      • Fate0555

        Whether
The conjunction whether is similar to if. It is most often used to introduce an indirect question.

        Weather
As a noun, the word weather means the atmosphere in terms of temperature, wind, clouds, and precipitation. As a verb, to weather can mean to withstand or to endure or to erode.

      • zogman1

No idea. I'm just assuming there are two different spellings.

I have a lit class which is kind of effective for some creativeness. But I tend to let the tail wag the dog and feel like i don't have the time even when i could easily make it ya know.

D: That's not good! You gotta feed your soul. Ya know? You can't completely give up your writing for school. Even if you have to force yourself.
I'm also insanely busy and stressed with school, but I make myself do things I love. Like art. Even if I don't necessarily have the time. I think if anything, it actually makes my grades better. When you're stressed, you tend to make stupid little mistakes.

      • Osiris5432

I wish i could chase time writing. smiley2.gif School is keeping so damned busy that i'll loosing touch with any creative outlets smiley2.gif

I spend so much time in my room drawing and painting, my parents are either going to commit me or kick me out, lol. smiley6.gif

That is so great :) Teaching music definitely sounds extremely rewarding. Kudos for teaching such young kids as well! If you could chose any age range to teach, what would you pick? Would you still teach 4th-5th graders?

I know trying to make a living solely off of music is very difficult and even impractical. I have come to terms with that. Thank you for putting it lightly as no one else has done before! :)
Every band I've played in I've been told I'm the best within my section. I always thought I'd be "good enough," but I realized it is more than that. You have to want it more than anything else. And I don't. I say that not because I don't have the passion, but because I realized that's not necessarily what I want to do. I want to get into instrument repair. I want to have a family. I want to teach music.

So I guess it seems odd to get a performance degree... I'm fairly certain a lot of my professors have both performance and teaching degrees though. Is it a waste of time to get both?

As far as individual gigs, I have no idea if there is a higher demand for tubas or jazz players. I've had about the same amount of classical and jazz gigs.

        What degrees do you have?

Thank you very much for all the information and advice!

I teach strings in the public schools- beginning 4th and 5th graders. Though it has it's ups and downs (I shudder to think how many times I've heard Twinkle Twinkle Little Star at this point) I do love what I do. The learning curve with beginners is great because the come in knowing nothing, but after two years (those who stick with it) have some good skills- or at least an appreciation for what it takes to play an instrument!

Well, I don't know about your area, but I can say that most of the people who I went to school with who did education and performance undergrad or did performance for grad school are not performing full time. Most teach in some capacity, be it in public or private school or they have their own studios.
In terms of marketability, it is a good idea to get the ed degree if possible. Even if you were teaching in a studio, you can tout the ed degree in your promotion/marketing.
With the way the school systems seem to be headed at the moment, even the outlook for some music programs can look bleak at times… One of my former students who is in college now is getting a double major in math and music ed.

Performing can be a tough haul in terms of practical things as well- schedule, health insurance, not a steady income, lots of driving.
That having been said, I do know some people that works for- either they like the variation, or they have *ahem* "support for the arts" due to a loving and gainfully employed in a well paying job spouse. :D
I don't really know enough about it, but there are likely more jazz performers than tuba, but there are also probably fewer tuba gigs…?

Not sure if any of that helps, and I think we are pretty far apart geographically, so that could make a difference in terms of what's available, but those are just some thoughts.

Definitely ask away if you have any more questions!

Oh wow, you're smart for learning piano first! That is kicking me so much right now in school.
So are you a band director and private teacher?
Yes, I am currently majoring in music at community college so I can transfer to a university. I haven't decided if I want to major in tuba or jazz performance though. What are your thoughts?

First was piano for a few years then started violin in fourth, flute in 5th; stopped flute in 8th and now teach strings. Did some trad music for a bit too- a mix of Irish, Quebecois and New England contra tunes.
Taught band too my first year teaching- even french horn and oboe.
I wish I'd continued with piano longer, but my teacher stopped teaching and that was about the time I started violin, so just never got back around to it.

        You are majoring in performance?

      • Fate0555

Nope. I play just about every wind instrument but, sadly I don't even play piano or guitar. Haha what do you play? xD
