I found this out to day after sanding some knife handles last night. Just frickin' wonderful. Thankfully I got the cortisone on it before I got too red and itchy. Blah. Oh well, could be worse.

I've got about 7 or 12871203487012342078401975235 books going right now, stashed at various points about the house just in case I get cornered by the wife/relative/opossum/ant eater and need to stick around for a bit.

Right now, next to me, is a copy of The Five Rings, written by Miyamoto Musashi (translated by Ashikaga Yoshiharu). Finished the Earth book last night, started on the Water book today. I'll likely have to read this one over and over and over to absorb the material. I'm in the market for a copy of Sun Tzu's Art of War.

On the dining room table are three books (omnibuses) of the Black Company by Glen Cook. I really enjoy this stuff. It's simple yet still has some twists and turns to it.

I've also got a bunch of stuff by R.A. Salvatore kicking around the house that I'm in the middle of reading.

Anywho, thats mostly what I've been up to since I was last here, that and getting the house ready for winter. Fun fun.

      I'll have more later. Adios.

The turkeys were back in the yard again today. This time one of the dopey bastards managed to get inside out fenced-in yard and couldn't figure out how to get back out again. So I had to go outside, open the fence, and chase the stupid thing back out. Once outside of the fence, the thing FLEW up into a tree, where it then began calling for his friends. *sigh* Stupid animals.

Before anyone gets after me to not killing it and eating it right there in the yard and wearing the feathers as a hat, we have a very limited turkey season here in Maine, I don't have a permit, and I'm 100% sure the neighbors down the road from us wouldn't approve of my shenanigans.

Got into a fight with the mother in law tonight. Not getting into details, but I don't think I'll be talking to her for a while. Wife is pissed off, too. Farkin' great. Just what we needed.

Anyway, it's late and I'm tired, so I'll give up some more details later.

My first "made by me" knife. The steel is 1095. Most of the shaping was done with files though I'm starting to get better with my 1x30 belt sander.

I had just finished sanding it to 220 grit.

      knife.jpg

      another angle

      knife2.jpg

Heated it to an orange color, held there for about 5 minutes, then quenched in water. Tempered at 400* for 2 hours.

      knife3.jpg

Quickly polished up, still needs some work.

      knife4.jpg

      knife5.jpg

I ended up needing to thin down the edge quite a bit, but so long as the quench went well it should be hard right through (10XX steels are shallow hardening steels. If thin enough, and quenched right, they can harden all the way through). I'll get some updated pics up soon.

    • This could prove to be interesting

My very first 'made by me' knife was hardened and tempered last night. Heating was done via a very hot hardwood fire, quenched in water, and tempered in the over for two hours at 400* in the kitchen stove. I know, not very accurate, but it's the best I can do on my budget, which is basically nothing. I'm pretty sure I got it hot enough and cooled it rapidly enough for it to get nice and hard. The file test passed, though I'm no expert and thus I'm only guessing. We'll find out when I put an edge on it and if it holds it or not. If not, then back to the drawing board.

In other news, I'm going to attempt to build a cheap-ass forge. Pretty much all I need is some black iron pipe and an old brake drum. Once I get that up and running I KNOW I'll be able to get steel up to a heat treatment temp (thats with simple steels, like W2 or the 10XX series. More complex steels will require soak times at precise temps for exact periods of time).

I'll get some picks up as soon as I get them resized.

and my fuckin' check engine light came on. Fucksticks. It's been off all friggin summer, and now it turns back on. Oh well, I needed to have a small portion of my exhaust done, so I'll have the guy read the code when I stop in.

In other news, we just got our KMS key for Windows 7 Pro, which I will be installing on my work laptop as soon as the boss gives me the go ahead. Likely that will be Monday. My feelings about 7 are somewhat positive, even though it's just Windows Vista SP2 that you have to pay for. No worries for me, however (thank you Microsoft Licensing Agreement, w00t).

The downside is that there are certain people that I work with at school who will want sEv3n only because its new and shiny. Despite the attraction, I know this will only cause me trouble in that these folks are running software apps that are old enough to smoke were they able to. Plus, as the only one in my dept crazy stupid willing to take the plunge, I will have to field their calls and I don't have the intestinal fortitude to deal with the folks. Note that I didn't say help, I said deal. As in they're a chore much akin to mowing the lawn or picking up the McDonalds bags the lazy fucks down the road keep tossing out in front of my house.

      *sigh*

In other news, the wife is working this weekend which sucks because the past two or three weekends we really have had any time off. We're either working our asses off around the house or one of us is literally at work. Kind of a bummer, but it also means I may have an opportunity to take my 6.5 sweed out of the range.

Thats about it for now. I've got a bunch of software that I need to install/update on the PC so thats what I'll be up to this evening. Adios folks

In Texas if you are on public/unclaimed land or water and catch a wild animal, it is yours to keep and do with it what you will. If you lose possession of said wild animal than you no longer possess it and it is considered wild again and anyone can catch it and it becomes their property, not yours even if you are running after it yelling that it's yours.

I'm just naturally optimistic. If anything, this will be an excellent ploy to fool the world into tolerating us more.

As a super-conservative. I know there is alot of shit that can go wrong with a super-liberal president having a democratic congress. I think he might not do much of anything for awhile in order to not look like liberal Bush to the people.

All I'm saying is that an eloquent speaker is excellent to have. Especially when the rest of the world seems to like the man.

No point in arguing with liberals anymore. Hes our president in January, that's it. Be glad they have term limits. Only thing is...I'm gonna be royally pissed if he turns the whole country into old D.C. and starts giving out citizenship.

But, hey....If he fucks up, we have talking rights because we didn't vote for the guy.

Well I'm not going to get this done right now. This is after I get a job and clear it with them so I can keep my job. I have too much to save up for and do right now. And my reasoning on this is it's a phase I'm going through and either one will close up if/when I get over this or decide I don't like it anymore [I decide I don't like things I've done to like my hair and the like all the time and frequently change my appearance...]. That's why I couldn't ever get a tattoo. But I hope that made sense because I'm kinda out of it right now... I was up late. And I was up early...

Getting rid of someone is also almost as hard as giving them clear, concise goals. Make sure they know what's expected of them. If they think it's OK to sit around & cruise internet porn all day, then they will likely do it.

    • tomii

Getting rid of someone is probably the hardest job a supervisor can do. Even ahrder than taking shit from higher up.

There's a lot of psychology behind it, and there's also a lot of CYA needed, these days.

You can help him out by documenting everything. Pull these rascalls aside & let them know they're fucking up. If it keeps up, bring them to a session where you write it down & have them initial or sign that they were there. Make it all official-like. That should put some fear in them. If it continues, do it again & again. Fater about three of these, you can go to your supe with the papers and say, "see, we have grounds"

But, you gotta make sure you're keeping the emotions out of it, too. Be as friendly towards the slugs as you can.

I don't have the numbers in front me right now. I'll look into it later when my dad gets home, so he can pull up the files for me (I don't know where they are). From what I remember though, with the current setup that my dad rigged together from the manuals, enough hydrogen should be produced to make up for the gasoline, if you tune it right. And my truck battery produces well over 12V.

I'm still gonna try it though.

    • haloguru2552

Apparently I have made a mistake in my explanation, and thus have led you to believe I am doing something completely different than what I actually am. We're not just dumping brown's gas into the carburetor, and expecting that to increase our gas mileage. You're right. That is a fool's errand.

We're tuning the carburetor to suck half from the gas tank, and half from the brown's gas jar (or substitute whatever mixture there, 70/30, 60/40, etc), so whereas it was sucking 100% from the gas tank before, it is now only sucking 50%. IE, half of the previous volume of gas is now being replaced by the combustible brown's gas. So there is still the same amount of combustible fuel being fed to the engine, except only half of it is gasoline, and the other half is a combustible fuel made from water.

Basically, it increases my gasoline mileage because I am burning less gasoline. My truck is still burning the same amount of overall fuel, I am just using less of the gasoline, thus I pay less to fuel the truck.

According to the information my dad has, brown's gas, which is actually a combustible fuel, can be produced from water with as little as 12 volts DC. The engine burns the brown's gas just as it would gasoline. The return line that feeds into the carburetor comes from the valve covers. The return line feeds unburned fumes back into the carburetor to be burned as fuel. We're feeding the brown's gas into that line, so in effect, I'm burning a mix of gasoline and brown's gas to thus increase my gas mileage.

By the way, I get 10 MPG in that truck. FTMFW.

    • haloguru2552

We're not using a kit. We're doing something different. If everything goes according to plan and all the numbers are correct, there should be enough brown's gas being created from the water to cut the fuel mixture 50/50. We're going to feed the brown's gas (hydrogen) into the return line on the carburetor. And then we tune it to suck half and half from the fuel tank and the hydrogen.

One of the reasons why people probably can't get it to work is because they're using it on modern cars with computer system. As soon as you cut the fuel mixture, the computer says, "Hey, I used to have more gas being fed. Dump more of that shit."

With a carbureted engine you don't have to deal with that bullshit.

We're still here. So far Ike's over Texas A&M and Huntsville [major prison in Texas and I'm pretty sure it's of the maximum security variety...] and is still classified as a hurricane. • maverickgtr

Well it was lower the three days ago, that's when it was $3.41. Like two days ago it jumped to $3.49 when we got word Ike was hitting the Texas coast and not Louisiana, Mississippi, or Florida.

    • maverickgtr

Yup I know. We need more refineries. But we can't have them. We need some further from the coast. Sure they'd have to ship the crude further but they'd have to ship the gas a smaller distance.

I've got about a week or so's gas left so I'm gonna wait for a while... hopefully that won't bite me in the ass. But I think I'll be alright considering our electric bill was way lower than we thought.

    • maverickgtr

Fuck that. We're close to the refineries so the shipping costs are so bad. But it gets bad when a fucking hurricane destroys our rigs in the gulf.

      The bastards.
