I had breakfast at La Cafe Crepe one morning and it was absolutely my favorite food of the entire weekend. It's already on my list of places I'm going to go again this year, which I'm trying to keep short to save money.

Home Slice is probably one of the best pizza places I've ate at. Also if you have a car (because it's kind of far from the convention center) is Rudy's for Texas BBQ. There's also a RT video of the definitive best restaurants to check out when at RTX.

Last year I went to Ironworks BBQ and Gus’ Fried Chicken and they were so good. They’re on my list to visit again this year.

Iron Works is sooooooo good and literally right next to the convention center too! Along with there I frequent The Cedar Door as well.

As an old time Austinite, I recommend:

24 diner for comfort food http://24diner.com/

Casino El Camino for a damn good burger. http://www.casinoelcamino.net/

Kerbey Lane Cafe for 3am breakfast / queso.

Iron Works is great if proximity to the convention center is a concern, amazing sides. But I found Terry Black's to have better meat (assuming you're looking for dinner since Rudy's runs out of meat and closes mid-afternoon). Homeslice is the best pizza I've had in my life.

Some other places I recommend, since I haven't had a lot of time to sit down are:

Barton Springs - natural swimming hole.

Manuel's Mexican Restaurant - haven't had a bad dish there yet.

Recess Arcade Bar - has a bunch of arcade games and obvi bevs. One of the few bars I go to on 6th.

The Cedar Door - I referenced it above. It's a bar and restaurant. Love the food and atmosphere. Only a few blocks from ACC.

Easy Tiger - beer garden with baked goods that are to die for!

That's all I can think of now. This will be my 6th RTX and I've kind of fallen into a pattern of frequent haunts so I'm hoping to try to new places this year!

Are you thinking Franklin's instead of Rudy's?

Yes I was. However, Rudy's is still a bit of a problem as there isn't one at all close the convention center.

Barton Springs is definitely awesome. Great swimming hole with a nice 12-foot drop that's safe for diving, and super dog-friendly. Last time I went we played fetch with a cute doggo by skipping rocks across the water.

I would suggest a few places around near research if you have a means of transportation, There are a few cool ramen spots around here that I frequent like Tatsu-ya and such also sushi, Home slice pizza is epic and so is death metal pizza on 6th street, I live here in Texas been so for like 13 years but there is always something cool to do.

Jim Jim's water ice is super good and refreshing for those hot Austin days during RTX just 2 blocks up from the convention center.

Voodoo Doughnuts if you have a sweettooth! Within walking distance, really outrageous choices (in a great way!) but no air conditioning so be prepared to be hot while in line to grab them

If you're looking for one meal to spend a bit more money on, I highly recommend Fogo de Chao! I always make sure to hit up lunch there with friends at least once during the weekend. A little ways away there is also Kura Sushi, a conveyor belt sushi joint. Just expect a decent wait if you go there!

Any thoughts on the Museum of the Weird? I saw it on Google maps, is it worth checking out?
