While Geoff was off in his mad dash to get 10k gamerscore and put Burnie into debt, I too decided to make a dash for a higher score, but in my case it was more of a mild jog, with the modest goal of 2k points, starting from 8010, and since Gamestop was having a 3 for 2 sale, I though it would be the perfect opportunity to play 3 game I've always meant to play but never got around to: Prey, The Darkness and Bioshock.

To start with: Prey. I loved the game, a lot more than I was expecting too. The game suffers from the 1st gen loading problems (they are too frequent and take to damn long), and the character models are rather stiff, which makes it a bit difficult to identify or even care for the charcters. However, the level design, or to be more precise, the puzzles are simply stupendous. This game is one hell of an experience to rap your mind around. Imagine taking the game Portal, then flipping the levels upside down and allowing you to walk on wall as well as being able to become two different entities. That's the standard prey puzzle. This is the kind of game that really makes you think, and was a welcome experience from similar Doom 3 engine based games which are only hallways filled with monsters. However, the biggest flaw of the game (if you can call it that) is the death system. In games, when you die, you go back to your last checkpoint. In Prey, when you die, you get transported into a room with flying spirits and you have to shoot them down to get your heath back. In paper, this seems like a great idea, but in practice, it completely stripps any semblance of challenge from the game. While I will admit that given the option, I'll slap on god mode on a game before you can say intro cutscene, but in Prey, this death system feels cheap. My second gripe with the game are its multiplayer achievements. For a game with such an interesting single player campaign, the Multi Achievements feel tacked on, like they are an excuse to play multilayer. But whatever, game finished, 685 GS into the tally.

Next was Bioshock. I'm sure by now everyone who's wanted to play this game has already done so. I'm glad I stayed the hell away from anything Bioshock related before I got to play this game though, some plot points literally dropped my jaw to the floor. from now on, every time I hear the words "would you kindly..." i'll cringe. 760 points into the tally, though I'll milk it for more at some point.

Finally, the Darkness. Now, this game I have mixed feelings about. To be more precise, I love watching the game, but I hate playing it. Movement is a mess. Jackie moves so sluggishly, like he's got a 50 pound sack of potatoes strapped to his back. Gunplay suffers from this sluggish movements, luckly the enemies are too stupid to ever try to flank you and op instead to stand in place shooting at you, giving you complete freedom to rape them with you Darkness powers. Speaking of them, the are fun to use but difficult to get used to. The biggest problem was with the "Demon Arm" power, which impales anything infront of you, however, this power is also used to pick up things, and to break lightbults (Gah! Light, it burns...). So, while you're standing infront of someone trying to impale them, the are will either A: do what it's supposed to, or B: get you killed while it hits something else or nothing entirely. Despite its faults, The Darkness was still a very unique experience. Most if not all of the characters had decent personalities (my favorite being that of the Darkness itself), so I'll probably find myself playing through it again. For now, it's 575 GS into the tally.

Grand total as of today is 10030. Wish I could have closed the day at 10k flat, but it couldn't be helped.

PS. if you wanted to to start writing huge ass journals again, here you go. smiley0.gif

      Gah, I'm getting old.

      Exile650

It's like I'm playing all my 360 games for the first time again. O.O

To add to this: Games I should have been playing on HD from the start:
Armored Core: For Answer - OMG this game looks so beautiful in high resolution.
Mass Effect: Again, amazing looking game. I'm almost ashamed I played it so much on that crappy CRT TV. Though it begs the question of why Film Grain is on by default, the game looks so much better without it.
Halo 3: Not so much because of the graphics (which look a lot more vibrant), but because of the increased FoV. My biggest complaint about halo 3 was that your field of view is so narrow, I know see that this was because I was playing the game in a 4:3 ratio. playing it on a 16:10 ratio solves that problem.
Mirror's Edge: If you can stand to play this game, do it proper. It looks great!
Fable 2: WOW, now I can never play Fable 2 on anything less than 720p.

Man this game is fun. You wouldn't think simply running from point a to point b is cool but somehow, DICE made it fun.

OK, finished the game. It's short, but I didn't expect it to be very long. The story is OK, nothing earthshattering, but for a game who's backstory involves delivering information for clients, you don't do anything of the sort. It stuck me as odd.

The combat in the game is a bit lackluster, but again, that was to be expected. Still, it's pretty badass when you disarm someone, it's especially cool to see it all in the first person as well. The problem is that the game puts you into heavy combat situations way too much, it slows down the flow of the game since it puts you into a flight or flight situation instead of just letting you run all over the place as you please.

On the topic of running, great stuff. The way momentum works in this game is that as you run faster, you can run through obstacles faster. More speed means higher wall climbs, longer wall runs, faster slides and longer leaps. This gives you a craving for speed, you are compelled to continually keep your momentum up for as long as possible.

The visual style of the game is extremely crips. With deep contrasts between neutral and vibrant colors. In a world dominated by gloomy, atmospheric games, Mirror's Edge stands out. However, the game can be too bright at times, making the edges of building hard to see. This might be do to my Standard Def TV however.

All in all. I loved the game, but then again I'm a guy who's easy to please. Still, I wouldn't recommend this game to everyone, I'd advise you to download the Demo or rent it, especially considering the amount of great games that are dropping this holiday season.

On a side note, since I pre-ordered the game, I got a free runner bag. I expected some tiny little handbag that I could pawn off somewhere, but this thing is a full scale model of the bags in the game. It's big enough that I can use it to lug my 360 to places.

If you remember this journal entry I made a while back, well, I made a group out of it.

But I'm still trying to figure out how the whole group things works, so I'll play around with it a bit. For now, I'm trying to find a picture for the place.

RF Online, the (so far) only MMO game I've devoted my time to is closing down. After a year of no updates or even news of said updates, Codemasters, the game's NA/EU publisher has decided to close down the servers indefinitely. RF Online was a one of a kind game in an MMO market flooded with Medieval themed games. And until I find an MMO that will let me be a kickass Cyborg, I doubt I'll play another.

It's sad really, RF had great potential, and was very fun even without updates. But both Codemasters and CCR were so far up their respective asses to care enough about the game. CCR seemed to have no concern over the NA/EU market, and Codemasters were too spineless to do anything about it. In the end, another great game has come to and end thanks to mismanagement and touchy foreign developers.

I'll really miss my character Delta041. Had a lot of fun with the guy. Here is a nice pic of him in all his glory.

Sitting here at the San Mateo County Jury Assembly room to take party in the ritual known as Jury Duty. Finally the government has the decency to give the people computer to amuse themselves before passing judgement their fellow man. But it doesn't look like I'll get to send someone to jail as all the cases are being delayed/moved/etc. So I'll remain a Jury Virgin.

Code Geass R2 rapped up yesterday and I was thouroly impressed with the ending. I really can't say anything without spoiling it so I'll say I absolutely loved it. However, I was disapointed with the fight between Karen and Suzaku. All that build up for the Winged Gurren and it fights for less than 10 minutes for the entirety of the show. A shame really. I was also disapointed by Jerimiah. They gave him the ability to cancel out Geass. And he gets to use it 3 times through the show. Great way to use resources. But to reiterate, I loved the show. Loved it loved it loved it.

I've started playing Warhammer 40k Dawn of War. I always wanted to pick these games up but finally got around to it. Very fun. However, the only other RTS I've played extensively is Starcraft, which as a point of reference makes DoW seem very easy. It's still a fun game and I can't wait to get through the DoW campaign and move onto the Winter Assault and Dark Crusade campaigns.

I lost hope that this game would get released here. And ubisoft saved the day by localizing it for NA. All in all, they did a great job. The VOs actually sound like they want the job.

FROM SOFTWARE finally got it right. Fixing damn near every gripe I had with AC4, this game is fun from the start. Also, missions don't end in 30 seconds anymore, which really lets you play around with your AC.

One thing that bugs me though. They went back to basics and separated the shop from the AC Assembly menu. This may not seem like a big deal but for me it was a step backward from a nice feature AC4 implemented.

Well, if I can tear myself from my PC gaming, I'll be playing AC:FA on my 360. smiley0.gif
