First of all, the class did okay on the first test. Not fabulous, but it wasn't a washout. I think I know what to do to help them prepare better for the next one. Woot!

Second, we got the replacement 360 in the mail. It isn't the same box (different serial number) and oh man does it make a lot of noise. I don't know if it always made that much noise, or what, because it used to be inside the entertainment center. It sounds like it is grinding coffee or something. Sheesh. But hey, it works.

Third, we got our copy of Crackdown, and it turns out it is rather fun to play. I never played GTA but I guess it is sort of the same thing. But here you are SUPPOSEDLY a "good guy" and you can only kill 50 civilians (by accident, of course) before the other "Peacekeepers" turn against you.

The fun thing is that you have superpowers and can jump over buildings and throw trucks around... it is reminiscent of Spider-Man 2. Unfortunately for me it is a mite vomit-o-scopic but it is fun. I got on briefly and had a lot of fun killing gang members by running them over with various cars.

When I lived in Baltimore a police officer came to talk to the interns about how to drive defensively late at night on the Johns Hopkins campus and I'll never forget his wise words of wisdom:

"Use your car as a weapon."

      *nods sagely*

My only real complaint is that there is no female avatar... although there are other NPC female police officers. You only can choose from being a scary looking White, Black, Asian, or New Zealand guy. Also, at least on the first few levels, you only can kill Central Americans, Russian-types and some Chinese gang with an "Enigmatic Wang". Why all the hatin', Crackdown? Why we gotta be killin' just the Mexicans, Russians and Wangs?

I want to be a super-powered girl killing evil gangs from Greenland and Belgium. Darn those Belgians! With their waffles!!

Ah well. In any event, it looks like Crackdown was worth buying even without the bribery of the Halo3 Beta invite. Last night Spyton was online playing with HavokBlue and I saw frolor2 and Chirpy were online playing as well. I love that you can play co-op online.

Mowing down Enigmatic Wangs has never been so fun!

    • This hurts me...

      Elnea

      ...more than it hurts you.

So, my class has its first exam tomorrow. I am so stressed out about it, I can't tell you. Actually, I can tell you quantitatively how stressed out I am. My blood elf Elnea the Priest has gone up 3 levels in 3 days... she's now 23.

Some people smoke, some people bite their nails, I obsessively play WoW. It is very soothing to the nerves. I've also got 35Gold I've made selling white crap for 5-15 Silver at the Auction House. This will mean nothing to any non-Wowers... trust me, it is very, very sad.

In college it never once occurred to me that the profs would be nervous about tests. Maybe I would have cursed them a little less... But I really, REALLY want my students to do well. But they also pay me to teach them the material, and there's no way to tell if they have learned anything without asking them questions. I have no trick questions, and everything was covered in lecture. I told them what is on the test. I've even given them mnemonics, including me singing the unofficial White Sox theme song to remind them how local anesthetics block sodium conduction.
      IP10_1LaLaLa.jpg
Trust me, this is a great mnemonic, and it was a memorable performance.

Send some positive thought rays towards my nursing wannabes tomorrow (Tuesday) around 6pm CST, would ya? I want them to do well.

Second, I thought I'd give an update to that AAO business I reported a few weeks ago:

First Round Goes to Surgery by Surgeons in New Mexico
The New Mexico State Senate Public Affairs Committee voted Feb. 9 to table S.B. 367, a bill that would have authorized optometrists to perform a wide range of scalpel and laser surgeries. This is the first round in a fight to preserve quality of patient surgical care in New Mexico, as the optometric lobby is committed to push its O.D. surgery agenda until the legislature adjourns in mid March. The combined efforts of the New Mexico Academy of Ophthalmology, the Academy's Surgery by Surgeons campaign and the New Mexico State Medical Society led to this early victory.

Let me emphasize again that I am very pro-optometrists. I go to an optometrists myself for my contact lens care and some anterior segment (front of the eye) issues. In Fort Wayne my partner and I were the only Retina specialists who accepted referrals from optometrists (some MDs insist on having patients shuttled through another MD first). But the optometrists are not medical doctors like ophthalmologists are and I feel strongly they should not be entering the eye with large pointed objects.

Third, no one got the most important bit of my stream-of-consciousness prose in my last entry! I just have to point out two bits there to the old-timers. But I will have to invite you into the scariness that is my brain:

D**** you to h***, cable company! <--From SNL skit, "Psycho Divorced Mother from H*ll" with Kirstie Alley
Then followed, in rapid succession a litany of Charleton Heston quotes from different movies...
You Maniacs! You blew it up! Ah, damn you! G** d*** you all to hell! <--Planet of the Apes
Get your hands off me, you d*** dirty apes!<--Planet of the Apes
Soylent Green is people! <--Soylent Green
You are not worthy to receive these Ten Commandments! <--The Ten Commandments
...then the next movie I thought of was "Ben-Hur but I immediately thought of the famous Second City Episode which was a two-part parody of Ben-Hur, where his sister and mother don't end up in a leper colony, but rather a leopard colony, which involved Andrea Martin running around with little fuzzy leopard ears. :
      Not a leopard colony!
Ya hey dere! Take off, hoser!

The final quote is, as far as I know, the national motto of Canada.
      smiley8.gif
I'm sorry, no one won that "spot the weirdness" contest. Yes, I don't give pop quizzes in Pharmacology class. But I do here.

    • Help, Comcast Sucks

      Elnea

I got an angry call from their phone service saying my telephone bill was a month overdue. I set up automatic payments 2 months ago and thought it was all taken care of. No, turns out it wasn't. Comcast telephone service is separate from their internet service and is a separate financial enitity. The person who called suggested I go online to comcast.com and set up automatic payments from my bank for the phone service. Turns out, they don't have a webpage any more because Comcast wants to make everyone buy their digital phone service.

I just called and the "phone lady voice" actually said, "I'm sorry, we can't connect you with any phone service representatives."

      I actually laughed out loud.

So, now they lose. I'll mail them the payment but I want to switch phone service. I absolutely will not go back to AT & T for reasons going back many, many years. I made an oath never to return and I must honor that pledge.

I really do want a landline, because when the power goes out I need to be able to make calls... and I like having two phone lines. One for the telemarketers to call and all my utility companies to have that I have loaded with caller ID, and one line that only my family knows about.

What do you guys suggest? I see ads all the time about these other companies where you keep the same number... how does that work? Do you have a national company you use that is actually good?

Oh, and if anyone knows a way to escape the evil grip of Comcast "HIGH SPEED" internet, I'd like to know. I pay $120 a month to them, including extra for the extra high speed and the internet crashes 3-4 times a week.

Seriously, it is like I am back in 1982 and having to reboot the U of I at Chicago Eye & Ear Computer room every day. I actually set up the modem and router so I can unplug and plug them back in easily without bending over, since I do it so often. This last week we were running latencies of 1600ms on WoW. The net was down again this morning.

      Grrrrr.......

Sorry to vent, but I really could use some suggestions. I really don't know what else to do than poke pins into these Brian Roberts and Steve Burke dolls.

      smiley4.gifsmiley4.gifsmiley4.gifsmiley4.gif

      Today's Shouted Phrases
      G******n Comcast!

I hope you get a really bad cold, Brian! AND a headache! And I hope your internet goes down! You too, Steve, whoever you are!

...okay, my mind was wandering there for a second. And if you could actually follow that stream of consciousness, then you probably are as nutty as me. Sorry about that. Back to the hatin'!
      smiley8.gif

PS: I should mention I just left Verizon cellular when I discovered their sales agent trying to cheat me out of $80. Also, Spyton and I were NEVER able to speak to each other on our two cell phones... which were two separate numbers. I thought that was a little pathetic. Also after listening to the infamous 0.002 cents vs dollars thing I decided they were all just too stupid. Is it so much to ask that you get service where they tell you how much to pay and you just pay it? I get that service sometimes goes down. I get that! But don't lie about things, or sic debt collectors on me because your company is too screwed up to do business correctly!!!

    • They grow up so fast

      Elnea

My son Spyton was such a cute baby. Yeah, I know I'm biased. Here's one of my favorite baby pictures of him, shown with our cat Lillie (may she rest in peace) watching over him:
      BabySpytonHowl.jpg
Such tiny little hands! ... but in the last few days I've been getting these jabs to wake me up to the fact that he is growing up. I will relate them here so you can share in my parental pain:

      1. I mentioned to Spyton on Monday that several school districts were unable to bus their kids to school (but still had classes) because someone slashed the school bus tires, costing the school district thousands of dollars to replace the vandalized tires.

Spyton observed, "That's a really p*ssy thing to do. You know, if you want to be manly, you don't sneak around slashing tires. You go find the biggest guy in school and wrestle him while girls are watching."

      smiley10.gif

      2. While driving to school this morning we were having one of our little word games where one person says something and then the second person uses the first person's sentence and it goes back and forth. You'll get the idea:

ME: Boy, the wind sure blows. Look at the snow.
      SPYTON: The snow blows.
      ME: No, wind blows
      SPYTON: Hurricane blows
      ME: Air conditioner blows
      SPYTON: Fan blows
      ME: Joe Bloes
      SPYTON: Monica Lewinsky blows.
      ME: ...

      smiley7.gif

      3. Tonight we were walking through a parking lot where some plows had piled the snow about eight feet high.

Spyton looked at the great big snow mound and said wistfully, "That is a great snow pile. It would be so fun to play on that. I wish we had piles of snow like that at school."

I replied, "If you had snow pile like that, would you be able to play on it at school?"

Spyton scowled and said, "No, because it isn't cool to have fun anymore."

      smiley2.gif

Today's Vocabulary Words and Life Lessons
      1. Don't vandalize public property. Wrestle publicly instead!*
      2. Don't mention Monica Lewinsky's hummers to your mother during word game time. Actually, just don't bring the subject up. Ever. Unless you have a bona fide medical question about it. Then it is okay. Even then, consider just Googling it.
      3. Puberty sucks.

      smiley4.gif

PS: For those of you wondering what Baby Spyton is reading there, it is the poem "Howl" by Allen Ginsberg. I guess we couldn't find The Very Hungry Caterpillar that day.

    • Valentines or Die!

Yes, it is Gee's birthday. Go leave her this image!
(Which you can find here: i2.photobucket.com/albums/y20/LinneaRetina/GeeValentine.jpg

      *giggle*

Also, it is Valentine's Day, a day celebrated in America with intense misery by women and stress by men, regardless of age, race, creed, or whether they actually have a valentine or not.

My earliest memories of Valentine's Day were in grammar school, where we would bring homemade valentines to school and give them to the boys we liked, in the hopes of reciprocation. I remember in third grade having quite a crush on Eric Huffman and Chris Gore (who probably have since started up a law firm specializing in kitten endangerment and surgical malpractice) and being quite worried about whether I'd get anything in return. I actually don't remember if I did get anything. I just remember being worried about it.

It sort of went downhill from there.

I think Valentine's Day, like New Year's Eve, has been built up in womens' mind as a "test of success of womanhood" to the point where if a woman does not:
      1. Have a date/boyfriend/husband, and said person does not
      2. Send flowers/chocolate/diamonds, then said person does not
      3. Love/lust after/mildly desire the woman, and therefore the woman
      4. Sucks/deserves to die/is probably a lesbian.

Not that there is anything wrong with being a lesbian. But you get my drift. This isn't logical thinking.

Valentine's mania wore off for me when I was about 27, when my boyfriend at the time, a guy who went on to become a neuroradiologist, gave me the dreaded "Valentine's Day Cookie". One of those big 15 inch cookies from Mrs. Field's that says "Be MIne" or some such. No flowers, chocolates or jewelry. I was crushed. But after I realized I wasn't a lesbian, no matter how much the cookie proved I was, I came to the conclusion that Valentine's Day loot was not a measure of my appeal to the male of the species, but rather it was a only just another day to celebrate the massacre of gangsters.

So ladies: Relax. Don't let Hallmark dictate to you whether you feel good about yourselves. It is bad enough we let the advertising world make us feel bad about being too tall/short, thin/fat, blond/brunette, white/black/asian/hispanic/other, jewish/christian/taoist, liberal/conservative, pie-eating/cake-loving, etc etc etc. And don't test your boyfriend/husband/guy-you-have-locked-in-your-basement with the V-Day quiz. If you want flowers and a card, say, "I want flowers and a card." Men don't know about the importance of the test. Just treat the day as a little fun. A day to wear pink and to not feel guilty about eating candy.

And men: There is still time to get flowers and a card. I am pretty sure that the gas stations carry them this time of year.

This should be a short journal, as I procrastinated terribly all weekend (but had a wonderful time!) and am now frantically writing tomorrow's lecture.

      My motto:

      Procrastinate now!

Also, RvB is loading really slowly for me, so about 60% of the time I will leave a comment and when I hit submit I get the screen that reminds me to visit the Roosterteeth Store. Which still is not carrying a girl shirt that says "I like me."

      Hmph.

Anyway, thanks to kardiez for pointing out that the Little Sis "Woohoo!" valentine link was broken. Now fixed. Woohoo!

Also thanks to Wigglepie13 for the image and caption for:
      RvBValfewweeks.jpg

And here's a Simmons: "As the new leader, what I say goes!" card.

      Ha!

I've got links to all the old valentines and the new ones in my images section. Feel free to take them and use them as you wish. I'm just worried that my cable woes will prevent me from leaving RvB Valentines in everyone's comments sections this year. Keep your fingers crossed that ther durn-blatted Comcast people will fix the problem!

Okay, back to writing the lecture. If any of my students stumble upon this journal, I want to assure you that I will not be including the term neuroleptanesthesia on the exam next week. But you should be able to tell me how many half-lives it takes to get rid of 75% of a dose of a drug... and which beta blocker on the drug list is non-selective.

      *waits a moment*

The answers are two and propranolol.

Hi! I thought this was about the right time to post my RvB valentines. I've made some new ones for this year. If you have a valentine you'd like to see made, feel free to PM me with the quote and the image... I need an image as close to 600x600 as you can get. And I need a tight shot of the reds to make a Blue Sucks version... if anyone would want such a thing. smiley8.gif

And I really need a caption for that one of Simmons and Sarge. I just can't find a quote that truly expresses the kind of deep but completely disloyal love Simmons has for Sarge. Any suggestions? LOL!

Here is the selection from last year.
      RvBVGIF1.gif

      RvBVGIF2.gif

You can grab the higher res individual images here.

and here are some new ones... I can't post more than 2 or 3 images in one journal with the new RvB.com, so you'll have to click on links. If that is too boring, you can go to my photobucket account and look at them here:
      s2.photobucket.com/albums/y20/LinneaRetina/RvBValentines/

or I posted them in my images section as well (check the comments on the valentine image!)

When you are handing these out, remember to get one for your teacher! And that unpopular kid. You never know who will grow up to be a supermodel or the president!

      Sheila: "Sounds like fun"
      Church "Girls can't share"
      Little Sis "Woohoo!"
      Blue Team "Red Sucks"
Grif & Sis "Don't embarrass the family
Grif "You've gone blind with imaginary power"
Sarge "I'm just so depressed, I can't even threaten your life for being a jackass"
Caboose "We have to cherish these times
      Blue team no caption, psychedelic
      Simmons and Sarge no caption
Doc "Think about something that makes you really angry that isn't me"
Tucker "It's not mine. We weren't even going steady.

Okay, gotta run and work on writing my Pharm test. I'll update this journal with new valentines as I make them.

      Toodles!

Ah well, da Bears didn't bring home the Superbowl American Football trophy. But I can't be mad. I mean, look at Coach Dungy of the Indianapolis Colts:
      0122dung_bw.jpg
Who could be mad at that guy? And was I the only one who got a little verklempt when he and Coach Smith (the coach of the Chicago Bears - for my international friends) hugged right after the game? I was? Well, that's me. And I heard the Colts player who caught that interception in the second half and ran it back for a touchdown grew up in Chicago. I told you we're all the same here in the Midwest. Well, except for those b*st**ds who root for the (Wisconsin) Green Bay Packers. Those people are in league with the devil.

      smiley8.gif

For those still nursing a grudge, I found this version of "Bear Down, Chicago Bears" performed by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Chorus which is just... surreal. And therefore link-worthy.

And if that isn't entertaining enough for you, go to Spyton's journal and follow the link to the song, "In your yard I am the Ferengi man, very odd and chunky." You'll be humming it all day!

Cool. It's 16 to 14 right now. So it isn't a slaughter either way, so it is still interesting. But I don't really care who wins the Superbowl at this point. It was worth it for the glow-in-the-dark marching band.

I'll admit I got a little choked up when Prince sang "Purple Rain". I don't know if anyone under the age of 40 would have the same reaction, but there was some welling up. A little brimming of tears. I'm so old.

      smiley1.gif

But even if you don't like Prince, come on... GLOW-IN-THE-DARK MARCHING BAND!

You were at Chicago for reactor, right? I think I remember you. You were there with your son(?) and Gus offered him a cookie (this was on saturday)? I thought that was so cool of him... At least, I think that was you..

I totally asked the questions about Show being featured user and then the one about the best part about doing RvB. I said the part about "pretending to entertain people" and Gus was like...wait, you aren't?

One of my favorite (for the lack of a better word) costume people was the ninja...we stalked him the entire time...or he stalked us..

..either way, someone was getting stalked.

      I'm glad Gus enjoyed them!

I walked into that con and was like...I'm so scared.

The recipes will be up soon...because of my cookbook project for the site...Kathleen's sugar ones were awesome too! smiley12.gif

All the Halloween festivities I've seen for the horde have been centered around the undead (go figure). I haven't played much the last couple of days because I've been doing some maintenance on my PC. smiley5.gif

You make a good point, but the disturbing thing to me is that when someone really dies, when someone here really needs support in their grief, everyone will remember this and that person will have to deal with suspicion and accusations on top of their genuine loss. In that sense I think it matters a lot. smiley2.gif
