      Long time no update,

So Friday left Microsoft (for the time being probably be back there in the not too distant future), and made a break back to contracting which I think is much more me (really not a very good full time employee)

Had an offer today for a 4 month contract writing a search engine for a retail system that figures out what products to display as 'relevant', basic idea being that if you click on 'Buy Bread', things like Butter, spreads and milk will appear.

Decided to take it as the other opportunity was for an investment bank doing some clever trading system that offers advice to their traders (basically BUY!, SELL!!!!!!). But it's just taking forever, had an interview a week back and they accepted me for the second interview, but it's taken them a week to arrange it for tomorrow and now they've moved it to next week (with the caveat of 'maybe') sheeshhh.

So Last year was a kind of good year. Moved house, got a new job, got fatter, shipped a product (MSN Movies), drank too much. So this year...

      1. Must get fit again, buying a new moutain bike (Cheryl is getting one too), and join a gym

      2. Actually make a start on thedailywtf book, both me and Alex have been pretty crap

      3. Finish of the Tutorial D parser, so that it works has a prototype.

      4. Work less (the last three months have been 50+ hours, and for four weeks I was pulling in 80-90 hour weeks)

      5. Cause less accidents,

      6. End of this year, find a new internal job over in Redmond.

So, today I can barely type as my wrist has been pretty much sprained, and my forearm to my bicep and triceps have been wrenched out of place.

      How, may one ask?

It all stared with a BBQ with the local scuba dive school, Ads roughly my size stared play fighting with me and well, he lost due to Vulcan death grips and my threat to throw him in the Thames , so, after several pints of Guinness we end up arm wrestling and he looses three times fairly closely. All well, I am the man.

So here comes the fatal conversation.

Ads: So how do you do it?

Me: a little trick, it’s to do with twisting the wrist in on itself, say you have Cliff sized biceps, but little… (Never finished my sentence, I was going to say. If you have big hooding biceps but small writs, you can bend their wrist in on itself and win by defacto because they have no way to transfer power from their upper arm to their lower arm.

Ads : Hey Cliff; Paul wants to take you on :

The Entire Pub: Awe, shock, Silence.

Cliff: [extends his index finger]; Ok, wrestle my index finger:

Me: [argh, his wrists are as thick as my bicep]; erm ok

Ok, yeh I lost To his index finger.. Within ten seconds he bent my wrist into itself and then just slammed my hand into the table, three times in a row, in every direction, I even reversed arm wrestled and I lost within thirty seconds, because he just simply bent my arm in a direction it should not go.

So, It turns out than Cliff ‘Duke Nukeum’ Newcomb, was the UK Army champion for arm wresting, and came third in Europe, and once came twenty third in the world, while drunk.

A little scrawny 18 year old was with us, and said; ‘Hey Cliff I will take you’

While I received silence, he received ermm, Laugher.

Another Guy : Cliff just shamed cluster [me], who dives with twin 12l 300bar cylinders for the fun of it, are you sure you want to do this?.

      Cliff: extends his little finger.

Less than a few seconds later, screams of pure agony as the poor kids wrist is folded in on-itself… poor kid, he screamed like a girl before his hand hit the table.

      Did that stop him?

      Hell no,

He said ‘My left is stronger, so I will beat you with the my other arm’

I’ve never heard someone’s arm make an audible ‘crunch’ before.

Book : Going well, Slowly trawling through the 594 WTF's from thedailywtf.com for material...

once we've done that, we then have to trawl through seval hundred thousand posts for good comments.. I just hope I don;t pick up any bad habbits from the really bad code I'm reading.

We've booked up for a holiday in Egypt, I plan to get some diving in... Problem is all my dive kit is made for Winter conditions in the UK, time to go shopping (don't tell cheryl... ohh wait damn, she reads these)

work : Thursday started early in the morning, the power went out in the Soho area at 2pm, came back up at 6pm... I didn't get out for work untill 6am Friday morning, but we got the last few major bugs and features complete for the new site to go beta on Monday.... Very almost W3C compliant, but as usual the adverts screw us up.... We may have to drop down from XHTML Strict to XHTML Transitional for a short while untill we can put preassure on the adverterisers to sort their crap out....

Spent half my time Thursday / Friday changing elements named in upercase to lowercase to validate.... that sucked.

Went diving a few weeks back, all went well.

Err. Having preliminary disucssions with Alex from www.thedailywtf.com about putting a couple of books together, they will be unique. I really should pick some English grammer skills sometime soon.

That's about it folks, quite busy at the moment with work (between xbox tournemants, coke tasting competitions.. the normal everyday stugg)

I'll have a better update in a week or so, (I have one almightly amount of journals to catch up on... yes Dingo, you are the prime offender smiley0.gif

The new site I'm working on, should be going live soon... Which is kinda cool! It was available to the public as a Beta for a short while, but there were data quality issues with the data provider, so we had to shut it off untill our partner sorted the problems out.

Still working away on my 'True Relational Model' language, the Lexical Analysis engine is mostly complete and I've mostly completed the code for parsing data definitions into in memory objects... It's all been quite plain sailing up till now, I've started to think about the how to code the manipulation language. I haven't even started to think about transaction management and type support yet, even when once I finish it, it will only be a proof of concept and not a full production system language... some way to go methinks!!

Off diving on Sunday (going to Swanage for the day!), and Thursday this week (back at the inland quarry Stoney Cove)

Just had my cylinders filled up with Nitrox for Sunday, two worrying things happened.. they have sat in a garage for the last few months, and when moving them I noticed that the manifold was a bit loose..

Me : And yeh, can you have a look at my manifold, it's a bit loose
Cliff : Are they full at the moment?
Me : about 200 bar in there. (that is, 200 x normal air preassure)
Ads : HOLY MOTHER OF ********
      Cliff : <dive bombs behind his desk>
Ads : That won't ****ing help you, they will take the whole back wall out!

The second worry, is that the cylinders ended up with a mix of 42% O2, 61% N2.. Which means, I can't actually get to the bottom of the wreck, because if I did so I would end up with a ppO2 of about 1.8 and a ppN2 of 2.4 ... (that means, I am breathing in 180% 02 and 240% Nitrogten)

The Nitrogen content isn't so much of a problem at that depth, you don't really feel Nitrogen Narcosis until you hit a ppN2 of 3.2, or 320%... The problem is the ppO2, Navy divers dive to a pp02 of about 2.00,... but they die lots. Us techie divers are a bit more slef preserving and don't often dare to go above a ppO2 of 1.6..

For two reasons, 1.) Central Nervous Toxitidty 2.) Oxygen Tiredness which can actually make your lungs bleed...

So, solution set my Watch to sound off like a rape alarm if I break 28m ... which means I will have to skoot along a couple of meters above the wreck.. hey ho.

You know C++, right? And we are always looking for people for better OS integration (we are short on windows devs too!), so if you are interested, I'll let you know what you should do to at least inquire.

I'm working on the download manager and external protocol handling. The download manager is getting a complete overhaul, so it should be pretty nice in Firefox 3. For external protocol handling, we hope to hookup web protocols so websites can register that they can handle protocols such as mailto, webcal, etc.

I've also inherited the maintenance of our sqlite wrapper, which is, er, interesting smile.png

With MS. I've done two interviews so far, and both times I just completely lost my train of thought. That never happens for me, so I am a bit flustered about it. I've got another chance here in February though, so I'm going for it.

I've got three friends who graduate this year, and all of them have jobs at MS once they graduate. They all keep telling me I'd be perfect there, so I just need to get my head together for the interviews.

Cheryl keeps trying to convince me to go and see Silent Hill (she loves horror movies), I can't stand em (I can never sleep afterwards.. and I get all jumpy while watching them)

It's not scary. I'm not a horror flick fan myself, for those exact same reasons, but there's absolutely nothing to make you jump throughout the whole movie. Every time there's a monster, you see it coming. It's creepy, but it's not scary.

And yes, we got tickets to Nickelback. Floor tickets, actually, which we'll try to trade with someone when we get there, because who doesn't want floor tickets? Well, except us. We're not "mosh pit" type of people, and the floor's "standing room only", so it's just a gigantic mosh pit. We'd rather sit down.

Actually, that's a really good summary on what it does. It's better overall, but right now it's making my Firefox take forever to load. I need to go through and check over the code again sad.png

It doesn't help that I'm writing it in javascript, so it gets interpreted. I just wasn't up for the jump to C++ for it yet.

      Coupling (The original British one)

I'll give you that one. The US remake was horrible.

It really seems like most British TV was good 20 years ago, and hasn't really gotten any better since. And when you do get a decently good show, the US rips it off and remakes it... which usually makes it a little better, actually.

The Avengers movie was such a disappointment to anyone who's seen the TV show, though. smiley1.gif

I was amused. I watched the first 4 eps. The first one is by far the funniest, because the main premise of the show is funny. After that, it's only funny about half the time, because they had to spend more time on the jokes. But I liked it.

You might want to get that looked at... karma tends to leave a pretty big infected scar when it bites. Something about the venom...

It is a whole lot easier to dump the contempt on the unsuspecting. Even though the people that pay us are the ones that deserve it the most, if we gave it to them they'd suddenly stop paying us, and that rarely works out good. The Tech forum is a good place to vent that on everyone else.

Besides... they're just so damn stupid in there sometimes... I had a field day last night bitching at people. It was fun. smiley0.gif

cool congrats !.. it's good to see people with a related education moving into IT (there are way to many people out in IT at the moment who don't grasp the fundamental principle but just simply trained to use some tools)

Yea.. i so know what you mean here. And its because of that simple fact that im acutally kinda happy in a way. Because unlike them i know what im talking about and can swoop in and woo and wow them.. thus hopefully landing me a job. On the other hand, its those people who get the good jobs.. you know.. the people who shouldn't have them in the first place.

A funny story.. in my old high school on my final year, i was able to do enroll in a work program as a class (i had all my credits) and well i worked with the on school computer technician. Overall the guy was really a good and nice guy (just really wierd) but what was funny was a year before he was the schools janitor. They just paid for him to go to a hardware and windows class and a Novell netware class (netware 5 or 6 at the time). He knew what he was doing partially, but kinda fits what you said.

The more you keep posting about that database stuff, the clearer it seems to get for me.

    • comrade693

yeh, it's a bit of a problem trying to explain database concepts without resorting to mathematical notation and formal defenitions... I resorted to using English to try and get the point across as I thought expressing the problem any other way would just generate confusion.... though I'm not certain that basics like a predicate and proposition are fully understood... which makes it even trickier to explain what a database is really doing...

      ho hum,

Yeah. I'm actually learning that stuff now, so I was happy to draw something from it in real life. Understanding that they of math clearly demonstrates why you should not have a null, but then if you don't know that, it is vague.

We've got meat and fish counters in most of our grocery stores... but it's all meat that's just one step shy of being prepackaged. Most of it ends up wrapped and stuck on the shelf anyway after the pseudo-freshness of being in the meat case has worn off.

And I do feel sorry for the poor lobsters all crammed in their little box. They're not clean, they're packed like sardines... it's unnatural.

I'm actually lucky that I do have a local butcher shop right around the corner from my house, but I never go there. I should, but they're only open 12-5 on like Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, so it's really hard to find time to get in there. They'd be open longer, I'm sure, if they had more business.

    • dingolord

Decent sausage is always better (although our stores aren't anything like yours... it's harder to find fresh stuff here for a decent price), but when you just want a snack, popping some frozen links in the microwave makes for an excellent munchie. smiley1.gif

I'd love to be able to make my own sausage stuff... but I'm way too lazy and too bad of a cook to pull it off. We always get prepackaged stuff and then work around it. Like tonight - stuffed pepper casserole with italian-spiced pork sausage. The other night was smoked sausage with peppers and onions.

The whole prepackaged culture in this country makes it hard for a lot of us to be good in the kitchen like you guys. smiley3.gif
