      Stardate 201102.1

Nearly a year since I last wrote in here - popped in a couple times since then to check up on things but haven't really had the time until today to really update. i figured I oughta start the 2011 overhaul on my entire web presence.

Lots of new stuff to tell, but the major piece worth taking from this is THE iNDiE MACHiNE.

If you haven't heard about it yet, you will be VERY soon.... and I don't just mean in this journal.

Shortly after my last journal post in March 2010 (having only just moved to the big city of Toronto a few months prior for an internship), I lost my bar job when the owners closed down early one night to "paint" and subsequently took anything worth any money and skipped town. i had been off that night helping a friend of mine cover a fund-raising gig - he DJ'd while I shot photos/video of the bands on the bill that night. The whole ordeal was a blessing in disguise (aside from me being out a couple hundred bucks) as it freed up my time for THE iNDiE MACHiNE: at the time a weekly radio show my friend David had been running for almost a year.

We joined forces, started having a band on the show each week for an interview and having them perform live on the air - which we then filmed and put online as an in-studio video series called "Sessions". We soon afterward started shooting live acts in our "Wired" series, started doing full-on interviews with bands and covering musical festivals that would swing through Toronto.

After the failure of HUD (the gaming journalism organization another friend and I had tried to start up - which was quickly met with scorn from the Canadian gaming blog community) I was really looking for a strong outlet to vent my very being into - this was it. THE iNDiE MACHiNE now has a fully revamped website (designed by yours truly), with daily updates, weekly features, our aforementioned video series', a second live broadcast radio show, and plenty more new ideas in the works which I am not at liberty to discuss yet as some of them are PRETTY big.

I'll keep you all posted, but in the meantime, check out some of the awesome stuff we've been working on.

      Guitar_King

Back in August 09' a few friends and I tried to start Canada's first gaming news organization - ala GameSpot/IGN - but dedicated to serious gaming journalism....

I'm happy to report that amid delays in production (and frankly just a plain lack of time), HUDisplay.ca is finally live in its v.2.0 BETA iteration and the mission to destroy the world of gaming journalism is already underway.

    • News Abound - Lots of Projects On The Go

      Guitar_King

Well as it turns out I've been spending the duration of the summer in Toronto as the Editorial Intern at Exclaim! Magazine - think of it like as close to a Rolling Stone as Canada has, but it's free. Lots of great fun to be had there: I manage the CD review database, so if someone sends in a CD in hopes of it being reviewed, I'm the guy who unwraps it, gives it a listen and hands it off to the appropriate editor. Needless to say I've found a bunch of great little musical nuggets I wouldn't otherwise have found.

      --------------------

Aside from that Stratasfear Productions has been slowly chugging along - I put together two new shorts since the last time I posted here. The first was a quick piece I put together as my submission for The Rocketboom Institute - a science/tech video blog that was holding an open casting call for an anchor. Basically the video runs as an introduction rant ala Rick Mercer (he's kinda like the Canadian Jon Stewart) and devolved into a "Top 5 Reasons to Hire Me" before turning into a campaign to, essentially, save me from a life of boredom in Northern Ontario. Needless to say they ended up hiring a skinny blond girl from the UK (as many could have predicted), but I'm hoping someone somewhere saw it and liked it.

The "Save Stephenson Price" Campaign - video at bottom of post

The next video was a parody music video piece I put together of the Flight of the Conchords song "Business Time" entitled "InDesign" - about the Adobe print publication layout software of the same name.....making sure to maintain all of the sexual innuendo that existed in the original. I'm really happy with how it turned out. :)

InDesign Music Video - video at bottom of post

      --------------------

I also recorded a rough acoustic cut of a new Tridia track, entitled Wake Wanting Wanderlust. It has a sort of jazzy quality to it, and I was extremely happy with how the song turned out, though the recording itself definitely needs some work.

      --------------------

Several friends and I have also started up Canada's first Gaming News Network: HUDisplay (Heads Up! Media)

After our first public appearance at the IGDA iPhone developers conference last week, several of the larger Canadian Gaming Blogs took it upon themselves to begin berating us - claiming that we were ignorant of their existence as per our About Section and such......however this is because they fail to accept the fact that they are not gaming news organizations....they are gaming news blogs....which by definition alone is entirely different.

Needless to say we've been getting a lot of flack - but at the same time the "bad publicity" has resulted in the Canadian Gaming World being made aware of our existence......not a bad trade off if I do say so myself, though my colleagues and I found ourselves wondering why these bloggers couldn't seem to process the idea of shameless self-promotion (by talking about our organization as though we are the best, it will ultimately lead to us being the best). Bands do this all the time - many proclaiming that they are the greatest gift to rock ever......that's the point....it gets your name out there.....showing the persona that you have. Why don't more gamers/developers/organizations have these personas?? Things could be far more AWESOME!!!!

Anyways. if you're a Canadian gamer/blogger/developer/enthusiast who wants to get involved, drop us a line at HUD@HUDisplay.ca If you've already got a project yourself, we'd love to promote it too, so be sure to send us a link and let us know what you're working on.

      Guitar_King

So yeah, I'm totally just realizing this now......

Lots has happened since my last journal entry.....
      - I saw Watchmen.......(God I hope Snyder's director's cut doesn't have those irritating period-songs),
      - I just watched the new Terminator trailer for the umpteenth time.........NIN was a perfect choice for it, I can't get over how amazing it looks,
      - I regrew the awesome beard in my profile picture,
      - I'm only several weeks away from completing my bachelor degree,
      - I'm working on a documentary I plan on pitching to Much Music about the Canadian Indie Music scene,
      - I'm single again,
      - I'm writing more songs so that the EP will be ready by summer
      - I'm currently writing a screenplay for Half-Life (YES, THAT HALF-LIFE)
      - I'm waiting to hear if I got into grad school for Film Production at York University,
      - I just worked out the kinks in the new stratasfear.com website,
      - I just pulled another all-nighter (to work out said kinks in the website),
      - I'm going out of my mind....

.....wait I guess those last two were common occurrences during my last journal entry too....

check out the new website, songs, and half-life at stratasfear.com or, check out my latest cinematic feat of excellence and spread the word......

    • I am the greatest songwriter ever!!!

Apparently I've made it to the semi-finals in a national songwriting contest....

so I need everyone who reads this to go and vote for "Tridia - YKK"......immediately

      as in now!

If you don't know me.....out of the goodness of your heart, take 2 minutes out of your time to go and vote. You don't even have to listen the song if you don't want to (though I'd highly recommend it.....it's the most unbelievably awesome thing ever - you might not look at the world the same way ever again!)

If you do know me.......go do it and I won't do something diabolical to your family pet/sibling.

Batman would totally go vote, so you should too.

If you thought the last update was a long time coming, this one must've killed you waiting - in retrospect 2/3 of a year is a little ridiculous. I guess for this sucker I'll try to briefly mention a whole bunch of things with little headers to separate everything neatly so you can get through it relatively quickly........and then we can go back to being friends again:

      .
      .
Fine, there's a $20 in your left coat pocket.....just give me a couple days to put it there, k? Peachy.....Now then, where shall I begin.....

      School:
Year 3 went really well - I had some really sweet classes, like "science fiction literature" and "history and critical analysis of the music industry", that on top of the radio and TV courses that were mandatory for third year journalism at Carleton University and I was laughing all the way to the bank.

I actually had a professor this year who won a Pulitzer prize......that was pretty sweet to have that kind of talent picking over my writing and giving me tips on how to improve. I actually didn't have a single dud teacher this year (unlike last); but unfortunately my favourite film professor is now retired, so I'll have to find some other class to take in place of whatever else he would be teaching this coming year.

I actually apply for all my new courses tomorrow morning, so I am in the midst of trying to narrow down my concentration now for my future career in journalism (I’M GOING TV ALL THE WAY BABY........and then I'm going to whore myself out to Discovery Channel or National Geographic.....Rolling Stone if they'll take me).

Right now I've also come upon a dilemma where according to the school I don't qualify for renewal of my scholarship because I haven't met a 10.0 GPA (an 80%) - they claim I am sitting at a 9.5. This is because they calculate GPA values at Carleton by assigning each class a letter grade value and then assigning each letter a GPA value from 1-12 (no decimal places). These 5 numbers are added together and divided by 5 to determine your GPA at Carleton.

On the contrary, using mathematics with actual percentage values, the lowest possible GPA I could have by using the lowest range values attributed to the letter grades is a 80.05%.......meaning the system they are using is costing students at the university thousands of dollars in scholarships because, like administration at the school says, using the percentage system is "too hard" (their words, not mine) in comparison to the “letter grade to GPA†system.

Not only that, but any classes where you actually did receive a percentage grade (in my case a 93 and a 97) are completely disregarded because the current system uses range values for the letter grades. A B+ is a 77-79.9, but an A+ is a 90-100, so it doesn’t matter if you got 100% in the course, you basically just lost 10% in the calculation they used and you’re down to a 90. Those marks can help pull up the lower ones so you meet the scholarship cutoff, but here they’re rendered useless.

This is a battle I am ready to fight to the death, because I WILL be getting my scholarship back......whether administration likes it or not. The student government here has been trying to decrease the cutoff from a 10.0 to a 9.0, but with my new-found information I'm hoping we can get the entire system changed so that it's actually accurate!

      Social:

After hooking up with the girlfriend in October (9 months on Tuesday) I haven't really seen much of my guy friends, only occasionally when I run into them on campus or when we make plans that don't actually fall apart at the last minute.

I also seem to be drinking significantly less now - not sure if its the girlfriend or the lack of friend interaction that is doing it to me; however the funds that went towards that activity seem to be reappropriated into something else.........I wonder where......

I also finally upgraded my Sony Cybershot camera for a Canon 30D - this sucker is a monster machine (see my new profile pics), and I’m hoping to get my website fixed up adequately soon so that I can show off some of the pictures I’ve been taking with it. I still need a telephoto though……my birthday’s in two weeks, wanna buy it for me???

I’m thinking Canon’s f/2.8 70-200mm â€" It’s about $1300 CDN, so I think I’ll be saving for a while, but the computer upgrade will have to come first because this beast is on it’s last legs (my motherboard is TOAST â€" it likes to eat USB devices)

Gaming and movie wise I haven’t been too busy â€" I took the GF to see Wanted opening night (big Angelina fan) and we were both pretty pleased, lots of changes from the book, but still a really solid movie. I saw Iron Man the day it came out and man that blew my mind all over the theatre floor â€" I still have to get her out to see it before it leaves the Cineplex (she's really excited to go), except the times it plays at are really stingy. I beat Bioshock last week and I was very satisfied with that; and I’m about halfway through GTA4….I’m hoping to put some more time in on that soon….though that time may be eaten up by a job soon enough…

No, not really. A Dan-Fic is the colloquial for a fan fiction including members of Dan's JP3 Page.com as characters. That was the first message board I joined, years ago. The term was coined before my time and it's become second nature to me

That said, the fic I mentioned is not an entirely Dannish Dan-Fic. While there are three characters from the site, it's being written so they have no past history or even their nicknames before the fic. That all happens during the fic.
