I can't find a link for it, but basically Bandai said they wouldn't be providing any more Sentai footage for Power Rangers (which they displayed pretty prominently with Samurai Sentai, where everybody fights with katanas and summons origami robots). Disney has announced that they will be making more Power Rangers, which leads me to wonder what direction the show will go.

      Any ideas?

Well, it appears that Obama won the election (in what we'll refer to as a landslide victory). Let's see if his change is what we're really hoping for.

It tastes like cough syrup. It also goes on record as the first hard beverage I ever drank (on account of it being my 21st birthday, of course). I now realize that 21 is when your birthdays start to suck (also Monday birthdays just suck in general). That said, I will be having some kind of celebration with my family this Saturday, so maybe it won't suck so bad.

In other news, my Wisdom tooth finally emerged from the gumline. I was hoping it would clear my back molar, but the pain in my jaw is telling me otherwise. I'm hoping it doesn't get too bad because I'm don't really have any time to see a dentist until mid December (when finals end).

    • Some Anime Deserves to Be Forgotten

      Crash

Okay, it's not often I complain about stupid and trivial things (at least, to my knowledge), but seriously, I saw a really stupid anime on Friday, and I still can't get over how stupid it was. I'm not sure how familiar you are with Black Jack 21, so I'll explain the basic concept (from what I saw in the first episode). Black Jack, the titular character, was caught in some kind of explosion that took off part of his face and injured/killed his mother, and after that day, inspired by the medical technologies that saved his life, he decided to become a surgeon. I mean, that's a premise that's almost well and good, but I have a hard time taking a surgeon seriously when he looks like this:
      index-ova.jpg
Secondly, due to a lot of red tape and bureaucracy, he decided to abandon his medical license and charge people tons of money to come to him, which gets on the nerves of the board of medicine, who subsequently has him arrested. While he's in jail, a client comes to him asking if he can operate on his son, but due to the circumstances, he can't, so the client (who's a billionaire, by the way) goes and hires the best licensed surgeon in the country. Consequently, the operation is a success, but because this was some other surgeon, the operation is too successful and the child dies suddenly a few weeks later because too much of his disease was cured at once.

The billionaire gets angry and has the chief of the medical board's son shot in retribution. He wasn't killed, but he's in critical condition, and the only person who can save him is (pause for effect) Black Jack, who is released from jail and given a medical license, which he then rejects in exchange for a ridiculous fee from the chief of the board of medicine. He operates on the child with the help of his assistant (who is a child maybe 8-10 years old?) and they miraculously save the chief's child.

Actually, when I put this in a synopsis, it doesn't sound so stupid, but believe me, you can't take the show seriously. The art style does not reflect the atmosphere they're trying to put on. I feel bad for being hard on this show, because Wikipedia casts the manga in a much different light (and it apparently won some kind of award?), and apparently it was created by the same person who made Astro Boy, which might explain the goofy art style and the lack of presence behind the drama. Still, I thought this show was so stupid that it stayed in my thoughts for a good solid day, and finally had to just put them out there. Also, maybe I should stop watching anime made for children.

    • I Meant To Post This Yesterday

      Crash

Okay, it's been a while since my last post. Let's see. . . what's happened since then? Well, I went back to school, and started my 3rd year there. My classes this semester look to be interesting as I start my first Interprofessional Project (Improving communication at the Drive-Thru). Thus far, we've been outlining our plans behind the project and addressing the many, many problems that plague the Drive-Thru experience. McDonalds is sponsoring our research, and it would be cool to see them put it to use when all is said and done. Also, I returned to my on-campus job (Production Crew) and turned in a 53-hour timesheet for the last pay period, mainly because we're supposed to have 20-25 people, and as of that time we had 9.

As far as my personal life is concerned, seeing the Watchmen trailer made me go and read the graphic novel. It's a pretty good story and I'm totally looking forward to the movie this March. If you haven't read it yet, I wholeheartedly suggest you do. Also I kinda got back into videogames. I just bought Spore this morning, and while ny friends thought it was really shallow, I have much enjoyed it. I'll agree that the gameplay is very shallow, but the creation tools are where it's at. This game is what MMOs should be, and if Maxis had gone the extra mile and made it an MMO, this probably would've gotten better reviews. That said, most reviews are giving it 9/10, so there's not much more that an addition would give it.

Just picked up the new Dragonforce album today, and was shocked when it didn't sound exactly like their last 3 albums. Granted, ZP Theart still wails on and on about immortal warriors and their eternal victoriousness (it just wouldn't be Dragonforce without that), but Dave Mackintosh actually does something other than single stroke for the entire album. This most likely has to do with most of their new songs being a lot slower. It may be the dawn of a new Dragonforce, but if you liked them before, you'll like them all the same now.

    • These dreams go on. . .

      Crash

Yeah, I switched from Aerosmith to Heart, whatever. Anyway, I meant to post this weird dream I had a few days ago, but it keeps slipping my mind and, consequently, I lose a little more of it each day, so I'ma try to relay it as best as I can remember it.

I'm in a sorta run-down apartment complex (tile floors, cement walls, cheap wooden furniture), and a bunch of guys with various weapons (mainly knives and revolvers) walk in and start threatening me in a sort of apathetic way. Also, these guys are all kinda nerdy college kids.

My first instinct is to steal the pistol from the guy sitting in a big armchair next to me, As I try to wrench it away, he doesn't really seem to try to fight back, he just starts making wisecracks about how hard it is for me to do that. I finally pull the gun away from him, and he says something along the lines of "Well, what are you gonna do now?" while the rest of the gang starts looking at me a little more intensely.

I almost just drop the gun, but then I come upon the realization that this is a dream (probably the second time I've gone lucid in a dream) and tell myself that none of these people are real, so it's cool if I shoot them. I fire a few shots in the air, and the gang members start running. I chase them out of the room and they start getting away down the hall, so I shoot one in the leg, causing him to fall (though no one stops to help him, they all just keep running). As he gets back on his knees, I point the gun to his head, waiting for the police.

The police show up a little later and I casually throw the gun to the side and put my hands behind my head while they cuff me and the other guy. Unfortunately, there wasn't any evidence pinning that guy to the gang and there is a lot of evidence showing that I shot him and threatened him at gunpoint, so he goes free and I go to jail. Fortunately, I still have control and rewind to the point where the gang walks in on me.

I run into a nearby room and stay out of sight (with the knowledge that the cops will show up soon), but the gang people have seen me already. Strangely, they don't seem all that interested in trying to kill me for a while, despite their threats of violence. When they do come at me, I close the door, fasten the deadbolt, and start getting things to brace the door with, staying clear of the immediate range of the door (since at least one guy has a pistol), though nobody tries to shoot at me. I get kinda fuzzy at this point, but I kinda remember the cops showing up and taking the nerd gang guys in.

As they're booking everyone, I ask one of the officers if it would have been a good idea to start shooting at the gang members, and I can't quite remember his words, but I think it was something along the lines of "No."

    • Late Night and NBC Studios

      Crash

Well, I missed yesterday's journal, but I can recap: Going to NBC Studios kinda sucks. Nobody there likes tourists, and you get yelled at and ordered around. When we were waiting in line to see Late Night with Conan O'Brien, this one security guard kept yelling at us and telling us to "Hold it up."

Anyway, on to Late Night. The first thing you notice when you enter the studio is that you barely have to move your head to see the entire set, it's all just framed to look bigger on TV. There's a brief warmup by Brian McCan and the Max Weinberg 7, and then Conan comes out for a few minutes before the show. When we attended the show, some guy in the front came in to hug Conan, and so Conan let him hug Max, who in turn, gave the guy a pair of his sticks.

After the end of the show, Conan sang to the closing credits music, and then we were asked to stay back to film an audience reaction shot for today's show. (continued in comments)

I'm making these posts from my Centro, so forgive any formatting errors and lack of pics.

Well, today was the first day of my New York vacation. Well, not quite. I left the airport at 9:25 am on what was supposed to be a 2 hour 10 minute trip. About halfway through our trip, we noticed that the plane took a sudden sharp turn, and we were informed that, due to inclement weather, we had been put in a holding pattern for 25 minutes. Half an hour later, we were informed that the weather had gotten worse, and that we were stopping at Pittsburg for fuel and may be delayed as long as 1 hour. A few hours of airport eggrolls and ice cream later, we finally arrive at Laguardia Airport at 4:00 pm, 5 and a half hours delayed.

Once we got to our hotel (The Flatotel), we discovered that our room was much bigger than we first thought. By this I mean we expected one room, and we got a 5-room suite. Unfortunately, the room focused on quantity rather than quality. (continued in comments)

      Crash

Well, it happens to everyone. Today, I discovered that I had accrued some overdraft charges in my checking account due to sudden and large expenses that I hadn't expected, or really been informed of. I originally planned to make this the core of the journal, but looking at it a bit more closely, I think I managed to go through the all the stages of loss as it happened. I will now summarize the experience:

      Denial:
-"Why's that number red? Maybe it's a mistake"
-"Shit! I gotta check my purchases now, maybe someone stole my identity!"
-"What's this huge purchase? That can't be mine!"

      Anger:
-"Fucking school bookstore! They said I had paid for my books!"
-"The fuck?! I'm paying more in overdraft fees than I paid for any of this shit!"

      Bargaining:
-"You know, maybe if I tell the bank what happened, they'll refund me the charges. They have to, right?"

      Depression:
-"I needed that money. I don't have a job, I don't have nothin'. What am I gonna do?"
-"Why does this shit happen to me?"

      Anger again:
-"FUCK! I DON'T HAVE ANY MONEY! FUCKING SCHOOL BOOKSTORE!"

      Acceptance:
-"You know, it's not that much, and I've got some extra in savings. I bet it'll turn out okay."

    • Spore Creature Creator (PC)

      Crash

For the last week or so, I've been playing around with the Spore Creature Creator. I've had absolutely retarded amounts of fun with it, so I figured I'd fill in people who may not have been in the know.

As its name suggests, Spore Creature Creator allows you to build creatures for Spore (which comes out some time in September). It's really easy to pick up and use, with a drag-and-drop creature-building mechanic, and pieces can be resized either with the mouse wheel or their own custom resizing options. While it has its simplicity, there's also a degree of complexity to it as well. For example, when you place limbs on a creature, the limbs are separated into joints, each of which can be dragged around, embiggened, shrunk, etc. Also, after you build your creature, you can test them out in a simulated environment where you can have them run, jump, dance, and interact with their children, and 99% of the time, no matter how crazy you make a creature look, all of its animations run perfectly.

These degrees of complexity allow you to make virtually anything you want. On the Spore community page, I've seen everything from rhinos and spiders up to motorcycles, battlemechs, Yoshi, and The Flying Spaghetti Monster. Furthermore, the simplicity translates here as well because adding another player's creature to your game is as simple as downloading its image and dragging it into your Spore Creature Creator game. No, I'm not making that up. I don't even get how that works.

For those interested in checking it out, both the full and trial versions of the game are available here. The trial version is free, but only has 25% of the parts (which is still an ample amount if you're looking to waste a few hours), and the full version costs $10. My only real gripe is that if you get it via direct download, you have to use EA's download manager (which is best described as "complete and utter shit"). Still, this game has kept me immensely entertained for about 4 days now, and the Spore community page keeps dishing out newer and better creatures to check out.

If you want to check out some of my creations, my Spore profile is here.

Well you probably could play it a lot since it's a loooong game, and there are like five of them now. And when you finish those, you could move on to the Fire Emblem games (which I actually like better; it's like Advance Wars, but RPG-style in that your units level up and are not expendable).

Good to hear you aced your 13 credits! You ass-kicker.

And yes, having friends around is definitely nice. That's a big part of the reason I decided to stay in Wayne over the summer instead of going to Arkansas, where I literally know nobody but my parents. That would have been an awesome three months.

You're just now getting into Advance Wars? Geeez! You're behind the times. But at least, I suppose, you have a ton of gameplay to go before you run out. I will admit I haven't played the most recent one... It's been a long time since I've played handheld games or any sort, for whatever reason. But which game did you start with? The first one, or the last one? Or some crazy in-the-middle one?

I usually try to cage my animals, but somehow I keep getting babies when the animals are caged. I eventually give up and mark all females for slaughter.

Well, from what I understand, animals aren't supposed to be able to reproduce when placed in cages. However, if a creature is pregnant when it's caged, it will still give birth. At the very least, all the younglings would hover around the cage, no.

Speaking of humanity, I always build execution chambers into my fortress if I have cage traps. I never considered this to be weird until I talked to a person who hadn't played the game. One of the challenges I was thinking about taking up was building an entire prison complex in my fort for PoWs.

Hmm... Haven't gotten really that far into that part of gameplay and fort design yet. I usually don't bother with prisoners and just kill everything with a mixture of traps and military forces.

The most I've ever really gotten into machinery was playing with water pump towers and using floodgates as disappearing walls, mostly used to block entry into my fort. (Although I've gotten into the habit of using drawbridges lately.)

I've never considered editing the raw files, though. I've always considered having war dragons, though my experience with basic tame dragons tells me that they don't fare so well.

For me, just it adds a little variety in the game. I made two different, more primitive versions of goblins, and downloaded an Orc mod (nasty little buggers, them) and other primitive civs mod using all of the different animal people already present in the game.

Hell, I never knew multiple trade caravans could arrive at once and all hang out in the same trade depot.

oh yeah, there's also making your own critters too.

Holy damn, I'm surprised at how fast 1000 FPS looks like... I mean stuff just... happen.

Really though, I'm more of a "humane" player, preferring to stick loose creatures in cages, sticking all the horses on one cage, all the dogs in another, etc. Although one might consider having a huundred or so dogs in a cage hardly humane...

I don't know. One solution I've considered to eliminating the cat problem was ti remove them as pets entirely.

Although I've had other fun with pets too, like making most of the large predatory animals trainable so I could have things like war cougars.

I also don't viciously Murder Elf caravans. Surprisingly, I've never gotten complaints from them about the amount of trees I'm cutting down.

You and me both. My most powerful system is a laptop, running at 2.26GHz with two cores, and DF runs pretty fast at first... but once things start to get croweded, everything slows down quite a bit. Being able to run it with two cores... or even quad cores...

My gods upon starting a new fortress, your dwarves would have starved to death and have rotted away into a piles of bones before you can even pause the game!

Of course that's why there's a FPS cap in the init settings, but still... that would be awesome.

Still, running on one core means I can do other stuff while DF is running, and not totally slow my computer to a crawl.

I dunno about the Brandi thing (Brandi being my ex; I don't recall mentioning her name). I can see where she's coming from and everything, but I thought it said a lot that I was willing to try religion for her. I dunno. I don't think she cared about me the same ways I cared about her, so it's probably for the best. Just a little down for the time being, as can be expected. I'm alright, though.

The day after we broke up, though, we spent all class period talking about the importance of relationships and the dangers of loneliness among young adults (my age-ish), in one of my classes. I was like... Really?

    • wizardmon5

Sorry, just got to this comment.

I'm guessing it's her being devout vs you not really caring that much. If that's the case, then maybe if she means something to you, you should tag along for the ride. What's the worst that could come of it?

That is exactly what it was about. And in all honesty, I've always intended to attempt religion. Like, I'm not rejecting it (and I'm by no means an atheist; I consider myself loosely a deist, if that means anything to you), I just genuinely don't know much about it. I've never read any part of the bible, I haven't gone to church in over a decade, and... Yeah.

So when we had our talk about the situation, that was my hope, and my request; that she help me along the way to becoming, y'know, a 'good Christian'. But her response was that she just didn't feel comfortable dating someone who didn't believe the same things as her, and she didn't want me to feel forced into it or anything, so she wanted to put 'us' on hold (AKA, break up), but she's willing to help me along the way. And if in the future I see the light, so to speak (these are my words, not hers, to clarify), we could still end up together.

...Long story short? I'm single again. But I do intend to attempt the religion thing, and I would love for us to get back together. I still care for her, and just want her to be happy, and I recognize that she wouldn't be, if she were with me, right now. So fortunately we're still friends and all that.

Had you read Watchmen prior to seeing the movie? I thought it was really more of a fanservice for people who read the comic (since the guy almost scene for scene remakes the key parts of the story) than it is a right and proper piece of cinema. That said, I had one friend who hadn't heard of Watchmen before we went and saw the movie and he liked it, so maybe I'm wrong there.

I had not. And yeah, I heard it was basically an exact copy of the comic. Which is well and good in its way. But it didn't make for a good movie, and the previews lead me to believe there would be far more action than there was. I don't like being mislead.

Also, however bad your RE5 counterpart is, she can't be worse than Ashley from RE4 (except maybe when she's wearing that invincible suit of armor).

I contend that she is. Ashley was useless, but Sheva actually wastes ammo. You really can't afford that.

It is very different than The Birds.

Hey, I've dealt with the smell for this long, why would I let it bother me now?

Read my new journal to find out exactly what's been up. Well, what's in my journal and some other things, like trying to hang out with people around here as much as possible because two of the three people I regularly hang out with are also leaving - but they're going much farther than my 30-minute drive. One is going to Brookings, South Dakota (a three-hour drive), and the other is going to France (a very wet drive). Fortunately the third member of my ring of friends is staying right here, so he'll still be around.

So going back to college will be weird. I've greatly missed everyone all summer, so I'll be happy to see all of them. But I won't see two of my closest friends here for a LONG time. The one going to France might actually not be back until January, 2010. That is lame.

So how have YOU been? I see you've been New Yorking it up. Having fun?

Vowels are $50 each. I owe Pat $400.

Psh, what is this bed you speak of? I haven't gotten near enough sleep, in the past three or four days. The only side-effect is constant yawning and occasional homocidal tendancies. But, y'know, no more than usual. smiley1.gif

But yeah, I got off work tonight and went over to a friend's at 9:30 to tell her about my Omaha trip, and then she shared pictures/stories from her trip to Africa (she spent six months over there), then we frosted cupcakes she'd made while discussing the present, and suddenly it's 2 AM! Then I decided to come here and try to keep my promise to keep up with everyone's journals.
