      My away time.

Earlier this summer I had told a few people that I was going to make more of an effort to stay involved with Grifball. That didn't happen. Allow me to introduce you to who caused that.

      Away time..

I would like to appologize for being away so much.

I had my wisdom teeth out on June 16th. 4 of 5 of them anyway and since then it's been interesting.

I was ok at first but I've been running 100+ fevers for almost 7 days now that have been topping out at 102.5 more often than not. I've had a few doctors appointments so far and we don't know quite what's wrong yet. I have a few more appointments already scheduled.

Please bear with me. I'll be more active when I'm well again, which will hopefully be soon.

      Teeth

Just to keep people in the loop. Wisdom teeth came out to day. 4-5 were removed. The last was so tight against the bottom of my sinus cavity that they felt it safer to leave it there for now.

Doc told my mum that now the other tooth is out of the way the little one should swing down on it's own to where they can just simply pull it later.

I do not remember this. I remember getting in the chair at 8:30 this morning and getting my first round of drugs to knock me out. Then they turned the lights out and I remeber watching the heart monitor and listening to the beep...beep...beep. Next thing I know it 4:30 in the adter noon and i'm being woken up by my mum to take more motrin.

Going slight stir crazy as I'm not allowed out of bed for the first 24-36 hours on doctors.

I WANT TO GO DO SOMETHING. Stay in bed is driving me nuts.

      Life lesson

Just because the pirogi looks cool enough to touch, and is in fact cool enough to pick up with ones hand.. that does not mean that the filling inside is cool enough to just pop into your mouth and munch on.

      Owies...

In other news.. I have to pick up a 6th shift this week which means 2 of my others are being trimmed down a bit. If I don't there's no one to close the store Friday night. Fun!

      Olive controllers x2

For context I'm working on some secret photoshop stuff.

I spent almost an hour setting up a map and a game type only to realize I left overshields on. Scraped what I'd done turned off shields and repeated the set up. Another 20 minutes later and I've got my puppets all lined up. I leave them all still for a minute so that I can get good screen shots from the film.

Then something possesed me to try and get fancy.

I go to swing the sword with puppet 1 which is tied to the olive controller that came with my 360. Instead I grabbed the olive controller that came with my copy of ODST; the controler for puppet 2... The one with a grav hammer.

End point, all my puppets went flying and a lot of time went down the drains. I'm just hoping to salavage some of the work at this point.

Review: Cake Mania 3 for DS

If you've played one Cake Mania game you've played them all; essentially. I've played the first installment as well and Mania 2 and now the third one all on my DS and the mechanics don't change. Customer enters store, hand them menu, customer says what they want, you make the cake, hand the cake over, collect money. At the end of each round you can buy upgrades for the equipment in your shop if you have enough cash saved up. The process is simple to grasp and addicting, which is most likely why the series continues to thrive.

As always the story line seems sort of tacked on, but in Cake Mania 3 Jill is getting married and she worried she's forgetting something. Then someone knocks this starry orb off a table, it shatters, and scatters Jill and her friends and family through time and around the globe. For example, Grandpa is found at the top of a pyramid in Ancient Egypt and one of her friends is sent back with the dinosaurs and cavemen. In order to save the day Jill has to open up cake shops to appease someone in order to get her loved one back safely as well as the shard of the mystic orb thing that the broke in the beginning. In the case of the Dino's and Cavemen, the head T-Rex won't tell Jill where her friend is unless she makes him happy. In Grandpa's case, Jill needs an audience with Pharaoh in order to get Grandpa down from the top of the pyramid. Story line aside, game mechanics, as mentioned before, are pretty much the same as you would find in the rest of the series. If you've seen one game then you know what the graphics look like to.

In this installment the top screen lets you watch your customer's happy levels and all the action take place in the lower touch screen. This is where my first complaint comes in. Everything looks to crowded. In Cake Mania the screen actually scrolled side to side so all the buttons on everything were the same size and the cakes your customers wanted were displayed large enough it made it easy to see what their order was. Sure the side scrolling could be slightly annoying in some of the higher levels when you have to fly to meet demands but it's far preferable to the route the series has taken. Cake Mania 2 and 3 condense everything down so it fits all in the single touch screen. At the lower basic levels, this is still fine since everything is easily viewable still. The buttons on the frosting machine are different sizes though which make the end ones tough to 'click' on since they're smaller and makes mistakes easy.

The problems really start when you begin getting customers asking for double layer cakes with toppers. For me this happened in the third time zone I sent Jill too. I quickly found myself repeating levels over and over because the cake icons were so small I couldn't tell sometimes that they had wanted a double layer cake with a topper until I'd made what I thought they wanted and they rejected it. By this point in the game the curve had progressed to a point that if everyone wasn't going out the door fully happy you weren't making enough cash to get to the next level in the zone. As a result I ultimately quit playing the game shortly after this point.

The game is meant to be just that and whilst the first two zones were easy and a breeze, anything beyond that point had me feeling like I was smashing my head against the wall because the game user interface was to small for me to accurately see what I was suppose to be doing. If the game is this annoying for me I can only imagine how younger kids must get annoyed.

Something they could easily do to help correct this is instead of showing the customers order in just the lower screen, showing it in the upper screen as well. Right now the upper screen image is only used for showing how many happy hearts they have and the characters goofy animations. There's lots of free screen real estate up there though and a larger image of what they want would go a long way.

The only nice plus to this installment was the mini-games. At three points during each time zone you get a mini-game which is a chance to earn extra cash. The games are pretty much more matching. In the first you have a set order of three different cakes you must make from the ones coming down on a conveyor belt. Now you can still make and box cakes that aren't in your order, but the mini-game doesn't end until you've met the order. In the second, customers come in and you have to piece together their orders from cakes on a conveyor belt and then hand them over. In the last, the top screen shows a requested cake and you have to match it to a large set that are already made in the lower screen. Of the three mini-games the second was the only one that drew my ire at times. There were times when all my customers wanted triangle cakes with blue frosting and the game was only giving me triangle cakes with white and that mini-game ends automatically if you let to many unused cakes go by. It was very frustrating to get very little extra cash on that particular mini-game due to something I had no control over.

Overall the game is decent. If you're a fan of the series you'll most likely find enjoyment with Cake Mania 3. Part of me has to wonder if the games aren't designed for DS systems with larger screens. I still play on my original DS that I got ages ago. It could be that the game designers created the screens for use on a DS Lite, DSi, or DSi XL all of which have screens bigger than my little original DS and might clear up the order viewing issues I had completely. Whilst I'd recommend Cake Mania for little kids to help refine motor skills and learn shapes and colours, I'm not sure I could say the same with Cake Mania 3 given the viewing issues I had unless playing the game on a DS with larger screens clears this problem up.

      Beta/death/wangs

Recently got accepted for the closed beta of a new MMO. It took me 3 days just to get the thing to work enough to log in.

I'm not sure who their techs are... but they make me worried. I resolved the issue myself by just uninstalling the game, rebooting, and reinstalling. No where in any of their support stuff did they even suggest that.

      And death...

I most likely had a fairly close brush with it.

There are 2 ways to leave the parking lot at work. One is the normal one everyone uses and the other goes up the back side of the building. The other day I just randomly decided to go up the back side of the building. At the end of the row right where I'd turn is a Karate Dojo and I'd slowed down to look at the signs in their window. Just as I was about to keep pulling forward into the turn a car came screaming up the side of the building. The girl must have been doing 60 or 70 easy.

If I hadn't stopped and slowed down she either would have plowed right into the side of my car or hit me head on as I was making the turn.

      Wangs
Recently we've had some annoying kids calling the store harassing myself and they other two girls that work with me. Yesterday it reached a new low. The kid on the phone asked for a Hanna Montana game on the 360. I looked it up. Told him we had it and it's price. He then stuttered and I wound up having to repeat the information again 5 or 6 times. After the last time the kid asked me to keep talking cause he was looking at a picture of Miss Montana and wanking off to my voice whilst speaking with me. I hung up then emailed our district manager about it.

We're fairly certain that *69 works so next time we get them on the phone we've been instructed to use that and then call the cops on them.

      I hate kids sometimes.

      Photoshop

Got a copy to work and it makes me happy. It's a different version from what I'm used to and I don't have everything set back up the way I like it, but it's getting there.

If anyone needs a graphic done for Grifball let me know.

      Photoshop?

Anyone know where I might be able to get my hands on a copy of Photoshop?

I'm struggling with GIMP right now but it's not the same as having my Photoshop install that got blown away when I had to reformat my hard drive a while back.

I don't even care which version it is as the one I had was Photoshop CS and that was just fine for what I needed.

If anyone has a lead on this let me know. Thanks.

So for the club I joined at school we recently made a website to use to contact one another on days we don't have school. I even won the vote for secretary by default. Within 5 minutes of the sites existence I wish I had moderator/admin abilities. My tech OCD wants to smite the damned site, but the practical side wants to just fix the admins stupidity with the site and use it for relevant information like I had expected it to be. I thought you'd find this humorous.

      Hey Cleo,

Long shot, but I remember a long time ago you mentioned that if I needed help with anything to give you holla, so I'm hoping you can help me out with something :P

Do you have copies of the different grifball themes lying around somewhere? the downloads on grifball.com no longer work, I've got the original theme but would also like to get my hands on the remix's if I can.

      Cheers,
      Scav.
