I now have a laptop at work so am no longer cut off from the outside world by out of date technology and EM shielding whilst in the lab. Woooooo!

P.s yes I am still doing my work but now now I can do more than just twiddle my thumbs whilst I wait for stuff to run. smiley7.gif

I haven't really had much of a chance to get onto the site in the last few weeks. Between work and 'play' (for lack of a better word) I just haven't had a lot of free time, which I kind of like if I'm being honest. Now that I've had a chance to stop, sit down, read a few other peoples journals and catch up a little, it's probably time for another instalment of my own rather intermittent journal.

So what has been keeping me so busy in the last few weeks you ask?
      Well.......
      1) HMRC! HMRC are stupid. Fill out a form to say that I need to start doing self-assessment tax returns (YAY!!!) as I'm now doing some acting as a second job and they send me another form saying that I have registered as a director of a corporation. What the fuck HMRC i never said that!
      2) Went to see Fast 7 and came to the conclusion that it is the new definition of gratuitous. To anybody who hasn't seen it yet all I'm going to say is it's a teenage boy's wet dream. Having said that it's a really fun film throughout and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Sad about Paul Walker though.
      3) Learning how to code in Matlab again...... enough said.
      4) Got myself a new air brush for some of the projects that I'm working on. I only got it last week and have been having a play so there's a lot to learn before I'm any good with it. Job for this weekend I think.
      5) Got some Worbla to make a few bits and just generally have a bit of a play and experiment with. Made the fun discovery that Worbla smells like stick toffee pudding! The natural thought was 'OMG I love this stuff and now I want pudding'. O and I also worked out that it's really easy to burn yourself whilst using it.
      6) Went to Wembley to see Reading FC play Arsenal in the FA cup semi-final last Saturday. I was pleasantly surprise and pleased with the game as I had thought that we would get walked all over by Arsenal but we didn't and even gave them a run for the money which was nice.
      7) O and my favourite thing of all was meeting Hugh Jackman and finding out that he snort laughs. He is also a really nice guy.

Did a few other bits too like my full time job and some other stuff but I can't remember those right now.
      So what's next?
      Not a clue.
Work it out as I go I guess.

    • My new favourite book

In general I don't read that many books, maybe 1 every few months (Audible is awesome) but I have recently been reading what quickly became my new favourite book. Quickly meaning within the first 3 lines, those fateful lines being:

      "I'm pretty much fucked.
      That's my considered opinion.
      Fucked."

For anybody that doesn't know what book this brilliant and rather rude opening line is from its The Martian by Andy Weir. As you can probably guess the book is about an astronaut called Mark Watney who gets stranded on Mars after an accident during a manned mission and has to survive 2 years alone on the red planet struggling to survive and waiting to be rescued. The plot is really good with lots of twists and turns (which I won't spoil) and better yet is that the science is even believable. It can be a tad rude from time to time but it's all done very tastefully and in a manner which I would probably use (hell anybody would after getting stranded on Mars alone).

So for anybody who hasn't read it and wants a really good, slightly nerdy and very geeky book give this a look.

I could write a whole elegy about how his work is an inspiration to myself and so many others, how I regret not ever getting the chance to meet him, how the worlds he has helped to create will be with us all a long time from now but I won't. Instead I'll use something which he himself helped to give to the world.

I don't usually say this as I'm the frugal sort but today I fell victim to shopping logic. The aforementioned shopping logic came in the form of a new road bike and a nice one too. Well how could I say no it was reduced from £650 to just £200. That's a saving of £450!
Guess I should go do some more exercise.

So one of my friends mentioned this press release in which more of the cast of star wars: the force awakens where announced, including his sister, who is a damn good martial artist and whom I have been paint balling with in the past.
I do hope that she is a Jedi and not a Sith. If she is, O bugger. I'll be hiding under a rock somewhere.
