I would really like Doyle to have written the RvB13 trailer message from “Epsilon,” as a final act to keep technology out of Hargrove’s clutches and protect the people who had helped him.

First off, he had the capability. He was the secretary to the brigadier before this started, which implies he had some seriously good organizational skills. In fact, given Epsilon’s recent failures, I think Doyle would have been more capable than Epsilon of compiling all the information available on Hargrove’s activities to send off to someone else.

Secondly, he had the offscreen time in which to draft the message and compile the data: when he ran off to his quarters to think about his failures at the end of Episode 12. He seemed much calmer after that, almost as if he’d gotten something in order. Hmm.

      Let’s look at the text:

“My name is Epsilon. Sometimes called Alpha, sometimes Church. You, of course, already know that, because if you are hearing this message, that means you must be heading the investigation of the incident on the planet Chorus.”

The intro is very specific, excessively detailed, as if someone was reading Ep’s various names from a file and adding AKAs as they read. The correction following that, independent of Burnie’s read, seems nervous, like a person who’s bad at lying and wants to make sure the reader is buying it. (Both of these points, especially the latter, have made me suspicious in the past that the trailer message wasn’t written by Epsilon.)

Specific detail and nervous corrections are very Doyleish, as is the self-deprecating use of “maudlin” and “overdramatic” later in the message (which also never struck me as particularly Epsilon-like).

“[The people of Chorus] were unique individuals. I fought both beside them, and against them, and…against them when I was supposed to be beside them.”

These statements are general, and one could argue that they fit just about any of the characters (especially with the Red vs. Blue and Fed vs. New parallels), but the sentence preceding this one refers directly to “the men and women who fought bravely on Chorus,” which makes me think it fits Doyle better than Epsilon. Epsilon joined pretty late in the conflict; Doyle fought a whole war on Chorus.

And what does the message say about these people?

      That they fought bravely.

Among the myriad things that went wrong in the fight against Sharkface was that Epsilon didn't seem to realize how bad off he was. "That's a lot for me to handle' does not exactly express "I'm actually going to crash if I try to do that, so I can't,' and Epsilon seems genuinely confused and concerned when Delta and Theta glitch out.

It appears that Epsilon really thought he could do it if he worked hard enough. And while this is the story of the Churches again and again, this time around it also seemed like Epsilon wasn't even getting warning signals that he was falling apart at the seams.

I think the problem is that, in essence, Epsilon wasn't being himself.

The way Epsilon compartmentalizes his personalities, he puts so much processor power or conscious thought (or however you want to conceptualize it) into being "Church' that all of the other personality emulations basically get grunt calculation tasks: Theta does physics stuff, Delta does prioritizing and probabilities, Gamma keeps track of time, Eta and Iota do...hacky things?...and Sigma and Omega stay out of sight.

Furthermore, he only brings up these other personalities when he needs them...even when they might have important things to say, like "It's too much!'

It wasn't always this way. When we first met Epsilon outside of flashes and hums, he appeared as Delta to Caboose. He thought Caboose would be most comfortable that way. He also referred to himself as "we.' It wasn't until Caboose put Epsilon into the Monitor that Epsilon decided to unify under the "Alpha Church' personality. And once he did that...maybe he only did it more and more, until he forgot what it was like to be Epsilon.

When we see Epsilon now, he's trying to be the Church personality over and above giving conscious consideration to his other personalities as parts of himself. They're just tools, apps he pulls out when he needs calculations done and ignores when he "doesn't need' them. But he does need them. They're him.

It's like he didn't realize he was hurting because he blocked off the part of himself that feels pain.

I think that part of the healing process for Epsilon will involve becoming more "Epsilon' and less "Church'--perhaps reforming himself into more of a collective in which all parts communicate and are used to their fullest potential, and less an unaware "Church' with apps.

It might be that the "story of how Church died' this season will be the metaphorical "death' of Epsilon's dedicated presentation as Church. A healthier, less-failing Epsilon in the future might appear most of the time as Church, but other times as Delta, or Theta, or even Sigma or Omega, depending on what is most efficient and necessary.

That is, in order to heal, Epsilon may need to remember who he really is, and what it means to be that AI.

      Memory may be the key.

    • How They'll Get Out of This One

      DaftProdigy Tinfoil Hatter

(Note: Heavy spoilers for the latest episode of RvB.)

The ingredients of our recipe today are the temple of weather manipulation, a few armor enhancements, and a dash of callback.

But first, a bit of context:

This season's True Warrior storyline is strongly paralleling the Great Destroyer storyline (also known as "Scenario Three') from the Blood Gulch Chronicles. This scenario involved (among other things) the Reds and Blues meeting a Sangheili that they named Crunchbite, and Tucker finding the sword-key and taking it to a temple, where it revealed a Banshee that Crunchbite used to try to get off the planet.

And the scenario started when two of Sarge's inventions interacted: when a weather machine he put in one robot (Lopez)...

      tumblr_inline_npme9llP6f1sfinob_540.png

..and a bomb he put in another robot (Church's robot body) were both activated. Supposedly, the subsequent explosion blew most of the team into the future, and blew Church into the past.

It was just a sim soldier scenario. It didn't actually happen.

      But what if it could?

Which brings me to our current season. Things are going badly: General Doyle is mired in indecision as an unexpected contingent of space pirates overwhelms Kimball's team and Sharkface pins down Carolina's team so that he can get to the Purge.

They're going to lose, and most of them are going to die. (Miles has to live up to the George R. R. Martin reputation he's garnered somehow.) It will be heartwrenching: Freckles will be unable to save Caboose, Grif and Simmons will profess their love before getting shot, Doctor Grey will sacrifice herself so that Tucker and Carolina can get away...

And Sharkface is going to get to the building containing the Purge.

Meanwhile, the five surviving main characters in the field:

      tumblr_inline_nplm88BMf21sfinob_540.png

will regroup at the closest temple: The temple of weather manipulation.

They'll wonder what they can possibly do with the technology at this temple, and Tucker will comment in frustration that the only thing weather manipulation is good for is fake time travel. Cue a recap of the intro to Scenario Three.

The thing is, Sarge now has ten more years of machine-building experience, an actual huge weather manipulation machine, and an AI who can run calculations for him. They can actually do it this time. They can go back in time and get to the Purge before Sharkface does.

      They can save Chorus.

      With time travel.

Carolina will offer her armor enhancements to rig up as a bomb, and using the weather machine to overload them should do the trick. They'll even face the "proper direction' for the explosion to take them back. Only, Epsilon is failing and he'll do the calculations wrong. Instead of getting thrown back a day or so into the past, they'll get thrown back...1,856 years, just like Church supposedly was in Scenario Three.

      tumblr_nmsbsuUHck1tbb76go1_500.png

Now, on a planet full of old-timey Sangheili building their temples (who, I like to imagine, might be involved in some Red versus Blue battles themselves), our five heroes will have to teach the inhabitants of Chorus about the Great Prophecy, thereby creating the alien lore and technology that Project Freelancer will scoop for Scenario Three, which will give Tucker the sword-key and teach the Reds and Blues about the Great Prophecy...

And if shaping history isn't a delicate enough business already, they'll have to do it while being tracked by a person in a particular suit of armor that contains a particular time distortion unit.

      tumblr_inline_npls4wJEAa1sfinob_540.png

And then somehow return to a point slightly before their own time to stop the space pirates and the Purge.

      Welp.

      DaftProdigy Tinfoil Hatter

--Locus, Sponsor Cut, Journal Entry 004

For those who can't view the video, the quoted line is really the only part I'll be focusing on, but it's also important to note, I think, that although this video is captioned as being an "audio journal," we're really watching Locus write the thing, rather than speak it.

For a long time I thought that was just because Locus thought it would be more dramatic to be silent, but this latest episode has gotten me thinking about what Locus wants, and how that might not be what Felix wants. And now, to me, it seems almost as if there was someone nearby, and Locus didn't want to be overheard recording speculation over whether or not he could have been a Freelancer. I wonder who that someone would have been...

Was Locus concerned that Felix would have seen this as an exploitable weakness? That expressing a desire to be a part of something larger--a Freelancer--instead of merely Hargrove's "weapon" would signal faltering loyalties?

What if Hargrove has read those logs and Felix hasn't? What if the Counselor has read those logs and Felix hasn't?

What if this whole stunt with showing Locus and Felix Maine's armor wasn't to tempt them with pure firepower, or to give Locus the chance to fully assume his role as A Weapon (as seems most directly implied by Felix's comment)? What if, instead, it was to tempt Locus with the chance to become a "Freelancer"? To finally take on a role that is more than a weapon?

If so, then whoever had this idea (Hargrove, or, in my favored theories, the Counselor "advising" Hargrove) is really trying to get Locus to make a play for his own agency: to discard the "weapon" self-concept and the person most directly tied to its maintenance, to assume a new role as a Freelancer...and, in doing so, to remove a wild-card element whose flaws keep inviting failure.

Will Locus kill Felix for Maine's armor?

And if he does...will the Counselor and Hargrove still be able to control him?

So, Tucker killed a red Sangheili to activate the temple...

      tumblr_inline_nnst8djQTt1sfinob_540.gif

which gave him a blue map leading to a point on Chorus.

      tumblr_inline_nnst8gvtiZ1sfinob_540.png

A pulse from the temple shut down the tractor beam tower this episode, which then produced a red map leading to the same point.

      tumblr_inline_nnst90xu4q1sfinob_540.png

I'm not saying these towers dotted around Chorus must have been Red and Blue Bases...

And I'm not saying that Tucker must have accidentally sent out the Blue-Sangheili equivalent of "MEET ME IN THE PIT, RED TEAM"...

...but what if they were and he did?

    • About That Robot Arm...

      DaftProdigy Tinfoil Hatter

I bet that when Doc shows up again he'll be missing an arm, and he'll be Sarge and Grey's test subject.

Because if we're calling back to Season 3, then Doc's gotta get a little robot arm-y...

And to go beyond the pun and into references:

Doc dealing with his repressed aggression is definitely a Season 3 theme. And we don't have Omega around anymore to let it out...but we could have the robot arm.

Perhaps a robot arm that, thanks to its being a prototype, uses the PFL neural implant to link in to something a bit less consciously-controlled than its new owner would like.

I mean, we've already got one Dr. Strangelove reference in the show (fighting in the War Room), so why not two?

Addressing the issue of "bullets" in RvB and Freelancer armor, I think it's more consistent than you guys made it out to be.

      - North was shot by a CHAIN GUN which broke through strong steel plating. And his amor stopped the bullets enough for him to act in Chapter 4.
      - Meta was ripped into by Wash with a Turret, but he had an Overshield. Yes there was blood shown but that may have either been after it failed, or more likely they would have shown it if Meta didn't have to change colours, which couldn't have been done in the shot if Meta had an overshield effect. I gathered the fact Meta's camouflage failed was meant to show he was diverting power to keep his Overshield up. That's also why he was so effective at wasting the PFL troops in Chapter 18, and they very clearly showed the Overshield effect in 19 during the quick cuts.
      - Meta got shot in the Spiral chase, but first he was shot by a Sniper Rifle, probably powerful enough to get through his armor without energy shielding. And he had no strong armor covering his neck, it was his "Zero-suit" as dubbed by Monty.
      - Basically ignoring anything taking place in BGC, controlled environment, (and I have my own idea about why Freelancers could die there, as crackpot as it is) the only people who have survived shots have had Overshields. No one's been shot by a pistol who wasn't a Simulation trooper, and the only wounds for Freelancers have come from high powered weapons. It's highly possible the armor they normally wear is just shit Project Freelancer got from cosplay shops online.

Yeah, I think I maxed out the character-count for a comment... -_-' sorry, I'm stressed.

You know, you can hide your online status, I often do this is I want to check the site now and then but am too busy to get into conversations, then people don't think that you're "screening them" or whatever the term is.

Well I've had people break friends with me over less -- something starts out as a small thing and then turns into a huge argument and then the next thing you know that person has emigrated... but yeah, sorry.

Gah! When on Earth do you sleep, girl? Good luck with the assignments, I'm sure you'll do fine smiley1.gif

People always assume that if you're online but not talking to them that you must be mad at them. This is why I log out of the site when I so much as need to pee. Considering you did seem to be highly annoyed at me and you were shown as being online, I was assuming for the first couple of hours that you weren't replying to the first comment I left because you didn't want to talk about it anymore because you were annoyed so I was trying to change the subject in the hopes that I could repair the situation before it got irreparable. I am not very good at social situations at the best of times and it is very hard to read someone's emotions over the internet. And you should really have your phone turned off in class.

      RvB Season 9:
Well, the whole concept of Red vs. Blue has always been that the characters are fighting but don't know why -- Project Freelancer seems to be just as much about this as Red vs Blue is, they're just following orders on the vague notion that they're the good guys and the other guys are the bad guys and not really thinking too much about it. Presumably, just as the reason why the Reds and Blues are fighting is explained later to be a training exercise, we'll eventually be told what the insurrection is about, or if there really is an insurrection or if the Director is using that as an excuse for stealing stuff.
I do remember there being some kind of rebellion of sorts in the original Halo storyline though, before the Covenant started attacking human colonies, back when the Spartan program was first commissioned, that was never really explained fully either.

As for the epsi-pod stuff... none of that makes any sense to me. I realise that the reason the characters are lacking in depth is that they are really just Church's memories or mental projections of those people, just like in "Inception", but that also begs the question of how he knows so much about all of them...
I guess the reason that he's found Tex but not left yet is twofold: firstly, he doesn't actually know how to get out, secondly he isn't sure if she's the real Tex or his mental projection of Tex.

But yeah, overall I agree with you that this season is severely lacking in substance, I have had a lot of trouble engaging with the story, and I haven't laughed once. Well, except a little at some of Caboose's lines, but I used to laugh a lot more.

      Doctor Who:
Yeah, I enjoyed it for the most part, I just felt like it's been a lot more based on "if you believe it you can make it happen" for the second half at least.
Well, we knew the Doctor wasn't going to die. I did think the last episode was a bit over the top though with the whole of time unravelling just because one thing doesn't happen. I also miss the time-eating bats that used to appear when time was changed, they haven't appeared since the Ninth Doctor.

Still, I'm looking forward to the next series, there's still a lot to see.

Speaking of old Doctors, have you seen this? (Wait for it)

      Scrapping Red Lion:
I stand by my decision. In my opinion plenty of ideas that actually got made should have been scrapped and then started over, like the script for the third X-Men, Spider-Man and Rush Hour films, Batman The Dark Knight and 2009's Star Trek, or the entire concept for the comicbook Squirrel Girl, and who's that one from DC comics who combines animals into weird mutants? That's more like a villain's power. Some ideas really are bad ideas, and some are badly executed and need to be started over and made into a good idea, but it requires good ideas in the first place to build from.

Just because I've scrapped the character in the form that I had imagined at that time that doesn't mean I won't go back to the character when I have a better idea. My working process is: if the original idea is fundamentally flawed, scrap it, then if you have a better idea later, go back to it and start again from scratch, because sometimes it's easier to start from scratch with a stronger foundation, otherwise you just keep making changes to try to make something work and end up hating it because it's nothing like what you originally envisaged -- which is why I scrapped the idea for that sci-fi comic, I ended up changing all the characters and setting so much by the end that I didn't know them well enough to write a story about them anymore, but that doesn't necessarily mean that I'll never go back to it, it just won't be until I have a better idea that I think can make it work, and I can't force that, I just have to wait for it to happen naturally.

I scrapped Urban Dragons earlier in the year because the storyline I was working with didn't hold much potential for character development, humour or anything interesting happening at all, but then I went back to it later when I had a better idea and re-wrote it from the beginning -- I'm currently working on that revised storyline and when I have fleshed it out a bit more I would appreciate your feedback on it so I can make it better, and that one I won't be scrapping based on one hole because I know that I can make it work in some form, even if I have to make some minor changes.

I also recycle characters from stuff I've scrapped into new stuff all the time -- Nadine and Owen, who appear in Urban Dragons as humans, were originally characters from a book idea I was working on called "Chronicles of the Modern Dragons", so Liam and Andrew may live on in some form in something else, or even as comicbook characters in a comic within another comicbook universe I create, like the Crimson Chin in Fairly Odd Parents.

Point being, I'm sorry if I gave the wrong impression and I'm sorry for upsetting you, I know you weren't trying to tear apart the idea, that was all me, I really am my worst critic. don't get so annoyed at me for being me, this is just how I work, and don't get so annoyed at yourself either, because I know you do, some ideas are just bad idea.

What about Doctor Who? You up to date with Doctor Who? This season's been a bit sentimental, I feel, but it's nice to see the Doctor's going to start laying low instead of doing big flashy stuff now, hopefully that means a return to the old Doctor Who tradition of doing good but staying under the raydar.

So what do you think of the new series so far? I think it's been a bit lacking in humour. The action scenes have been good though, although I feel that the CG isn't that great compared with least season. I wonder if on the DVD they'll have the option to just watch the Freelancer bits or just watch the Blood Gulch bits, that would be a nice feature, although I don't think I'll buy the DVD this season unless it has a really good ending, I might stave off until Burnie actually writes a proper "they all lived happily ever after" (or "they all died and went to hell" if you prefer) ending instead of just going around in circles. I'd hate to see RvB fizzle out like Quantum Leap or Sliders.

Why did I ask you to give feedback?
      - Because you're not going to just say "good idea", you'll actually highlight good and bad points and/or ask questions that make me consider the good and bad points.

Why did I scrap the character?
      - It had too many flaws in the initial concept to work as a viable superhero. It was something I came up with on a whim because I liked the idea of a big lion guy swooping in... or not swooping... what do lions do? like, pounce? pouncing in to save the day? I liked the mental image anyway, and the fact that I could make him a British superhero, and Britain is extremely lacking in super-types in comparison with America and even Canada.
Point being, it's something I came up with on a whim because I liked the idea, it's not like something I've spent years on, and I have other things I want to work on, so it's not that big of a deal if I scrap it.

Why did I delete the previous journal?
      - I had made my decision not to follow through with the concept, I deleted the journal as a symbol of this, and to effectively end any discussions pertaining to me continuing with the concept. or that was the idea anyway.

"Welp, that's a deal-breaker. Thanks anyway guys, but my ideas are horrible."
Sometimes ideas ARE bad ideas, you know. I wish someone had stopped and realised what a terrible idea it was to make Eddie Brock a whiny emo kid who's upset about his girlfriend dumping him in Spider-Man 3 instead of an experienced reporter with a genuine grudge as he is in the comics, for instance.

"Yeah, that idea sucked, I guess I'll go back to my corner now..."
What corner? I'm working on story-lines and artwork for other comic and story projects at the moment, it's not like I'm giving up on everything I'm working on because I had one bad idea for a character.

        Look at it this way:
You didnt' actually give feedback as such, you asked questions that lead me to give myself feedback, as it were, so really I scrapped the character based on my own feedback, and the only reason I seemed annoyed or defensive about anything would be me realising that I had created a fundamentally flawed character. This does not matter though, since really the character would just have been an excuse for me to draw a muscular anthropic lion dashing about the place, so it's really not worth bothering about.

    • DocRossim

I'm going in a minute but before I do:

I asked you to critique and leave feedback on the idea because you're good at identifying what's wrong with something, it's flaws, it's holes, etc. and asking questions that prompt others to look again and find those flaws and holes too. You're also fairly good at proposing creative solutions but that doesn't really matter at this point.
The question was: "Is this idea worth pursuing?" The answer was "No", don't worry about it. I have two other comic projects I'm working on and an ongoing illustrated story, I should really be focusing on them anyway.

    • DocRossim

I wish there was an "away" setting on Rooster Teeth, it would be so very useful.

Yes, if there was just a few holes in the character then I'd have found ways around them, but it was the fact that I couldn't think of answers to even basic questions you were asking that made me realise how superficial the idea was. Even the solutions I was coming up with seemed pretty flawed and unlikely to work in real life situations, so overall it was a bad idea. Strength and agility aren't actually that useful against bullets and knives, when you think about it, and being eight foot tall is a fundamental flaw if you need to rescue someone from a burning building with an average ceiling height of about six and a half feet.

No need. I see the fundamental flaw in this idea: your process. I ask a simple, broad-not-deep question and you detail-think yourself to death.

    • DocRossim

I'm not angry about that or anything, the purpose of the journal was just to see if the character seemed like a good idea or not, if it had any potential I'd just have to work out the bugs and try to think up a proper origin story, if there were too many flaws I'd scrap it.

    • DocRossim

Well, the more I thought about how to answer that question the more it seemed like a stupid idea. I realised that I'd just thought of a concept, gone "oh, that seems like a cool concept" and hadn't really given any consideration to the practicalities of being a superhero, therefore it was a bad idea without even any unique attributes that would set it apart from other superheroes apart from the character happening to turn into a humanoid lion instead of just wearing a costume. You made me realise that the character was fundamentally flawed and entirely superficial and just wouldn't work as a superhero in any given situation.

Wait... what about a warrior knight lion? Transformation including a medieval breastplate, sword and shield?
No, forget that, it's too clichéd, I'm just going to scrap it and move on.
