      DeadAmaranth

Well okay not proof in the absolutest sense. You'll have to take my word.

But I did create this. The flaws in the mixing should, well no, they don't prove anything either.

Just trust me. Have I ever lied to you?

      Anyway.

Yes, um wow. I consider this my best yet. By far. It goes somewhere. It has release and breath and then buildup and it actually wants to go somewhere, and even more exciting, I think I can manage to do it.

I thought it would come out easier. I thought once I got a decent-ish mix, that I could leave it alone for the duration of a track.

      Oh no no no.

You gotta take into consideration how loud or soft something sounds with and without its musical neighbors. Witness the lowering of the bass volume at the calmer part. Witness it, the kickdrum, and the highhats all rising in volume to bring in the next drop. Okay not technically a "drop" according to real producers and DJs but what else can I call it? Mini-drop? Hey that sounds cute.

I still need to work on mixing bass. It sounds roly-poly but lacks definition next to the synths. More EQ un-masking to work on. Yay!

Something about the normalization makes the snare jump out and beat you in the face. I apologize if it hurts on your system. I mixed it on my crappy headphones, not even my 200 FRN Sennheisers. For reality's sake, you know. Also I doubt this will sound good on speakers. I seriously do. But knock yourself out, and the more input the better.

The hardest part came from trying to slice up and beat-sync the spoken audio bit. That took a good chunk of work, moving transients around and looping over the song to get it working. I also kinda threw it in there and didn't fudge with EQ too much. Hope you can hear it well enough. Considering I can't hear most psytrance movie quotations, I guess it works.

Anyone who knows the quote and the movie whence it came gets three platinum stars. For realz.

      Thanks for your time. Enjoy?

    • Hmpf. And I thought I respected him.

      DeadAmaranth

Well, nothing lasts forever, as they say.

Now I know I can't judge completely without experiencing it myself.

I just wonder about his reasoning.

He could have resigned. I like to believe I would have.

He could take his message to another forum. People would continue to watch and listen to and enjoy him without the network's aegis.

Heck, I think people might even like him more flying solo. The independence of it would make me respect him.

But, no. That didn't happen. The master won. For whatever reason.

And the old black-and-white left/right blindness continues.

It wouldn't bother me too much considering its normalcy. But I came to expect more from him. Integrity. Individuality.

      Shame.

However,... he can still set things right. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

But I won't hold my breath.

      Oh well.

Should the Government Stop Dumping Money Into a Giant Hole?

The Onion gets it right so many times.

I find it a truly truly sad sign of our times that you more often than not get the most accurate news from comedy such as this and The Daily Show.

On the other hand, thank goddess such outlets exist, huh? Helps to keep the sanity.

      Plus I lolled. smiley12.gifsmiley8.gif

I don't agree with all the interpretations presented herein, but I do think it serves as nice entertainment and perhaps an aperitif for learning more about the Hermit.

Too bad that he died so early. Who knows what he would have accomplished with merely another decade of creation.

Lucky enough for some, though, his philosophy lives and therefore we can ourselves determine its conclusion through our own living.

      Woot!

So, the chief risk officer of Bear Stearns gets named VP of bank supervision of the New York Branch of the Fed.

And The Savior Himself fed from the trough of Goldman Sachs, a former CEO of which now runs the Treasury.

Does anyone need any more examples of these people's insulation, entrenchment and utter disconnect from reality? Anyone?

Didn't think so. But don't worry, if the state doesn't make it all better, surely it will do so the next time around.

I mean, the next time after that.

      Er, the time after that.

No wait, really, just a few more terms (years, decades, centuries) and everything gets better.

Just wake me up when that day gets here. Thousands of years have passed; I'd call it long overdue. *winks*

Let me know if you ever decide to stop waiting, though.

Not fun. It seeps down the throat, makes me all itchy and nasty feeling like an impeding cold.

But there's no infection. I'm taking Amoxicillin q.i.d. from my tooth extraction, I mean, I doubt there is one. Just mucus. Yum.

      Congested. Icky. Coughs.

Napped on and off all day today. Might miss work tomorrow if I don't start to breath enough to actually move around faster than a snail tomorrow. Er, sorry Snail.

And dammit... I'm kinda tired of bad-news journals. I don't like this habit I've gotten into. smiley3.gif

    • A couple of creations

      DeadAmaranth

The first: a simple beat I put together in Ableton. I goofed around with a new virtual instrument, which proved fun but didn't go anywhere. I switched direction to culling from some phrases I created previously. Then I topped it off with an electric-y drumkit and my own bass drum creation (a sine wave, basically).

Set your audio player to repeat track, and listen for four cycles or so. This could go somewhere. Maybe. As usual, I aimed for psytrance and came out nowhere near. This sounds like straight up old-school techno. Ah well. Still promising. If quiet... what the fuck does it take to get tracks to come out at the same volume as professionally-mastered ones? A super-duper limiter? What? *shrugs*

The second: pure improvisation. My keyboard skills improved. Although, haha, I actually made this a few months back. I set ZynAddSubFX to record and played. For about eight minutes. The last little bit around seven minutes in (the part that sounds composed, in other words... and also changes keys drastically) belongs to Opeth. It occurs at the end of a song called The Leper Affinity. I skipped the parts I didn't know. And made one goof.

Wait wait! My creation. Oh yes. One thing I could name it: an experiment in two chords. Namely, Bm and A. The first dissonant section came out because I messed up my fingering and made something nasty. So I ran with it instead of stopping. The second one I would call intentional... but only barely. My favorite and proudest moment comes at the 5 minute mark. I have no idea where that came from, but I hope it visits more often. Again, I improvised this, so the unrhythmic pauses come from my ears and/or fingers finding the next spot. I could have fixed that with editing, but eh, I like the honesty. Peek into my studio, heh.

Overall, definitely one could laugh at both offerings. But I prefer to look at it as promise. Now if I could get off my ass and work instead of leaving it to chance and happenstance. You know? *winks*

P.S.: I love the dynamic range on a piano. You can do so much to a passage by playing it louder or softer. *sighs*

I bought a memory upgrade for my mother tonight.

The computer I built for her a year or so ago had a dead DIMM.

I never got around to buying another. Lazy and or broke.

Bought some tonight. DDR2 even. Yay!

Got home. Tried to plug it in.

Shit. This mobo only takes DDR. I could have SWORN, people, SWORN that I bought her a motherboard with DDR2 capacity. Crap.

      Oh well.

She's getting "memory exhausted" messages with her current amount (256).

These new DIMMs would have made it 2 gigs. Overkill for someone who only plays on pogo.com, but eh... why not? Certainly affordable, you know?

Sometime this weekend I will fix this problem.

Then I get to tackle her XP license. Somehow I didn't pay attention and bought a VOLUME license. From some fly-by-night website. It was cheap. Now I know why. They oversold the volume license, and now her copy is no longer valid.

For someone who claims to know about computers I do make mistakes. Bleh.

On the plus side... it is still a nice setup. A simple 150 FRN video card (she's using the Intel chipset graphics now), along with RAM that works (ha) and her PC would make mine weep in envy. Funny stuff. I build my mom's computer nicer than my own.

      Aren't I sweet? smiley8.gif

Yeah, it's weird, I'm the same way... about the whole superficial-ness and prejudging.
I figure it's fine as long as my initial judgments are malleable and don't completely control who I talk to and hang out with it's.
It's a convenient and natural way to meet people you're more likely to become friends with perhaps.
The piercing is just a little way of trying to portray who I am on the inside more. I feel like I don't accurately advertise my individuality superficially. Which isn't ultimately important but... maybe it is more than I think.

It was a pleasure, and I would completely agree with your assessment of the situation. I will be honest, I am guilty of using the label far too often, but to elaborate on it unlike so many others do.

You should try and read, The Atheist Manifesto by Michael Onfrey.

A very interesting read if nothing else. He delves into the lack of development on the word and the issues around its usage.

    • 1984

Well, although the word "atheist" is much more contrite and to the point, there is room for more explanation. It doesn't flesh out all the ideas behind one's belief in the supernatural or lack there of.

Just as one can call themselves a "theist" and leave it at that. It does have a connotation as to what you believe drives the universe, ect. Jumping off from that point is just deciding whether or not you want it to affect your personal life.

Well.. I sort of had to drop guitar... since I was borrowing my dad's over the summer, and now that i'm in the dorm, I don't have one. As to Bach, I like him too, thanks to piano, Bach and Mozart. You can do it. Just takes practice. Maybe try practicing one hand at a time on the harder pieces, and get each hand to memorize it. It's a cool feeling havign them work so independently of each other and great sound. If i thought about it too much, I'd be more likely to screw up, so I think the trick might be muscle memory and relaxing.
