      Movie day!

Went over to a friend's house last night and amidst the fun, we rented a couple movies. After watching 'em both, we popped in another and promptly all passed out at various points in the movie. After 3 hours sleep, we woke up and chatted, but I needed more sleep (yeah, I'm a wimp). Went home, slept for 5 more hours and decided to start a movie marathon while I cleaned a little, did laundry, whatnot. Here's the movies, starting with the three from last night:

Love and Other Disasters - Actually enjoyed this one, just didn't care for the ending too much. Seemed like someone turned over two pages at once. 4/5

Scenes of a Sexual Nature - Only thing going for it was the odd event of seeing Ewan McGregor as a gay guy. 0.5/5

      WayDownTown - .........................what....................the.....................smeg??? 2/5

Meet the Robinsons - Eh. 2/5

Santa Clause 3 - Please, God, kill this series! 0/5

Underdog - Can see what people like about it, no reviewability. 3/5

Blue Sauce - Another Ewan McGregor movie, very long and dry. Who'd have thought for a surfing movie, eh? 2/5

Various episodes of "Red Dwarf" - Tee hee hee. 5/5

The Day The Earth Stood Still (Old version) - Kinda enjoyed it, actually. Now semi-interested in seeing the remake. 3/5

      Reality

Many speak of escaping reality, self included, but tonight I got to thinking. If we escape FROM this reality, we must escape TO a reality.

So what reality would we go to in our minds if it weren't this one?
      What changes do we desire?
      Changes of others?
      Changes of self?
What impact would these changes make?

When I ponder that, I realize it's possible! In this reality! Maybe not to the extent we fantasize over, such as being able to fly or manipulate fire or things fantastical and the like. But for more realistic goals, things aren't so far-fetched.

The end to pain. A better physical build or ability. The start of a long-desired love. To have someone to love, someone to be loved by. A change in an unbearable situation. All are possible... with effort.

So why don't we put forth that effort? Are we afraid things won't go according to plan? So what! Look back. How many ventures to obtain your desire have turned bad? They may not have gone as hoped, but did it turn out well? I just went after a sous chef position with every intent to get it even though I knew I wouldn't. But I still tried, and that got me on the path I'm on now. I'm being trained at that job, gaining experience while still being able to pawn the troubles on someone else, the rightful owner or the position. And this will turn out better later on.

Do we not know how? Either figure it out or just start trying.

Never be resigned to live this life, this reality, this torture. Always strive for better. Don't just sit up at night and think of what could be or could have been. Figure out how to claim it as yours. Create your reality. Tailor it and let it tailor you, both will make the other better and build them up. You're gonna go far, kid, trust and see.

      Weekendings

Thanksgiving Day - I woke up at noon, served the Thanksgiving dinner special at work, closed early then decided what the hell, I'll stay up for a Black Friday stop.

Friday morning - I stayed up after work, sat in the car from 2am to 5am watching Firefly, and waited in line for an hour. Got my odd item or two, went home, slept for 2 hours. Worked at Duffeys then straight away drove to the Springs. Helped cousin with her computer, had spaghetti with fam and went to hockey game. Air Force Academy won 4-1 despite having 4 idiot refs watching the whole thing.
Drove treacherously home in the snow and went straight to a friend's place. Had a few drinks, played some games, and went on home bout 2am.

Saturday - Worked at Duffeys and killed a couple hours before heading out Downtown. Went to Comedy Works with few friends and had a blast. Can't remember half the jokes told, but was great at the time, as is all stand-up, eh? Took the lightrail home and slept nice and well.

And that catches us up, eh?

      Serendipity continued

Last night I was texting the friend whom I had loaned the $150 to last week. Due to a series of unfortunate events I had followed since meeting her, she ended up in a rough spot. Suffice to say it would make it more stressful than most. So I told her to ignore the debt and focus on the trouble. I figure, I never anticipated the money, had no plans for it. So no big loss if I give it up for a good cause, helping another.

      Well... turns out....
I got called into the chef's office where the Executive chef wanted to let me know that the finance office had made a mistake in my pay rate since my 90-day review. So I was actually supposed to be making a quarter more per hour. So not only is my pay going to increase, I'll be getting an extra $280 on my next check in retro-pay.

      Isn't unexpected moolah fun?

      Hopes shattered, fascinated with shards

The Exec Sous called me into the office today shortly after I clocked in. He confirmed an email I had gotten previously about me no longer being considered for the open sous chef position. Soooo, yeah, I'll be where I am for a little (kinda) and still pull a double-employment status.

However, with the show of purpose that was applying for the job, they are going to have me shadow the new sous chef, take their place on their days off, and basically learn how to do the job without actually having the job. Yes, it kinda sucks to not get paid more for it, but money isn't the only reward. This will be great experience to put towards future opportunities, and since I work for Hilton that opportunity may not be too terribly far out there.

Besides, I'm quite happy to stay on the line, keep learning there, figure I'll give it another few months in the changing locale, serve my time. As great as it would be to go on the fast-track, I know the quality grows with length spent learning it... to a certain extent. Odds are come this time next year, it'll be time for another change.

      Serendipity

      Well today was quite serendipitous.

Yesterday I was trolling around CraigsList and figured what the hell, responded to a few listings of people looking for people to hang out with (none of this NSA or hook-ups stuff). Got to texting one person and we decided to go for brunch today at Paris on the Platte. Now I'm kinda wondering how it'll go since I had $5 to my name.

HOWEVER! I got a check in the mail while I was at work, payment owed to me by Hilton for when I quit/transferred to my new job here in Colorado. Total about $193.

So I cash it on the way to the cafe this morning, meet up with her and enjoy a very good breakfast sandwich of lox, cream cheese, and capers on a toasty bagel. She forgot her wallet, but that didn't matter as I intended to pick up the tab anyway. Now that I could cause of the check!

We talk for an hour or two over our quad-shot lattes (was feeling that one later...) and a couple people asked if we parked out back, cause they're towing people. Well guess what, my car didn't get towed... but her's did! Oh crap oh crap oh crap, money at home, not enough anyway, gets paid today but can't get to work, the whole nine yards.

Welllllll, Sior just happens to have the rest of that check he had no idea he was getting. So I offer it to her, $160 (keeping some cash for gas till payday), she calls her boyfriend for help with the other $30, so we drive across Denver to meet him on his work break, stop at her place to get her wallet, then back to the opposite end of Denver to get her car.

So it really was a fun experience, lucky that that check came when it did, and of course I'm the kind of guy who will do that for someone he's known less than 24-hours. Like to think I'm a decent judge of character.

So she gets paid today and we're set to go back to Paris on Friday. Talk about a fun start to a friendship, eh?

      Gears of War 2 is...

      Gears of War

      meets

      Tremors

without Kevin "I'm a shotty actor" Bacon

And is it me or does Carmine kinda remind ya of Doc from RvB? "Ya know, the helmets have air filters, so if you wore one, you wouldn't have to worry about the dust!"

This message brought to you by Bawls Guarana G33K BEER! Oh yeah, a good caffeinated root beer!

ADDENDUM I - Tee hee, great line. "I'm afraid you have woken the Sires". Yeah, trust me, it's not a good idea to wake a sleeping Sior. We all have bad temperaments when woken. Let's see.... Half way through Act 3 (of 5, of course) right now. Achievements are easy so far. Trevor, if you're reading this... get on Live so we can do Co-Op! That or next weekend we'll have to have a play date to go through. Instead of going through as Dom like the first game, you just have to go through on co-op with Gears 2!

ADDENDUM II - Yes, I cried... well, not so cried as teared up at that certain part. Man, I need to read the book. Why? Cause so far almost nothing else has been revealed about the story! Cliffy B promised questions would be answered! C'mon!
