Whoop de effing do. It's my birthday. And my presents? A lovely (and very shiney) book from Nudge and Feyd, actually received and opened on Friday before last so I knew how to pack it to get it home and so I could thank them personally, a couple of sketches from Nudge, which was very kind of her, a waterstones gift card from my brother, though admittedly he didn't actually buy it, it was got by mother then he payed her. Which is a detail I didn't need to know... And finally, the big one. From my parents, I got......

A yoghurt. For all of 75p. It's a very nice yoghurt. It's a Co-op Toffee Fudge yoghurt. But still.....

As for the day, well it started earlier than I wanted, I had a slow breakfast with the cards for company, then after my brother left (I gotta mention here, both of my parents are down in Cornwall for the weekend) I started having a good day. A few hours of Anno 1404 Special Edition (my main present, that I bought myself because my parents don't want to get me it), then after Lunch, I went to the gym for an hour or so, which was good. Had a good workout, and Mr Hunk the PT was there. Then up to the pub with my brother for a quick drink, then home to get ready for the real celebration. Hiding away with a friend doing nerdy stuff late into the night. So not the worst day I've ever had, but nothing out of the ordinary. An average Saturday, just with cards to commemorate the fact.

      Woo fucking hoo.
For a bit of feedback, and to make me feel horribly guilty for making a big fuss over nothing, what was your worst birthday, watchers?

I feel like the Black Death microwaved. Which is nice.
      My nose is blocked
My sinuses are going crazy big, causing a massive head and neck ache
My throat is feeling like a load of red hot sandpaper got lodged just above the windpipe
      I keep coughing
I feel boiling hot most of the time, but if I try to cool down, I get freezing and have to snuggle up to keep warm. Then get boiling hot
I keep coughing, causing my head to explode with pain
Give me a fever, and it'd be flu. Give me photosensitivity, and it'd be Meningytis, and I'd be in hospital, close to death.
However, it's neither of those things. It's just some little cold. And I'm just whining about how bad it is for sympathy. I don't need to write this journal, but I did. And yes, I'm selfish like that. But with no parents around and no friends to talk to all day, who frankly can blame me?
Anyway, so far the only good thing that has come out of this is that I discovered I like gin.Which is nice.

*waits in the vain hope of some sympathy*

I don't think anyone was upset by your comment, it just sparked a conversation - no bad thing.
My personal opinion would be that, if you're told something is bad-luck and believe in that kind of thing, then it's bad luck; If you don't then it's not. Even Pratchett seems to side on the "world is formed by what we believe" concept (Small Gods etc.)

Now quit with the blaming yourself over nothing or Bernard will set the Shawn clones on you wink.png

I think we've had a misunderstanding - I'm neither upset, nor offended! I appreciate the heads up for where a potential job might be, when I finish studies. There's nothing you need to apologise for - I should have thanked you initially for letting me know about it!

I did apply to Future just over a decade ago; PC Review wanted additional reviewers, and before that I'd applied to Arcade magazine (a good magazine, and surprisingly short lived). I only ever got a reply from Arcade, along the lines of "thank you for applying [I'd had to write a sample review]; however the vacancy has been filled, but your application will be put on record, and we will consider you for future vacancies". (not word for word, I confess)

I rearranged the content of this letter in my head, and realised it said "don't call us, we'll call you." Someone I knew at the time claimed they were legally required to advertise the jobs, but they tend to be filled by picked individuals - I don't know if this is true, but I do see many of the same names floating around games reviews now that I did 15 years ago.

It's definitely something I'd be up for, don't get me wrong - games were my first major interest in life, I studied computer programming when I left school with the intention of becoming a games programmer/designer, and I still have the idea for the greatest RPG never made in mind. Just... somewhere it all went wrong. I learnt to a decent basic level (I got a distinction with a City & Guilds exam in C/C++), but it was short of what was required for the industry, who also work a "three years experience" closed door system.

Damn, I feel like I'm talking about another life. It's so long ago, so much has happened... correction, so little has happen for seven of the last ten years, followed by three years of both life and living getting busy. Looking back at this is a strange experience.

The short of it is I'd be up for games reviews, and suspect that I'd be rather good at it - 22 years solid playing experience, writing experience, programming experience - and I should definitely take a serious look at it. But I need to graduate first.

      -Peter

EDIT: Oh, and Arcade was based in Bath too - it was the same issue about potentially having to move then as well.

      In reply to BernardBlack, below:

Eyes turn red - keep running, but it'll never be quite fast enough?

Anyway, Robin, the card arrived a couple of days before Christmas, so it was perfect timing! Thank you very much! It's been a quite a small Christmas this year - not many cards, not many presents, not many visitors, just me and my parents, so everything which has come from everybody is not only appreciated, but emphasised strongly this year!

I would have sent you a card in return if I'd had an address... it still wouldn't have arrived yet, mind...

As for colds, that is unfair, but at least this is the time of year when you are most able to do nothing but rest, and not get people telling you that actually you should be going out for 20 mile runs to sweat it out, or drinking one of six hundred different forms of medication (thanks to the chemists being closed). You can just stop, relax, and recover in your own time and your own way.

As for East India Company; it's not a game I've heard of before, though I've just gone and looked it up. It definitely looks promising - you're having fun with it, then?

eyes change from light green to black, depending on mood.

      green = happy
      light brown = content, bored
dark brown = annoyed, disgruntled, extremely bored, concentrating
black = run the fuck away from me

Yeah it seems to have been something which several people have been interested in interpreting in their own way, which is nice.. I've been a bit lax lately with it due to personal reasons and I'm hoping to get back into full swing soon, so with any luck the BP-AWESOME will continue.

Well, it might make a good initial fire-lighter, but too much newspaper tends to be self defeating - the ash usually ends up smothering the fire it has created, and this much newspaper certainly would. Note to self: if journalism doesn't work out, consider a job in arson.

Do I trust journalists? No! I'm studying to become one, I'm finding out all the little elements of bullshit that sneak in, how a majority (it's something like 60 - 70%) of news stories in the quality newspapers are rewrites of press releases with no further investigation or verification done... So, that means ultimately I'm reading something which has little actual news content. Wait a minute...

... Ah well, it's still fun to read in a cynical frame of mind. The paper's are so predictable; partly it's because they have an editorial angle, and partly because I think time constraints results in them writing the stories people expect to read, no more, no less.

There is the rule about throwing things out - if you haven't needed it in six months, you don't need it and can get rid of it. By this logic, all my winter clothes are heading to the charity shops.

It makes me feel good about myself.

      And cold.

Well, I'm suffering a lot of "why the hell have I got that?". I've already managed to fill a couple of bin bags, and four bags for charity. It's starting to feel clearer - although not, I hasten to point out, tidier.

My biggest problem, with regards to space and the time to sort it, is that I have a habit of not reading the newspapers I buy, and as I'm studying journalism I feel that I should... So I keep them to catch up on the news. But you need to be in the right frame of mind to read news which is a bit out of date... so I come back to it later, and the newspapers keep piling up...

... last year I ended up with a ridiculous mass of newspapers, which I finally cleared using the time most other people merely thought of as "June". They're starting to build up again...
