So you all know that I am working at a camp this summer. This morning I began my 10 mile hike into base so I could talk to you all. After a few miles I ran into what I would estimate being a 200 lbs black bear. Now I have been camping pretty much all my life. What I have always been told when you encounter a bear is to stand your ground, make yourself look big, and make lots of noise to scare away the bear. In all my years of camping, backpacking, and mountaineering this is the first time that I have had to use such bear frightening techniques. Now back to the story, I was on the trail and the bear was maybe 50 or so yards ahead of me also on the trail. She was a nice golden brown. She didn't do anything. She wasn't on her hind legs, she was on all fours just looking at me. So the first thing I do is widen my stance. Then I put my arms up in the air. I assume I looked something like a gian t letter X. The bear did not move. She just looked at me like I was some kind of idiot. So I decided I needed to say something to scare the bear away. So what do I think of to say? I started singing "Take me out to the ball game" There was no hesitation, that was just the first thing that popped into my head. So I stood there, arms in the air like Matt Holliday just hit a grand slam. I channeled my best Harry Caray and started belting out the song at the top of my lungs. The bear immediately ran away. But I went through the song maybe 5 or 6 times.

I guess she wasn't a cubs fan!
