Out of sheer boredom and curiosity, I downloaded FaceGen (the program Monty's been using for the Freelancers). I made Pennsylvania, Arizona and Georgia because it was all I could really think of at the moment. The free download of FaceGen doesn't have the hair or other little doohickeys you need..that and they plaster the SI logo on the face's forehead.

      Pennsylvania:

Next week I have finals, till then I won’t be really on here or anywhere much. The folks said if I screw up they’ll take my laptop. I know I may be 21 but I think they don’t need to revert to the old high school threat.

Even if they take it, it’s not something that would bug me, what would hurt me is failing myself. I’ve come too far to screw up now. Wish me luck.

      Love you,

Thanks everyone for putting up with my last rant.

Mom's gotten us some med insurance (thank goodness) I just don't know what the catch is really. Other than that, I'm just trying to finish this semester in one piece. I miss you guys something fierce.

I finally got to upload some artwork, I am happy.

Monday is the start of crunch time, two more weeks until I'm done.

      Small rant,

First I hear about this bill in Missouri that would ban all forms of birth control (not to mention planned parenthood AND abortion). THEN I find out about over a MILLION idiots have petitioned 'Obamacare'...and NOW my parents have been denied their health insurance due to the whole 'pre-existing conditions' bullshit.

Yea that's right, as of two days ago I am without medical insurance. I have an appointment next month for referral to an endocrinologist, so guess how much that's going to basically spear me through my already small bank account. I'm a college student who already has to pay a shit ton of money for what bills I already have. And all of those fuckers wonder why Canada, France and the UK laugh at us for our stupidity, we deny our own citizens a basic right for health and wellness. Gee, THANKS government.

But NOW I've seen everything when I hear on Tumblr that the government wants to pass a bill that will censor the internet.

..seriously..WHAT. THE. HOLY. PISS. IS. THIS!?

What is WRONG with this country? I swear..I love and am proud to be American, but what bugs the ever-loving crap out of me is why we don't used common fucking sense!

What the hell America?...what the hell?

      (EDIT)

Thanks for your comments everyone. Least to say my mom got us onto a family plan or something from Blue Cross Blue Shield..but she had to pay a lot to get it. and that's just not right..but I also don't know how long we have it for. Someone actually came up to me and gave me contact information for insurance that would take people with preexisting conditions and not gouge them. Thank you very much to them, I have it kept so I can give my mom the contact info.

Also, to those of you worried about the Internet bill, there is -no way- in hell they would censor the internet, the backlash would be too great. Not to mention it was rejected a couple days ago. So no worries internet goers.

Also, fair enough about your brother's hair, I'd guessed the blond-to-brown change was probably recessive to always-brown and dominant over red since my cousin Stephen didn't go through the same change (he's always had brown hair) but we all did and my Dad had red hair when he was younger. I was just wondering since I thought it was usual but since then a few other people have remarked on the drawing saying their hair changed the same way, or a relative like in your case.

    • DocRossim

Well, I guess your Dad must carry the brown eye gene but by some fluke or chance it wasn't expressed in him -- like I said before, similar circumstances can cause a lack of pigment in just one eye during development, meaning someone can have one brown eye and one blue eye, so why not both eyes? It's pretty unlikely that he's a chimera since that's extremely rare, but a chemical imbalance in the womb could explain it (I've read that it has something to do with melanin levels).

    • DocRossim

I didn't know you were a biology major. I only started with the basics because you'd just contradicted yourself by saying that brown eyes are dominant (and so always expressed if the gene is present) and then saying that it skipped a generation (which would suggest a recessive gene) -- and at the end I started talking about chimerism and epigenetics, that's hardly basic. It's not advanced either but it's beyond the highschool stuff at least, I only know about it through wider reading.

Let's... let's leave the eyes alone for a bit. I was more interested in the changing hair colour thing. Did anyone else in your family have that or just your brother?

    • DocRossim

Let's use the example of brown eyes and blue eyes, with a capital B for brown, since it's dominant, and a lowercase b for blue since it's recessive:

Let's say there's a couple, and the man has blue eyes, so his genes are bb and the woman has brown eyes but doesn't carry any recessive gene colours, here genes are BB, so if the couple have children, all the children will have the genes Bb (one allele for brown, one for blue) so all their children will have brown eyes, no exceptions.

If one of those children grows up and has children with a person who has blue eyes, their children have a 50% chance of having blue eyes or brown eyes, as they can either have the alleles Bb or bb.

If one of those children grows up and has children with another person who has brown eyes but carries the recessive gene for blue eyes (so is Bb), their children have a 75% chance of having brown eyes since they can be BB or Bb for brown and have a 25% chance of having blue eyes, since they can be bb for blue.

However, if two blue eyed people have children, they are pretty much guaranteed to have children who have blue eyes, because the blue eye gene is only expressed when it is bb -- blue for both alleles. If they have a child who has brown eyes... that would certainly be surprising. If we are sure that the child is definitely theirs then there are a few instances that could explain this though:

      1) one of the parents is a chimera (two fraternal twin embryos that merged into one person in the womb) and the tissue that makes up the person's eyes is from one twin but their reproductive organs are from the other twin -- this can also cause a person has two different coloured eyes in some cases.
      2) some kind of epigenetic change has caused the brown eye gene to be "switched off" in one of the parents' genomes -- this can also cause a person has two different coloured eyes too.
      3) something in the way the body of one of the parents has developed in the womb has caused their dominant eye pigment not to be expressed -- again, this can also cause a person to have two different coloured eyes.
      4) this is some kind of rare recessive brown eye gene that is not commonly known.

But only recessive genes can skip a generation. That's what makes them recessive.

    • DocRossim

That's what I thought, but you said earlier that you have brown eyes, your Mum has green eyes and your Dad has blue eyes...

I actually meant about their hair colour, has anyone else in the family been blond as a child and then got brown hair as an adult?

Interesting about the eyes though, I thought brown was always dominant.
