Yup. Purdue. Like West Lafayette, Indiana! Main campus and their world renown engineering program. Top of the country for Agriculture. (somehow my degree is in this school of thought)

      • Havoc1

Purdue like Indiana? Whoa! Didn't know you'd headed that way after the PRC.

No break in service for me. I ate crap for 2 years on staff. I head to take a BN S3 job out here in WA in 3 weeks. Crazy, isn't it? Parole is finally coming, and I'm almost sad because I have so much other stuff going on now. Go figure.

Should I say, "No one likes a quitter!" ? smiley10.gif Did you get reinstated as Major? You back with the Rangers? Bottom line: are they treating you fairly or did they reinsert the big green weenie?

Thank you! I'm doing pretty well! 3.75 GPA at Purdue Engineering. I'm mentoring the student veteran's organization on campus. I handle special cases for the 'deputy director of adult students and veteran affairs' so he can concentrate on other stuff. I get to be a student peer advisor leader for the veteran community. Enough grants and pension money I don't have to work. My son has adapted to our final move perfectly. My wife is almost done with her associates degree and picked up an internship at Disneyworld. Other than being a "deployment widower" this semester I don't have anything to complain about. smiley0.gif

        PS
If you ever hear about anyone headed to Purdue, give them my info. We have a pretty good vet center here and we can get a future or prospective student everything they need for success. Super excited about helping everyone make it to a degree and up the veteran alumni rates!

Thank you for the ideas, we did the Myrtle Beach already, but I will look into Ravenrock and Uwharrie. We can travel a little bit. I don't know if you remember, but unit was stationed in DC for a year. I spent almost too much time, if you can spend too much time, in the Smithsonian museums. The last time I was in the Air and Space museum, a buddy Marty, my wife, and I spent 4 or 5 hours there just walking through over and over again. I pictures up on my Facebook with one of the first VACR posters.

I will see about stopping by Huske Hardware this weekend. Luckily she is already a gun nut, I can thank my father-in-law for that. As soon as I get my back cleared, I will look at TS. Thanks again.

Afternoon Havoc, so you were in Bragg for a while, is there anything you can think of to do that would be fun for an event with the wife. I have taken her to the parks for picnics, and camping in the woods. I have not found a lot more to do around here that does not break the bank, any thoughts would be appreciated.

      • Havoc1

Unfortunately, between being a company commander or deployed and having kids, our activities there were focused primarily on small-time family stuff. I was a big fan of the camping and outdoors stuff. Ravenrock and Uwharrie have some great spots. Whether you're able to travel or not (not sure what breaking the bank would be) changes some things. Myrtle Beach is cool to visit and do touristy stuff, though other than the beach and mandatory kid-centric stuff there, I didn't really care much one way or the other. Head west into the mountains. Start at Uwharrie, which is 80 miles NNW. Then head further west into Pigeon Forge or Gatlinburg, which is where I went to clear my head after the last deployment.

DC isn't far to the north, and if you can't find something to do there, I don't know what to tell you. If you haven't done the Smithsonian and the Air and Space museums, you're missing out. Speaking of which, take an afternoon and go to the Airborne and Special Operations Museum (ASOM) in Fayetteville. Very worthwhile.

In terms of restaurants, I recommend Huske Hardware. Great beer! Paddy's is a rockin' good time most weekends if you're into the bar scene. There's also a Blues & Brews festival every year downtown, probably in July. Watch for stuff like the circus or decent shows coming to the Crown Coliseum--tix are usually pretty reasonable.

If she wants to get into shooting, or you want to get her into shooting, take her to 37PSR up in Lillington. Best range I've been to, bar none. Frankie and the boys there run a tight show and have all kinds of niche classes from "Girls With Guns" to their own shoot house and 2- or 3-gun matches, cowboy action shoots, and all kinds of other stuff. If you've seen the videos of my kids shooting and moving, that's where we did it. Show some respect and listen to what they say, because you're talking to some very experienced shooters from both sides of the fence down on Bragg. Can't recommend them enough for family shooting and tactical shooting opportunities. If you really get a wild hair, look at the courses that are offered in the area, both by 37PSR (Raiden Tactics), Grey Group Training, and TigerSwan. I shot a 3-day pistol/carbine course with TS just as I was PCSing (I literally left the range, handed my rifle to a very understanding PSG, signed out of the battalion, and started driving--don't worry, I left the platoon a coupla cases of beer). Hands down the best shooting I've ever done. CSM(r) Brian Searcy and his crew are pros.

If she's into it, look at the posted schedule of jumps and get her to Sicily DZ to watch from the bleachers. If you see a JOAD, which is a Joint Operational Access Demonstration, it's basically the full-meal-deal, done in the daylight for everyone to see. Usually, all kinds of big-wigs show up and there are static displays, simulated strafing runs, artillery fire, etc. Hell, I busted my kids out of school to go to one of those so they could see what Dad did at night.

There's some, off the top of my head!

Don't know if you ever found the free video editing software for editing your gopro footage, but I just started using this. Fairly easy and straight forward to use.

It was the first site that my mcafee site secure gave the thumbs up for a google search of "video editing software free", just make sure you un-check the box to install the optional bing powered search bar for your browser. Took me like 5 minutes total to figure out and cut a 45 second clip down to the decent bit.

Traditionally, berets were worn by the Rangers (black--now tan), Special Forces (green), and Paratroopers (maroon), and signified many hundreds and thousands of hours of special training, and the status that went with that.

I completely get how the specialized forces would be totally disgusted with the decision to switch to the berets. If it were me I would be outraged, as I'm sure many people were. Taking that status symbol and giving it to everyone doesn't automatically mean that they are as qualified or skilled as the person who went through hundreds of hours of training to get to that level.

I can tell you that few uniform errors piss me off than a guy who can't wear his beret right.

When I was in JROTC in high school, I would throw tantrums if I saw someone wearing a beret incorrectly. Not only does it look stupid but I felt it was disrespectful to the uniform to not even try and put the effort in to make it look good.

The beret is impractical in many cases, in that it doesn't keep the sun out of your eyes, takes two hands to put on, is like an oven on your skull on hot days

I loved the moment I was allowed to wear a beret in JROTC, but the memory that stays with me even more is how nearly unbearably hot it would make me when the sun was really shining. I remember the first time I wore it on a hot summer day and all I could think of was "wow I sure am glad I don't have to wear this every day" (we wore our uniforms every Wednesday throughout the school year). It also always amazed me how something that could make my head SO HOT on a warm day would also allow my head to get SO FRIGGIN COLD during the winter. Never made sense to me.

I'm glad the Army listened and finally went back to the way things should be. I will say, though, that in formal uniform the beret sure does look good (when worn correctly).

It's a paved running track, but there are some short steep hills in there. I spent most of the ruck in the grass to stay out of the way of runners and also because I know the only time that really counts is uneven terrain. It's a start anyway. The grass is flat-ish, but you definately notice a difference.
