        Haha true

Ahhh ok yeah, thats what a lot of people get told unfortunately. The great thing about art as a career though is that it doesn't matter if you studied it formally or not. :)

A big pond xD It's in guildford it can't be that bad smiley8.gif

Er yeah right now i do a lot of all of those, guess i was always told art is not a valid career path so i took music/engineering instead. But yeah i'd do almost any job at a games dev really.

It's not bad out here besides the distance... we have a big pond and stuff :P

That sounds awesome, are you more into sound and music than art then since its your main area of study?
I sometimes walk past the sound room at Lionhead and its all dark and cool looking but that's about as much involvement as I have haha.

Oh nice! I'd say i've not been around there at all, just to the hospital. The only dev i know are the ones near the highstreet, so like hellogames, Mm, and EA.

Sound design is so fun, only issue with it is you kind of need all the equipment, it's not like art where you can go get a cheap drawing tablet and photoshop on a student's licence. I was lucky enough to get the chance to mess around in one of Mm's sound design rooms. It's so nice smiley12.gif

lol... I pretty much know nothing about this area.

Yep, it's in the research park next to the hospital. Good walking exercise every day! EA has Criterion here too, right near the Odeon.

Thats funny actually since music is something I'd like to learn properly at some point... but just for fun :3

Hahaha it's still in the county though!

Is lionhead studios based in guildford too? So many devs around here it's amazing.
Aww thanks! I'm trying, though I do primarily study music and sound design. smiley1.gif

It's a really powerful piece of software especially for 3D concepting. I'm looking forward to getting stuck in to it. :P

Noted, Thanks bro! I recently bought a Wacom Intous, the £50 one, I've been playing around with it... quite the jump from my iPad to say the least. Also I was looking at Zbrush a few days ago... and WOW! it looks fantastic but expensive!

Right now I use a Wacom Intuos 4 large and Photoshop CS5. I also sometimes use Sketchup for block outs and I'm about to lean Zbrush to incorporate that into my workflow too.

        Hey thanks dude! :)

Two really important things; fundamentals and design sense.

Fundamentals - lighting, value, composition, anatomy, perspective, colour theory etc. In order to be able to draw and design from imagination you MUST have well developed fundamental skills... to copy a still life you just need good observation, to visualise something that doesn't exist convincingly, you need to know what's actually going on. So study the shit out of that.

Design sense - This is important because a concept artist is really a designer, a visual problem solver before anything else... the art is just the means to communicate your ideas to others. Absorb as much about the world around you as you can. If you want to create creatures and robots then study nature, machines, etc. The more you learn about things you want to design the more a) you'll get a natural sense of what looks "cool", what shapes go well together etc, and b) how things actually function. Design for entertainment doesn't need to really work, but it must look semi-functional and convincing or your audience will call you out and your design will look crap. Both of these things are super important for good design.

There is of course a load more to this and I could write for 6 more hours, but I hope this helps as a start. Oh, and as for being self taught, Google the Gnomon Workshop if you don't know of them already. :)
