      Hey Folks!

Been away from the site for quite a while, due to being busy and distracted as hell, lately. But alas I am back up and running. Finally finding the ability to sort my activities.

Since it's been so long, I've prepared the following summary of Brad's Year 2014, so far:

      1) Launched a website: www.brad-lester.com. Created it to start an online portfolio for my film and photography work. Still a work in progress, but I've been getting some good feedback.

      2) Currently editing a music video. My second attempt at one (the first can be found on my website, with hopefully a much prettier, remastered version on the way). The new one will hopefully be out soon.

      3) Participated in the 48-Hour Film Project for the second year in a row. I got to assistant direct, and the film turned out awesome! A link to the video can also be found on my site, so if you like dark comedy shorts, you should check that one out.

      4) Again with the film stuff... writing a couple of short films, and working on the story for the first part of a feature trilogy. I'm hoping to shoot one of the films within the next year, pending scheduling, funding, and crew. The other short is something I'd like to animate using Source Filmmaker, which I've been trying to learn how to use. But at the moment, priority is given to the writing, because....

      5) ... by the end of the year, I intend to submit applications to the Masters programs for Film at Columbia College (Chicago), University of Texas (Austin), and UCLA. I hope to go to film school by Fall 2015.

      6) Ran my 7th marathon last June, and gearing up for numero ocho in Chicago on October 12th. Should be a big day. If anybody's in Chicago that day, PLEASE COME PARTY WITH ME AFTERWARD!!!!
I promise I won't ask you to carry me.

      7) Trying to catch up on my Xbox 360 games (AC Revelations, Skyrim DLC, replays of ME 3, GTA V, Halo 4, etc.) so that I can finally buy an Xbox One.

      8) In 2 days, I will be officiating a wedding for the first time. I'm all filed with the state of Minnesota, so I can legally perform marriages. My goal: try not to curse or quote The Princess Bride too much. smiley7.gif

      9) Uh... scraping the bottom of the barrel here... I'm halfway through Foundation by Isaac Asimov... so that's cool.

      10) Oh! I bought a new laptop this summer. Sager gaming laptop, that actually has enough RAM and GPU memory to run video editing software and play some semi-current games. Been trying to start up some SW:TOR, since I was a huge fan of it's single-player predecessors.

So that's about it that I can think of. May edit this later. Who knows.

What's up with y'all?! I want details, folks!!!

P.s. 11) I still hate my job that is impossible to describe. See here.

I'm just about most of the way though the Bioshock Infinite: Burial At Sea (Episode 2) DLC I think , and holy crap.
It's reinvigorating my love for the franchise.

I'll be honest... Episode 1 inspired a resounding "meh..." I have nothing negative to say about it, but at the same time it wasn't awe inspiring. It was fun, and I'll leave it at that.
      But Episode 2? Fuck.

I sincerely hope the ending is as amazing as the rest of it, because it feels like the first time I played Bioshock 1, but with deeper insights. Even though I still haven't COMPLETELY figured out Bioshock Infinite... Need to play through it again and/or have a lengthy discussion with other people who have played it. I spent an hour and a half after finishing the game just thinking about it and drawing a diagram of the whole thing, just trying to figure it out. Needs more work, but that's a good thing.

As a consumer, I am pleased.

    • The Long Version, told in 3 parts

In a not-so-recent podcast, Burnie asked the question of why there are so many trilogies in our modern media (books, movies, video games). A valid question, which I, too, have often wondered.

However, the answer is actually pretty logical, and it dawned on me while reading Essentials of Screenwriting by Richard Walters. The abundance of story trilogies can be accredited to (or blamed on) Aristotle. It was actually Aristotle that defined the formula of the modern day narrative:
A complete story has a beginning, a middle, and an end. Three parts.

That formula typically should apply to a whole movie or book, otherwise you leave the audience unsatisfied. However, as anybody knows, there are many stories whose whole stories are too large to fit into one movie or book. So, considering that an entire story arch has to have a beginning, middle, and end, it's often more natural for it to fit into 3 segments, as opposed to 2 or 4.

Is this a rule? Of course not. There are many franchises that are well done, which have 1, 2, 4, or 8 parts to them. In most cases, it seems, these numbers work best for the kind of content where each part is a new story in the same universe, rather than one carrying into the next, but it can work either way.
The trilogy is merely the format that is tailored specifically for how stories are written and told.

Anyway, just thought I'd share that, in case anybody was interested.

Okay, am I the only one who's sick of listening to all the griping about the "extra material" in the Hobbit movies?

Fact: at least 95% of this "extra material" that caused the movies to be split into three parts was written by Tolkien. Every bit of prequel information that ties into the Lord Of The Rings story comes straight from the LOTR appendices and various other books that Tolkien wrote. All of it takes place during the same timeframe as the Hobbit story. Tolkien even intended to rewrite the Hobbit with more of that information.

      Don't believe me?

      IMG_20131213_171441350Marked.JPG

That's why Tolkien fans aren't complaining. And yes... I realize that my possession of a Tolkien encyclopedia makes me a giant nerd.
Now, I'm off to enjoy the new Hobbit movie. First time in a while that I've been excited for a movie.

If you wish to be entertained for a few minutes, feast your eyes on this. Everybody and their dog should check out this video.
My friend Jeremy writes his own comedy/light hearted rap music for fun, and a few weeks ago he asked me to help him make a music video.
The product of a weekend trip up to Hibbing, MN as well as a few weeks of non-stop editing has produced a very fun video.

If you enjoy the video, please share it with others who will, too. Thanks!

This year, I'm seeing a lot of Halloween pictures of women dressed up as various forms of "Sexy Ninja Turtles".
I did not know that was a thing. But apparently that's a thing. A very popular thing. Never seen that before.

Of course, I'm not complaining or chastising. Although, I am legitimately curious to know if there's anything that hasn't been turned into a sexy costume.
Has there been a Sexy Vegetable? Maybe a cucumber. I can't imagine what that would look like.

Well, it's Tuesday and it feels like it should be at least Thursday. This has got to be the slowest week of the year. I have almost nothing to do at work except fight the desire to take a nap.

It's made worse by my excitement for the weekend. On Saturday, I get to go to the St. Paul Beer Dabbler with wired_tl and try probably a few hundred beers.
We went a couple of years ago, and somewhere in the archives is a drunken journal I posted about it.
I'm hoping to find a few new beers to add to my go-to list whenever I want to just buy a six pack of something good.

After that's done, I'll be dragged to Duk Duk Daze, the yearly town carnival for New Hope, MN, to see a fireworks show.... Something tells me the show this year will appear twice as grand, and far more symmetrical, than usual... get it? cause I'll be intoxicated... heh heh

I'd like it to be Saturday already...

    • No rest in Liberty City

Three nights in a row I've had fairly vivid real-life Grand Theft Auto dreams: car chases, handling large piles of money, running and hiding from cops (in one instance, the cops were lead by wired_tl... I must have really been in trouble), etc.

Quite a coincidence having a similar dream 3 times in a row. I haven't even played GTA in quite a while, so I have no idea why. What's more is that they have the slight feel of stress dreams, where I don't feel like I actually got any rest. Maybe it means that I'm supposed to lead a life of crime, or maybe I'm tapping into another universe.
Either way, I hope the next dream has me wielding a bazooka.

Apparently something changed on the site and a lot of people are mad again. Hostile, in fact.

It all looks the same to me. Both the site, and the people complaining about something without much cause or coherency.
I guess the more things change, the more they stay the same.

Well don't get used to it, unless you want to buy a new laptop.
I did find the disks to reinstall your operating system and stuff, so we can get a new hard drive and get it back up and running.

Yeah. I mean I can handle the work load, the reading and such. I love the teacher, I just hate the analysis part. ...mother gave me some coacoa. It's chocolaty good.
...Hey! check out that squirrel. He's climbing upside...
