    • A Tribute to a True Hero

      EagleMan B. Sc, B. Ed

I always found it odd that in DC, Superman, an alien to the planet, is the country and the world's greatest hero. Here I would like to take the time to mention another alien, who gave up everything he knew for Marvel's Earth. Meet Z'Reg, Crusader. Recent recruit to the Initiative, and closet Skrull.

He was trained by the best, and sent to the Earth to spy on the Avengers before the Invasion. Unfortunately for the Skrulls, he arrived after the Avengers had disbanded (see Avengers: Disassembled), and became enamoured with the glamours lives of the superhero. Taking the human name "Aubrey Thompson," and using his military training, he became the "human" hero known as "Crusader."

After some time of "heroing," Crusader became the mentor of an aspiring hero named "Freedom Ring," whose powers came from a reality-altering ring created from a fragment from a cosmic cube, granting him the ability to change anything he wished within a 15 foot radius. After the death of Freedom Ring, Crusader took possession of the ring, giving him a new range of powers. At this time, the Super Human Registration Act (SHRA) went into effect, and Crusader registered with the government, who did not know of his Skrull heritage.

During his training in the Initiative, Crusader noticed Yellowjacket (Henry "Hank" Pym) acting strangely, and upon investigation, uncovered a plot to invade the Earth. Already uncertain about revealing his true self, Crusader knew that announcing that he was a Skrull now would certainly get him killed, or at the least, imprisoned. In fear of being discovered, he unfortunately misleads 3D-Man, who was tracking the Skrulls in the Initiative, but eventually joins the big name heroes in the final battle in Central Park.

Torn between the two sides, Crusader remembers his training on the Skrull homeworld, and eventually comes face-to-face with his best friend from training. After being offered a nice spot in the Skrull army, and witnessing the death of fellow Initiative recruit, Proton, Crusader renounced his Skrull heritage, proclaiming the Earth as his home and promising to do whatever it took to keep it safe. And he did his job well.

During the battle, the Skrull Yellowjacket escapes to warn others of the defeat of their Queen, and to give the order to activate energy pylons which would send America into the Negative Zone. While members of the Initiative disable the pylons, Crusader follows the Skrull Pym and defeats him.

However, shortly after this large victory, Crusader was shot in the head from behind by 3D-Man because he was a Skrull. Unfortunately, due to the number of heroes that were replaced, the was a lot of mistrust, so no one questioned his actions.

As he lay dying, he spoke the words "I wish it could've ended differently," and disappeared. Where has he gone? Will he be back? How did the ring interpret what he said? No one knows.

There is no doubt to anyone who knows his story, that Crusader was a person that loved the Earth and America, his new home. He fought hard for its freedom when all seemed dark and gave up everything that he knew for a place that didn't know him. Crusader was a great hero who was killed unfairly, solely based on his origins. It is my hope that Crusader and his story will be remembered forever. He will be missed.

    • TV and Movies Update

      EagleMan B. Sc, B. Ed

Okay, so I've been watching too much TV and seeing too many movies lately. Luckily, a friend of mine works at a theater, so some of them have been free.

So, let's start with TV (spoilers may follow - you've been warned):

House (last week): wow. That wasn't awkward in several places at all.</sarcasm> Great episode, and I think they captured the emotions of the mother and Cuddy pretty well, but it was pretty predictable with the baby living and the mother wanting to keep the baby. And I'm interested to see how long this "relationship" with House lasts.

Chuck: a) that chick was pretty hot. b) That episode was pretty much genius. And I can't believe that she now knows about Chuck (and people actually called him Agent Carmichael). And what's with him NOT driving stick? I think that learning to drive a manual car should be a requirement to getting your licence. And Morgan is hilarious. He always gets the short end of the stick. And Sarah's totally jealous.

But what bugs me is that they didn't go into why the virus guy was CIA. They'd better mention it next episode.

And for all you Americans (and others) out there, the biochemist's name, Guy LaFleur, is the name of a great hockey player from (most famously) the Montreal Canadiens.

Heroes: WOAH! MIND = BLOWN! I love it when they have a huge complicated story and then they tie it ALL together. Wow. So, Claire's mom is the one that caused the train wreck that Claire ran into in the first season. Noah gets into Suresh's taxi after Peter leaves, after screwing up Sylar. Elle had contact with Sylar before anyone else, and basically forced him to be evil.

But did anyone else notice that Elle seemed much more mentally stable here than she does later? I wonder what made her go loopy later on. I think Sylar catches up to her at some point.

And Hiro's getting his powers taken away? Maybe this is part of what leads to his being killed by Ando. Maybe he becomes Ando's sidekick when Ando gets powers. So does Mr. Petrelli have telepathy or the power sucking abilities? Or does he somehow have both? I'm confused.

Overall, great episode. Season 3 is really good!

And in terms of movies, I saw "Role Models" today. It was HILARIOUS! It was odd, because it was a feel-good comedy, with a bit of romantic comedy thrown in, but also had a lot of action in it. And it wasn't lame, tacked on action, it was woven into the story, it was well choreographed, it was fun, and it was exciting. I highly recommend it. There's a lot of swearing, and a bit of nudity (including guy butt), so be aware in case you're sensitive to that kind of stuff.

Basically these two guys get into legal trouble and are forced to do community service with a "Big Brothers" type organization. One is assigned to this out of control, loud and foul-mouthed kid, and the other is assigned to a LARPing nerd teen. Very touching, and, of course, you know that everything will work out in the end, but it's still a good watch. KISS fans will enjoy it a lot too.

The best part/character of the movie is the lady that owns/runs the organization. She's an fast-talking, ex-alcoholic, ex-druggie who doesn't seem all that stable in the head. I cracked up every time she spoke! No joke. And there were several laugh out loud moments too.

      Go see it. Seriously.

    • M-Day: The Other Rememberance Day

      EagleMan B. Sc, B. Ed

Well, it's been 3 years, and what's happened to the X-Men? More have died or lost their abilities and more have been discovered to have kept their powers. But the biggest pieces of news are as follows:

      1) The invading Skrulls were present for House of M, and almost killed Scarlet Witch themselves. The Decimation that occurred on M-Day actually helped the plans of the Skrulls, as they had much less opposition to deal with when the time came.

      2) A new mutant was born. This mutant is rumoured to make or break the future. This child was sought out by several parties, including the X-Men and Sinister's Marauders. During the ensuing battle, Sinister was killed by Mystique, Rogue was severely injured by Mystique, Bishop turned evil and shot Professor X, and Cable kidnapped the baby and fled to the future.

Sinister had a failsafe to activate DNA and memory implants in several former colleagues including Sebastian Shaw and Charles Xavier. Ultimately, they defeated his plan, leading all to believe he's gone for good. However, a new, female known as Miss Sinister (Claudine Renko) has joined Shaw as the usurpers of the new Hellfire Club.

Bishop discovered that the survival of this new mutant would cause his future to come to pass - mutants outlawed, caged and branded - and felt the only course of action was to kill the baby himself. Severely injuring Forge, Bishop and Cable get into a fight, which resulted in Xavier being mortally wounded, Bishop losing his right arm, and Cable fleeing to the future. Bishop stole a bionic arm from Forge and followed Cable to the future, damaging Cable's time device so that he can only travel forward in time. The child now appears to be about 1 year old.

After being shot, Xavier was rescued and healed by Fabien Cortez and the remaining Acolytes (including his legs). Then, Magneto helped repair his mind, waking him up, but Xavier had few memories. Magneto helped restore a few, but Xavier is now on a mission to discover who he was (arrogant and controlling), and more importantly, who he is now (see X-Men: Legacy).

      3) The X-Men move to San Fransisco. After the destruction of the school during a fight with the Marauders, Cyclops closed down the school and disbanded the X-Men. Shortly after, they relocated to San Fransisco, CA where they were welcomed, and with the help of Warren Worthington III (Angel), founded a new group of X-Men who would help the police in "supernatural" or "odd" cases in addition to the normal mutant relations and affairs.

      4) Cyclops creates a Black Ops team. After the events in Manifest Destiny, Cyclops realizes that there are some things that need to be handled in an extreme way, not in an X-Men way. So he calls in Wolverine to create a Black Ops mutant group to perform these tasks. This group consists of Wolverine, X-23, Warpath, and Wolfsbane. With the exception of Wolverine, the rest have essentially disappeared as far as anyone else is concerned. During their first mission against the Purifiers, who saw M-Day as a sign from God to take the offence, Angel was attacked, and it was discovered that Apocalypse's influence still plagued Warren, turning him into Death once again. Now whenever he gets angry, he transforms once more into Archangel.

They have sure come a long way in three years, and they show no signs of stopping. It's interesting to see how these events stem directly from M-Day in some form, and you have to wonder how much the writers had planned at the time.

Please have a moment of silence for the mutants who lost their powers and/or died as a result of M-Day in 2005.

PS: Unless Scott is seeing things, Madeline Pryor is back!

      1) So, last night (Wednesday night, by the time I post this) I went to Video Games Live here in Vancouver at the Orpheum theatre. Now, I've been there several times, so the venue was nothing new. Anyway, I dressed up as Red Mage from Final Fantasy III and 8-Bit Theatre, got into my car and drove downtown. I parked the car and walked to the Orpheum, and when I got there, the lady said I had to leave my flimsy, plastic sword with her because it was "a weapon." Now, I hadn't been inside yet, so I complied, thinking that they did this for everyone. I was wrong.

I walk inside, and take a look around at all the video game exhibits. They have Wiis and PS3s for demo, plus a Rock Band 2 competition. They had several big name sponsors such as Future Shop (like Best Buy) and EA Games, which is a far cry from the last time they were here in 2005 (for their 3rd show ever). Then, as I'm walking around, I see a White Mage who is holding a staffish-sword-thing. And I see a bunch of people with Kendo swords. And I see people with other swords that are part of their costumes. Now I feel ripped off. Anyway, I enter the costume contest, get a little glowy pendant thing, and take some pictures with random strangers.

At this time, it was time to line-up for the contest and all of us in costume are lead to the front of the theatre for preliminary judging. Shortly thereafter, we were escorted on stage for final judging. Imagine my surprise when I was picked for the top 5! Sweet! No prizes for that, though. Didn't win, but had fun. I saw my other friend Eric, from school, in the crowd, but never actually met up with him.

Then I went and took my seat with my friend Ken, also from school. The show was about to start.

I was really awesome and featured great orchestral arrangements of some classics, such a brief history of games through the ages (starting with Pong), and a Mario medley. They also played Gods of War, Civ 4, FFVII, and many others. My favourites were The Legend of Zelda medley, the Super Mario medley, and Halo. I'll upload some video soon, but in the mean time, here are some pictures:
      IMG_0817.jpg
A guy from the audience got to play pong live on screen while the orchestra played the music. The catch? He wore a shirt with the ship on it and was being motion-tracked across the stage. That's right, he was in the game. Fun and hard.

      IMG_0830.jpg
A friend of mine, and his father, were part of the choir: The Contata Singers Choir.

      IMG_0832.jpg
The Vancouver Symphony Orchestra with The Contata Singers Choir performing, I believe, Halo 2.

      IMG_0836.jpg
      The End.

During the intermission I hooked up with Aaron (Fungster) and Caitlin (CuteyKitty), and Aaron's friend Philip. Dom (Count3d) was supposedly there, but I never saw him. After the concert, Ken, Aaron, Caitlin, Philip and I waited in line to meet some of the performers, including local group Splitting Adam, and a lady who performed several pieces on the piano, and she was AMAZING! She even played the "hurry up" version of the Super Mario World music, complete with stride playing with her left hand! Finally, met Tommy Tallarico, one of the founders of VGL, and had a quick chat and a picture (where's the pic, Aaron?), and then we parted ways.

      EDIT: Here it is!
      n502521487_1986069_2386.jpg

We were bugging Caitlin about having to take the Skytrain home by herself and the possibility of being mugged or killed. Nice, huh? But she was fine. Public transit isn't really that bad. Go send her a message letting her know you're glad she's okay!

      2) Thundercats! I've already shown some of you this picture:
      Liono.jpg

Here's what my brother, from AnimatedSuperheroes.com had to say about it:

Yeah, i remember hearing about this a few years ago. It was all
hearsay and I don't think anything ever made it to reality. There was
speculation that Lion-O was the leader of rock band.

Warner Bros is making a CGI Thundercats movie set for 2010.

So there you go. It was pretty much just concept art. I'm looking forward to the CGI one, though.

      3) Reconstruction #19! The final chapter. Wow. Excellent end to an excellent series. The last line was the best. While they pretty much said it several times earlier, just hearing it come from the mouth of the director made me wet my pants! Well, not really, but almost.

Did you notice Caboose during the Epilogue? It looks like he's trying to resurrect Tex or something.

And what about Church? He still claimed he was a ghost, but he's definitely the Alpha, so does he survive?

I hope the next series is a direct continuation of this. And no, there's still no Tucker. Suck it up, fanboys (and girls).

Chuck: Good episode. Really well done, but I saw that ending coming a mile away.
*ahem* Her dad is arrested, so instead of finding out what's going on, she automatically digs in the exact spot to find the box of money. That doesn't say "Emergency," it screams "Contingency." I was pretty sure there was something else going on. Although, I didn't expect the wife to be the mastermind.

Heroes: My brother is struggling with this season because he thinks that all the characters have changed too much in the first few episodes that they're not the characters that we enjoy anymore (except Parkman, the only person we wanted to change), but I think that they many of them needed to change in order to be used again. Nikki - we were getting sick of the mirror thing. Nathan - he couldn't keep going ahead with revealing the supers - it would undermine the story and ruin it. Maya - she was annoying, etc.

The one person that really needed to change, and has, is Peter. He was too powerful, so they needed to do something to correct it, and there are only two ways to do that. 1) Give him a flaw, 2) Take away his powers. They did the first by having him take Sylar's ability, causing him to have this debilitating craving. They did the second in the last episode by taking away his powers.

The one change that I didn't really expect is Suresh. His was kind of a sudden change without much prompting. Even from before he injected himself - when he had sex with Maya. Very out of character.

Wolverine and the X-Men: Good episode with Hulk. Kinda a sequel to the upcoming Hulk vs. Wolverine D2V out soon (I know, it's weird). Are there any torrents out for you Americans (and others) yet?

      House: Still hilarious!
"Once again, a life is saved thanks to girl-on-girl action"
      "If you're happy, I'm..."

    • Comic Rant and Other Comments (Spoilers)

      EagleMan B. Sc, B. Ed

So, as we approach another M-Day (in about a month), I realized that they've been getting rid of more and more mutants ever since! Just look at Cable. You may not think his new book is exciting, but it's well written. But then you think about it, they've just written out two popular characters:

      1) Cable can only move forward in time - he's stuck in the future, never to return.
      2) even if he does somehow return, he'll be an old grandpa from years of the future, in no shape to be an active member. He's already looking wrinkly and creaky.
      3) Bishop will never be that mega-villain that is remembered and used forever (like Magneto).

If you look at it this way, it seems that the writers are trying to get rid of these characters. Cable, as mentioned, either won't return or won't be a good enough character anymore to be in a comic. And Bishop - everyone hates him now and even if he claimed to have changed, they'll never trust him or let him back on the team, plus he only has one arm. Now he'll just fade into obscurity and the people who remember him will think of him as the biggest jerk.

It's too bad. These were two brilliant characters with so much potential, and now they're pretty much on a dead end street and we're just waiting to get to the end of it.

But it's not just Cable! What's going on in comics these days???

Cap: Of course they miscarried Sharon Carter's baby. They're afraid to have Cap's kid running around. Too bad. It would be pretty interesting to see what came of it in a few years (although Franklin Richards is still 10).

FF: If you've seen any of the promo art for the next issue, you know that this story is called "the Death of Sue Richards." If you've read the newest issue, I certainly hope you found this even slightly predictable. While I didn't guess when the nanny first applied, I realized that she was Sue pretty quickly in this issue. First, she and Valeria knew each other. Second, They'd never really kill Sue. They already tried that once but it turned out to be an alternate future. And third, Hulk Jr. wasn't the person in charge ("she" is). And then, if you still hadn't guessed, she talks to Reed in a very familiar way and has access codes to the Baxter Building. Hmm...and still several pages to the reveal.

I've already said some of this in the Secret Invasion thread, so I'll summarize it:
Nova: Nova, Darkhawk, Quasar. Three under appreciated characters, and three of my favourites. That's right, Quasar's magically back from the dead, somehow thanks to Nova.
SI: Spider-Man: Another example of the bad writing since BND. Spider-Man does a Deadpool-esque 4th wall recap of the first issue, even though he wasn't in it. He's not in the second one either, and Jackpot and crew just run away the whole time. Then a Goblin rip-off shows up.
Black Panther: (exception) REALLY well written. Best single tie-in issue of Secret Invasion!
New Avengers: I don't really see how the Skrulls were important in House of M. They were disoriented, then they were beaten to the punch by the rest of the heroes. Nothing happens.

It just seems like the last two weeks haven't been that good. Maybe next week will be better.

In other news, I'm still confused about the Red Hulk. Please leave your thoughts.

So, due to some kind of disagreement with my dad's company and their web host, the site is no longer at ".ca", but at ".net". This means that my email address is now .net. And that means that I have to email everybody to tell them, and find every site that I log in to and change it. WHAT A HASSLE! ARGH! I'll start tomorrow.

I don't think he was back to normal. He didn't take any vicodin and he was actually pretty chill and nice to people this episode. I liked it, to be honest. Surprisingly.

Yeah I doubt they'll change House too much, I think there are ways they can change him in small ways that can be good for the character. I mean if you look at House season one and two, he was more eccentric and sharp tongued than mean and depressed. He was more about the cases then proving everyone wrong and being a douchebag. I think over time they've made him harsher because they thought that was what people liked about him, but it also took away his essential humanity.

No one wants to see House become a big bucket of love all of a sudden. He can still be the acerbic doctor who cares about the case more than the patient, but maybe they can help develop his personal relationships a tiny bit more. Wilson and his friendship was more charming in the beginning and less like an abusive enabling relationship. Having him appreciate the people he can care for is a good step, one that humanizes him and yet can give him the freedom to still mess around.

I don't mind some development for him, and I know what they're afraid of, but I think they can do it. And I think they should try!

You were right, haha, I meant to bring that back 'more on that later' when I was talking about how many stories were just tossed aside after a few episodes, but I didn't refer specifically to it again. Thanks for the catch.

yeah i know what you mean but as long as they're better than the very first Fantastic Four movie that got canned after they finished filming it or the Dolph Lungdren Punisher movie the properties will be okay.

Dunno. I'm told one of them has a big yellow glitch in the sky, it's apparently been there a while, you'd think someone would fix it.

Nono, what I meant was what was your local time now? ie; So I can figure out when to listen on mondays. ie; set a second clock on my computer tracking your local time. Like, unless I miss my mark, it's midnight where you are now, therefore it'll be 3pm on monday, my time, when I can next stream it live.

Don't panic much, I've got it under some kind of control :D

Yeah, I saw the catch-up, the episode they last played is one I heard aaaages ago but don't have on my computer anymore. I've read the script though.

Nice. I know there was a local radio station down here that often played the goons but they tended to do it at insane times, 5am or some such. Not sure why either, I'm sure there was a reason, it may not have been a good reason.

I think I'll have to look into streaming them when they air those tracks. What's the local time over there? I'm guessing 11:30 wednesday or have I guessed the wrong timezone?

Awesome. Finally got the chance to download em, four episodes I haven't heard before... though I think I've read the script of the christmas pudding episode. My goons collection is shamefully small too. The BBC's practices of erasing tapes back in that era was ridiculously stupid.

Yeah. Vintage radio shows are always good stuff. I like alot of what they tried to do and were able to pull off just on radio alone. The Goon show from the fifties was always my favourite. The shit they did and got away with. It's mostly impossible these days because someone would get offended.

thanks, the comic shop is in another town and i do not want to go there every week. i cannot get a sub for i have had two and had to cancel on short notices. the other one i canceled and never came back but they were not really a good in getting comics in. Both shops had a ten percent discount, i believe.

I probably will go ahead and use both. I will use one for this month only. I see your point on variants and desperatly need to stay away from them. I need to face the fact i really cannot afford comics but then again i am prone to reptition. Do you think that was a good price for those comics?

    • humbledone

Quick question if you do not mind...

I am in a fix between buying comics for two different online stores.

One place, i can have them come bi weekly at fiftten or more percent off plus i can get variants also.

The other place, i can get them at thirty to thirty-seven percent off but have to wait till the next month to get them. I cannot get any variants at all. Example, eleven comics for 26 to round up nearest dollar then add cheapest shipping and get them in August.

I am at a stand still for sure...sadness eguals madness...
