On everything I missed while I was away. Luckily, I have the rest of this week off, so it shouldn't be too hard. I have to go buy some comics, though.

So, I'm almost finished wading through all the new journals and images, and just remembered (due to Data's journal) that I have a couple episodes of Retcast to listen to. I'll also be watching the new Reconstruction in a bit too. And Dr. Horrible is available in Canada now, so I'll have to watch that.

DevDay: MORE IMAGES! I'll have to upload some. Maybe some from my trip, maybe some more from CanWest.

Alert Status - Here's what I have left:

Comic Book Movies IV: The Retconning [ 5500 new replies ]

Only 96 replies in T&D? What's with that? And I probably won't be reading the Luke thread. It's probably all about sex and crazy off topic stuff. LIke CBM, but less interesting. I'll try to read all the CBM stuff, but I'll limit what I reply to. SI thread won't be touched until I catch up on all my books.

Another thing: Last time I went on a trip I complained about how bad the Dallas/Fort Worth airport was. This time, it's the Frankfurt airport.
      11565.plan_terminal_hochformat_cdp01.jpg
Our plane landed and we were shuttled to an E gate, and our next flight (in 30 minutes) was at an A gate. Now, due to some earlier confusion, we also had to pick up our new boarding passes. So, 10 minutes later, we had them and had to pass through customs before we could go to our gate.

Now, looking at the map, I can see that there is some kind of "Skyrail" thing that goes between the terminals, which goes on the list of stupid things because there weren't any signs about this, and I didn't even see the tracks. Anyway, the gate we arrived in was at the very end of the E terminal, so you have to walk all the way to the other side of that and into the main building and go through customs to get back to a "secure" area. Then you go down 3 floors to an underground level and through a very long underground tunnel, then back up three floors to where the gates are. Then we found out that our gate was the LAST one at the end of the A terminal, so we had to walk all the way to the far side of the A terminal. It's pretty ridiculous.

Anyway, I had a great time in France, and met some really cool people, and went to a conference in Germany, which was good. I'm not really looking forward to going back to work, but I'm also not looking forward to having no money.

    • Juno and Batman

      EagleMan B. Sc, B. Ed

So, I saw Juno the other night, and this is all I really have to say about it:
      1) really good movie. Ellen Page is awesome...and Canadian.
      2) I wasn't a fan of the music. It got boring after a while.
      3) Their references were pretty good, except for one. When she's about to go into labour, she shouts to her dad, "Thundercats are go!" This is a combination of the 80s "Thundercats, Ho!" and the 60s "Thunderbirds are go!" However, you get an A for effort.

I also saw Batman (not on the same night), and that was really good. Heath Ledger is by far the best Joker EVER! I don't know if he deserves an Oscar for it, but he definitely deserves a nomination. He was twisted, he was cruel and sadistic; from his first moment on screen, Ledger's performance stole the show. It was perfect. Harvey was awesome - the character, the CG, and the acting were perfect. And Maggie did a much better job than Katie.

And the scheming! Man, what schemes on all sides - Batman, Joker, Dent, Gordon...EVERYONE!

Now, I'll probably get negged for saying this, but while I thought it was an awesome movie, I'd have to say it'd definitely NOT the best Comic Book Movie. I still think that's Iron Man. Sure, Batman had awesome acting, story, and special effects, but there were a few things that bugged me, and for some reason, it just didn't feel like a comic book.

      Things that bugged me:
      1) Alfred's accent. I said this with "Begins", and I'll say it again. Alfred is supposed to come from a long line of Wayne Butlers, and should have the accent of an upper class Brit.

      2) Alfred's motivational speeches. I felt that they watered down the Batman character. It's like Bruce couldn't do anything without an "Alfred Pep Talk." He had no confidence and no drive to be Batman.

      3) They didn't play up the detective angle of Batman. Again, it seemed that Alfred did most of the thinking in the movie.

      4) The Joker wore make up. I can over look this from the movie perspective, but for this to be the best CBM, it would have had to be the chemical accident.

      5) Bale's "Batman voice." It sounded like he was sick the whole time. Too raspy. It was severely annoying after a while. Just a deeper voice would have done nicely.

That's pretty much it. Go see it if you haven't. Feel free to comment here, but I'll be away for the next couple weeks so may not reply right away.

Okay, I don't normally do these things, but since ManiacMidget tagged me specifically, I'll do it. I'm gonna borrow a few because they're eerily similar, and still interesting.

Write 10 completely random things about yourself and then tag 8 more people. You can't tag people back, but let me know when you post your blog.

      1) I own an 80GB ipod because I prefer putting every scrap of music I own on it so I always have it all and I don't have to decide which songs to put on it.
      2) My first comic book was FF #358, where they discover that Alicia Masters Storm is really the Skrull, Lyja.
      3) When it comes to video games I NEVER use the block option...I just can't be bothered. In RPGs, I'm usually the meatshield.
      4) Over the years, for Halloween, I have dressed up as characters including, but not limited to Cyclops, Negaduck, Red Mage, and Mr. Fantastic. (My brother has Joker and Two-Face costumes)
      5) My favourite group is Rockapella. Go listen now!
      6) I completed a degree in Computer Science (programming), and actually did in in 4 years, too!
      7) In grade 5, my family moved into a new house. The girl that used to live there still hasn't forgiven me for "stealing her house."
      8) I have a collection of 453 Television Theme Songs from all ages and genres. It's actually pretty interesting.
      9) I love playing games. Cards, board games, video games, puzzles, you name it! I especially love Settlers of Catan!
      10) My cousin and I used to listen to Smash Mouth: Astro Lounge while playing Star Wars Podracer. I know every word to that album.

    • RvB CanWest!

      EagleMan B. Sc, B. Ed

So, I went to RvB CanWest yesterday, and I had a really good time. Special Guests: Jeskid, Kathleen, Geoff, and Nico.

First, we were let in late, which wasn't terrible, except that we ran out of time for Q&A at teh end - more about that later. I got to see Elnea's Pink Spartan Barbie, which was pretty much the coolest Barbie ever! I say they should be mass marketed as part of a "women's equality" kind of thing.

Once we were in, we watched a music video called "I Want Master Chief", written and performed by OboeCrazy and Elnea. It was really neat. An interesting idea.

Next up was a short animated feature by Laird called Halo: Unyielding. After a few technical difficulties, it was shown, and was also really good. You should all go and check it out. I am intrigued by all the space action and how it was done. Great story, and I look forward to the next part.

Finally, for the first half, we watched the first 6 episodes of Jeskid's feature, Drawn By Pain. To be perfectly honest, I was kind of skeptical about the concept - a girl that invented a drawn character, and sort of becomes that character - it's hard to explain, but I was very surprised. Especially by the blend of animation and live action. Just go watch it. It is obvious that a lot of thought and work was put into this. During the Q&A to follow, Jeskid explained that he has already planned out up to episode/chapter 12 (the final one), and that yes, this is all going somewhere, and yes, it will be released on DVD when it is done.

After a brief intermission, some prizes were given out (I got a magnet pack), and we watched Season 5 of RvB up to episode 97, the latest. Afterward, Nico, Kathleen, and Geoff answered some questions. Due to the initial fear-induced silence, i decided to break the ice with the ever popular "If you were a tree, what kind of tree would you be?" They graciously obliged my question, then moved on to the more important questions. The most interesting one being: "what's next?"

They were purposely unclear as to the future of Halo and the RvB cast, but Geoff has confirmed that they are currently working on a top secret project using an unnamed game; they will do at least one season or P.A.N.I.C.S; and they want to get into some live action stuff. I'm looking forward to that. (all of it, really)

Due to a lack of time, the questions were cut off there, and Nico performed an extended/improv version of Blood Gulch Blues, then we all headed down the road to the Speakeasy Restaurant/Bar for some Liquids and Solids. It's a fairly nice place, but quite expensive, especially the small sized starters. Here I got all my stuff signed, and pictures taken. Pictures should be up shortly. I even have a picture of Geoff's "next tattoo", designed by Luke McKay. Funny things happen when you're drunk.

Anyway, I got to know the folks a little bit, and I have the following to say:
      - Kathleen is really nice. It's kind of weird considering the character she plays.
      - Geoff isn't as much of a jerk as he'd like you to think.
      - Luke isn't as thin as he draws himself (he's not fat, but he has a bigger build than his fictional counterpart)
      - Jeskid's shorter than he would have you think. He's also just as strange as he would have you believe.
      - Nico, on first impression, is fairly normal. He plays a mean guitar.

Anyway, that's about it. A good time was had by all. Again, pics should be up in the next few days.

Edit: Watch out when you go to Speakeasy! They're policy is $4 for a pop w/o food, and $2.50 with food. However, even though I ordered food, they still charged me $4 for my pop! It's not worth going back to argue for $1.50, but I'll definitely watch out for that next time, or even have second thoughts about going back.

Edit, take 2: Pics are up in my Image Gallery. Yes, there are real pictures of me. I never had a reason to put up a real picture of myself until now. Enjoy!

As many of you may know, tomorrow is the 1 year anniversary of M-Day. The day when Wanda Maximoff, AKA Scarlet Witch said the three words which brought down the House of M, but would also change the lives of millions of humans all over the planet: "No More Mutants."

On this day, please remember the mutants who lost their abilities in this horrible incident, and those who were killed in the anti-mutant rioting that followed. Below are just a few of the mutants affected by M-Day. Please feel free to add more to the list. I will continue to add new names every month up until next M-Day. Please give each person their own line out of respect for what they have lost.

    • Superman Returns: SPOILERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      EagleMan B. Sc, B. Ed

So, I saw Superman Returns last night, and I have to say that it is probably the best comic book movie I have ever seen.

First off, let me tell you what I didn't like:
Lois had a kid. Lois is not the kind of person to have a kid because she's to wrapped up in her work. In the comics, Lois and Clark have been married for years, and have barely mentioned thinking about kids. The worst part is that the kid is actually a Superkid. One thing that they have discussed in the comics and in Adv. of Lois & Clark is whether or not a Kryptonian and a Human could reproduce. I'm not sure about the comics, but in AoL&C they were not able to have children. I think that had a basis from the coimcs.

Second, Jonathan Kent is dead. This isn't major, especially since he's died a couple times in the comics, but as it stands now, he is alive, and I think the family reunion would have been better his Dad was there.

Three questionable parts in the movie: Why wasn't Lois dead after being thrown around in the plane, yet hurt badly when that thug flipped her? How come things rebooted after the EMP? They should not have any data (ie: O/S) after that. And how come Lois' finger didn't snap off when she dragged it in the water while they were flying? They must have been going really slow.

Finally, for the ages of Clark and Lois, I think everyone was reletively too old. Especially Jimmy. Jimmy almost looks almost older than Clark. It's like casting Chris O'Donnell as Robin to Christian Bale's Batman (I really hope not). They look too close in age. I think that since they picked a young Lois and Clark, that the rest of the cast should have been a bit younger too to keep the relative ages truer.

Now on to the good stuff:
The special effects were awesome (except for about 3 places, but you can't have everything). They used a wide range of his powers, and each had a unique effect that accurately represented them. I just wish that they showed his weakness near Kryptonite more visually or physically. Basically, you only see him sweat, then he's getting the snot kicked out of him. I would have liked to see some pain, or green veins like in Smallville. All actors played their parts very well, the plot was really good, no cheesy dialogue, great attention to detail (except for the aforementioned bits). The way they used the same fortress of Solitude from the other movies was good, and how they re-cut the Jor-El footage and worked it in was neat. The score was awesome! No pop music or rap/hip-hop. Fully orchestral, and they even kept the original theme! That was the highlight of the movie for me, seeing the opening credits then hearing the powerful John Williams theme start up!

Kate Bosworth did a very good job of Lois, capturing her emotions; torn between her new love and old love; her struggle with her love and hate for Superman and the pent up anger; treating Clark like a nobody.

I thought the actor that played Jimmy did an excellent job too. He was excited and energetic, anxious and annoying. He reminded me of a young Martin Short, but that's okay in this role.

Kevin Spacey was an excellent choice for Lex. He definitely showed Lex's darker side, but they seemed to abandon his good philanthropist facade. I guess 5 years of jail will do that to you. However, I feel he showed a little too much emotion at times. Lex is usually able to keep his cool except in the most extreme cases, and he was very good at playing this for the most part. Just in a few places I think he let it slip a bit too much. One example is in his last scene, I don't think that Lex would be pacing and throwing things and yelling. He would sit quietly, looking stoic, then he could still deliver the same line, but say it with anger a passion without shouting. But, I did like how he always had his thugs do the work. He never did anything unless absolutely necessary, or when it came to Superman himself. I can understand him conning that old lady because that's something he had to do himself to get his fortune back, and beating Superman because of his hatred for him. Everything else he kept his hands out of. Well played.

Brandon Routh surprised me. I really liked his SUperman. He had the Christopher Reeve Clark Smile, had a good voice for it, and has a lot of both Tom Welling and Christopher Reeve mannerisms, bringing the best two Supermen together. He even looks like Chris Reeve as Clark. His flying was infinitely better than Storm in X3. He was way more comfortable with it, leaning over and standing up and flying without shaking. He was also the confident, strong Superman, but the bumbling, nervous Clark. He played the Clark/Superman dichotomy to a tee.

One other thing that surprised me was the Superman Returns Prequel comic miniseries. It fills in the details of the 5 years that he was gone, and each one focusses on a different character, seeing where they are right before the movie, and how they react when he returns. It's detailed enough to have good stories, but still does not ruin anything that you don't know already from the opening title card or the first two scenes.

    • X-Men 3: The Last Flop

      EagleMan B. Sc, B. Ed

So, I saw X3 this morning at midnight, and I have to say that it's a good movie, but a terrible X-Men movie. First of all, there were some terrible writing decisions. I'm sure you'll know what I mean when you see it. Second, there were 2 final scenes, and both of them sucked. Terrible endings. About half the special effects were good (Jean's hair made to look like it's on fire), but half were really bad (Storm's flying and lightning).

The characters with familiar names only had the names! Why even bother? If you're going to use the names, use the powers that people know! Psylocke had chameleon powers for crying out loud! Also, the accents were totally wrong. Colossus wasn't Russian, Juggernaut was Australian, and Storm has given up on an accent altogether, not that it was there much to begin with. And the guy people thought was Omega Red, wasn't. He kind of looks like him, power-wise. Juggernaut was more the Ultimate style, which looked kind of dumb.

It was good to see Moira, at least she had the right accent, and Beast was probably the best part of the movie. Multiple Man was done well (he even had his little circle-stick symbol. However, they gave Colossus the ability to spread his metal onto other people. It didn't look very good either.

I don't know how they can make another X-Men movie now. Especially a good one. I'd like to say why, but I'm trying to avoid spoilers. You'll understand when you see it. Message me if you want to discuss something with spoilers.

PS: Best line goes to Juggernaut: "Don't you know who I am?..."

      -- edit --
A couple more things. First, thank you to Chipper who pointed out that Rogue made contact with Colossus, thus taking his power. Second, they explained the Phoenix in a terrible way. Not even close to any explanation ever heard before. I even like the Ultimate X-Men - "your student is housing our messiah" explanation better. Also, the sentinel looks like an over grown action figure (except the Legends Sentinel looks way better).

Some of you may remember in my F4 review that I mentioned a friend who played one of the paramedics after Johnny crashes. Well, he was back in X3 as some military guy. In the scene where they are about to raid the Brotherhood camp, there is a wide shot of the room, and he is standing right in the middle. Way to go Paul.

Well, a friend of mine offered to fix the computers at school, cause he's more network saavy than I. And you know what? He did. When I go back to school on Tuesday (no MWF classes!), I will be all internetted up! Now I can download my RvB that I have been sadly missing, and the updates that my computer needs. The only problem is that only one computer is working because there is a problem with our router, and since no one knows the username/password to it (they've all graduated), we can't see if it's a settings problem or a hardware problem. Next step, fix the other 3 computers. Probably by buying another router, and recording the username/password for future reference (then what 's the point of a password?).

Also, my dad brought me home a new used monitor. Now I can get back to my Splinter Cell. It is brighter, which is good - it probably means it's newer - but it's kind of blurry. Oh well. The price of being able to see what you're doing. I'm going to start saving up for an LCD monitor anyway.

Well, last night I started playing Splinter Cell - great game, by the way - and the screen all of a sudden went really wide. I tried to adjust the size, but it didn't work. Then it snapped back to normal. I quit the game and started doing other work, but then the screen went really skinny, and shut off. I turned off the monitor, then turned it back on, and it was fine, but then it started to smell like burning. Kind of like solder.

Anyway, to summerize, my monitor is dead, and the computers at school cannot connect to the internet. At least I use my dad's computer for my dial-up internettedness. I think my dad is bringing me another monitor from work today. Here's hoping!

It's never farcical. I suspect that the comedic characters are the fan favorites so they're probably playing that up in the ads, but the actual show is definitely a drama the majority of the time. It's just got a nice sprinkling of comedic moments.

I think Saturday nights usually work best. Like, between 11:30 and 2:00 EST. Hopefully that's not too much trouble for you (I don't imagine it being as late at 2am, just putting out the possibility).

Those topics seem pretty good. I haven't read many comics recently, especially new ones, but I would be totally fine with you talking about it.

Billy hasn't sent me any messages, but I imagine he will talk to me about it soon. I would be very happy to talk about TV and cartoons (though, again, I don't really watch much... there are things I would like to talk about though).

I haven't seen any movies recently in theatres either, so don't worry about that. I might have a couple movies to mention in passing, but other than that it's fine.

I think AOIO would be a pretty cool topic. I have some opinions I would like to express, and I think it would be a really good point of conversation.

I don't really have any other specific topics at the moment, but I might think of some stuff. I imagine this episode will be very good. I'm looking forward to it.

It's not hypocritical. God as the eternal judge is still relevant - He cannot stand sin and decrees that sin is punishable by death (this seen in the fall of Adam and Eve). However, that is why he sent Jesus. Jesus, God's son, was sent as a perfect man - the only man without sin - who died in our place. The only person who did not deserve to die was the one that DID die in order to conquer death so that we don't have to be condemned in death. This appeases God's wrath and judgement. Thus, those that do not accept that Jesus is the one that saved them and ask for forgiveness, still carry the sentence of death, as prescribed by the judgemental God.

"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only son that whoever believes in him shall not perish, but have eternal life. For God did not send his son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him." - John 3:16-17

As for the loving things, that's always been a part of God too, in the 10 commandments. Jesus just put it in a different way. Jesus said there are two commandments - "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and soul and mind" and "Love your neighbour as yourself." If you look at the 10 commandments, the first 4 are covered by the former quotation, and the other 6 are summed up by the latter.

See? It's not hypocritical, you are just not fully informed.

Oh, I am fully informed, and am well versed in these points. I understand the christian idea of sins and forgiveness, and grossly disagree.

First off, sin. People are expected to deny themselves the basic desires and impulses because God deems them bad and watches all the time and judges us for transgressing these "sins". Why would a sentience that created this vast (13.5 billion light year visible) universe and is still worried about how a bacteria clinging to a rock orbiting a star has sex? What seems more likely? that a divine sentience cares, or that men used God to control the people through fear and guilt?

Second, Jesus was a man. That is all that can be proven. W/e else he may or may not have been relies completely on what each individual believes. The son of god can be interpreted so many different ways. I personally see Jesus as a superhero, and we are all the sons of god since we all come form his creation, this universe.

Third, the whole "saved" bit. What seems more plausible: God having a set of very unclear rules that have been misinterpreted for 2000 years, or that again, men of the time used this 'saved' bit to keep their flocks under their thumb and in control.

Thats my biggest problem w/ religion as it exist today, and those who follow it. They never look at the events from anything but the divine perspective. Most people purposefully ignore all the men, and their agendas involved in all these rules and instructions. It makes far more logical sense that men used fear and guilt, backed by interpretations of old writings to control the masses. History proves this is what happened in the Dark Ages.

i also never trust a self supporting book.

I'm not quite a regular. Ethan recognizes me but doesn't know be my name. I've only been going to Elfsar since about 5 or 6 months ago (sporadically) to pick up my pull lists and play the occasional game of heroclix. I think I know who your cousin is but I’m not sure. How many people besides Ethan work there?
I actually used to live in the kits area but always go back to “the comicshop†just because I always have. I live in New West so it’s not too far to check out Taz. Then again nowhere is too far to check out a comic shop.

Cool, I'll have to check them out. I have been going to "the Comicshop" on 4th in Kitsilano since before I could read and I have recently been going to "Elfsar" in Yaletown too. I'll have to check out Taz.
