From what I've been able to tell, Fools started this either last night or this morning (I saw it this morning, whichever one happens to be the case). Our good friend jedipoet hit me up with it in his journal when I showed up in the CBM thread today and... well... posted this (I wasn't trying to look like a passive aggressive bitch, but I can now see it may have seeming that way). Anyhoo, what's done is done. Here it is:

List seven songs you are into right now. No matter what the genre, whether they have words, or even if they’re not any good, but they must be songs you’re really enjoying now, shaping your spring. Post these instructions in your blog along with your 7 songs. Then tag 7 other people to see what they’re listening to.

      1. "The Prestige" by David Julyan (picks up around the 7:50 mark -- I linked the Spanish version because the audio is louder). I've been listening to the whole score (which is pretty creepy), but that last track is great. I especially like playing it while my freshmen are taking tests. Creeps 'em out. smiley8.gif

      2. "Hit Me With Your Best Shot" by Pat Benatar. Great song. Put together a playlist of rock stuff a few days ago and included, reminding me of how much I like Pat Benatar.

      3. "Bad Reputation" by Joan Jett & the Blackhearts. Another fantastic song by a fantastic female rocker. I realized this afternoon that it's kind of funny to be a teacher playing this while grading final exams.

      4. "Revolution" by the Beatles. The only scene I've seen from Across the Universe was this one, and I was thoroughly unimpressed with the guy's voice. I realize I can't judge the film on that scene, and one of these days I'll watch it, but that guy was pretty terrible with the song. So I went to listen to the original version and it's been with me since.

      5. "The Metal" by Tenacious D. A funny song that's also pretty good. Came on while grading the yesterday and made me smile.

      6. "The Devil Went Down To Georgia" by Steve Ouimette. I realize this song is blasphemy to a lot of people (especially hardcore Charlie Daniels fans), but I love it. Absolutely love it. And while I have you on this topic, I want to say that I do have a problem with the song. Not this particular recording, but the song itself. And this is that the devil's solo is CLEARLY better. The contest was rigged from the start by ol' Charlie. I think he knew damn well that he cheated, but did it anyway. Incidentally, this recording is the only one where I MIGHT be inclined to side with Johnny, but even then I'd be hesitant and only think about granting it because of length. Whatever.

      7. "Life on Mars?" by Seu Jorge. I'm a HUGE David Bowie fan, and when I saw The Life Aquatic, my mind was blown by the soundtrack. Seu Jorge has such a great voice and really puts so much emotion into it. I wanted something soft to play during the exams for my freshmen yesterday and today and decided on a playlist with Bowie, Flight of the Conchords (the song "Bowie"), and some good ol' Seu. This is my favorite of his covers (and incidentally one of my favorite Bowie songs).

BTW, I'm looking at the list.... Pure coincidence that so many songs are GH3. Sure, that's what introduced me to that cover of "TDWDTG," but I've been listening to each song separately. Anyway, a lot of the Family has already been tagged, so I'm going to only name people outside of that group. You know, see if we can't spread this around a bit.

The school year starts 18 August. On 17 August, Boston will be in Greenville (only a few hours from anywhere in the state), and on the 19th in Atlanta (varies, but doable). NEITHER DATE IS CONVENIENT.

Curse you tour schedulers for not thinking of the teachers who love Boston!

Oh, and it's Galactica-related (Erok pointed out that I neglected to say what said comment would spoil).

So, I loved the film. Probably my favorite film of 2006, and there were some other movies that year that I absolutely loved. Well, one of my room mates has suggested for a while that I read the book on which it was based. Since they're so different, it's not just reading what I've already seen, but they're so similar that I would probably like it as much as -- if not more than -- I do the film. I've had so much going on for such a long time that I never got around to it.

Well, today I was over at the mall today (turns out the Genesis I bought had Saturn controllers, which obviously weren't compatible.... it was funny, as soon as I walked in the guy saw the controllers and said, "those are Saturn controllers; you bought a Genesis! My bad, dude") and, on a whim, decided to go over to the book store to see if they had it. Luckily, they did, so I've been reading it this afternoon.

I'm not even 100 pages in, and I already absolutely love this book. The writing is really well constructed, and while I'm only in Borden's diary, knowing the story's prestige (hah, see what I did there?) makes reading it fantastic. Had I not seen the movie, I'd be fairly confused, but as is, it's great. I can't wait to finish it. I don't think I've been this into reading something since I hit up Fight Club last summer (just realized that was about a year ago.... I guess I have a thing this time of year to read the source material for movies I love).

      Drums888

What is this?! The RT guys said something amusing outside of an RvB video? Well, one of them. And only sort of. It's only funny because it's true. In regard to the the "GTA4 residuals" thing, Geoff responded:

Boo fucking hoo. He made $100 grand in 20 weeks of work. I'm sure all the firemen, teachers and construction workers of the world are lending a sympathetic ear right now.

Funny thing, my first thought when reading the news was, "Boo fuckin' hoo! When I can make $100 grand in 20 weeks making sure society continues to exist, then I'll be willing to listen to your complaints about the entertainment industry and the contract you knowingly signed."

Funny how we become our stereotypes.

So, here's the thing: my graduation photos were posted on-line, but I don't want to pay to buy them. The on-line version has a water mark, and my Photoshop skills are not to the point where I can remove watermarks and have them look decent.

Is anyone? I mean, really? I know this is an incredibly bizarre thing to ask, a difficult (if not impossible) request, and borderline illegal (only borderline... I mean, it IS me, should I have to buy myself? that's like gay narcissistic prostitution), and I could just fork over the $10 to get one 5x7 to scan, but I thought I'd try this first. Here's the image.

      slains02ii9.jpg

Yes, that is one of my graduation photos. I snuck the book in (as mentioned in that journal) and did a pose before walking, then after shaking all hands. I really like the picture.

EDIT: Data suggested a second picture where the watermark is slightly different, so here it is. The angle isn't exactly the same (my head is slightly off-center, whereas I'm looking right at the camera in the first one), but it's close, if that helps at all. Tomorrow I can try to get a shot or two that better duplicates that facial expression and angle, but as far as the tux goes, I can't really get any more, seeing as it has been returned.

    • Greatest Purchase Ever

      Drums888

So, it turns out that at some point, a Play-n-Trade opened in the mall of my home town. I checked it out over the weekend, and was pretty impressed, mainly because of their "vintage" gaming selection. I went back today and made the greatest purchase of all time:

      p1000940cz5.jpg
That's right, a Sega Genesis. I had one of the YEARS ago but it broke.

Let's look at the details a bit.

      p1000941ow3.jpg
Notice the promise of "High Definition Graphics"? Something tells me standards of the early '90s and standards of today have changed.

      p1000944og5.jpg
Most of these were bundled with the system. The only additional purchases I threw in were Vectorman, The Lion King (say what you will, that game kicked ass), and X-Men 2. I also accidentally bought a duplicate of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, so I'll take that back tomorrow and trade it out for something.

I asked the guy if he happened to know if they had Maximum Carnage, and they didn't. He thought it was cool I asked about it, though, and we ended up having a chat about that game (which kicked ass, if you haven't played it). We also talked about Mortal Kombat II and how to this day it's still each of our favorite Mortal Kombat game. I even rate new releases in the series based on how good they are in comparison to Mortal Kombat II.

I am so pleased with this. The bundle of system, controllers, and all but four of the games was $35. After the four I threw in and tax it came to an even $50. Totally worth it. I'll throw up an edit tomorrow to let you know what I switched the duplicate Sonic for.

So, I don't know if any of you are into scores as much as I am. I love them. Film scores, TV scores, whatever. I regularly listen to both. Anyway, I finally got my hand on the score to the HBO miniseries John Adams, and it is fantastic.

First off, if you haven't seen the miniseries, I very, VERY highly recommend it. If you're a history nerd you'll probably enjoy the fact that (with very few exceptions) it's incredibly accurate, and for everyone else, it's just a damned good, well told story. Superb acting, directing, and especially writing. Plus, as I said above, the score is incredible. I've been trying to find it for weeks, and having finally done so, I've listened to it straight through three times now (that's since this morning, and including the fact that I was teaching most of the day).

Just thought I'd throw that out there. Great miniseries, great score. I highly recommend both (though admittedly only the latter if you are a score kind of person.... I can see how it wouldn't appeal to people that don't listen to that kind of thing regularly).

Also, Stephen Dillane as Thomas Jefferson is fantastic, but I'm a Jefferson fanboy, so I may be a bit biased. smiley8.gif

      Page 1000

So I put some work into it, and here's an order I've come up with for getting every family member on page 1000:

      1 erokdragun
      2 foolsfolly
      3 film_geek
      4 jedipoet
      5 datalaughing
      6 theLPgoonie
      7 syrix2
      8 powerbomb141
      9 grunthos2
      10 artaylor
      11 baraxis
      12 capdac
      13 darthj3sus
      14 drums888
      15 elite_muller
      16 garand
      17 guitar_king
      18 jonixlord
      19 marsmj
      20 morelikepuma
      21 peteszahut666
      22 qwirtle
      23 raginasian
      24 spartanproto
      25 supergenius
      26 spartanproto
      27 drdoom287
      28 gdchickoo8
      29 sharpasatack
      30 ren19

The first nine are loosely based on who's most likely to be around, the last four are super-inactive people, and the middle chunk (if you didn't notice) is just alphabetical. It got too complicated trying to figure out who posts more often than who.

So we're going to have a practice run on page 900 -- hopefully.

A rule of thumb for if/when there are absentees:
Erok will start us off. After he posts, if Fools doesn't post for three minutes, then Geek should go ahead and post, then Poet, then Data, etc. -- Fools can post whenever he arrives after that. If Erok posts and 6 minutes pass without Fools or Geek posting and Poet is around, he should go ahead and post. Etc., etc.

      Non Official Family Members:
You're going to be waiting a while. At least an hour and a half by my calculations. If you'd still like to be part of the family, be a decent person and wait it out.

In the event that Celtic shows up spam-a-blazin':
Get your post in as quick as possible.

      Comic Book Movies Madness!!!!
      How To Play:
Using the below brackets, select which movie you think will win and head to head match up. Continuing filling out the brackets until you have chosen a National Champion, and by National Champion I mean a Comic Book Movies Champion!!! Once everyone has made their picks and posted their brackets, I’ll begin releasing the winning movies for the round. Yes that’s right I already know who’s one. I have meticulously rack the minds of some of the family for what movies they like, while also seeking outside independent votes from qualified Canadians, err I mean candidates. So that’s let’s you know just how scientific the results will be. And what does the winner get? All my mods, which as of right now stands at 6, though by the time this is over I’m sure I’ll have seven. Though not required I would like to see the family contribute some mods to who ever has the winning entry, family member or not. So if there are no questions, let the games begin!!!! And if there are questions ask and I’ll do my best to explain it. And I know Erok will help as he knows all about the March Madness! Also I’ve linked a journal for any questions you may have but I’ll also be posting the winners for anyone who doesn’t wan to read through 4.5 million posts to find which are the winning movies. Scoring will be as follows, The first round you get the seed of your choice, if you pick a 2 to beat a 5 you get 2 points, but if you pick a 5 to beat a 2 and they do you get five points. The following rounds each correct answer will get two points, and then four points, 8 points for correct Final Four selections, 10 points for to two movies to make it to the championships, and 25 for the correct winning movie. Now are there any questions?!?
