This is an amazing album. I'm almost done listening to it straight through twice. I think Pitchfork was pretty competent with their review of it, so I'm going to steal some excerpts:

Maybe no one told Clap Your Hands Say Yeah that first impressions are important. Or maybe they've just got massive sack. Either way, their self-released, self-titled debut CD opens with the weirdest, most potentially grating bit of snake-oil salesmanship you're likely to hear until Tom Waits puts out another record. I happen to dig the song, entitled "Clap Your Hands!" (a theme is emerging), but a maniacal carny barking over a stuttering calliope isn't for everyone. Those who persevere, though, will quickly discover that this garish foyer gives out onto spacious, elegant chambers of clean lines and soft lights.
The record is consistently, remarkably strong, but "The Skin of My Yellow Country Teeth" in particular stands out, with its richly buzzing synth phrases, textbook Modest Mouse guitar lead (a trebly, gliding string bend skimming over the rhythm like a flat stone over a pond), contrapuntal bass, and shuffling drums. The song also features one of vocalist Alec Ounsworth's most memorable performances: He ramps up the urgency as the heavier chords kick in, his voice cracking and shifting in cascading waves as if someone were pressing his vocal cords to a fret board and bending them. "Is This Love?", with its clean, galloping guitars and fruit loop synth trills is the song most blatantly redolent of Neutral Milk Hotel (especially of the unhinged pop and careening vocals Mangum favored on On Avery Island), and its dizzily wowing vocal harmonies carry over to "Heavy Metal", where fuzzed-out bass and wheezing harmonica punch smart shapes into the fizzy guitars.

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah (87 mb)

      Enjoy.

Kaiser Cheifs lay out fierce, moving UK indie rock. If there's any fault to their debut release, it's a lack of emotional variation. The tempo and harmonies are shifted up with adequate differentation, but every track has a very strong, in-your-face presentation that might get stale by the end of the album. Overall, however, there are some great tracks on here, and some terribly catchy tunes. My favorites are "Na Na Na" and "Oh My God." Encoded at 320kbps, because I'm a freak like that.

      Employment (99 mb)

So, I'm done with finals. My performance was questionable, but I know I aced my art class, so I don't really give a shit whether I have a proficiency in Dionysian Cultism or my conclusions about Aquinas' view of Eternal Law take into account his theological rewrite of Aristotle's Politics.

      I fucking hate general education.

I've decided to attend two shows every month, and get three or four albums every week, to feed my insatiable appetite for new music. So far I'm doing pretty good- I saw Our Lady Peace, Foo Fighters, Kaiser Cheifs, and Weezer in October, Coltrane Motion, Relient K, MXPX, Andrew Bird, and Dosh in November, and I'm set to see Awesome Cool Dudes tomorrow. I'm seriously considering dragging some people to see Wolf Parade on New Years' if we end up just sitting around and drinking.

I'd be worried about the long term hearing loss I might be incurring, but I figure that by the time I'm forty, bionic ears will replace the weak, flabby tubes I use to perceive sound now. I'll have an equalizer installed in my forehead so I can boost the bass when I'm listening to the oldies station, which I assume will play Notorious B.I.G. and Opeth.

EDIT- Holy shit, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah is SO GOOD. Expect more music this morning.

So I just got back from Providence yesterday after partying with Nesnora all weekend. She has excellent taste in revelry.

We toured RISD, which has to be the best campus I've ever visited. Everything is old and collegiate. Just walking around the studio buildings made me want to get a tweed coat and discuss some fucking Nietzsche.

I saw Secratary, which is an amazingly dark and hilarious movie. It does, however, require a finely tuned sense of perversion.

On sunday night we went up to Boston and had dinner with Nico, who isn't nearly as French as you'd think. Between the delicious food and engaging conversation, I completely forgot about getting back to Providence for my flight out. Heather drove from Boston to the Providence airport in less than an hour, which is generally unheard of. Alas, I arrived at the check-in desk the same time my plane was taking off. At this point Heather was so tired of me I was forced to sleep at the airport, where I was violated by a baggage handler.

      Nah, not really.

I have to give Southwest some credit here. I've never thought much of their airline, but all the employess I encountered were very helpful and nice, and they transferred me to the next flight out for free. That's good business, man. Heather put me up for another night, and then drove me to the airport at dark-fucking-o'clock.

In an act of laziness and defiance, I don't have a single picture of the entire weekend. I left Providence with a RISD hoodie, a t-shirt another tenant mixed in with Heather's wash, a custom Craig Mullins poster, and a finer appreciation for The Twilight Zone. Of course, now I owe Heather into eternity. You should let me know if you need a liver or something. I think I have a couple of those.

      All shirts mailed.*

Dan's order is forfeit. That means there is one XL t-shirt available.
DeadParrot has first dibs, followed by, uh...

Fuck it, fight to the death for it. The survivor will wipe blood from his face with a soft, 100% cotton Gildan Activewear.

      * Except BlackViper, who assures me money is on the way.

Shipping to the UK cost $7+ now.
Did I profit making these shirts? NEGATIVE.

EDIT: I don't know why everyone is saying "old" to that graphic from the last journal.
I just fucking made that last night to explain my usage of the term.

Some of you are feeling the gonads and strife of not being first to receive your shirt.

Most likely, if your package didn't come yet then it was over 13 ounces, and went out as Standard Mail rather than First Class letter parcel. That means it's going to take longer. I don't really know how much longer, but any day now I'm sure a bundle of shirtnesses will show up on your doorstep.

I'm sorry to the Snow Mexicans and Limeys that your packages have taken so long to get out. Like I said before, I'm kind of a busy guy during the week. Also, I noticed Taketoshi commenting that he hadn't gotten a package yet, and ended up finding it set aside with the people who haven't paid. Sorry about that dude, I'll send it with whatever the faster type of mail is ASAP.

I'm not running this thread "like a nazi camp," I'm following the fucking rules. This thread has been around longer than most of you have even been members, let alone contributors. They've had to lock previous iterations of this thread because it wouldn't stop "doing its own thing."

As an aside, I loathe the use of WWII rhetoric to describe someone regarded as authoritarian, especially if it's used improperly. While the Nazi government was a fascist regime that bullied its own citizens, concentration camps weren't always run with strict guidelines and policy. Rather, through starvation, inhumanity, and random murder, the camps broke the will of prisoners until only the semblance of authority was enough to keep them in line.

If you're going to callously use the genocide of 14 million people to illustrate my use of mod points, you might get your fucking analogy straight first.

      Truce.

Just to let you know, I meant no insult to you in the slightest way. However, I think you took my comment a little too seriously. I was not the one who came up with it. It was a borrowed term. Surely, you understood that I was trying to say that things were trying to be run too strictly.

That aside, I am not trying to start a war on RvB. I did not realize the the thread had been closed in the past for people getting off topic, and I appologize for contributung to it in any way. From now on, I'll just post art and that is it. Sorry to cause a problem.

Yeah, as far as I can tell, she says:
"Yes no dochira de mo nai koto mo aru deshoo," which would be something like "Aren't there times when it isn't either 'yes' or 'no'?"
