I have an old IBM Intellistation M Pro (I think it is a 6850) that I want to get up and running mainly just so I can play around with it. It had a ATI Diamond (AGP) video card in it which I tried swapping out for an Nvidia 9400 GTS (PCI) since I would be running linux, but that didn't want to work after in got past post. An Nvidia 5200 (PCI) did work though although I will try to fix that later. But a bigger problem has emerged that I can't seem to fix.

The problem that I really need help with is that I can't seem to get the operating system to boot after I install it. I am trying to install Peppermint which is a version of Lubunt. When it tries to boot I get the following:

      Boot from ATAPI CD-ROM :
      Boot from ATAPI CD-ROM :
      Hard Disk Error
      Hard Disk Error
DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER

This is the exact message. I was just going to use an IDE HDD (which worked in another computer before I put it in this server) but then tried a SCSI drive and both of them fail to boot. The peppermint live disk shows that the hard drive is formatted correctly and the system files are on the hard drive. It just won't boot. Grub doesn't even come up. I don't know what to do at this point which is why I am asking for help. I don't know if I have overlooked anything or what. Any help would be much appreciated.

      The specs:
      1 GB ECC RDRAM
2 Xeon 2 Ghz dual core processors
      Nvidia 5200 FX
1 SCSI HDD or 1 IDE HDD depending on which ever will work first

    • Need help adding Win 7 to Grub 1.97

in Forums > Need help adding Win 7 to Grub 1.97 | Follow this topic

I need some help in adding Windows 7 to the grub 1.97 boot list. I just installed Windows 7 today and of course it wiped out Grub, I then restored Grub using the Ubuntu 9.10 disk since I haven't bothered to up grade to 10.04 yet (a few things that I need to figure out how to change in 10.04 before I fully update) but Windows 7 was not on the list. I'm trying to find directions to do this but I am hesitant to go ahead with them as I would prefer not to mess them in case something should happen that would wipe put Ubuntu.

I have followed the instructions here as it seems to be the most relevant but I can not figure out how to make nano save the changes.
      erickoo.wordpress.com/2009/06/14/how-to-add-vista-partition-to-grub-2-ubuntu-9-10-karmic-koala/

I only have one hard drive with Windows 7 installed to sda1 (first partition) and Ubuntu installed to sda3 (third partition). I think that the information provided should be what is needed to solve this problem but if more is needed then I can provided more. Any help would be much appreciated.

I'm looking for some help on picking out a motherboard. I have a computer that the motherboard died on and I want some help on trying to make sure that the motherboard that I picked is good enough or some help in picking another one. Any help would be much appreciated. I have an $80 budget I am looking to order one from newegg, so far this is the one ASUS M4A785-M AM3/AM2+/AM2 AMD 785G HDMI Micro ATX AMD Motherboard. This board seems to have everything that I need but it only has two fan ports. Are there any motherboards that would be better?

Things that I am looking for:
      AMD motherboard
      micro ATX form factor
supports at least an Athlon 64 (which is the CPU that I have)
      4 RAM slots
supports at least 3Gb of DDR2 RAM
on board video, sound, and Ethernet port
a DVI slot (they all seem to have that now)

      Optional:
3 slots for fans (this includes the fan for the CPU)

I need a little bit of help with WINE. I have a program called Lego Digital Designer that I want to get to work under WINE. I have successfully installed it but when I try to open the program, after it gets finished loading all of its components , it immediately closes. I'm not sure what to do to stop it from closing and I would like to have it working by tomorrow as I want to use for a technical writing project involving writing directs on how to put a small lego set together.

      my laptop:
      Ubuntu 9.10
      2 Gbs of RAM
1.6 Ghz pentium dual core processor

If any more details are on the computer hardware or my specific OS setup for this problem then let me know. I don't really have any experience with WINE so any help will be much appreciated.

I've been having some problems with my laptop over the past couple of days. The computer will be running fine and then all of a sudden it will lag and not allow me to do anything (not talking about videogames). Normally when all of the programs stop responding it is because the CPU has reached 100% usage or at least 95% but not this time. The problem that I'm having is that the CPU usage drops from normal levels all the way to anywhere from 0% to 4% according to task manager and it will freeze up. It is so bad that even task manager is affected by and won't switch tabs. When this problem starts it go to the low levels of usage (freezing up) and then back up to normal levels (for the programs that I have open) and will then drop back to low levels and repeat. I only get a window of a few seconds to do anything when the computer goes back to acting normal. I have tried running a virus scan and a malware scan both in safe mode and in normal mode and they have found nothing. I don't think that it has anything to do hardware because my Ubuntu partition ran fine. I'm not sure what to try now and I could use some help.

My computer is a Gateway laptop, I forget which model.
      Windows Vista Home Premium
      2 GBs of RAM
Intel Pentium 1.6 GHz dual core
      AVG for antivirus
      Malwarebytes for malware and spyware

    • Need to borrow an XP disk.

in Forums > Need to borrow an XP disk. | Follow this topic

      Darkwarrior2

I need to borrow a legit Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 install disk. I have a legal and valid serial key for it and I am willing to prove it. I accidentally messed up the MBR while attempting to use the family computer to install Ubuntu to my hard drive since the desktop that I am building (just a collection of old and used parts to learn how to build a desktop) lacks a CD drive. Unfortunately I had a stupid moment and forgot that Grub would overwrite the MBR for XP even though I installed it to my hard drive and not the family computer's hard drive. I had tried to take the family computer's hard drive out but didn't realize it had a latch on the SATA cable that connects it to the hard drive and figured oh-well. I should have just waited for a CD drive. I will work with one or more of the CTAs to prove that the serial key is legit since I trust them not to go off and use it for themselves. I will provide a mailing address through rvb's messaging system.

My parents and/or younger brother some how got the family computer infected with some trojan while I was at college. I don't know what exactly the trojan was though. I had installed Avira antivirus personal edition before this but they said something about the trojan was affecting Avira and they ended up uninstalling Avira. My mother tried to do something about it but managed to hit some kind of default button or another (I wasn't there at the time so I don't know all of the details). What ever she did caused the computer to have Client Services for Netware which was affecting logging in and switching user profiles. I managed to get rid of Client Services for Netware and reverted the log in and switching of users back to normal. Unfortunately, besides that I don't know what all happened when she hit what ever default button that she did.

However one of the problems that has come up is that we can no longer get on the internet (just to note, we are on dial up). The computer will dial the connection and connect to the internet but we can't use IE or FF to browse the internet. I installed AVG 8 on the computer but it won't even update through the dial up connection. I can't figure out how to fix the internet connection and I need help with that. To get around the internet connection problem for AVG, I downloaded the full antivirus definition file from http://www.softpedia.com/get/Others/Signatures-Updates/AVG-AntiVirus-Definitions.shtml. However, I can't figure out how to make AVG detect the file and use it. Once AVG is up and running I hope that it will detect and take care of the trojan. I have Highjackthis installed on the computer now as well and can put up the scan results if needed.

The computer is a Gateway 831 GM

      Computer specs:
Windows XP media center edition, version 2002, SP3
      Pentium 4 CPU 3GHz
      1 GB RAM

That edit in the first post from Dimono is more in reference to the "no chatter" rule. You're taking it too literally by thinking he meant the image gallery, specifically -- he was just saying there's not need to post in that thread unless a link is included. But a link to the actual image in question is much more helpful.

In that picture the three of us were actually in a custom game alone, so no triple kills. But I agree completely, I seldom ever get into a warthog because it never lasts very long.

My family doesn't play in multiplayer very often, mostly because my mom sucks out loud. My dad and I do sometimes, though, and it's not too bad.
