I'm sorry to say this isn't a WOO SPORTS! journal.
Man.... am I really getting turned off of sports lately.
First, I want to say, I've loved sports my whole life. I am a competitive person and a huge fan of watching other competitive people who are the best at what they do, duke it out to see who is the best in that moment. It can be anything; Football, basketball, hockey, baseball, boxing, mma, bowling, pool, tennis, poker, WHATEVER! if there are multiple groups trying to be the best, and I can follow it, ill keep an interest. Love it, and always will.
That said, sports culture drives me up a wall. Here you have these athletes who have worked for years and years to develop their trade and refine it to near perfections, are now making possibly ridiculous sums of money, and then blow it by doing drugs, shoplifting, or many times, much much worse. You see these people either lose everything because they are fucking idiotic, entitled, whiney bitches, or even worse, they get away with what they do completely. So much gets swept under the rug and these people get to live their sweet sweet lives because they have the money to make problems go away. Money they got from doing what they love, and almost pissed it all up a tree. (See: "fucking idiotic, entitled, whiney bitches" above) Now, I know other "nonfamous" athletes and nonathletes alike do shirt stuff too. However, these guys are supposed to be above that. They are the top .1% that made it. Act like it.
Then there is the non criminal shit that just bugs the hell out of me too. You have two people (for starters) that irritate me to no end on the same roster, the Seattle Seahawks. For the Hawks lovers out there (12s), yes they are a great team. Yes they are full of youthful talent, and most if not all appear to be "decent" people. That doesn't mean Marshawn Lynch and Kam Chancellor don't have some serious growing up to do, and need to learn how contracts work.
Many remember Lynch's stance from last year on talking to the media. He refused to do it. At first if I remember correctly, it was after a loss and he didn't want to talk about it. That is understandable to an extent. Then he did it again, and got fined for it. THEN during a press conference where all he said was "I'm just here so I don't get fined" it was kinda funny but it's fucked up. He's getting paid millions (8m?) A year by the team and by the NFL. Where do they get that money? Sponsors. Media. Fans. They ask to hear you, you answer to them. You signed a contract that said you would, hence the fine, now go out there and do it. It seemed like a good ole fashioned "stick it to the man" deal, but the NFL isn't the "the man" you work for them. Do your job and get paid, or quit and do something else like everyone fucking else, and let the next guy in line get his shot. And now Lynch is being rewarded with a fat Pepsi endorsement that center AROUND him not talking to the media. Super. Then there's the other tool on the roster that seems to have taken up the torch from Lynch, Mr. Kam Chancellor. He was unhappy with his current contract, which he signed and agreed to, and decided he wouldn't play until he got paid more 900k more. Again, I reiterate, he agreed to and signed his contract. He thinks he has done well and deserves more. That may be true, but if he hadn't lived up to expectation it isn't like he would had money taken from him either. That's the point of a contact. He played weeks 3 and 4 of the season, after he missed a few paychecks and accumulated a couple Mil in fines. Fines that I don't think he's going to have to pay. Again, Super.
These are 2 of the instances that stick out to me. I could go on and on AND ON about the guys all day (in fact I have) From Derrick Rose talking about free agency and his next big paycheck a couple years down the road even though he hasn't done shit, to people like Kobe and Melo milking the cash cow dry then complaining that the rest of their team is garbage and blame the head coaches, and then to fucking Deflate-gate, everything I love about sports keeps getting tainted by the people that play it.
Don't even get me started on sports media....I mean...my god....
More in part 2?
Also, sorry for all the spelling/punctuation errors. I'm on my phone.
