Heres a light read into my studies for science ^___________^ hehe.
Yes, I actually bothered to type this all, happens when your overly bored.
Human Impact on the Ecosystem
For thousands of years most people lived and worked in small villages. Populations were small ans then natural resources around them were all they needed to survive. People used simple handmade tools and lived in simple dwellings lit by a warm fire. Clothes were handmade, and food was either hunted or gathered from nearby. During this period of human history, the environment dominated humankind. We now live in a very different world where humans dominate much of the environment.
In the mid-1700s, the Industrial Revolution turned humankind's simple world upside down. By 1860, many small villages in Europe, particularly in Great Britain had become industrial towns. Goods previously made by human hands were now constructed by machine. Roads and railways began to crisscross the landscape to meet demand for goods and supply raw materials to the factories. Natural habitat began to be destroyed or altered permanently. Factories and transport released large quantities of waste and pollutants directly into the air, rivers and soil. Human civilization had been changed forever. So had the environment.
A pollutant is anything that makes then environment unfit or unhealthy for the organisms that live there. Pollutants affect the atmosphere, the land and the water. Although some pollutants arise from natural causes such as volcanic eruptions, they are more commonly the result of human activity.
A mixture of nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide and pollutants rushes into your lungs whenever you breathe. The two main sources of the pollutants are...
•Industry: Factories release a constant stream of pollutants into the atmosphere. These include sulphur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen dioxide (NO2) carbon monoxide (CO), dust and smoke.
•Motor Vehicles: The number of cars on our roads increase every year, releasing hydrocarbons, lead (Pb), nitric oxide (NO), and carbon monoxide (CO). In the presence of sunlight, these pollutants react to form smog made up from ozone (O3), nitric acid (HNO3) and formaldehyde and other pollutants.
Enhanced Global Warming
Everyday the sun shines on earth, delivering vast amounts of energy. Much of that energy is absorbed by plants, rocks, soil, buildings, roads and the sea, but a lot is released back into the atmosphere as heat. his heat would eventually escape into space if something didn't stop it. There are gases in the atmosphere that naturally trap this heat keeping the atmosphere warm. These gases are known as the greenhouse gases and the warming they cause is the greenhouse effect. The Earth would be far too cold for life if there was no greenhouse effect.
Greenhouse gases are released whenever fossil fuels such as coal, gas, petrol and oil are burnt. The main greenhouse gases released are carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, ozone and water vapor. The amount of these gases in the atmosphere has increased dramatically with the industrialization. They are now trapping more heat then ever before, leading to an enhanced greenhouse effect and global warming.
Global temperatures have increased by 0.6%C (I don't care if you use F!!!) over the last hundred years. This has sped up the melting of ice glaciers in Antarctica and Greenland. This additional water has made sea levels rise several centimeters and they are expected to rise even further in greenhouse gases continue to be pumped into the atmosphere at this current rate. Some likely results would be:
•widescale flooding of coastal regions, destroying man ecosystems and their inhabitants.
•cities, farmland and some island nations disappearing underwater
•increased sea temperatures, destroying coral reef ecosystems that will not tolerate the increased temperature
The streams, rivers and oceans of the world have become polluted from a variety of sources. Some of these are listed below
•Sewage: Sewage contains contaminants such as soap, detergents and other cleaning agents from washing machines dishwashers, baths and showers, as well as human wastes.
•Agricultural Run-Off: Fertilizers add large quantities of nitrogen and phosphorus to the ecosystem. These find there way into run-off water and ground water, eventually ending up in rivers, bays and oceans.
•Sediment Pollution: Clearing land for housing development and farming causes large scale erosion. Soil particals are washed into the waterways causing silting.
•Inorganic Chemicals: Industry releases inorganic compounds directly into waterways or into the soil where they are carried by ground water into the waterways. Chemicals released into the atmosphere are absorbed by rain droplets and fall to earth as acid rain
•Salinity: Removing trees to plat crops and irrigations results in a rise in ground water level. as the water table rises it brings with it dissolved salts from the rock below, this increases the salinity of the ground water, making it unusable by many plat species.
Soil pollution is more commonly referred to as soil degradation. Over 65% of soil degradation is caused by overgrazing and deforestation.
•Overgrazing: This is when land is degraded by allowing more animals to graze in an area then it can sustain
•Deforestation: This is the large-scale removal of trees to allow for more grazing land. Trees act like giant straws, sucking the water out from the ground and releasing it back into the atmosphere through their leaves. Trees therefore keep the underground water table at a lower level. When trees are removed, the water level rises, if the salty water gets near many plants will die.
