    • People be crazy!

      Gar_Hardt

I used to believe you won't meet crazier people with insane expectations than old people in bargain shops (like the ones I used to work in eurogiant ). now after working in my new job in house graphic designer in a printing press I think business people may actually be worse.

I had to explain to someone today how we couldn't design multiple sized posters, flyers, key rings and t - shirts in the next hour for them and print off 200 A2 posters, 100 A3 posters, 10 A0 posters, 3000 flyers, 600 key rings and 40 t - shirts in the next 3 hours. When I said we have a 2 day tun over for design alone they just turned and walked straight out.

Now I know that was the most unrealistic of the expectations I had to deal with but I find it all amusing. "People seem to think we sit waiting for them to walk in." - My colleague

In saying all of this I am still loving the job and the novelty hasn't worn off yet, and I am hoping it doesn't. Still doesn't look like it is going to either. So fun times! Also being in the print industry is fun. Didn't expect to like that part of it all.

    • Fantastically Odd Day

      Gar_Hardt

I was woken up this morning by my friends ringing me and asking
      "Hey, are you awake?"
      "....Yes..."
      "Good stay that way!"

5 minutes later I get another phone call

      "Hi is this Michael?"
      "Yes"
"Great, do you want to come in today?"
      ".............Into where?"
"Oh sorry, job interview. We will give you a trial day, pay 10 euro an hour and see how things go. It's for a full time, graphic design job."

Obviously I said yes. Traveled up to Dublin, sat there and the first thing I do is get given a calendar to do that has to be started from scratch and done in 4 hours and to goes from September to September. I thought sure, easy. Then he said the customer will be sitting beside me the whole time... ah fuck balls .

Got that painful job done and a few more after that. Either way they liked me and I start tomorrow. So now I am fully employed Graphic Designer for a printing press. Next task, successfully find a 4 bedroom house/apartment in Dublin. I didn't think that would be the hard one.

Just as I decided to go to bed when I realised one of my hard drives is not working. I have no idea why either. I did give it to someone the other day to copy things off so maybe something happened when they had it. I have no idea.

Oh this also happens to be the hard drive I have every photo I took since I was about 13 up to RTX and Canada this year. Well over 30 gigs of photos alone. It also has all of my old design jobs saved onto it. Just as I was about to add them all to my portfolio. So more fun times there. Everything else I can live without or get again.

I usually have backups of all of these but recently my sister moved to canada and I gave her one of my other hard drives thinking I can survive without backups for a month or two till I can afford a new hard drive. I bought that new hard drive 2 days ago. Still waiting for it to arrive. Timing always had a way of delivering a swift kick in the nuts to me.

Now I did also study computing in college and I am quite good with ripping everything apart and putting it back together again. This doesn't mean I am nervous as fuck about doing open heart surgery on a hard drive. This is new ground to me. I know what to do...just...yeah...shit.

I am never going to assume I will ok without backups for a couple months again. Wish me luck...

    • Gregory's Dreams

      Gar_Hardt

Gregory was old. Not just old mind you but old old. He had wrinkles that'd make grown women blush and little girls cry.
You see the reason Gregory was so old was because he lived a long time. So long in fact he now had 23 great grandchildren who had 2 children each. Luckily this isn't a math test because that would be a horrible time to bring that up.
Now the reason for Gregory's age being so important is because in Gregory's mind this was the year he was going to win gold with his crew in the Olympics in the bobsledding event.
They had being practicing since the ages of 9 his team, Wally the spring chicken of the group, Dennis the great Zookeeper (he had a wooden leg, long story involving some very confused zebras) and Patrick.
      Just Patrick.
He was a boring sod but quite a fast runner so...they kept him. Now Gregory and his team flew all the way to Montreal where this years winter Olympics where being held.
They had Old Betsy with them too. That was Gregory's wife. Wonderful woman and one hell of a cook. It was her job to keep Samantha rolling well. Samantha (their bobsled) was named after Samantha Jackson. A girl who lived down the road from Patrick when they where in their younger days. Dennis ran into her one winter with his sled and knocked down her snowman along with herself. She made him promise any sled he ever rode from that day forth would be called Samantha.
They trained hard and slow and made progress and then their time to qualify finally came. They all went up to the top of the hill and prepared to ride Samantha down the slope. Gregory as their driver knew the slope like the back of his hand. There was one wrinkle in particular that looked remarkably like the slope.
They waited for the gun shot as their signal to start. *BANG* Dennis slowly began to run, Patrick turned around wondering who called him, Wally was already sitting in the sled for some reason and Gregory began to push as hard as he could. Not getting anywhere he looked up to realise Dennis was running without pushing the sled and with only one good leg couldn't stop himself before falling and sliding all the way down the slope.
Gregory looked down at Samantha and then over to Old Betsy, that's when Betsy help up a banner saying "We've got 4 more years to practice!"
Next time Gregory thought, next time.

Yes, this is the best use of my time.

    • So Busy!

      Gar_Hardt

Back in Ireland and already busy for the next month with design jobs. Not complaining just didn't think the next month would be this busy so quickly.

First DYT (Droichead Youth Theatre), there is....so much work. I am their graphic designer so....lots to do. they have 2 plays upcoming. One next week and the other in a month but I had this great idea of a big online promotional thing throughout the next month that will keep me busy with them all throughout that. I don't mind I'm quite looking forward to it it's just at a time where everything else in my life is busy.

On top of all of that I am trying to get my portfolio finished for a job interview I have next week. That is nerve wrecking to say the least. It's for a big and busy printing press in Dublin so...yeah nerves wrecked about that one. Also the first proper interview I am ever going for a job in the field I like as opposed to a supermarket or something where I am just looking for any money.

So for the next month my social life is gone and i shall be busy designing and drawing like a mad yolk. Also I may have one or two other freelance jobs on the side. I think this sound like I am complaining but this is me happy about it all. Just wrecked from...well everything in life the last while. Travel, weddings, job hunting, working design jobs at night, working my part time job during the day. Tired....so tired. but happy tired.

Firstly, this is just a quick journal as i'm about to hop on a plane, saying a few things I will be doing a proper one in a week as I am now off to Canada to visit my sister in Toronto. Then back off home on the 16th.

Everyone I met who I knew beforehand from the forums it was great to meet you all and it was a pleasure. Then for all the people I met at RTX weather be it at the Firehouse, the exhibtion itself or SideQuest ye are all great and look forward to future interactions.

Then I really enjoyed the event itself. Had a blast, was a great expo for my first expo ever and I think Austin was a brilliant first experience for America. Enjoyed every second of it.

      Gar_Hardt

Haha, featured user and going to spend it all day on flying to Austin for RTX and RTSideQuest . Well not all, I do have to sleep for a bit... maybe... Either way I think the timing is brilliant.

And yeah, so I'll be at RTX and all of the SideQuest events so if anyone see's me roaming about the place do say hello, I look like my picture only less vectory and a bit more stubbly. Note: I'm short you may have to look down. Looking forward to all the people I am going to meet.

Also if anyone throws a comment in my general direction don't be offended if I don't reply, I'll try to if I find wifi on my travels and a shout out to all my Firehouse Buddies! See ye soon.

Oh and it's @Barbara s birthday, so if you didn't you should wish her a good one! (Or it was...time zones and all I dunno.)

Is FU a random thing? I have no idea how it works.

It's in my bedroom somewhere but though no fault of my own (it was all my fault) my room may be a bit messy. .... This is going to be a fun filled evening. May pack for RTX as I'm looking for it. Kill two birds with one stone.

Oh found it. Haha, it's ok people you can go about your business again it's all good.

Hey, just wondering what Panels are on peoples "I AM GOING TO THIS!!" list? It'd be nice if people don't want to go to one alone we can organise groups in advance.

I'd say I'm jealous you're getting to go to RTX but truth is I'm even more jealous that you live in Ireland... it's my favourite place on earth. Have a Club Orange in my honor sometime. ;)
