There a number of things that they just don't tell you when you transfer to one of the largest state universities in the country. At a school where post application submission you become a number it can be hard to get a little help in the bureaucratic quagmire called "Administration", especially if you're coming from a small university where even the cafeteria workers remember you. So, here's a helpful little guide.
1.) CONSISTENTLY check your online application status. This will alert you to such issues as the wrong transcript being submitted because the school sure as hell isn't gonna tell you.
2.) Any time you talk to administration write down the name of who you talked with- telling the admissions office that you talked to "some guy with a cold" isn't really gonna cut it.
3.) Attend the "welcome to (insert your chosen major here)" class! They will go over the requirements and tricks of the department
4.) Go see your counselor- they know more than you might think.
5.) No matter what the health center tells you, you need a current medical file on record. Submit a COMPLETE one or you're going to get a nasty email saying that they are putting your student account on hold until you submit it.
6.) If you live with insane people off campus and they decide to involve the police in their insanity you're gonna go through hell.
7.) Courses with pages online are magic! So are courses that email you the powerpoint slides ahead of time.
There's most likely even more, Administration is a nightmare to deal with in any school setting... But life is great like that- enjoy your higher education till you stand outside a lecture hall and puzzle as to why out of all the people coming out of one of the double doors one person doesn't realize that the other door opens too...

Some moron thinks it's amusing to neg mod all my journals. Seriously kid, don't you have anything better to do with your time? Like say.... live life?

Moving on, I have an Asian Mythology Exam on Monday night, which is annoying as I will have to drag my butt back across campus at 7 at night for an exam for a class which I detest. Had exams in all my other classes though, Brain and Mind was brutal- to be expected. Huzzah higher learning. I applied for the Psychology Counseling Center's Paraprofessional Program. They only admit 36 people... so yeah... we'll see what happens there.

      Viva Life.

    • House of Asia No More

      Death_kitty

Well.... where to begin? Ah, let's start here. I'm living in a safe house right now out of a suit case with my backpack and my textbooks, notebooks, a pillow and blanket. I suppose it all started with my "best friend" Sarah. Who decided suddenly that my mere existence was causing her unsubstantiated amounts of personal grief. I moved into a house in Urbana with 6 of her friends and herself late in August. All except 1 where Asian. After moving in, the whole UIUC reality hit pretty hard. I had just moved into a house with my best friend and 6 people I didn't know. I moved to a school, which is about 10 times the size of the school I came from. And the first week of classes didn't go so well at all. Needless to say I was kinda depressed about all of it, then after the first week of classes my friend Matt came down to visit.
Sarah moved pretty fast and about an hour after he arrived, she had asked him out. Meanwhile, I was pretty depressed and ignored up in my attic. The depression only got worse throughout the weekend and I finally managed to start feeling better on Monday but Sarah and Matt decided by then that my depression was making them angry. (Oh no)
Tuesday Sarah created a hugely dramatic scene because she seemed to feel that coming up to my room and knocking on my door is not a way to facilitate conversation. So after 3 hours, I thought we'd worked a lot of stuff out. Then 2 days later, I get called down, and told that I'm being kicked out of the house. Why? Because my depression has caused Sarah to stop eating, throw up, and fall behind on school work. ????? Ok...? What? So, she's sitting there in full drama queen form, and I essentially told them where they could shove their offer to help me find an apartment. I then bought a bus ticket home and left on Friday without telling anyone.
Saturday and Sunday I spent looking for an apartment online. Then Saturday they call me at 3 in the afternoon cause they're "concerned" and I told them I was fine and to go to hell. Then at midnight, I get a call from the Urbana Fuzz asking if I'm ok.... repetition there kiddies... Then Sunday when I get back, I find my door in splinters. I confronted the only two around about this, and they where unrepentant and acted as though I was some suicidal psychopath. Then one of the housemates attacked my 55 year old mother.... I mean c'mon... my mom? So I got into that and he grabbed me and my father pulled him off. At that point I decided it was time to get the hell out. I told them to call the reality company and instead the called the police. So I had to explain to 4 officers what had happened as I packed up my stuff and got the hell out. The police helped me get into emergency housing, and now I'm looking for an apartment.... so yeah.... Welcome to U of I.

Day 3 of classes at U of I was not so good. Reason? I was carrying my tuba around to all of my classes. Why did I have to do this? Because the properties manager messed me over. He told me yesterday that he'd have a place to keep my tuba overnight for my audition today since my class schedule goes 9-10 10-11 audition at 11, class at 12-1 class from 2-3:15. No time to run back to my off campus house. So, I wanted to keep it somewhere overnight so that it would not come to lectures with me. Well, he lied. He had no place for me to keep it, but he only told me this after I had dragged my tuba to the music building (about 1 mile). So I dragged it back home, and brought it to lectures with me today. Not very fun. By estimate it was about 3 miles that I walked with it total today. 8:30-3:15.... Then I came home and spent 3 hours trying to make our goddamn wireless router work. I finally got it. And suddenly became the hero of a bunch of Asians (go me). All of my housemates are asian except one... and me. There are 8 of us total. :) It's an experience. But they are all very nice.

Long day. I'm going to bed early. smiley9.gif

Avantasia has released a symphonic metal compilation album. Avantasia is the side project of Tobias Sammet, the lead singer and front man for the power metal group Edguy. The album is a giant surprise. I received it as a birthday present and was expecting it to be amusing, as Edguy tends to be, but was really impressed with it. Roy Kahn does guest vocals, as does Alice Cooper, and Jorn Lande (who works with the Ayreon projects) I really thought this album is awesome and if you see it you should pick it up and give it a listen.

      Lost in Space
Last track of the album, one of my favorites. smiley12.gif

    • Batman Gotham Knight

      Death_kitty

So, Batman Gotham Knight came out earlier this week. For those who don't know what the hell I'm talking about, it is a collection of short animated stories detailing the life and escapades of the caped crusader in between Batman Begins and the much anticipated Dark Knight. Anyone else having Animatrix flashbacks? I was excited for this... but sadly, after borrowing it from a friend, it didn't really live up to the awesomeness one expects from Batman. It was almost painfully Animu at times, complete with Bishonen Bruce Wayne (sparkly eyes and pretty hair included) The art was interesting and somewhat varied, but the story lines didn't really impress me, I mean come on... an EMP chest device that can deflect bullets even at close range? Also, the scene of Batman shoving a grenade down Killer Croc's throat kinda seemed so... un Batman given the fact that BATMAN DOESN'T KILL... (The $30 price tag didn't help matters) To sum it up. If you have time to kill, see it. But get it from a friend, local library etc. Not really worth the money.

Yep, I can do all that too. And yes, it is quite tempting, although the thought that I'll probably lose more than just my job is enough to keep it at bay for a while.

Oh, I won't have trouble getting that Friday off -- I have one no-questions-asked day per year that I can take, and since it's also my last day with Windermere I think I can spin it as tying up loose ends there and then having a convention to go to in Seattle that I really don't want to sit in traffic on the way to :)

Seems none of us are lucky enough to have one of the 129 who voted against it... :(

Seriously though, I think this tells us that we need to start electing liberals, not just Democrats -- I don't know about you, but I'm done with ignoring the fact that there's a distinction between the two. And Barack isn't making it any easier to vote for him by coming out in full support of the resolution, either (on a similar note, it sounds like you need to start whipping your politicians into shape over there in Illinois, what with all the support for illegal wiretapping and drunk driving and such going on smiley1.gif ).

...Wow. Reminds me of the hardware classes I had to take, except maybe a bit more grueling since it has to do with math.

    • WalkinDude

A 15-25-page paper for a math class? That does sound a bit absurd.

    • WalkinDude

I took a statistics class at the community college I attended from a teacher who also taught a class kind of like that... I wanted to take it, if for no other reason than because the guy was a total oddball and I like that sort of thing in an instructor (not to mention that my high school was paying my tuition as well), but I didn't have time before I transferred up to my university.

    • WalkinDude

That makes two of us, then. I don't think I've passed a math test since I got to my college, although I've successfully passed all the math-based classes I've taken so far (albeit a little too closely for comfort in some cases).

    • WalkinDude

Yeah, it's been a difficult major to follow at times (lots and lots of math involved), but I'm nearly done with it so I can't complain anymore.

    • WalkinDude

Sounds like an interesting lineup (no pun intended), although this is coming from someone who left music for computer science, so my opinion may not be as... valid as others.

    • WalkinDude

Well, looking 6-7 ledgers down from the staff and trying to discern what that would be when one was trained with baritone music isn't exactly a cakewalk, either :)

I'll agree that thinking is overrated when music is concerned, though -- I always enjoyed being able to enter that happy medium between zoning out and paying attention to what's on the page in front of me.

    • WalkinDude

Interesting. I worked rather closely with tuba players, since I rarely had music that was specifically written for my instrument and what was was usually the b flat tuba's part anyway, just written an octave higher.

    • WalkinDude

Electric/upright bass. Suffice to say, the amount of effort I had to put in just to be able to play either (transportation, set-up, etc) far exceeded any benefit I got from performing.
