So my brother suggested I journal about my time working for a Fox affiliate in Chico, CA. It was an interesting time, Fox from 2001 - 2003. I saw beauty, and tragedy. This one is about beauty. Such beauty.

    • Thing I've Learned About Personal Sites...

      Anomalous

...it's very hard to get people to check out your personal website.

I mean, you can spend money setting up the site, claiming the domain, spend time designing it, personalizing it, adding all kinds of different content to draw people in, and in the end, you have hits in the single digits. And a lot of time spent giving original content away for free with little to show for it.

Like Platform Harmony. Maybe I didn't draw the characters myself, but I wrote it. I took the pictures. I put it together. All for free. And now, months later, I look at the results of all my work and see few people taking much of an interest in it and I say this: time well spent!

I mean, people leaving me alone: this is awesome! I don't have people hating on me needlessly. I haven't pissed people off for no apparent reason! I mean, I get to go about my day as if there were nothing special about me at all! This is perfect!

So I'm making another one! Yeah, Episode Two of my comic based (extremely loosely) on my time working on an oil rig is in the works right now. And nobody gives a crap. For an introvert who likes being able to go to the grocery store in peace, I'm living the dream.

"Flinging her body across the carpet, she struck the rock of the fireplace and spun in the air, landing on all fours. She was looking around the living room with quick jerks, then found Harold. He was staring at her, the color draining from his face."

      Cocoa Tales: Episode Six

If you aren't caught up (or even if you haven't even started...no hard feelings) check out the Table of Contents to join in the madness.

The first episode of Cocoa Tales is live! For those of you, if any remain, who remember the first iteration of Cocoa Tales, some of the story may be familiar, but rest assured there's plenty of new material to make it worth rereading.

And everything after the first season will be completely new.

    • The Deep End

      Anomalous

So I finished a new novel the other day (the first draft of a new novel; still got hours and hours of revision ahead of me) and this one's unique. I'll admit, I took a knee with the last three, swimming in the kiddy pool of comedy. I wrote three light-hearted, easy to digest books because if they were rejected or hated, I could dismiss the rejection. They were meaningless. Who would hate on meaningless books?

But this one? I poured everything I had into it. Swinging for the fences with this one. It's called The Stripping Game. It's character-driven instead of plot, has realistic characters instead of comic, and with every turn I tried to be deep. I've specifically tried to avoid changing the world with my writing. Until now.

And it scares the piss out of me. Seriously. Tommy Wiseau sank everything he had and then some into a little movie called The Room. And we laugh at it. We mock it.

Not that I think we shouldn't. It's deserving of all the derision it receives. But I can't help but feel some respect for Wiseau. I mean, he did it. He poured everything he had into a movie that he clearly thought very highly of. I wouldn't be surprised if he had a whole novel's worth of material in the back of his mind when he worked on it. And we laugh at it.

Yeah, I'm worried I might be the next Wiseau with The Stripping Game, and I may get through the revision process and decide it's just not worth publishing. I mean, I've already had to do that with Cocoa Tales.

Yup. I've called it. I love Cocoa Tales. I adore Cocoa Tales. But it's just not that good.

Not that the story's going to disappear into the mists. In fact, I'll be re-releasing it on my blog starting next year (earmarked January-ish, depending on how long it takes for me to revise the first few episodes). If it catches waves in that form, I'll consider releasing a novel edition for each season, but it's not going to start out as a novel. It began its life in episodes, and that's the way it should remain.

And The Stripping Game? Sweet merciful fog, I may just be dumb enough to release it. I mean, gotta learn to swim someday. Been in the water since I was a child.

Some of you may recall I worked on an off-shore oil rig. Some of you may think I still do. Well I don't. I work in pest control now. Reluctantly. Someday I may write about my life in pest control, but not today. Today, I'm writing about my life on an oil rig. What was it like? The exact opposite of this:

Closing in on ten years since I signed up for this fine site. Ten years. Yowza. Ten years, and I haven't even changed my avatar. Deleted a few journal entries (which I regret, bee tee dubs) and more than a few pictures because I remember a time when you could only have nine pictures.

      Or was it six?

I also remember when all the pictures on the site were mysteriously deleted. March 11, 2005. Eight years ago. Sweet crackers, this site is in the fourth grade.

I don't remember the fourth grade, but I remember signing up for this site. I was twenty-four, barely shaving, skinny, and just out of college. I was twenty-four and just hitting the world.

      I'm not anymore.

But at least I can grow a beard.

So twice in the last couple months I've spoken with old friends from the internet and both of them had no idea I've published, not only one new book, but three.

And I've republished an older book.

      And released a CD.

      Yeah. I've been busy.

A little too busy to advertise, it would seem, so here it is, the post to end all posts: I have released a trilogy of books about a private investigator who doesn't sleep until he closes his case, a collection of short stories and an album! Yay!

My books can be found here and my music can be found here.

I have a music section on my website as well, which costs me a fortune each year so please: boost my hits. Make it seem worthwhile, even if it's just on the surface.

      Ooh..I should buy a Surface 2 tomorrow!

Check me out! All my little music writing for the last eight years has actually produced something decent.
This New Wilderness is available at Amazon in both CD and MP3 formats. I suggest buying both. Multiple times. I really want to quit my job.

Ah but seriously, check out the samples below from the album and if you like what you hear, pick up the album, and be prepared for some serious disappointment when you realize every other song on the album sucks. Because that's how I roll. Shattering disillusionment.

      Currents
Track Two from This New Wilderness

      Crystals
Track Five from This New Wilderness

      Shadows
Track Seven from This New Wilderness

Now to get back to work on Hamton Pigs. It has to be ready for a November release, after all, when I start working on my next book: Air Quote Pest Control. I already can't wait to write it.

Night time flights aren't permitted in the Gulf. All ships must be on the ground or on the platform at which they'll spend the night not later than 30 min prior to official sunset.

I'm surprised you can fly at night. I've spent many a night offshore. Some platforms are really nice and comfy, but some really suck the big you know what.

Most are noisy, rusty, filthy places to be. Some I've been on were like nice hotels almost. Most of the ones I've had to stay at were of the filthy pit kind.

They did and still do fly them to death in the Gulf. It's a rat-race of epic proportions. I only did it for a year and got out. HATED it. I' now an instructor pilot at the U.S. Army flight school at Ft. Rucker, AL.

Punctuation can be a cruel mistress. I believe there's a humour book out there called East Shoots and Leaves.

I was disappointed you took down the stories because I do read them, and enjoy them. I just find it very hard to write anything intelligent about a story I read on a computer screen instead of an actual book. My education taught me everything online is pointless and fleeting, I'm afraid.

Don't bother with HIMYM. There's nothing but disappointment down that road; trust me.

Castle, however--get on that shit as soon as you possibly can. It's on Hulu, but they're only in the second season. It's definitely worth starting from the start (especially since "Flowers For Your Grave" is the best episode out of any show ever).
