    • Rockapella Audition

      EagleMan B. Sc, B. Ed

So, I've just applied for what is possibly my dream job. To sing with Rockapella. And before anyone asks, yes, that's the group that sang on Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego.

I've been a fan of theirs since I started watching their show. With some help, I have every album on my iPod, and my sister, who's teaching in Japan right now, just found one of their Japan Only releases. WOO!

So anyway, one of their tenors, Kevin Wright, just quit, and they decided to have open auditions. Just send links to the required files. So I took one of Rockapella's older songs and recorded all 5 parts for my audition.

Now, I'm being realistic about my chances, here. I'm not a professional singer, and they are a professional group, but I think I have a slight chance because I have the ability, I'm very musical, and I am also a vocal percussionist.

We'll see. You can't win if you don't try. And worst case scenario? I'm STILL not part of Rockapella. It's a win/not-lose situation.

Here's my audition if you want to hear it, but please don't spread it around. Thanks, and be gentle.

So, last night I went over to lukemckay's house to watch the first night of Vancouver's Celebration of Light. We watched the fireworks and also some House.

But the best part is that I met two people from the site: Noah13, and fluffsman. The funniest thing is when I met fluffsman:

Luke: "Have you met Paula before"
Me: "I think so. At CanWest."
      Fluff: "I don't think we've met before."
Luke: "I know you've met at least twice before, at CanWest."
Fluff: *gives me strange look* Sorry, but you look just like this guy that does these music videos on the site..."
      Me: "That's me."
Fluff: "Oh my gosh, it IS you. You're in, like, every one of them. I just found out about them and watched them all recently."

I like how I'm my own doppleganger. Plus, I'm now e-famous.

      PS: AOIO is awesome! smiley13.gif

PPS: Fireworks pics now on Facebook.

So, yesterday I checked my email in the morning, then went to work. When I got home, I turned on the tv and got only snow. BOO!

So I headed to my computer to rant about this on the interwebz, but alas! No internet either! AND I CAN'T COMPLAIN ABOUT IT TO EVERYONE ONLINE!!! ARGH!!!!

How frustrating is that? And, a whole day without any sort of entertainment. I'm amazed I survived.

    • RE: My Nephew (Nerd Alert!)

      EagleMan B. Sc, B. Ed

Hmm...seems I haven't posted anything about my nephew since he was born. Well, let's remedy that.

First off, he was 7lbs, 4oz and born shortly after 2pm on Wed, June 24th, 2009. It's a boy, in case you couldn't tell by my use of pronouns, and his name (wait for it)

      Peter Parker Findlay.

Yup. That's right. My brother, cousin and I sat down and thought of all the comic names that could possibly work as first and middle names, and that one sounded the best.

Others that we thought of were:
      Bruce Wayne
      Clark Kent
      Hal Jordan
      Tim Drake
      Richard "Dick" Grayson
      Barry or Bart Allen
      Allan Scott
      Reed Richard(s)
      Steve Roger(s)
      Charles (Francis) Xavier
      Robert Drake

I can't remember any more. Any others you can think of?

We had a hard time coming up with girls' name, though. Any ideas?

    • Awesome and Suck!

      EagleMan B. Sc, B. Ed

      First, the suck:

Hours are being cut back at work, so all full-time employees are only getting 32 hours a week until September. Lame. And it's nothing to do with the recession, but fully to do with the owners of the store failing to properly keep track of the store's used hours each week and not noticing huge hours overruns.

      Now the awesome:

I don't even need those hours because I got a gig teaching a summer school course for a month! It's Math 8/9 Enriched, which means I can teach on pretty much any topic I want from Math 8-10, and I don't have to do report cards! Woo!

      I begin next week.

Also, as of my writing this (I think, because I haven't heard from them yet), I'm an uncle! My brother and sister-in-law went to the hospital this morning for a C-Section because the baby was all backwards and wouldn't come out of her tiny frame easily. By now they should have a brand new baby boy or girl. First grandchild on both of my parents' sides of the family.

So, the other day I login to the site to find this message from ChurchesWife:

      SO--
You're going to meet me somewheres in the next week because I think you're awesome, okay?

      Okay.

      I'll tell everybody.

It turns out that she's in Vancouver this week. So today, I had dinner at Red Robin with her and Knuckles Dawson. It was yummy, and it was cool to meet someone else from the site...someone from out of town/province/country. It was also neat to meet another AOIOer. She and Knuckles are fun, and I wish we had more time to hang out, but it doesn't look like our schedules will allow it.

    • Pvt. Steve Rogers: R.I.P.

      EagleMan B. Sc, B. Ed

Two years ago this past Saturday, March 7, 2007, Private Steve "Captain America" Rogers was shot and killed. It was a moment that was felt not only in America, but all over the world. It was a story that made the news in many countries and shocked tens, if not hundreds of thousands of people.

A symbol of purity, patriotism, and justice, Steve always fought for the rights of Americans and always stayed true to his very rigid moral code. An influence to many modern heroes, Steve always encouraged others and inspired them to become better people. He will be missed.

But the legacy of Captain America lives on in Steve's oldest friend, James "Bucky" Buchanan Barnes. Formerly the Winter Soldier, Bucky now wears the Red, White and Blue and carries the shield. While Bucky's views on crime fighting differ slightly from Steve's, he tries his best to honour Steve's memory and do him proud. And while it will take time for the public to come to give this new Captain America the trust and respect they showed Steve, his perseverance during this period proves that he is worthy of the mantle.

And even though he no longer lives among us, a part of Steve lives on in each of us as we remember everything he has done for America, and the world.

      Goodbye, Steve.

    • Stuff I've been meaning to write about:

      EagleMan B. Sc, B. Ed

The purpose of this journal is to write about a few things that I've been meaning to write about for a while now.
      1) Final Crisis
      2) Push
      3) Anything else I think about while I type this

      1) So, I said that I'd write something about Final Crisis, like, 3 weeks ago when it ended, so here it is. While I thought that the general plot was pretty good, I thought the execution was terrible. Several times I'd start reading the new issue of Final Crisis and would think "Did I miss an issue? Am I forgetting what happened in the last one?" But no, it's just that it wasn't written well. Or, I'd be reading an issue and in the middle, become confused because it felt like we'd jumped into a scene in the middle of it.

The tie-ins were definitely the best part about this story and were really well written. It's not a good thing when people are so confused that they understand more about the story once they read the WIkipedia article. Here's a few examples:

Darkseid's followers unleash Omega Beams on the two Flashes, who outrace the beams and cause them to hit Darkseid.

First, I didn't know that Darkseid's followers could emit Omega Beams. I thought it was just Darkseid himself. Also, due to the angle of the panel, it was hard to tell where the beams originated, so it looked like they'd just appeared or had been chasing the Flashes the whole time.

Wonder Woman is freed and binds Darkseid with her lasso, freeing the rest of humanity from Darkseid's control.

How does this happen? All we see is WW holding her Furies mask and crushing it. Then we see Darkseid struggling against the lasso, we don't even see WW use it. And it's not explained that lassoing him frees humanity (or how).

Nix Uotan who, in turn, summons the Zoo Crew, the army of Heaven, the Green Lantern Corps, and the Super Young Team (now transformed into the new Forever People).

I didn't know that it was Nix that did this (except the Zoo Crew). I thought they just all showed up at the same time (by themselves). And how are we supposed to know that the Super Young Team is now the new Forever People. They don't change names or costumes or anything. That whole part where something happened to them...not well explained.

Superman and Nix Uotan then use the Miracle Machine to recreate the Multiverse as it was before Darkseid's ascension, and turn the other Monitors into humans.

Is that what they wish for? How do we know that? They don't mention it anywhere. And it seemed like the Monitors disappeared into obscurity of their own power due to their obsoleteness. I didn't get that they were turned into humans.

And this is just from Final Crisis #7. It was very confusing. They could have easily made this a 12 issue story if they had put a bit more detail into the storytelling (dialogue and panels).

      2) Last week I saw a advanced screening of Push. I thought it was really good. There were three things in particular that I liked about it:
      i) Dakota Fanning. She hasn't been in much lately, and my mom thinks it was because she was going through an "awkward teen girl" phase. Whatever the reason, she hasn't lost it. She even swears a bit and has a drunk scene in the movie. Chris Evans was okay too.

ii) The Special Effects. If there's one thing that superhero movies have trouble with, it's how to express non-visible powers, and they do a really good job of it here.

iii) The abilities. As I mentioned above, this movie contains a wide range of powers, and some of them are quite unique in either the way they are defined or how they are used:

Watchers - These people see visions of the future, though it works more on peoples' intentions than some kind of pre-defined future. They usually draw their visions in notebooks.
Movers - Telekinetics. Pretty straight forward, but used in some interesting ways at times. More like Cable-style.
Pushers - Telepaths. These people use their ability to make you believe something, or even implant memories with history into your mind.
Shadows - These people can block all within their range from Watchers.
Sniffs - These people have sensory-based abilities (manly smell). Using the sense on an object allows them to see its history.
Bleeders - These people emit a powerfully destructive sonic scream that, if close enough, can make a person's head bleed (shattered ear drums), even turning one's brain to mush.
Shifters - These people can transmute objects from one thing to another, but only for a limited time. Then the object reverts to its original form.
Wipers - These people can erase memories, either specific events or blocks of time.
Stitchers - These people can heal or harm with a touch.

In terms of story, it's fairly unique as far as "powers" movies go, and it's quite well written and well thought out. It'd highly recommend seeing it.

      3) I was almost done writing this when my browser mysteriously closed, so I had to write it all again. Some turned out better, some worse. Oh, well. Them's the breaks.

Also, I'll be moving at the end of the month. Hopefully I can arrange for Internet before I get in, but I may not be around the first week of March.

I'm bummed that RvB CanWest was cancelled this year due to costs. I was looking forward to it. A lot. The last two were lots of fun. We may just party at Luke's place instead.

Blackest Night approaches! It keeps getting better all the time! DC's new thing is a series of mini-stories at the back of issues called "Origins and Omens." It features Scar, the rogue Guardian, who is writing the "Black Book," supposedly about how the Darkest Night and its master will defeat these heroes using their fears and insecurities. (continued in first comment)

All the frames I bought were plastic. And the new ones I got were about $30 each. They actually seem pretty sturdy in a fall. One fell and bashed a glass jar, bent the bottom a little bit, but it was fine. The Wal-Mart frames would fall and the corners would all snap when they hit the ground. And the one that fell apart on the wall, the frame apparently came apart in two corners, and then gravity did the rest. But I would never use glass. Too heavy.

I'm busy Sunday, Monday, Thursday, so it looks like we'd have to do it Wednesday or Friday. I'll call Luke tomorrow (really, later today), and see if he's available one or two of those days. And really, if not, we still have another full week before it's due.

      Quick CB question:

has there been a comic where the heroes completely and totally win after the villains say "Screw it! We're done!" because they're plans are consistently foiled, only to have someone, namely a morally and ethically-deprived individual, come along with some grand plan that involves scads of death and mayhem, killing who gets in the way of the plan, civilian or otherwise?

Thought I'd post the explanation to Geekers color changing in SH up here in your comments. I'll try to keep it short as possible, and maybe expand on it because I'm sure your going to reply with questions and stuff.

When I was writing Geekers fight scene I was looking for a way to expand on his power and and actually showing the 'density change' visually through the minds eye as opposed to saying 'Geekers increased his density' and leaving it at that. I know he got shiny and turned and his skin turned dark and silvery..which screams Colossus..which is understandable but I needed a visual to represent the change, and while it looks like I made Geekers something he wasn't, the idea was that the solidifying the matter of his body to much denser heights would also change the color and composition of his skin...since it no longer is skin as we know it---and his density would also increase his ability dish out the pain.

Ok, so it wasn't as short as I thought it would be, and it's a bit of a ramble, hope it makes some sense smiley7.gif
