Leaving for Manhattan at 7:30 tomorrow morning. Having a big ol' family reunion/early thanksgiving/early christmas/birthday celebrations for my mom and sister.

Stupid family, always interrupting my Halo time.

    • Life Update

      Alex_vanPutten

I've got a job now. I'm working at another movie theater. That seems to be all I can get. It's unfortunate because the pay is crap and so are the hours, but I've been handed a light in these dark times.

My family, or part of it, is moving back to my town, into the old house we still haven't managed to sell. The power and water and gas will be turned back on, and I will not have to pay rent anymore. I'm extremely happy about this because I doubt I'd be able to pay rent next month, despite having a job. Gas prices are WAY up in California (my fellow Californians will empathize), and I drive nearly twice as much as I had to last year, when I got more hours and more money than I do now.

I also used my credit card way too much when I was unemployed, once using it to pay my rent. I completely used up my credit line, and couldn't make payments on it for two months. That account is now cancelled, and I will be slowly paying it off over the span of several months.

While I was unemployed, my diet got terrible. I was subsisting mostly on tiny meals with little to no nutrition. At the very worst, I had maybe a small bowl of plain spaghetti to eat once a day. This means I've lost a lot of weight. Like, 20-30-ish pounds. Weight that I put a lot of time and energy into gaining while hitting the gym 3 times a week for several months.

I can see my ribs. I shouldn't be able to see my ribs. I feel skinny. Scrawny. I have no confidence in my appearance. Other than my goatee, which looks incredible, and if I had my camera (which is being used by a friend) or a functioning phone, I'd show you. It's excellent.

OH YEAH. My phone is broken. Nothing serious, just the backlight, but it will cost me nearly $40 to fix, if I do it myself.

I'm sick right now, but I'm getting better. A horrible hangover turned into a worse fever, which got better in a week, but left me with a terrible cough and sinus problems for two more weeks. One of my ears is popped and the other isn't, and there is a very loud ringing sound. I might have to go see an ear doctor about this, because it's really starting to worry me.

TL;DR, things are shitty, but they'll get better soon.

The plan from here is to move up to Los Angeles within a year. Hopefully by next semester, so I can do a couple classes and pursue a career in the film industry. I've made a lot of important connections, I've been adding to my reel almost constantly, and I think I'm ready for the move to tinseltown. I think I can do it.

But I won't be editing this.

GET IT?!?!? IT'S BECAUSE I'M DRUNK RIGHT NOW.

I honestly don't know why I'm writing this right now. I should just work on my script, and really test out this "writing drunk" thing. It's working pretty well so far.

Might as well. Got a fridge full of beer that I neglected on the fourth ('MER'CA).
So maybe I'll give it a little attention.

    • So, I want to get a laptop

      Alex_vanPutten

When I get a steady job again, I'll be saving up for a number of things. One of these being a laptop. I need it for school, and work (film), and that's about it.

Because I need it to run the entire Adobe Suite, I'll need it to be very powerful. I've toyed with the idea of also making sure to buy a laptop I can dual-boot as a mac, but that hardly seems relevant, now that Apple has completely ruined Final Cut, the only program I needed that would require me to boot up a mac.

(I'm not hating on macs, I love them. When they're new. But they're so damn expensive and I just don't need one, realistically. Please no mac vs. pc arguments. ( >>implying my journals are that popular anymore))

I wish I could build my own laptop as easily as I built my desktop.

Any suggestions on where to start? I'm looking for reliability, speed, affordability, and upgradeability.

    • Dor L' Dor

      Alex_vanPutten

For the last several months, I've been director of photography on a documentary about a holocaust survivor. We've finished all our interviews so far, but there's still plenty left to shoot.

I was just informed today that we have a website up! How exciting! I'm a sucker for viral marketing. Ask anyone.

      http://dorldorjoshandjoe.com/

Err... That's the worst website I've ever seen.

But I guess it covers the basics. Here's some more detail:

Dor L' Dor is an idea in Hebrew culture that means the passing of a story from one generation to the next. And that's exactly what we're showing in this documentary. Joe is recounting his life's story to my friend, Josh, on film, so that it might be preserved for all time, so our children and our children's children may prevent anything so terrible as the Holocaust from happening again.

This is really an incredible and inspirational project, and if I were religious, I'd probably be thanking god for this opportunity. This man's story is awe inspiring. What he went through was beyond anything I've ever heard from any holocaust survivor. Every story from this period is unique, of course, and should be treasured, but Joe's will stay with me for the rest of my life.

As we carry on production, I'll be updating you all about what's going on. I hope you'll come along for the ride.

    • Insomnia part 2

      Alex_vanPutten

One of the advantages of not sleeping all through the night: Plenty of time in the morning to make delicious breakfasts.

I've got a job interview today at 11. Did I mention I was fired two weeks ago from my theater? Yeah, I was fired.
Anyway, I've got a job interview. I've been wearing a bathrobe and cookie monster pajama pants for 3 days straight. And now I have an interview. Life isn't as weird as I'd like it to be. In fact, it's pretty goddamn boring.

So most of the difference is in the User Interface?

Pretty much, and when it comes to modeling, you don't have to deal with a stack of modifiers.

    • bunig

I can't really say one works better over the other in any aspect. It really just comes down to how you like to work.

I'm not sure if you know this, but i started out with Max 9, but after trying out Maya 8.5 i just never went back. But i believe Shrew tried Maya and decided to stick with Max (you might have to confirme that with him).

Best advise i could give is took up tutorials for both and watch how people use them and pick one based on what you see. Or if you got some time, find a Digital-Tutors Modeling DVD for Maya and another for Max and run through both of them.

Yeah, i also have a few training videos to.

And i can use it without much of a problem, it mostly just takes a bit of trial and error before i get what i need.

Yeah, some of the materials are pretty self explanitory (composites, masks, RGB multiplies), and others not so much at all (falloffs, noises, combustions).

Do spend time fucking around with them, though, because they can be very, very useful.

Also, you must have a Live Messenger account cause you have an Xbox Live account, but do you ever use it?

    • Shrew

Um, in Max 2010 it's pretty simple.

Set up a Composite in the Diffuse, three slots. Put the diffuse in the first slot, with the mask being an inverted CC-Total. Put an RGB multiply of the diffuse and the primary color in the second slot, with them mask being CC-Primary. Then a second RGB multiply of the diffuse and the secondary color in the the last slot, with the mask set to CC-Secondary.

      Looks like this:

      MCcolorchangers.png

Note that you don't have to invert CC-Total in PS, you can use an Output material and just check the Invert checkbox.

Yeah, I know how you feel, man. It's a complete essential, really.

Yeah, you can defiantely try to get a legit student network license, but that can sometimes be a pain.

Also, it just occured to me that the .dll that I posted may have been altered because of my use of it. Did you try downloading the original that I linked to and using that one instead?

    • Shrew

Huh, that's weird. Worked perfectly for me...

It may be possible that they made some security changes from XP to Win7, I don't know.

You have the internet, though, I'm sure someone on some forum somewhere is bitching about the exact same problem.

Really don't know what else to tell you.

    • GMFRK_00

uh I think you have to open up paint and paste it in there...I'm not sure if there is another way to do it I do know some programs that might be able to do it more conveniently though forgot the name however

Benchmarking programs push your computer to its max and then tell you how well it has handled the tasks. For instance Crysis is often used for benchmarking. You set all of the settings to the very highest and turn on display frame rate. The average frame rate is like a grade for your machine.

Yeah, no worries. Just ask if you need it.

    • Shrew

Haven't tried it yet, though I meant to get around to it.

The binary architecture is the same between both OS's, and I'm positive that Max 2010 runs on XP and Vista, so there's no reason why it should run on the Win7 beta. Aside from the usual bugs associated with the OS being a beta version and so forth.

If you want, I can try and dig up one of the copies of XP lying around here somewhere and give you the Validation Key, assuming you have a disc with which to install it. I'm not entirely sure which disks around here have been used and which haven't, but I'll take a look if you want.
