    • Tokyo Passes Youth Ordinance Bill

What this pretty much means they are getting up and antsy about what content is in anime and manga that is aimed at young viewers

The full Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly approved the government's revised bill to amend the Youth Healthy Development Ordinance on Wednesday afternoon.

The current ordinance already prevents the sale and renting of "harmful publications" — materials that are "sexually stimulating, encourages cruelty, and/or may compel suicide or criminal behavior" to people under the age of 18. Bill 156 would require the industry to also regulate "manga, anime, and other images (except for real-life photography)" that "unjustifiably glorify or exaggerate" certain sexual or pseudo sexual acts. Another section of the revised bill would allow the government to directly regulate the above images if the depicted acts are also "considered to be excessively disrupting of social order" such as rape.

The assembly also approved a non-binding supplemental resolution urging newly designated harmful publications to be carefully regulated, with the work's merits based on artistic, social, and other criteria to be taken into account in the evaluation process.

The voluntary self-regulation clauses will go into effect on April 1 of next year, and the restrictions on sales and renting will go into effect on July 1.

Many people (like myself) are afraid of the possibility that this may effect areas such as the Jump magazines which One Piece, Dragon Ball, Nauto and other popular series that are generally aimed at young adolescent viewers are produced. However the Jump magazine publishers Shueisha had this to say....

Even more striking is the statement conveyed via newspiece on Jiji. At Shueisha’s rookie manga author awards ceremony, Shueisha senior managing director Mr. Torishima was quoted saying, “I want new manga authors to produce manga that would blow away [Tokyo Governor] Shintaro Ishihara.” A senior editor at Shueisha, Mr. Araki asks that manga authors “don’t let the chilling effect [of increased regulation] stop you from doing material you want to do. Jump will feature anything [we feel] is exciting [to read]“.

It’s clear the Big 10 have no intent to back down following their announcement to pull out of the Tokyo International Animation Fair, and event sponsored in part by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government.

      UPDATE

Recently stated by what is being called the "big 10," Shueisha being one of them, have stated in response to this bill that they will no longer be supproting the Tokyo Animation Festival, which is probably the biggest anime and manga related event in the world and is also sponsored by the Tokyo government (so I've read).

Personal thought: Although this does kinda lift some worries I am reminded in the back of my head that this still a business and if sales get affected due to the Jump series content then something might happen.

Anyway what are your thoughts on this matter?

Purely forgot about this one. Viz Media, who produces many English versions of popular manga, anime and the North American version of Shueisha's Shonen Jump, has launched their new site called Viz Anime. What is this site for? Streaming anime of course and other cool stuff. One Piece happens to be one smiley13.gif .

Even though the episodes seemed to just be linked to their Hulu channels, they seem to have a pretty nice setup for their own content here. Deserves to be checked out.

    • Straw Hot Pizza?

      One Piece Group

This is interesting. Apparently there is a pizza place called Staw Hat Pizza. FUNimation talks about this on their Facebook page.

The grand opening of the newest Straw Hat Pizza location opened up by the office, so the FUNimation gang decided to go there for lunch. There may be an official One Piece restaurant in Japan, but here we've got Straw Hat Pizza.

The whole One Piece crew was there. Sanji cooked, Luffy cleaned, and Nami took our order. And Zoro sliced the pizza. (ok, not really)

Felt it was worth mentioning. Pretty sure they're gonna get some One Piece cosplayers now. smiley0.gif

A week late on this but better late then never I guess. ANN reports that Shueisha announced they will be starting a new magazine called Super Strong Jump (Saikyo Jump). What it appears to feature when released are spinoffs of popular manga. One in particular will be Chopperman by Hirofumi Takei, a spinoff of Eiichiro Oda's One Piece.

... in Japan of course. ANN posted about an article on Oricon.co.jp (have google translators ready) which reports this is the first time this has ever happened for a One Piece volume.

One Piece Manga Volume 60 Sells 2 Million+ in 4 Days

The market survey firm Oricon reports that the 60th volume of Eiichiro Oda's One Piece pirate manga sold 2,094,123 copies between its first official day of sales (November 4) and November 7. It is the first book to sell over 2 million copies in its first week of sales since Oricon began reporting its book ranking charts in April of 2008. This volume topped the previous first-week sales record held by the 59th volume, which sold 1,852,541 copies in August.

The 60th volume already holds a record for having 3.4 million copies published in its first print run. The series overall now has 200 million copies in print. The official fan book One Piece Green -Secret Pieces- also went on sale on November 4 and sold 452,662 copies to rank #3 on the comic sales chart.
