Not that I'm going to complain about today. Its Saturday (or at least it was), I didn't have to work, I got to sleep in, and I accomplished a few things that needed doing. Let me rephrase that. I accomplished some things that needed doing about a week ago because I'm a lazy bastard who plays too much Halo 2 on the PC.

      Now then...on to business...or something.

I've been asked if I'm here to stay. The answer is, as of now, yes. In my time away I've realized that I no longer had the outlet that I'm used to when I need to rant or ask difficult questions (like if a tree falls on a mime and nobody is around to hear it, does he make a noise?). Arfcom is slowly but surely being taken over by retards who pretend to be space shuttle door gunner seal marines, and ranting on Facebook is just plain stupid (especially when talking about the wife...who happens to be on my friends list). So I'm back to bore you with tidbits from my life and ask you all strange questions.

Now, a little more in depth about what I've been up to.

I mentioned buying a house. The wife and I completed this little deed back at the end of June. That was by far the most annoying thing I've ever done. I swear, at points during this process I was ready to either give up and live in an apartment forever, or start beating people to death with a steel dildo while wearing a bugs bunny suit.

Sorry, got a little off track. Anyway, the house is about 20 years old with an attached garage that is about 10 years old. Laminate floors downstairs, carpet upstairs. Tongue and groove pine on much of the walls and ceiling. Huge room over the garage (we use it as the living room). The only thing I wish we had in the house is a bathroom in the master bedroom. Not enough space to put one in, either.

The yard is fairly large and fenced in, great for dogs and children (keeps 'em in the yard and away from the road). I've also got enough room to start a garden, which I plan to try next year. We've also got two really huge pines that are close enough that I could string up a hammock between them (the wife said that this will be happening next year as well). It also has a nice large deck that the wife and I have been slowly but surely painting. No man cave as of yet, need to get a radon mitigation system set up in the basement before I can claim some space (other than the workbench in the garage).

My 'knives' (aka knife shaped chunks of steel) are slowly but surely progressing. I'm actually ready to attempt to harden and then temper one of them. To do so I either need to build a propane gas forge or pick up some lump charcoal (not briquettes) and something to put them in. Either way, this project involves me and fire, which should result in good times...and fire trucks. Probably ambulance services, too.

My firearm collection has not expanded at all. I'm a little bummed by this, but it's alright. I've had too much to do as of late to do any shooting. In fact, I have been to the range since the wife and I got the house. I do have half of an AR-15 sitting in the corner (needs a full upper, lower is complete), but I'd have to find some way for the wife to give me the $550 I need to get the upper I want, and I don't think that will happen unless the upper is delivered to the house by Brian Adams.

Work is the same as always. Likely it will never change.

On that note, it's late and my eyes are starting to feel funny. I'll talk to yall later.

    • The more things change...

So as I was puttering about the house, trying to figure out what to do next, and I figured I'd hop on the computer and see what is going on in the world. Then I remembered how boring the world really is. Despite all of the goings on that I read about, much of it is the same as it always is. So I asked myself "where haven't I been in a long, long time?" The answer, obviously, is here. So here I am.

Life here is as it always is. Being an IT guy means my days are filled fixing computers that are so loused up with spyware/malware/viri that they should have oozing sores and a cough that doesn't go away. Being a home owner (the only real interesting development) means I get to experience new and exciting problems, like fixing a leaky faucet or evicting squirrels from a crawl space. At the moment I have a 30' pine tree laying in the yard that I've been slowly dismantling. I'm also learning the hard way how to grow grass. By hard way I mean that the wild turkeys keep eating the seed that I put down. Finally, being me has gotten me both into and out of trouble, so life is much the way it was before I left.

So while I'd like to say that things are new and exciting, they really aren't. Life has moved forward with me, giving me new responsibilities and worries, much like it does to everyone (though not everyone takes these worries and responsibilities seriously), and the daily grind continues on.

On that note, I'm off to the store. I need to get some stuff to make some chili (and there are no beans in my chili). Talk to you all later.

    • I'm still here...

Just been busy lately. Got my belt sander last night. With any luck I'll be putting it to good use in the next couple of days. I'm gonna buy some steel to work with and try to actually make some knives. Thankfully 1095 is still somewhat cheap ($7 for a 1/8 x 1 1/2 x 18 bar) compared to D2 ($30 for the same size) or 154CM ($24 for the same size). After I screw up enough times I'll move on to some of the 'better' steel types. Heat treating I can do here at the school (we have a kiln). 440C is looking awfully tempting as I can heat treat at work but temper at home in the oven (375 draw will give me about RC 57-58 which is supposed to be a good place for 440C).

Anywho, I'll catch up on all of your journals as soon as I'm able to. Talk to yall later.

    • Haven't been on much lately

      Anastasius

Mostly due to the site changes. It's not that I don't like 'em, I do, it's pretty neat, but the speed is terrible. I have a 3 down/ 1 up connection, and it takes FOR FUCKIN' EVER to load this place. Gah!

Ok, now that I'm past that, on to more things that make me want to strangle people in their sleep.

So today I got to work with some special people. By special I mean mentally challenged, and by that I mean students.

Had one kid bring in his laptop. Said "I need the school software installed." I parsed this as meaning he needs AVG, the clean access client, and Office 2007. So I started working on it and the kid disappears. I was hoping that the little bastard was just going to the bathroom, but nope, he left. No name, no password with the machine, and no battery charger. I left the computer right where it was, and on so the battery would die.

The next lobotomy patient who walked in wanted me to put office on a laptop. I had seen the guy just last week to do the same thing to a different laptop, and we're allowed one install for each idiot waste of space student, I started asking questions.

"Another laptop, eh? You're only allowed one install of Office."
"Oh, no, that old laptop died. This is my new one."
"Uh huh, get it this weekend?"
      "Yeah, from Best Buy."

The machine didn't look too old, but unless he piled some sand paper and cinder blocks on top of it, there was no way a 'new' PC could look like this. So I power it up. It's running vista, and I see my first and really only needed clue at the login prompt.

      "Mind loggin' in Rachel?"
      "What?"
"Rachel. Thats the user name thats up here."
      "Umm..."

I shut the laptop down and hand it back to the guy, explaining that, in no uncertain terms, should he try that again I was going to report it to his company commander. He left in a hurry.

While I was contemplating running a low voltage circuit though the door knob to the tech room, another student comes in.

"Hey, I need to connect to the printer in the graphics lab."
"Sorry, no can do. Thats for lab use only."
"Oh come on, I need to print out some pics of my truck so..."

I stopped listening at that point and pretty much told him to GTFO. Want color pics of your truck? Got to Rite Aid or Wallgreens or whatever.

Had another paragon of intelligence come in who was shutdown (network wise) for viral spam traffic...again...for the third time. THIRD FUCKING TIME!!. I told the kid this is the last time we fix it, so he'd best stop doing whatever it was that he was doing.

Been dealing with a parent who is trying to get her son's Dell fixed, and I some how ended up in the middle of it. The fucking tech showed up two weeks ago, on a Friday, and 4:45 no less, and said it would take him an hour to fix the machine. I told him that I was shutting down the shop at 5, no later. He says "oh, ok. Just lock the doors, I'll shut everything up for ya."

Hold on there scooter. I didn't say "I'm leaving at five and you can stay." I said the shop was closing, as in you're ass is out the fucking door, at 5. It didn't quite sink in, so explained it to him, mostly by saying "I don't think so. We leave, all of us, even you, at five."

"But I won't have the work done."
      "Hey, thats not my problem."

So we leave at five. He leaves the rest of the parts, I take care of it. Machine still won't work. Great. Call mommy dearest, she calls Dell, Dell tech shows back up. After five. On the following friday. Numb bastard. Security let him in, he did his thing and left. I'm missing a set of screw drivers. Coincidence?

So yeah, work is an entertaining thing. Either that or its gonna make my hair fall out, take you're pick.

Oh yeah, we're not getting out extra tech now. State decided to take back 10% of their yearly contribution to the school. Isn't that nice of em? Fucktards probably can't count past ten with their shoes on, let alone balance a budget.

Anywho, I'm out. Got stuff to do. Have a good one folks.

    • Good times and stuff...

      Anastasius

Sorry I haven't been around much, work has been keeping me rather busy and to be honest, most of what I would have told you would have been negative, so I figured I'd spare you most of it. Some of it was funny-negative, some educational-negative, but for the most part it was "I'm gonna fucking kill you"-negative.

So I have another knife almost done. Tomorrow I will be doing the finishing touches and I'll post pics when it's done. I have three more blades to start working on as well. A couple of small knives and what I believe was called an Appalachian Bowie knife. Good times. To go with 'em I have some bird's eye maple, some rose wood, some Iron wood, and some buffalo horn. Should be fun.

Work has been right out fucking straight. Holy crap. If it ever slows down I won't know what to do with myself. If I'm not rebuilding some numb ass students machine I'm fixing one of our broke ass Gateway's or I'm listening to someone complain about how we don't have some software that was purchased before I was hired (and in some cases before I was out of the third fucking grade). I'm still waiting for the school to hire a new tech. The job was posted and will be run until the end of this month. Yippy. Whoo. Meh. We'll either end up hiring someone who thinks I'm his/her subordinate (yeah fuckin' right) or we'll hire someone who doesn't know his/her ass from a com port. Course, once that person is hired I get to do some of the stuff that I'm supposed to be doing, some server side maintenance, which will be nice. I'll have to be sure to put the new person in their place. Wonder how much voltage I can run through their chair...

Home life is the same as it always is. Wife was complaining about there not being any dishes for her to use. I said "Why don't you wash some?". I guess I should have said "Yes master, I'll wash you a dish master." Good times all around. After I finished the dishes I went to the dump, took back the returnables, cleaned up some spots on the rug (yay tomato sauce), vacuumed, and did some laundry. In between I also played some wow and worked on the knife mentioned above. I'm a susie fuckin' home maker. Wheres my apron bitches???

Much of that was sarcasm, in case you think I've totally flipped my lid.

I had a three day weekend this weekend, but I didn't get to the range. Why? Well, bathroom tile + water + me = sore. Yep, I went ass over tea kettle in the bathroom. Thankfully the wife wasn't there to laugh at me. 1000 mg of advil isn't dulling the pain either. Meh. If this is the worst thing that happens to me I'll be doing well.

The wife was having to work three nights this weekend, so I've been trying to keep her sane. It's working out so far, and thankfully she has tomorrow off. Course, then she'll turn right around and go back to her normal schedule Wednesday. She gets paid well, but she hates this shift. Come November she'll be going to work an hour earlier and comeing home earlier. Awesome!

Birthday is coming up in about two weeks. Everyone keeps asking me what I want. I keep wondering why they laugh when I say the ability to make heads explode. It's not nice to laugh at someones dreams, especially when they involve exploding heads. In reality I want to go visit my dad, go shooting, play with Chuck (the chocolate lab), drink beer, eat steak, and sleep. Thats it. Simple, yet relaxing to me. I'll probably end up being dragged all over fucking creation doing god only knows what because my wife and her family think it's 'fun'. To me, shooting the shit with friends is fun. Listening to my wife's family argue over where to eat isn't fun.

Anywho, I'm gonna jet. Need to catch up on some journal entries some some of you fine folks and get some sleep. The school had an extra day to fuck things up while I wasn't there so I think I'm gonna need it. Adios.

    • Meh, raining

      Anastasius

Hurricane Kyle is swinging by to visit this weekend. He'll be visiting Nova Scotia while drenching must of eastern Maine at the same time. I wasn't worried in the slightest. We've got batteries, water, and plenty of food.

My mother in law, on the other hand, is panic struck.

She seems to think that the Penobscot is going to flood, washing away anything south of Bangor. Yeah, right. She also said that we're going to lose power for a day or more. I'm sure that CMP will allow the Verso Paper Mill to be out of power for more than a day. Money talks and they have quite a bit. Being on the same loop as them has it's advantages. She kept saying that we should evacuate. LOL!! I've never met someone so panic struck in my life. Then she was going on about how I might not be able to get to work on Monday because the road that leads to Castine may be washed away. I kinda doubt that. This summer the state replaced just about all of the major culverts along the way, so I should be fine on Monday. Besides, what do I care (I'm salary, I get paid if I'm there or not)? I'll just go home. Not an emergency.

Anywho, I'm gonna watch it rain, then watch the wind blow, all the while I'll be playing SPORE. Talk to yall later.

Frankly I think it turned out pretty good. Micarta is some hard stuff to work with, but it's toughness is a virtue. Pins are stainless steel (360 stainless I believe, but I can't remember). Blade is 440c if memory serves. When properly quenched, 440c can make a decently sharp blade though it's edge retention leaves something to be desired. On the upside it doesn't stain easily at all, so you don't have to worry about rust as much as with other steel types.

      knife.jpg

      Before shaping and polishing

      knife2.jpg

      Starting to shape the handle

      knife3.jpg

I should have used my dremel, but I'm not very steady with it, thus I used what files I had kicking about. It worked, but it took a damn long time. I can't wait until I get my belt sander.

      knife4.jpg

Shaped, sanded, and polished (to a degree). Buffed it with a white buffing compound (this I'm not afraid of using my dremel for).

      knife5.jpg

The finished product. Looks pretty good to me.

      knife6.jpg

Both of them together. Now I need to make a sheath for the new one.

      knife7.jpg

Now I can move onto the big skinner that I have, then I can make a new order for some more blades, handle material, and other stuffs. I'm contemplating a hidden tang blade, but I'm not too sure yet. Anywho, please let me know what you think. Talk to yall later.

The micarta has been epoxied on, pins inserted, and now it's curing. I'll start shaping it tomorrow. The epoxy will set in about an hour, but I set it sit for at least 12 if not 24 hours before doing anything to it.

Didn't end up doing anything today. Might still go out for dinner, but that depends on what gas prices are doing. If they're still skyrocketing (fuck you again Ike, fuck you and everyone that looks like you too), I'll opt for walking down to one of the local places (expensive, not all that impressive (Irish place with Guinness from a bottle? Blech!!)). Either that we'll do subway (cheap, tasty, made to order).

Anywho, the epoxy smell is giving me a headache, so I'm gonna head outside. Talk to yall later.

I normally try to. They're in the bookcase across from the end of my bed back there. I don't really take my laptop anywhere for service because the warranty is up, I don't have enough money to take it anywhere, and one of my friends is like a district manager of something for HP and he actually knows his stuff unlike most dipshits that work for a department other than tech support, so if I have any questions I ask him first. This is the second time this has happened and it's just one of the updates but SP1 installs all of the updates you haven't installed and you can't tell it not to.

I hope so. I can't afford to keep driving to and from class for much longer. And if I can't afford it, I'm gonna have to drop out... : |

It's supposed to find the diameter, circumference, and area of a circle with the radius that the user inputs. When I just build the file it says it's fine. But when I run it, it finds the diameter but it displays a very wrong message when it attempts to run the circumference formula.. Like it's looking for something it can't find, but can't... I've checked my syntax and the formula and tried using the variables float and double to no avail.

      Nope. Already gone.

XP on my comp could take a snapshot of the base directories and show it to me, but access to them was completely corrupted. When I tried to install over the top (after reinstalling the HDD in the original comp), the system locked completely. Wouldn't even recognize an HDD was present.

If it had just been the file system, I could have reinstalled over top of it. Without a working partition, there was no way to make Setup recognize a legitimate drive was installed. Had to download a third-party format utility in order to wipe the drive.

I used to live on campus. It's bullshit. But they closed it for a special event. There are other lots that fewer people use that could've been used just the same. UTA's a cool school and all, but they don't really consider their students first. I understand that they needed the lot for an event, but they should've thought about the parking situation since they've already closed two other lots for pretty much a useless building.

Though I did get one of my programs written all by myself and that makes me kinda proud of myself. Though there's only one criteria with the program that I haven't met yet, but it's a small thing...

No we have to take Mana 23xx and Mana 33xx. I already took the first one and the prof straight up told us you can't learn to be a good manager from a book, you have to do it. And my prof for this course pretty much said the same thing. But the think is, at UTA they won't release your grade for a Management class unless you participate in one of the graduate student's or professor's research project. And most of your grade is dependent on one team project. So pretty much the course is all about being a lab rat for a research project for the grad students or the profs and about one team project.

ooooh, I can't fucking wait. The suspense is killing me. I can take it for a test drive after that. The brakes need to be replaced, but they'll be ok for a couple miles up the street. I'll be sure to take a video if it all gets done tomorrow.

Well I bought this one, and this one and then some pinning hardware from the same guy. He was very nice and bundled it all together, combined the shipping and its on the way.

I'm sure there are much higher quality blades out there but I wanted something to start with. I would like to do some carbon blades and Damascus ones too.

To be honest, I couldn't say right off the bat. I'm not real current on what's going on. My parents have done most the research, and then they relay to me whatever they find.

I trust their word, but I'm not really ready to debate the matter simply because I haven't done a lot of research. And really, I shouldn't have said anything in the first place, because of that. My bad. smiley4.gif

Yea Java is one of the languages I've looked into learning before, because it's so handy nowadays. Just about every website I'm on has some sort of Java applet.

Indeed. Me and all my friends look up our profs on pick-a-prof before we even sign up for a class because they've all been screwed over in a class just because the teacher is a dick.

the course is about Java programming apparently. We're using JCreator and Netbeans and i'm thinking about downloading textpad to help with when I'm writing the program since Java is picky about syntax and capitalization and all that. We just wrote a little applet that when put in the command screen brought up the words "Welcome to Java!" She walked us through it and said it was ok if we didn't completely understand everything today so long as we got familiar with the syntax and rules and all that and that we were going to go over it in more detail later so we could actually understand. She seems really good.

Winchester factory range ammo, of course. That's all I use on the range.

I definitely see your point there, and I'm with you that Mcain is a better choice, but...still, I don't like either of them.

They're both up to no good.

Took the .45 out for a spin today.

Recoil spring is worn and the extractor needs some work because it's keeping the rounds from chambering properly, but it kicks less than a 9mm and the trigger pull is frightening to even think about.

Suffice to say that it goes off exactly when you want it to and not a moment before (or after).

Same way with my Crown Vic. Except I just go and borrow the OBDII code scanner from O'Riellys, and the scanner gets the engine code, and tells me what's wrong with the engine. smiley8.gif

Gotta love computer systems. Although, my car is the second most reliable car on the market, so I rarely have to do anything to it. smiley6.gif

Lol I love NyQuil when I'm sick. Normally if I get sick, I can't sleep and it just makes me pass out. Not even pass out, I just pass the fuck out.

I forgot to say it in my journal comment, feel better!
