    • We hates the Safe Mode! Hates it!

      ElroyPorge

So, it seems that my laptop computer is pretty much infested with Trojans and malware and all sorts of other bad stuff guaranteed to make it go blooey the instant I turn my back on it. I never knew I owned the technological equivalent of the girl in high school with no gag reflex but apparently I do. As the journal title implies, I'm currently operating in Safe Mode with Networking, which is Windows jargon for "We'll let you get on the internet but we won't let you do anything fun like look at pictures or listen to stuff". Oh well, I suppose having a horribly crippled computer is better than having no computer at all. At least I can get to RT and FB. I'm currently in the process of transferring all of my data over to an external hard drive so I can reset to factory settings. I'd do a system restore, if that weren't the first thing that the virus screwed up when it turned my computer into a Sunday brunch. Talk about hitting you where it hurts. I'm tempted to take it into the store where I bought it, but they'll keep it for a week, take 5 minutes to pop a disc into the disc drive to undo whatever the last virus did so that it goes back to just barely usable, then charge me $100 for the "service'. I don't really want to restore to factory settings, but there are just so many things that have gone wrong with the dumb thing since I bought it. On the other hand, I'm not looking forward to reloading everything I've put on the computer in the last two years or so.

Any thoughts on how I should proceed?

Edit: I just went back and re-read a bunch of my old journals. Being that they come once every millenia or so, they provide an interesting view of my obsessions and opinions over time. I'm curious, when you check out a possible new friend on RT.com, do you go back and read their old journals or do you just look at the current one and base your opinion of them on that? Or do you not even read the journals?

    • Who watches The Watchmen?

      ElroyPorge

I do, I do! I am currently basking in the afterglow of a midnight showing of The Watchmen. (Yes, I realize it’s 7:30 AM, but I went to IHOP for 4 hours of discussion and pancakes afterwards.) The movie was just one big slice of win pie (or win cake, if that's your thing.) On a scale of 1 to Awesome, it lit up all the lights on my switchboard, though I must admit I do have two criticisms of the show.
      1) Graphic nudity. Yes, I realize that most of you will consider this a good thing, and yes, I realize it was present in the comic book, but it wasn't necessary. You can show two characters having sex without having to show their naughty bits. Intelligent photography and clever camera angles could have helped turn it from an R-rated movie into a PG-13 movie. I will never again be able to think of the joke, "If you choke a Smurf, what color does it turn?" without thinking of Dr. Manhattan. Ewwww.
      2) Graphic violence. Graphic beyond the level of violence in the source material. Think "Saw" or "The Hills Have Eyes" and you'll be in the right ballpark. This is another problem that could have been solved with clever camera angles, or just plain not putting in as much blood. And it's a shame too because the hand-to-hand fights rocked. This could have been a great comic book movie for the younger generation but the excessive violence and skin put it just out of their reach. It saddens me to think that a lot of kids who want to see this amazing film won’t be able to because the director or producer or whoever couldn’t keep his Beretta in his pants.
Aside from that, though, it was a great movie. It truly did justice to the graphic novel. The casting director chose dead-on look-a-likes to play all the main roles and they did a fantastic job with their parts. I found myself wondering at one point if the SFX crew used some digital trickery to make the actors look more like their 4 color counterparts. Either way, they each delivered solid performances. They managed to wade through the hundreds of pages of story to craft a well told, well thought out script that gave you everything you need to know to understand what's going on without losing any of the original epicness of Alan Moore's vision. They made a few small changes to the script, but only those necessary to improve and clarify the story for the non-fan. All in all, I'd give it a 9 out of 10. Well worth the wait and definitely worth a second viewing (and third and maybe fourth).
(Oh, and in case any of you were wondering, one fan did come dressed as The Silk Spectre II. She was the center of much attention and camera flashery.)

PS There were trailers for the new Star Trek movie, Wolverine: Origins, and the new Terminator movie before the film, none of which I had seen yet. Bonus!
PPS I got my review in before amarh. Woot!

    • I don't normally do trends but....

      ElroyPorge

....I saw this on BlanwDee's journal and it worked out pretty well for her so I thought I'd try it. Of course, people actually follow her journals and profile so I'll probably get no responses, but it can't hurt to try. Besides, I haven't posted a journal in a while.

      Rules:
-Grab the book nearest you. Right now.
      -Turn to page 56.
      -Find the fifth sentence.
-Post that sentence along with these instructions in a journal entry, and post your sentence in a comment here as well.
-Don't dig for your favorite book, the coolest, the most intellectual.

      Here was my quote:
"Lots more structural damage along the way, but still no bodies, not even any blood."
-Something from the Nightside by Simon R. Green
      I like it.

Aside from that, not much going on with me. A co-worker quit just as the holidays started so I'll be working overtime. Nice to have the extra pay with Christmas coming but I feel sorry for my boss, who has to fill the hours that no one volunteers for. Oh well, 'tis the season to be jorry. Fa ra ra ra ra ra ra ra ra.

Also, I just saw this on YouTube and laughed my butt off. Personally, I feel all music videos should be performed by Legos.

It has been forever since I took my sanity pills long enough to make a journal so I've decided it's time to jump on the fad bandwagon (say that five times fast), and only four or five weeks late. It's time for everyone I've never met in real life to get to know me better. That's right, it's question and answer time! *Cue the cheers and applause.*

    • I just had the weirdest dream.

      ElroyPorge

I just woke up from the wierdest dream. smiley7.gif
I dreamt I was at PAX 08, hanging with the RvB crew. For some reason, Jason and Gus kept dumping beer on me, which stuck to my skin and peeled off in layers like when you get a sunburn. Kathleen wouldn't let me out of her sight and kept punching me whenever I talked to someone else (which is unusual considering I've never met her before). And Geoff was mad at me because I kept giving Griffon shoulder rubs and she was ignoring him. The rest of the gang were there too but I don't remember what they were doing.
The oddest part of the dream was that some of the people were real and some were their RvB Comic counterparts. Jason, Kathleen, Geoff, Joel, and Becca were real, but Griffon, Gus, Dan, Nathan, Matt, and Burnie were all cartoons. No one seemed to notice this but me. Even when I asked Nathan why I could only see the lower half of his face, he said it was because I was too short to see the upper half. How messed up is that?
And in other news, one of the kids that I work with stabbed me in the arm with a ballpoint pen this morning. Oh how I love me job! Hope everyone is having as eventful a day as I am. smiley0.gif

It's been a while since I've updated my journal so here's a big, steaming pile of whatever I happen to have in my head.

I saw The Dark Knight last night. As everyone and their grandmother already knows, this is the greastest movie to come out this summer. To be honest, I wasn't really a big Heath Ledger fan before he passed away (10 Things I Hate About You is about the only movie I can remember seeing him in), but his role in this movie changed my mind in a big way. It truly saddens me now to think that he's passed away and will be unable to reprise his role as The Joker. I've heard talk of Heath receiving a a posthumous Oscar for Best Supporting Actor and I think he totally deserves it. The odd thing about the movie is that it didn't end when I expected it to end. About three fourths of the way into the movie, it came to a huge climax with a main character dying, then the movie kept going. Then it came to another big climax, then ended. I believe that makes it a multiple orgasm movie. No wonder people are raving about it. Personally, I'm just happy that I figured out the Batmobile's transformation from tank into kick-arse motorcycle ahead of time. I knew it was coming and it still blew my socks off. Anyhoo, it's a great flick so go see it if you haven't already.

Speaking of movies, this seems to be the summer of awesome movies. Usually the summer starts off big then kind of peters out halfway into June but the hits just keep on coming. I haven't been to the theatres much in the last two months and when I was looking at the movie listings in the paper the other day, I counted no less than 9 movies out that I wanted to see. How cool is that? It's too bad that I don't have more free time. Oh well, I'll just have to cherry pick my favorites and wait for the rest on DVD.

As for me, I'm keeping busy. I finally got my government rebate check and have a fair amount of overtime cash coming my way in the next week or so and, after having some expensive and much needed repairs made to my front end brake assembly, I'm going to buy the first Wii I can get my hands on. I'm psyched and can't wait for Tales of Symphonia 2 to come out. (November 18th!)

In other news, I'm in the mood for pizza. I think I'll go order one.

"Remember, I'm pulling for you. We're all in this together. Keep your stick on the ice."

PS A mod point to anyone who knows where the quotes in this journal come from. (And don't just use Google Search.)

    • I hope it's a joke.

      ElroyPorge

I was just updating my RvB profile and came across something interesting. When I went into the Favorite Movies section, I noticed the one line tutorial at the top of the screen. It says to seperate movie names with a comma and then demonstrates the concept. It lists Matrix, Tron, and Kill Bill, all of which I am fine with. The last one it lists is The Spice Girls Movie.
      smiley5.gif
Someone at RvB has a sick sense of humor.

    • Happy Sponsor Day

      ElroyPorge

Yay, I'm a sponsor now. This means I will become instantly popular and surrounded by friends and everyone will want to watch me.
      Hello? (hello, hello, hello)
      Echo. (echo, echo, echo)
      Huh, maybe not.
Anyhoo, I'm feeling much better than I felt before. Turns out that the reason I had 24/7 nausea was because of the medication I was taking for something else. smiley5.gif Yeah, the doctor made me more sick than I was before. Oh well. I'm off those now and feeling 100% better.
Love the new RvB series. Can't wait to see all the old characters come back. I'm glad they brought back Sister and Caboose early. They're my favorites.
So, what do you think about the new mod system? I haven't seen anyone with an opinion on it. (Just kidding of course.) I think it could use some tweeking but I'm fine with it as it is. Then again, I only joined the site about 2 months ago so I didn't have all that many mod points to begin with. Oh well. I'm looking forward to more site upgrades.
Well, talk to you all later.

I just learned how to add images to the About section of my profile. It took me about three hours of trial and error and forum trolling and messing around with MS Paint (the bane of my existence) to figure it out, but I finally got it. Big thank you to Neoma for all the advice. All to make a stupid joke that occured to me while watching RvB season 1. Yeah, I'm a moron. (Hopefully someone will get the joke.)

No, go ahead and take the image. And I know that you can get it on a tshirt. Apparently they're available from Amazon.com (as well as boxers!), but I don't really like the look of those ones. Get the ones from Diamond - go to your local comic/collectibles shop and see if they'll order it in. Just ask to see a Previews catalogue. It's usually in there, which means that they can order it.
