WASHINGTON (AP) - A massive foreclosure rescue bill overwhelmingly cleared a key Senate test Tuesday, drawing broad support from Democrats and Republicans alike. The Senate voted 83-9 to speed up work on the $300 billion mortgage aid plan, putting it on track for a final vote as early as the end of the day.

The resounding vote reflected a keen interest in both parties in claiming election-year credit for helping homeowners amid tough economic times.

Still, the measure faces a veto threat from President Bush and disputes among Democrats about key details. Those challenges will probably delay any final deal until mid-July.

Sen. Christopher J. Dodd, D-Conn., the Banking Committee chairman, said the legislation "would allow us to begin to put a tourniquet on the hemorrhaging of foreclosures in this country."

"What better gift on independence could we give the American people than a sense that this, their Congress of the United States, can come together, despite political differences, and craft legislation to make a difference for our country," Dodd said.

Senate passage would set the stage for high-stakes negotiations to resolve Democrats' differences. Conservative Democrats known as "Blue Dogs" are concerned about how to pay for the measure, while members of the Congressional Black Caucus - most of them liberal - call it "unacceptable," arguing it doesn't do enough to address the needs of African Americans.

Leaders also are divided on how high to place loan limits that apply to government mortgage insurance and financing.

The centerpiece of the package is a foreclosure rescue program in which the Federal Housing Administration would provide $300 billion in new, cheaper mortgages for distressed homeowners who otherwise would be considered too financially risky to qualify for government-insured, fixed-rate loans.

Borrowers would be eligible for the housing rescue if their mortgage holders were willing to take a substantial loss and allow them to refinance, and would ultimately have to share with the government a portion of any profits they made from selling or refinancing their properties.

The measure was advancing as a widely watched housing index said U.S. home prices fell in April at their steepest rate since the index began in 2000. The Standard & Poor's/Case-Shiller home price index of 20 cities fell by 15.3 percent in April versus a year ago, according to Tuesday's report.

A separate report from the Office of Federal Housing Enterprise Oversight said U.S. home prices fell 4.6 percent in April from the same month last year, when the index peaked. The government index is calculated using mortgage loans of $417,000 or less.

The bill would tighten controls and create a new regulator for Fannie Mae (FNM) and Freddie Mac (FRE), which provide huge amounts of cash flow to the mortgage market by buying home loans from banks.

It also would provide a $14.5 billion array of tax breaks, including a credit of up to $8,000 for first-time homebuyers who buy a home in the next year and boosts in low-income tax credits and mortgage revenue bonds.

In a letter to Democratic leaders last week, the 42 House members of the Black Caucus said the bill is plagued with "glaring omissions," including affordable housing funds for states affected by Hurricane Katrina and grants for states and localities to buy and fix up foreclosed properties.

To draw GOP support, Senate Democrats diverted the affordable housing money to pay for the foreclosure aid program.

The Senate bill provides $3.9 billion in grants to deal with foreclosed properties - compared with a House plan providing $15 billion - but the White House singled out the funds in its veto threat, and Blue Dogs are demanding that the money be offset with cuts elsewhere.

Rep. Barney Frank, D-Mass., the Financial Services Committee chairman, said he'd be willing to yank the money and add it to a separate measure in the interests of a deal.

There you have it. Congress is giving away out tax dollars to folks who bought homes they couldn't afford. Wow.

      Video here

In the interest of legislative process, whereby we hear many speeches on the floor, many members talk to their constituents; I'm going to try to bring a bit of enlightenment to this process with the use of a technological device as a ruler and chart. We're going to learn how to speak Democrat today.

Speaking local Democrat. Often we hear the word progressive, which translates into regressive, as used in a sentence, democrats are progressive. The translation, Democrats are regressive.

We hear the word change which means the 1970's. Democrats will bring you change. Translation, Democrats will bring you the 1970's.

Government means socialism. Democrats support proactive government. Translation, Democrats support proactive socialism.

Enhance revenues translates into raise taxes. Democrats will enhance revenues. Translation, Democrats will raise taxes.

This is my favorite part. The rich means you. For example, Democrats will only tax the rich. Translation, Democrats will only tax you. Ouch.

Invest translates into waste. Again used in a sentence. Democrats will invest your money. Translation, Democrats will waste your money.

Energy means lethargy. Democrats have an energy policy. Translation, Democrats have a lethargy policy.

Green collar jobs translates into unemployment. Democrats will replace your blue collar jobs with green collar jobs translates into Democrats will replace your blue collar jobs with unemployment.

Speaking global Democrat. Diplomacy equals magic. Democrats will protect America from Iranian nukes through tough principled diplomacy translates Democrats will protect America from Iranian through tough principled magic.

Engage means appease. Democrats will engage America’s enemies. Translates, Democrats will appease America’s enemies.

Importantly, end means lose. Democrats will end the Iraq war. Translation, Democrats will lose the Iraq war.

And finally, Contextually Construing Electoral Democrat, i.e., walking the party plank. This is a graduate level course.

As a progressive party, Democrats will bring you change to the production of green collar jobs and by using diplomacy to engage into diplomacy and end the Iraq war.

Translation, as a regressive party, the Democrats will bring you the 1970's by using socialism to raise taxes from you to waste in the production of lethargy and unemployment and by using magic to appease America’s enemies and lose the Iraq war.

I hope this exercise has been instructive. ...

...and somehow I managed to tweak a nerve in my back and now my lower back and left leg hurt. FUCKSTICKS!!! It's a beautiful day outside, and I was going to go fishing. Fuggit, I might go anyway, but I'm not sure. I've already taken 600mg of Ibuprofen, and I might take some more. The wife does have to work Saturday, so maybe I'll get to go fishing then.

Fourth of July is coming up fast, and the wife informed me that she has to work it. Great. No seeing the fireworks with her this year. Blah. At least she'll have Turkey Day off in November so that'll be nice.

I'm not sure if tonight is a chinese night or a pizza night, but I have plenty of time to figure that out. Hope you all have a good night.

    • Take Down the Bird Feeder

      Anastasius

      From www.mapartsinc.com/theRant.asp

I bought a bird feeder. I hung it on my back porch and filled it with seed. What a beauty of a bird feeder it is, as I filled it lovingly with seed. Within a week we had hundreds of birds taking advantage of the continuous flow of free and easily accessible food.

But then the birds started building nests in the boards on the patio, above the table, and next to the barbecue. Then came the bird shit. It was everywhere: on the patio tile, the chairs, the table ... everywhere!

Then some of the birds turned mean. They would dive bomb me and try to peck me even though I had fed them out of my own pocket.

And others birds were boisterous and loud. They sat on the feeder and squawked and screamed at all hours of the day and night and demanded that I fill it when it got low on food.

After a while, I couldn't even sit on my own back porch anymore. So I took down the bird feeder and in three days the birds were gone. I cleaned up their mess and took down the many nests they had built all over the patio.

Soon, the back yard was like it used to be ... quiet, serene and no one demanding their rights to a free meal. Now let's see .... Our government gives out free food, subsidized housing, free medical care, and free education and allows anyone born here to be an automatic citizen.

Then the illegals came by the tens of thousands. Suddenly our taxes went up to pay for free services; small apartments are housing 5 families; you have to wait 6 hours to be seen by an emergency room doctor; your child's 2nd grade class is behind other schools, because over half the class doesn't speak English.

Corn Flakes now come in a bilingual box; I have to "press one" to hear my bank talk to me in English, and people waving flags other than "Old Glory" are squawking and screaming in the streets, demanding more rights and free liberties.

Just my opinion, but maybe it's time for the government to take down the bird feeder. If you agree, spread the word; if not, Continue cleaning up the shit!
    • So congress passed a $300 billion bill

      Anastasius

It's being referred to as "The Farm Bill". What does this bill do?

Two-thirds of the $300 billion in spending for the farm bill will go for nutrition programs such as food stamps. Another $40 billion will go toward farm subsidies, and $30 billion is allocated for payments to farms to keep land idle and other environmental programs.

Yay, giving out more food stamps. Fucking bastards. Farm subsidies (probably for corn destined to become Ethanol)...assholes...and whats this bullshit about keeping land 'idle'? Why aren't they growing something? WTF good does 'idle land' do for a farm? Whats the matter, don't want them to produce enough so your investments pay off? Cock gobblers.

I fuckin' hate politicians, even the ones I like I fuckin' hate 'em.

So we've been running around fixing main boards in a lot of our systems. The desktops have been dropping like flies lately. The network adapters will just stop working at gigabit speeds. They won't autodetect down to the next working speed, you have to manually set them to 10 or 100 megabit. Even then, eventually they will fail out and start spamming the network with junk traffic.

Of the 55 system we purchased last year, we've replaced 20 system boards so far for this problem. We haven't had any repeats yet, but it's only a matter of time.

So today I got to cobble together all of our data about the RMAs we've done because the company we purchased them from doesn't seem all that interested in reimbursing us for the work that we've done (we have a service contract through them to do the work ourselves and get paid for each job). Needless to say, we're a little pissed off about it.

Anywho, the wife bought stuff to do hamburgers, so I'm gonna head home. You all have a good night.

    • another reason obama sucks

      Anastasius

So yesterday while I was watching the stock market do the yo-yo dance of doom, I saw and read an article
regarding Obama's plan for our retirement. His plan is to force companies that don't offer retirement
packages to require the company to auto-enroll the employee into an IRA type account. Companies
with retirement plans would have to auto-enroll their employees into those. According to the article,
the companies would then redirect 3% of their pay into said accounts, and the government would
match part of the money that was contributed. The employees could opt out, but they would have to
remember to do the paperwork to do so.

The presumptive Democratic presidential nominee proposes that companies that don't offer retirement
plans be required to set up and automatically enroll employees in IRA-type accounts. In addition,
companies with plans would have to automatically enroll workers in them.

Employees, unless they opt out, would have 3% of their salary directly deposited into the retirement
account, typically into a low-cost index mutual fund. And the government would match part of the money
      certain employees contribute.
To encourage low- and moderate-income people to stay in the plan, Obama would provide a
federally-funded match for families earning less than $75,000 who set aside money in a retirement
account at work or on their own. The government match - 50% of up to $1,000 in savings - would be
a refundable tax credit directly deposited into an IRA.

Personally I don't think the guy has the right to say "Oh, well, we're taking this money away from you
and putting it in an IRA for your own good." Listen ass clown, it's my money, I earned it, and I can
do what I want with it. Personally I already have a retirement plan, and I think it's a good idea, but
forcing people to enroll in it isn't kosher. Some people need every penny they earn and they just can't
      afford to save.

In addition to the right to do it, I don't think that the government can afford the matching payments. We've
currently got quite a few of our troops and other military assets deployed in the ME, which costs a fair
bit of money, plus we're in debt up to our eyeballs anyway. A sweet irony would be for him to raise
the income tax to support the burden.

So here it comes, the socialist "We know whats good for you, now drink your Kool Aid" governement.

the Ishapore No1 Mk3 rifles in 7.62x51 were actually made for that caliber from the start and designated as a 2A or 2A1. A number of SMLE's though have been converted to .308 caliber by various (usually unknowing) people, and these rifles are dangerous to shoot, as the action design and metalurgy cannot handle the pressures developed by the 7.62x51 (or .308) cartridge, and after many firings these weapons become weakoned to the point where there is a failure, aka. the action blows up in your face. The most sure way to tell whether it is a .303 caliber SMLE converted to .308 or whether its a Ishapore 2A or 2A1 is to look at what is stamped on the butt socket. 2A and 2A1 rifles should be stamped with something like R.F.I. 7.62mm Rifle 2A1 (or 2A if thats the model you have) followed by the year of manufacture. Also the 2A and 2A1 rifles were designed for the 7.62x51 round from the start and they are also of much stronger and more modern (for the time) steel.

Thought you'd be interested to know that, and you should check out whether you've got a 2A / 2A1 rifle or you really do have a converted rifle. Either way you should also get it checked out by a good gunsmith who is familiar with those rifles to make sure is is safe, as well as after every few hundred rounds. Just to be safe : P
