    • How To New Computer

      DaftProdigy Tinfoil Hatter

      1. Order a computer in early December from a PC-building website.

      2. Have PC-building company refuse to ship it to your address because it differs from the credit card's billing address. Ask to change the shipping address to the billing address.

      3. Wait a week. Hear nothing.

      4. Wait another week. Hear nothing.

      5. Cancel order. Curse the company and their horrible customer service. Order similar computer from a different PC-building website, making sure to match shipping and billing addresses this time.

      6. Wait for computer to be built and shipped to parents' house.

      7. Wait for computer-skilled parent, or available equivalent, to check the build, install software, and ship the computer to you.

      8. When step 7 is complete and you have received a tracking number, worry over the UPS tracking page as if the package were a diamond bottle full of unicorn tears. Repeat this step for a week.

      9. On the day the computer is to arrive at your apartment, stand vigil in the foyer all day. Do not move. Do not nap. You may read, but do not break your attention on the door for more than 3 minutes at a time.

      10. When it is late afternoon, realize you've been silly, leave a note for the delivery person, and go back into your apartment. If you do not have an apartment, re-enter the closest equivalent available.

      11. Wait a bit. Hear buzzer. Rush back out of your apartment (or close equivalent) and sign for the computer. Allow delivery person to carry in the box for you because HOLY CRAP IT IS THE BIGGEST BOX YOU HAVE SEEN FOR A COMPUTER EVER.

      12. Drag computer box clumsily into your room.

      13. Notice that some grit on the underside of the box mayyyy have scratched up the hardwood floor juuuuuusssst a little bit. Try very hard to un-notice. Note: rugs help.

      14. Turn air around you slightly blue as you attempt to remove heavy computer tower and styrofoam from its very tight fit in the box. Succeed when air has become a nice cerulean.

      15. Notice that a sharp back corner of the computer tower kind of sort of scratched up the floor as well when you dragged the tower out of the box. Don't even try to un-notice; this section of the floor gave you a half-inch splinter the other day, so it *totally* deserves it.

      16. Get told by computer-skilled parent that they put bubble wrap on the inside to protect components, and you'll need to remove the screws to the side panel to open the case and get it out.

      17. Unscrew the set of fans on the side by mistake, screw them back in, *then* notice the user-friendly screws on the side of the other panel. Loosen and remove side of case, and remove bubble wrap. Feel accomplished.

      18. Put everything back together and plug in ALL THE THINGS. Feel relief that both computer and monitor have HDMI ports, because that is the only cable you have.

      19. Realize HDMI connection between computer and monitor is not working.

      20. Try not to panic.

      21. Panic a little.

      22. Troubleshoot with computer-skilled parent and friend who gave you the monitor. (If you do not have a friend, troubleshoot with the closest equivalent available.)

      23. Give up.

      24. Cross out number 23. In frustration, examine computer ports one last time.

      25. Realize you plugged the HDMI cable into an unpowered extra port on the case. Headdesk until you have a mild concussion.

      26. Plug monitor into correct port. Of course it works now. Stupid thing.

      27. Congratulate yourself on your new computer!

Welp, didn't get an email for RTX Guardianship. Still going to the convention though :D

Hope to see many of you lovely people there, and congratulations to all this year's Guardians! ^______^

Well hello, little RTX lanyard image. We meet again.

"DaftProdigy, buy your ticket now!" you insist.

"Be patient, please," I reply. "I've applied to be a Guardian."

Maybe I'll make it there this year. **crosses fingers** :D

    • How To Exercise Bike

      DaftProdigy Tinfoil Hatter

      1. Make New Year's Resolution to get in better shape.

      2. Buy an exercise bike from Amazon. Wait 8 days for it to reach distribution facility nearby.

      3. Spend most of delivery day refreshing the tracking page on Amazon until the package is finally delivered to the foyer of your apartment.

      4. Find box in foyer of apartment. Say, "Holy crap, that is a big box.'

      5. Drag box to stairs. Accidentally lift 45-pound box using back muscles. Don't regret it. Carry box up stairs, lower box to open door to apartment. Lift box again with back. Still don't regret it.

      6. Shoo Kitty away from door. Carry box into mostly-unfurnished room-that-is-now-the-exercise-room. Lower using back.

      7. Regret everything you did to your back.

      8. Slice tape around box with key. Open box. Say "what the crap am I looking at' two or three times. Begin removing things from the box. Occasionally repeat phrase.

      9. Finish removing things from box. Say hello to Kitty who has come to watch your project. Read assembly instructions: "It is strongly recommended that two or more people assemble this machine to avoid possible injury.'

      10. Say, "No, I got this.'

      11. Unpackage everything. Close door so Kitty cannot get into what is quickly becoming a low-budget Roland Emmerich film set.

      12. Begin assembling bike. Realize there are typos in the instructions about which screws to use. Reassess Assembly Difficulty Level (ADL).

      13. Raise ADL to: IKEA storage unit.

      14. Continue assembling bike. Reach "this may need two people' tension cord connection. Say, "Oh, that doesn't look so hard.'

      15. Attempt to connect tension cord. Raise ADL to: IKEA Malm Bed.

      16. Attempt to connect tension cord.

      17. Attempt to connect tension cord.

      18. Release string of comically-mild invective.

      19. Look up help on Internet. Internet says: be persistent!

      20. Be persistent. Connect tension cord.

      21. Assemble bike frame and attach pedals. Expend more effort attaching plastic foot straps to pedals than you did when assembling the rest of the bike frame. The bike is complete.

      22. Open door to see Kitty waiting outside. Kitty acts like she hasn't seen you in three hours...which she hasn't.

      23. Congratulate yourself on a successful workout!

    • The Surely-Much-Awaited-By-Someone CAT JOURNAL

      DaftProdigy Tinfoil Hatter

In my last journal, I promised cat photos. Thus, CAT PHOTOS :D

(Apologies in advance for quality on several of the photos; my phone camera is a potato, and I don't usually have my nice camera on me around the apartment.)

This is Harper, my roommate's cat.
      kittylookingup.JPG

Harper is a tiny and adorable shorthair mix. She's been bumped around to a few different homes now--I have no clue why--but she has finally found a forever home with my roommate.
      557430_10151856131699224_709174929_n.jpg

She is a very affectionate cat. Every time I come home from work, I can hear meowing on the other side of the door as Harper eagerly waits for me to come in. She is usually sitting on the arm of the couch closest to the door, ready for cuddles. I'll sit down on the couch, and she'll hop up on it next to me expecting scritchies :D
      waitingforcuddles.JPG

She loves to be scratched under the chin:
      chinscratches.JPG

And on top of her head:
      IMG_1458.JPG

Sometimes, she will cuddle until she falls asleep. And she looks adorable when snoozing:
      1459725_10152079958154224_921872154_n.jp
      182325_10152121866214224_591056047_n.jpg

I credit this cat with keeping me stable during what was occasionally a lonely and stressful move-in. I also credit her with my suddenly beginning to ask inane questions like "Whoosa good kitty?" and "Whoosa cat?" which are invariably followed by "You are! Yes you are!"

Pets are the best. <3 Isn't that right, Harper?

      cuddlesleep.JPG

Aww, maybe she'll answer later. Sleep well, tiny cat :)

    • It's the Most Renderful Time of the Year

      DaftProdigy Tinfoil Hatter

Wow, it has been FOREVER since I've updated my RT watchers on how I'm doing. I've gotten all settled into my new apartment in my university town, and my roommate and her cat are lovely! I'll probably share cat pictures later :) But since it's the winter holiday season, I'm back at the incredibly-freezing Prodigy Lair and taking a break from research work to do art. Lots and lots of art :D

Speaking of art, have some snowflakes:

      Silkflakesdofjpg.jpg
(You really should click for bigger--depth of field doesn't have the right effect when scaled down :) )

I had a lot of fun making this one! I used a program called Silk to draft out some snowflake designs--yay sixfold symmetry!--and then picked my favorites of those and made them into 3D objects. Then I kind of cheated to make them look translucent :) I think it's a pretty cool effect!

Also I promise this had nothing to do with the pretty great movie Frozen, which I didn't see until after I rendered the picture.

You can see the textures better here in this render without depth of field:

      Silkflakesnodofjpg.jpg

More fun with this second one: pick out all the doubles of snowflakes that you weren't supposed to notice with the depth of field set :P

Now I'm off to do some last-minute gift wrapping. Have a wonderful holiday season! <3

You're very welcome; I really like circles, so it was a pleasure to make, and I learned a lot in the process.

I would absolutely love it if you made a render with my avatar symbol, although I really don't know what can be done with it!
The important part is the red line, the rest is just... trimmings.

I am impressed with your photoshop skills now. I took a stained glass course once. It it actually not very difficult. The biggest tip I can give is wearing gloves so you do not get burned or cut. I was a bit curious since I have never seen a fused glass piece that large. At that size the glass pieces are usually individually wrapped in copper around the edges then soldering together.

Haha, I'm sorry if I gave you a shock!
A while ago I stopped using the site for over a month, and the alerts just piled up; your journals included.
Since then I've been slowly working my way through the pile, and I just read the backlog of your last 80 journals or so.
You're not the only one who's just had this happen to them (check Domos' image gallery), because I've been a lot more active recently.
I'm a perfectionist and if I've chosen to watch somebody I will actually read their journals (with a maximum of 10 pages backwards), I suppose you could call it OCD.
