      Gun control, emotions, and morality

I know this journal is going to be unpopular but as anyone can see, I am a supporter of 2nd amendment rights as well as an owner of a variety of firearms, all 100% legal. I collect them as a hobby, hunt with them, and I take my friends and family out to target practice. I've been shooting with careful adult supervision since I was three. As an adult myself now, I have never committed a crime with my guns, have never shot anyone on purpose or accident, nor have I allowed anyone shooting my guns to do anything unsafe with them. I am committed to firearm safety. Please, regardless of your opinion on the matter of gun control, please read this with an open mind. Genuine honest discussion is what this country needs right now. Not people tearing their fellow countrymen down simply for disagreeing.

My sympathies go out to the families and friends of those who lost loved ones in Newtown.

Human life is precious. Once a life is taken, the act cannot be undone. It is final. I believe this to be the case in many areas (which strays into other topics I shall avoid for the moment). Firearms are merely a tool in the hands of their wielder. Good people can do great things with them. They can be used to bring a father and son together through a common hobby such as hunting, competitive shooting, provide peace of mind for their family, or simply back yard plinking. Bad people can do horrendous things with them. Murder is the first thing that comes to mind for many people. The issue here isn't the gun though. Bad people are bad. Simple as that. They will do bad things no matter what. They have no regard for the law or for the well being of others. They will cause harm to other people regardless of the means they must use to accomplish it. There are also mentally ill people who unfortunately do not get the medical attention they need. Most mentally ill people are not violent. On occasion though some are and again, there is nothing preventative to stop a violent broken mind from completing their misguided mission of causing harm.

Part of the issue I see if the devaluation of human life. Video games and movies have ratings for a reason. Parents need to follow them. You see constantly where parents have bought their children violent games or taken them to violent movies. Children are impressionable. That is why those game and movie ratings exist. To shield young impressionable minds from situations and content that could be adverse. Children should not be allowed to play violent games like Call of Duty or watch violent R rated movies. Parents need to quit being "Mom the best friend" and actually do what's right for their child regardless of the child's desires. It is not in your child's best interests to allow them to interactively take part in violent content! Its a fact. Teach your child the value of a human life. Make sure they know at an early age that once a life is taken, it is gone forever. People who truly value another person's life cannot take that life. Those school children in Connecticut didn't deserve to be gunned down. The broken mind that went after them armed with a gun didn't value them for whatever reason. He didn't care that those precious young lives would be lost forever or those of the brave teachers who sacrificed themselves to save their students. They are true heros. Victoria Soto understood the value of the lives of her students and did the right thing knowing full well the cost. She is a real hero.

We have been down the assault weapon ban in the past. We have banned the import of such weapons since 1989. To this day all semi-automatic military style arms sold to US citizens must be produced in the US however foreign parts kits are legal to be assembled here with a certain percentage of their parts being produced here. In any case, that cut down drastically on the volume of assault weapons on the market in the US. Since then, there has been a 1994 assault weapons ban which prevented the sale of any rifle with the features of a military grade firearm. No bayonet lug, no pistol grip, no flash hider, and no grenade launcher which is not applicable to civilians anyways. This 1994 ban saw absolutely no change in the amount of violent gun related crimes. In fact since this ban was repealed in 2004, violent gun crime has decreased.

It is a fact, there are those in power in this country who simply hate guns. Its understandable. Guns are popularized in violent movies and games, highlighted on the news when they are used by criminals, and as such are misunderstood by a large portion of people. Then after a tragedy like what has happened in Newtown, there is a lot of emotion surrounding the issue of gun control and I completely understand why. Its awful what happened. The last thing we need to do is crumple up the Constitution and trample on rights though. Statistic prove gun control doesn't reduce crime in general or murder specifically. We need to all step back from the emotions surrounding this tragedy and take a calm and reasonable approach to the issues at hand.

The issue of morality is at the forefront to me. We live in a society where violence is glorified and in large, children are allowed to witness this by their parents. The value of life itself is in question with issues like abortions. It is a life and it is important. We live in a society that accepts poor, non-violent behavior as "entertainment". Look at people like Lindsay Lohan, Charlie Sheen, and some of the garbage on reality TV these days. Where is the accountability and the shame? As a society we need to seriously reconsider our values.

I've hit the limit of what can fit in a journal... The rest of my thoughts are in the first comment.

      Sayonara Sig Sauer, Konnichiwa Kimber

So the Sig Sauer 1911 Scorpion I got was a total hunkajunk. Unreliable as hell, not impressively accurate. I coulda just had a bad one. Dunno that they're all junk but that one was awful. So I traded it on a Kimber Warrior. The Sig had a lot more features I liked than this Kimber BUT I've not seen a bad Kimber is a very, very long time. At the very least, the Kimber Warrior has a railed frame and is far more standardized than the Sig was so even if it does suck, I'll easily be able to build a custom gun from its slide and frame. Wish the Sig had worked out. Unfortunately it didn't measure up to the standard one expects of a modern 1911 so it got the boot. Anyways, here's some more gun porn!

      twins.jpg

      KW_right.jpg

The second picture shows it as I purchased it. The first picture shows it next to my full custom airsoft 1911 with the grips traded between the two. For those who didn't catch it, the black one is real steel and the silver one an airsoft replica. I included that picture just for reference since several people here have seen my airsoft Kimber (some in person and many in pictures) before.

      New 1911

I finally bought a 1911! Its been way too long coming but hopefully is well worth the wait. I had been trying to decide between a Kimber Warrior, a Springfield Armory Loaded Operator, and a Sig Sauer 1911 Scorpion. They all have a similar feature set and vary in price from ~$1100 to ~$1400. I've shot tons of series II Kimbers and have really been impressed with every one I've shot. They always seem to be a good value out of the box. Springfield is a brand that is very dear to me. I've been a long time fan of their M1As which I own one of. Their reputation for factory 1911s is extremely high. Sig Sauer is one of those brands that people have come to know and trust with their P-Series handguns and 55x series rifles. They are in my opinion at least the underdog when it comes to 1911s and I wanted to hold one in my hands before settling on it. With Sig being the underdog in the 1911 market, the Scorpion is the lowest priced of the pistols I was considering as well as the most feature rich.

There's a gun shop in Atwood which is about 30 miles north of me that listed a Sig 1911 Scorpion in stock on their website. So I drove up to take a look at it. I was immediately impressed with the quality of the Cerakote finish on the firearm. It was as if the stainless steel frame and slide were naturally that color. The Cerakoting is done inside and out on the frame and slide and Sig offers a full lifetime warranty on the coating offering to re-coat it at any time should it wear. To me it seemed like Sig was trying to prove themselves with this gun. Its tolerances are very tight, I'd say easily equal to that of the Kimber. It came with night sights installed as well G10 grips and back strap that both work together to form a very convenient mag well to speed up reloads. It is able to use standard 7 round mags but came with 2x 8 round stainless steel mags with polymer floor plates. Its got a threaded barrel which is rifled clear to the end making it more of a 5.5 inch 1911 rather than the standard 5 inch. I doubt I'll ever put a silencer on it but its nice to have the option. And finally, its got a railed frame and its not like that retard Glock style rail. Its an actual 1913 rail. I could put any standard optic, vertical grip, laser, flash light, etc down there. I think I'll just settle for a flash light since anything else would be stupid! Anyways, enough babble from me. Here's a pic:

      Finally!!!

So here it is, my mostly finished airsoft version of the historic HK11E general purpose medium machine gun. Its taken me a long time but its finally done. Its the first airsoft gun I've ever built from scratch. The parts are mostly G&G, actual HK or something I built myself. Parts that I've either built or modified include, reinforcing the receiver, modifying an airsoft G3 backplate to accept a real steel Heckler and Koch stock, and a custom proper length 450mm bull style outer barrel. I still need to finish up making a 1200m HK diopter sight but it is to spec to use a standard drum style HK diopter as well. Anyways, all the fabrication work is finally done on this gun. I just have a handful of loose ends to tie up and it'll be 100% ready to field (assuming it shoots lol). I've spent a lotta time on this build making sure everything is as close to proper HK specs as is humanly possibly. The only thing this gun is lacking to be 100% to HK11E specs is a barrel shroud which you can see here is a $2800 part and simply isn't feasible. Not to mention if I did get the proper shroud, I'd still have to chop it up to make it fit an airsoft gun anyways and I'm not going to do that. I may build one someday but it is as faithful a recreation as is possible without spending a few grand on the build. Anyways, enough babbling. Here's some pics:

      Life and stuff

Well, this last weekend sucked balls. I spent all of Saturday and Sunday moving/arranging junk into my apartment. A bunch of big heavy ass desks, 5 in total, a love seat, and a washer and dryer. It sure is nice to actually be able to do laundry without having to go to a laundromat though. So anyways, I've got a lotta organizing stuff to do yet.

So airsoft stuff... I have been doing a lotta work on my EBR build. Its starting to really come together. There is mostly just some finishing metal work left on it, tweaking the FPS down to a reasonable level, painting a few last parts. I had a custom thread adapter made that converts the castle nut thread (thread that holds on the front sight and flash hider assembly) to 14mm- so I can attach standard mock silencers. I then had to modify an Angel Custom SEI Vortex style flash hider. It has designed to slide over the end of a barrel before threading (Tokyo Marui M14 style) so I had to lop off the rear portion of the flash hider to get it to thread on my adapter. Then it was too thick to fit inside the quick detach G&P M14 mock silencer. So I had to sand it down and then still had to smash the crap outta it with a 16 oz. ball peen until it slid in far enough to latch properly. So finally I got the parts all to work together so my G&G M14 EBR has a silencer which in itself is a rarity and cannot be done without machining parts. Anyways, the gun is 55 inches long now with the stock set to my preference when I'm not wearing body armor. Here's a pic of it mocked up in the EBR stock:

      M14EBRsilencer.jpg?t=1342403186

Also an exploded version with the full length barrel next to the silencer for size comparison

      M14EBRexploded.jpg

Building the internals was another challenge. G&G M14s use a proprietary cylinder head which is a standard bore. A full length cylinder on it is quite sufficient for a standard 509mm tight bore which is what's included in a full length M14 from G&G. In order to run a 715mm tight bore, I needed a bore up kit. Seeing as how G&G doesn't use a standard cylinder head and doesn't produce their own bore up kit, I was forced to build my own. The M14 cylinder head is based on a heavily modified P90 cylinder head. It has a longer air nozzle stem and is slightly shorter in over all length on the actual cylinder head itself and uses an air nozzle for an AUG. Well, getting the bore up AUG air nozzle isn't a trick. I managed to find a Modify bore up cylinder head for a P90. I had to have it special ordered from Hong Kong as they were the only place I could find anywhere that even could order one. So yesterday (7/16/2012) I finally received the P90 bore up parts and went to the machine shop to get them modified to fit the G&G M14's gearbox. Here's the results (still rough after machining). The grey one is a G&G M14 stainless cylinder head (non bore up) and the red anodized one is the Modify P90 bore up one:

      cylheads.jpg

So the gun is fully functioning now. It's running a Lonex 715mm tight bore, Modify torque up gears, a modified Modify P90 bore up cylinder head, Modify bore up piston and full bore up cylinder, PDI 185 spring (which is gonna get downgraded for FPS reasons) a Lonex CA M14 hop up, Madbull 65° bucking, PCS concave spacer, and some other stuff I'm probably forgetting... Anyways, Its shooting between 398 and 401 fps with Matrix .25s (about 447 fps with .2s) which is a bit hotter than I wanted. I'm going to bump it down to an M110 spring and see if I can't get it down to 420 fps with .2s just so its full auto legal.

      Three months in...

So I've been working here at the hospital for three months now... Its going well I suppose. There's some management issues... Mostly a complete lack of it in our department. Oh well... IT is a fairly autonomous job anyways. If you're not a self starter in this line of work, you don't last long.

I'm all moved in my apartment. Still need to get a washer and drier... Its nice having my some space to myself. I do wish I actually owned it and had a garage. I really wanna get some tools so I can work on stuff easier and maybe even a hobby sized mill so I can actually build some parts on my own for airsoft and other projects.

Speaking of airsoft, for those that haven't seen, I'm working on quite possibly the most absurd airsoft build ever. Its based on yet another G&G M14 just this time the full barreled EBR model. I'm shooting for a 715mm tight bore barrel which itself is almost the length of an M4A1 with the stock collapsed. Anyways, this gun will end up being around 60 inches long and will likely weigh somewhere over 15 pounds. I'm having a custom thread adapter built to allow me to attach a silencer over where the castle nut normally secures the front sight assembly to the end of the barrel. I'm also going to have to heavily modify the flash hider to attach the silencer and then build a one off bore up kit as the G&G M14 uses a proprietary cylinder head and NOBODY on earth makes a bore up kit for one. Assuming I can get all this fabrication done, it should be one of the most spectacular airsoft DMRs ever built. I'll post an update on it once I get more work done on it. Hopefully it'll be soon :) Here's a pic to hold people over until its done.

      Got a job!

Hey everyone... I finally got a job. Its more hospital IT computer geek work. Not sure yet exactly when I'll start but hopefully very soon. I've gotta get housing lined up first then there will be the ever lovely piss test, TB skin test, physical-ish thing where you lift a bunch of stupid boxes to prove you aren't broken, paperwork and orientation. Oh... and moving. Yuck. Anyways, I'll probably post another journal later once I get moved into where ever I move to and get started working.

      Another airsoft build

I've got an airsoft AK-47 I built some time ago that's been one of my staple guns. In its most recent form it sports over 45 rounds per second at 428 fps using a mixture of Modify, Guarder,Systema, and some custom machined parts in the gear box and a 650mm Prometheus tight bore barrel. Needless to say, its epic. So recently I've been seeing some AKs with perforated metal heat shrouds over the gas tube. Kinda thought it would be a cool look for my airsoft AK and decided this evening to start building one from scratch. Its a fairly simple piece to build but using as common of tools as I could find along with making it from salvaged sheet steel from an old PC power supply, I set out to build one in a similar manner to how a middle eastern terrorist would build one for his real steel counterpart. So after cutting myself a few times on unfinished metal, here's the results thus far:

      IMG_0845.jpg

      IMG_0846.jpg

Still got some work to do to finish fitting it properly then sand, prime and paint it to have a decent finish. I'll post some more pics later when its complete. Also, sorry the pics blow. The only camera I have at the moment is an iPod.

      Venting

PREFACE: I'm going to apologize ahead of time for the wall of text but this needs to be said. It is not pointed at any one in particular but at a whole society and culture. If you are offended by anything I have said in this post, you are a piece of shit and you seriously need to reconsider some things.

Online gaming is being ruined and our society as well as game developers seem to find it acceptable. The amount of modding, cheating, and general assholery in online multiplayer is just out of hand. I've been a Call Of Duty fan for a very long time. I had vowed never to buy Black Ops because of how horrible COD multiplayer had become and bought it eventually anyways to play with a friend before he went off to Marine boot camp. It was so horrible. The game devs had put so much illegitimate garbage in the game like dual wielding shotguns and SMGs, remote control C4 cars, all these ridiculous perks, and massively overpowered weapons that the game was nearly unplayable. Battlefield has long been the anti-COD. Bad Company 2 was in my opinion one of the greatest games ever as far as online multiplayer goes. No prone so no drop shotting, with the exception of the AS VAL, all the weapons were well balanced as were the classes. Now in Battlefield 3, much of what was good about Battlefield is gone and it has become nothing more than another COD wannabe. Real life garbage weapons like the FAMAS and F2000 are massively overpowered because some armchair warrior game programmer likes them better, USAS-12 with frags is beyond insanely overpowered despite the fact that the game claims frags are the weakest shotgun round, and despite the game being a FIRST PERSON SHOOTER, I get blown up more than I get shot.

      cod.gif
^^ this doesn't make you good. It makes you a retard and its because of people like this that I refuse to purchase any more COD games.

Now to the part that really chaps my ass. PEOPLE... There is so much modding, IE aim modding, health modding, wall hacking, etc. It's uncalled for and it ruins gameplay for everyone else. Part of the point of multiplayer is to pit skill vs skill on an even playing ground and let the best gamer come out on top. If you cannot handle this concept, don't play. Its simple. Don't ruin something for someone else because you are a miserable shit that cannot come to grips with the fact that you suck. Also, things like riding a MAV out of the map or any other in game exploit is CHEATING and is wrong. Just because you can do something doesn't mean that its right or that you should do it. I personally report every single person, even team mates, who I see using any in game exploit. Another point, using overpowered weapons like the FAMAS in BF3 or the USAS-12 frag is illegitimate and talentless. Just because you can get 38 stars with one doesn't mean you are good or skilled. It means that you can unfairly take advantage of poor game balancing and you have no life outside of being a bitch online. Furthermore, NO ONE is entitled to cheat. "r u mad bro" is not funny or cute and certainly nobody likes you for thinking this way. Ruining a game which other people enjoy because you are an insecure little douchebag does not make you cool or make anyone like you more. I find it amazing that grown people can find it so amusing to be a dick on the internet to cover their own insecurities. Society is broken if people think this behavior is acceptable. Things need to change badly. Gaming should be an enjoyable activity. I game with my friends because we have fun doing it. Modding, cheating, and generally being a dick because you can isn't fun. Its a sign of a miserable existence and calls for some introspection.

Anyways, I'm done venting. Hope some people agree. I'm personally getting tired of turning on my xbox only to get douche bagged to death repeatedly and getting angry instead of having a good time gaming with my friends. That's the point I want to get across.

Okay, so I looked at the current new specs for all the rebalancing of BS's and Navy BC's. The abbadon is going to get nerfed by 1% resistances to all levels and that's the only change. Though they are changing the large energy turrets to have -10% cap need for large pulses, -20% cap need for large beams, and -10% powergrid need for large beams. Additionally, the Armageddon is turning into a giant drone boat, losing 2 turrets and gaining 5 launcher points (and losing 1 high and 1 low slots while gaining 1 mid). Though I saw the stats for the Navy Drake and it is Bitchin! It's going to be epic along with the new Brutix, and the new Hurricane got a slight boost so it will be pretty good too. The Harbinger is going to suffer the most by a lot.

Well, kinda the thing with tiericide is all the battleships are being brought to a middle ground. The Abaddon is being made slightly worse (but large lasers better) and the rest of the BSs are being brought up to match it. I think there's several ships that are going to be hurt like the Dominix and Armageddon (damage wise). The navy harb I think will still be good but its going to be pvp focused and will require a cap booster. that's why its gaining the med slot. I expect BS wise though, the best BSs post balance will be the hyperion and possibly the flying trash can (typhoon)
