I'm just going to keep telling people I'm 19 until they stop believing me.

This is actin. Its kind of like a rope/cable of protein that your cells use to do lots of cool stuff, like move.

      C4b_actinFilaments.GIF

This is Listeria monocytogenes. It is a bacteria that can make you very sick, especially if you're a pregnant women. What a dick.

      2287.jpg

What do the two have to do with each other? L. monocytogenes can invade your cells and hijack their ability to make actin, growing filaments on its posterior end. Why does it do this?

To zoom around the cell like a goddam rocket

      Nature is awesome.
      Carry on.

Know that scene in the Matrix, when Neo realizes hes the one and starts to see everything code?

I'm starting to feel that way with NMR printouts. Signals everywhere. Gotta love midterm season.

(An NMR is an MRI for molecules. This is what a printout looks like.)

      901-nmr.gif

Edit: Apparently that image isn't working? Its showing up for me, but in case its not and you're interested, just google NMR. Its just a graph with a bunch of peaks.

Those of you who are or have been university/college students; after a professor gave their last lecture, did your class applaud them? It happens in every course at McGill, even if the prof only gave 1 or 2 lectures. I never really thought anything of it until a few days ago, when a guy in my anatomy class mentioned that this is the only school hes been to that does it. He thought it might be a Canadian thing.

I asked a friend back home, and he said they only applaud if they liked the prof.

I got my ipod slightly wet today (played quidditch with it in my pocket and fell in a wet patch). Now its just showing a blank white screen.

Google seems to say my best bet is just to set it somewhere warm (I put it on top of the fridge) and let it dry. Have any of you had this problem before, and can give me any additional advice?

UPDATE: It seems to be working again. It didn't get very wet I guess.

...but I am pretty busy. I have been creeping around here, keeping up on your guys journals, though.

Heres what has been keeping me so busy:

-Classes. This semester I'm taking 4 lectures (Molecular Biology, Organic Chemistry 1, Physical Chemistry, and Intro to Microbiology), and 3 labs (Org chem lab, Microbiology lab, and Phys Chem lab aka why oh god why didn't I take a stats course before this lab)

-Quidditch. Ya, I'm still doing that. I'm actually VP internal this year, because I didn't think it was quite dorky enough to just play on the team.

-Tutoring: Starting in a week or two, I'll be tutoring one or two students in Physics 101, and maybe running a tutorial for ~10 students in General Chemistry 1. Its a volunteer position through the Science Undergrad Society.

Hope you all are keeping as busy as I am.

EDIT: Oh, and I got a scholarship, apparently. Go me.

I've been pretty good. Got me a new job as a seasonal temp for the parks maintenance department of one of the cities here in Oregon. Basically, I just work 6 months outta the year and I make a helluva lot more than I did working all year round as a dishwashwer, lol.

In that, I was able to finally move out on my own and start a whole new chapter, so that's pretty cool.

Third year, yeah? That's awesome. How much longer do you have left? What are you going to school for anyway?

      It's really random. I'm working for a start-up photo bio reactor company/geology exploration/etc. etc.

Last week I shoveled gravel, mapped pipelines, and researched a bunch. It's a good mix.

    • Dunharrow

My academic advisor strongly suggested that schools dislike it when students take the 'Pass/Fail' option. You should not do it more than once (you are only permitted to do it twice anyway). If you are considering Med School, then you should really try to avoid that option.

I have taken three philosophy courses. I suggest you stay away from Biomedical Ethics and from Introduction to Moral Philosophy. While they are interesting, the courses are difficult and it is very hard to get any kind of help. These are courses where the teacher only lectures, and you are stuck dealing with T.A.s.... The TAs mark your papers, and I feel like they are always under the impression that they have to mark hard.

I really enjoyed Early Medieval Philosophy with Calvin Normore. He is the tops in that field, and knows how to put together an interesting course. And, me marks pretty easily. However, if you have no base in Plato or Aristotle, you will find the course a little difficult.

I have not taken any French courses at McGill, and MATH 201 will be the first Math course I complete.

I would really recommend the Art of Listening (it's under the Arts faculty, in the MUAR department). It is probably the easiest course at McGill, supposing you like music. Otherwise, try to take courses with smaller course loads as electives. Don't get stuck writing 6 essays or reading 5 novels for an elective. Professor Arvind Sharma of the religion department offers a very light courseload.

I am also really excited. I got plenty of rest this summer, and can't wait for my upper level classes. I was in physiology, but I switched into IHI (interdepartmental honors immunology). I am very fond of immunology, but less fond of microbiology, which is why I didn't end up in MIMM.

BIOL 200 is a big course. Everything you see in that course will come back over and over again over your next three years.
BIOL 202 is a tough one. Brutal. There is a lot of material, and some very challenging problems. Take advantage of the quizzes to boost your mark.

I am also taking Math 201. Haha! I'm taking it this fall.

You seem to be taking a lot of heavy courses. You might want to consider balancing your science courses with a nice arts course. If you are a fan of music, you should not finish McGill without having taken 'The Art of Listening'. It's considered to be an 'easy A'.
But, don't feel obliged to take 30 credits this year, unless you are planning to go into Medicine. I made that mistake, and it cost me in the 'Grades' column.

Nice catch! It sure is. Well, it's a hoodie, but yeah, it's their symbol. I bought it shortly after they announced their getting back together. It's their newest logo, each arrow representing each major album they released.

I'm a huuuuuge Tom DeLonge fan (Angels & Airwaves are my absolute favorite and I've been a Blink 182 fan since Enema of the State) so I was, no doubt, very happy to hear Blink had gotten back together. Plus, with Tom keeping AvA going, I'm stoked to see him working with both bands. The creativity in that man's mind...impressive.

I can't cite many specifics, except that the combat just feels way better. It's simply funner to play. The cover system is vastly improved, and at least on PC, I could use almost all of my powers in real time instead of stopping to break up the gameplay. Depending on your play style this is either good or bad, but all powers have a very quick global cool down rather than a long one for each. So it's possible to spam the same power over and over and over without having to wait forever.
