    Word of the day

    soteriology

    -noun

(the study of) doctrines of salvation.

Is there anything you can't study? Is there a study of studies? Also, I thought it was the study of sautéing.

    Word of the day

    promontory

    -noun

    1. a high point of land or rock projecting into the sea or other water beyond the line of coast; a headland.
    2. a bluff, or part of a plateau, overlooking a lowland.
    3. Anatomy: a prominent or protuberant part.

Having a part of your body described with a word that also means "headland" doesn't sound like it would be a compliment. "Wow, your nose is a real promontory!"

    Word of the day

Well, technically it's two words but that also depends on the definition of 'word' as a linguist would tell you :

    FM (frequency modulation)

    1. frequency modulation: a method of impressing a signal on a radio carrier wave by varying the frequency of the carrier wave.
    2. a system of radio broadcasting by means of frequency modulation.
    3. of, pertaining to, or utilizing such a system.

    also AM is "amplitude modulation".

Mathematically and in theory I understand what they mean but I have no idea what the practical difference is.

Without resorting to Wiki, my understanding has always been FM is more variation in the compression of the radio signals, whereas AM is more variation in the peaks and troughs of the signals. FM gets better quality, AM has better reach. A real physicist will be able to tell you why. And how wrong I am.
Maybe I'll wiki it after all...

    Mot du jour

    presque vu

    -noun

Failure to remember something, with the sense that recall is imminent. Also known as tip of the tongue. Related to that is the 'bathtub effect', the observation that, when trying to remember a word or name, people find it easier to recall the beginning and end of a lost item than the middle.

I don't actually speak any French but I know enough words in a few languages to pretend that I speak them. Also in written language, most Romanic and Germanic European languages are similar enough that I usually feel like I can get a general idea of the meaning.

    2. imperious or dictatorial.
    3. positive or assertive in speech, tone, manner, etc.

archaic. to make publicly known; publish.
Origin: 1375–1425; late Middle English < Latin dÄ«vulgÄtus made common property (past participle of dÄ«vulgÄre)

You could just divulgate more words of the day. That'd be good.
