Everyone needs to see "12 Years a Slave". It is such an unbelievably intense and raw movie, so amazingly acted, I can't even tell you. I'm actually so emotionally drained I need to take a nap.

If this thing doesn't get nominated and win the big Oscars all around there better be riots. Because it deserves every one of them.

      Go see it. NOW.

    • Goodbye, buddy.

      CoraOrtiz

Today we had to put down our big dog, Lexx. He was four years old, a Bernese Mountain Dog. He was adorable, lovable and gentle (though stubborn as hell sometimes) and overall a big mush. He thought he was human half the time, giving 'hugs' by wrapping a paw around my ankle and leaning his head against me. He'd go up to the humans in a dog park and be wary of the dogs, unsure what he was supposed to do. He loved Layla, our little Papillon, and they were BFFs.

Lexx was diagnosed with cancer of the spleen back at the beginning of July. We were all devastated, and have done the best we could to give him a comfortable life with the expectancy of two to three months. Well it's two months later and we knew it was time to let him go. It's hard, losing him and losing him so young. His breed usually lives 7 to 10 years. My father's taking it hard, he immediately removed his bowls and bed and stuff as soon as we got home and put them in the car to take them to storage. I wasn't happy about that, but at the same time maybe not having so many things with his scent around will keep Layla from noticing too much that he's gone and keep her from going into a depression. We'll see. Prayer for comfort and peace are most welcome.

      I'll miss you, buddy.

    • NYCC

      CoraOrtiz

So...I'm taking the day off tomorrow because a) I have too many days left of vacation and the company frowns on taking days after Labor Day and b) NYCC tickets go on sale at their Midtown location (aka right outside Port Authority where I get in)! I loathe having to get up even earlier than I do for work, just to get there two hours ahead of the store opening but quite frankly, if the scalped tickets on ebay are any indication, these are going to go super fast. Plus I'm picking up tickets for friends as well.

I'm hoping to cosplay this year, provided I have enough money to get what I need. My coworker and friend is going as Kate Bishop aka Hawkeye (the OTHER Hawkeye) and I joked I should go as one of the "track suit mafia". Now I kind of really want to do that because it'd be hilarious. If you haven't picked up what's known as the "everyday" Hawkeye comic, I highly recommend it. It's about Clint's life when he's not being an Avenger which basically boils down to him getting into trouble whether he likes it or not. Kate Bishop is there as his friend and person to bail him out when things get real bad. And the tracksuit mafia? Well they're the Russian mobsters that used to own the apartment building Clint lives in that he bought out from under them. But he'd managed to piss them off before that. They're also known to mostly use the words "Bro" and "Seriously", so it's kind of become a thing. That and their cheap tracksuits they always wear.

So yes, provided all things go well and there aren't a psycho amount of campers outside the comic shop I should be getting myself a 3 day pass. Hope to see any of you there who plan on going!

    • Jurassic Park in 3D

      CoraOrtiz

      So...I am still alive, yes.

I went and saw Jurassic Park in 3D IMAX tonight to test out a theory. You see, technically I guess I'm half blind. Or something. My brain focuses vision out of my right eye more than my left. Been like this since I was three.

Yes. So when I transitioned to contacts back in high school, I didn't need a prescription for the left eye, I was told, because it wasn't going to get any better or worse so why waste the money? A decade and change later, and I realized that maybe the reason I'm not seeing the 3D in 3D movies is because I was missing this prescription. When I was a kid, I specifically remember seeing the Captain Neo (Michael Jackson 3D ride from I think was Disneyworld? Anyone? I have a bootleg DVD of it, it existed) 3D work fantastically, and when I was a teenager before the contacts, I went to Busch Gardens with a friend and went on a Pirates 3D thing, and THAT worked.

But everything after contacts - Avatar, Journey to the Center of the Earth, Polar Express, Avengers - none of it worked. Frustrated, I realized maybe asking for a prescription for the left eye was what I needed.

And so tonight I tried that, with a contact in both eyes. And it did work! Marginally. And I discovered that you have to keep your head at a certain angle to maintain the effect. What a pain. I'm sure the effect would have been stronger if I had glasses with a stronger prescription (the contacts only go so far.) It was mostly environmental (leaves, objects, people, depth of field really) but hey, it was nice to sense and see SOMETHING.

      Also: DINOSAURS!!!!

Well it's here, and so far in my neck of the woods we're okay. Lost internet and cable for a little (we were in the middle of watching Casino Royale anyway) but it's back now. Power flickers now and then. It's still crazy windy and we have a small branch or two down in the backyard (one had a glancing blow at the house).

So far, transportation is still suspended so I don't think I'll be going to work tomorrow either, depends on if NJ Transit lifts it between now and tomorrow morning.

In the meantime, enjoy this cool pic (yes it's blurry, sorry, it was in a pinch and on manual focus with little to see through the view port) of what my friend called 'green lightning'. She thought it might have been transformers blowing (she saw it in her neck of the woods and she's in West Islip) but when we saw it it seemed to flash in places where there weren't transformers. ::shrug:: Either way it was pretty crazy.

It's better than you'd think. Once you get past the initial GRRR part, it really does turn into a fun show. Plus Grimm is awful, lol. No offense, but the only character on that worth watching is the Big Bad Wolf, but everyone else sucks.

      • CoraOrtiz

Funny, I love Grimm. I like that it's dark, and what they do with the different creatures and how they just try to mostly chill in society, and how there's always old fueds and stuff. I like the chars, but yeah, BBW stole the show by far.

I dunno if i can get pas the GRRR part for Once Upon a time. Meh, I'm watching too much television as it is. If I catch it, fine, but I'm just not gonna plunk down for it. I"m getting too old for this epic tv watching lol that's why I tried to give it up after LOST. Tried, mind you.

Check this out: Sean Bean is a bad ass

There is lots of pop culture commentary going on before and after, but it really gets good when he talks about the Sean Bean barfight incident. my favorite part? "Sean should go home and impregnate April to breed an Army of super babies with a slight case of alcoholism" I literally laughed out loud at that one. enjoy... Squid

So I was going to ask you why you hadn't mentioned the new Predators movie because, well, I thought Michelle Rodriguez but it turns out it was actually Alice Braga, who I had never heard of but looks totally like her and sounds enough like her in the trailer to totally fool me... so I'm just sharing this to see if you agree with me or not.
