    • What to be thankful for

      Havoc1

I'm thankful to be home. But more than that, I'm thankful for the barrel-chested, steely-eyed killers out there who are NOT home today, so that I can be. I'm thankful for those who support them in their fight. I'm thankful for my association with them all.

Since I can't be out with my Brothers today, I'll enjoy being with my family. Next year will be different.

Done with NTC rotation, just trying/waiting to get home. Hope your Veterans Day was all it was supposed to be. I was either getting "mortared" or freezing. Or both. Wouldn't have it any other way.

For my Veteran friends, take 15min to read Mark Bowen's article in Vanity Fair about Chosen company's fight at Wanat in Nuristan. It's a hard read about the realities of ground combat, battlefield calculus, and the human cost of a war where there sometimes is no single "right" answer. The paragraph below is the most concise, most elegant description of the Infantryman's "why" that I think I've seen.

      m.vanityfair.com/politics/features/2011/12/battle-of-wanat-201112?mbid=social_mobile_FBshare&t=Echoes+from+a+Distant+Battlefield+%7C+Politics+%7C+Vanity+Fair

As it is with all soldiers who die heroically in battle, his final act would define him emphatically, completely, and forever. In those loud and terrifying minutes he had chosen to leave a place of relative safety, braving intense fire, and had run and scrambled uphill toward the most perilous point of the fight. A man does such a thing out of loyalty so consuming that it entirely crowds out consideration of self. In essence, Jon Brostrom had cast off his own life the instant he started running uphill, and only fate would determine if it would be given back to him when the shooting stopped. He died in the heat of that effort, living fully his best idea of himself.

Well, looks like that's it for a few weeks. So I'm playing planes, trains, and automobiles tomorrow. Basically, the rest of my brigade is going to an airport where commercial planes don't fly. Therefore, I have to fly to a place about 60 miles down the road and make my way over there. I ended up calling the folks at the USO, who are amazing, amazing people, and one of them recommended a shuttle service. Sure enough, the shuttle will get me from door to door for under $60 in the middle of the night. I was either going to hitchhike or take a taxi. This is somewhat better.

On another note, the USO people, upon hearing that I was getting in at 2230 on a Friday night, immediately offered to have someone come in and open the place up for me to stay the night. Just for me. Did I mention that they're amazing people? I still get choked up thinking about the folks who turned out at Bangor to greet us on the way home from Iraq. Damned fine charity to give to, dontcha think?

Best of all, I was supposed to show up a day late. Now, because of some weird shift in the flights, I show up a day early. How is this great? Well, it's not. In fact, it sucks. Now I get there early, so my dumb ass has become the advance team for my crew and will be playing the game of trying to get them all taken care of for billets and life support. Excellent. Maybe I'll ram one of these ass-hat drivers down here on the way to the airport and unfortunately miss the last flight out of town Friday night.

Tampa has been nice. It's been about 5 years. I forgot about all the smoking hot chicks in sports bras and spandex running on Bayshore Drive. Being amongst the Air Force again has been strange--I have even less in common now than I did 6 years ago. Of course, my friends at CENTCOM and SOCCENT were good to visit too. And who would have guessed that I have roughly the same sense of humor as the SEALs in my class? Yeah, on second though, I'm not all that surprised either. As soon as I made a couple of dick jokes, inappropriate commentary in front of the class, and made fun of sailors, we got along famously.

      Adios until after Thanksgiving!

    • Again already?

      Havoc1

You know what sucks about deployments? All the damned training and time away from your family BEFORE you finally leave. Headed to Tampa for a few days of classroom training, then to the National Training Center at Ft Irwin, CA from a couple days before Halloween until Thanksgiving. Matter of fact, I'm actually flying directly from Tampa to NTC to join up with my team the day after they arrive. Lame.

On the plus side, I'll come out of this spin-up with some oddball hard-to-get training that'll make me even more uniquely useful to some interesting organizations.

So...anyone in Tampa? I have approx 3 nights free this week.

Savages, that they are. The first time I lost a friend I was stunned with disbelief. The whole world seemed upside down and without justice. To this day I half expect to walk around the corner and see them, but it never happens.

There's a time for grieving, and that's after you put one tween Hadji's eyes. Don't get careless, but go after them smartly when you can. They're not the brightest. You'll get a warm glow when you nail the bastard, but Duffy will still be gone.

I wish I could say it gets easier losing them after time, but it doesn't. You just suck it up and live with it. We'll hoist a beer or thirty in his memory when you get back.

I was stupid and when asked on one of the medical forms if I had ever taken medicine regularly for something wrote Ritalin for ADHD- So I turned my stuff in, got kicked back to me, they needed records of my evaluation (poorly written scrabbles of a doctor writing about a 6 year old me being fidgety and not wanting to sit still on the uncomfortable exam bed/thing, whodathunkit) submit it again, kicked back 2 weeks later need info about my prescription records, submitted, kicked back about a week later- they say they need more records of my prescription record but they already have everything from my record that Martin Army has on file- so we highlight the records showing that the last time I got a prescription filled was nearly 3 years ago and only lasted 2 months I prepare a statement saying that those records are the most up to date that the only prescription medicine I've received and taken since high school was benadryl... and I've been off ritalin for over 2 years and that I don't need it.

Almost 3 months now and still no close to getting approved, so the originally planned schedule of sending me to Air Assault, DCLT, and then Airborne before school starts up-
Right now our staff are just trying to get my waiver sped through to keep as much of the schedule on track-

My experience with single point slings is that it'll always hang shitty, unless you bungee cord that muzzle to your dick. I do have a recommendation (and it's a two-point sling!) for you, though.

The VTAC Sling comes to me as a highly recommended sling from a Delta Operator buddy of mine, and I just ordered my own OD Green one. Works like a three-point, except easily adjusted for various holds/stows.

EDIT: Oh yeah, it'll accept that push-button sling point of yours, so you can doff that hoss in a big fucking hurry if your rifle gets blown to shit (assuming you have enough fingers and/or limbs to crawl out of a 'sploded vehicle or building).

Nah, I just enjoy building them from the ground up. I would have liked to have gotten an upper parts kit and built that hoss, too, but as it was, the fully built DPMS upper was hanging on the wall at the gun shop, wheezing my name, begging to be bought.

So, in an act of humanitude, I totally liberated that guy.

I just ordered a Weaver-adapted sling lug and a quad rail to replace that hokey stock plastic one. Should arrive in about a week. Still gotta get that goddamn lower parts kit, though. Everyone is sold out. I'll probably just go ahead and place a backorder on the RRA, if it's within my remaining price range.

    • pt606

What're you planning for a trigger group?

I ended up pulling the quad off my DPMS and putting it on my RRA, then selling the DPMS with regular handguards to bikemancs for a pretty good deal.

I'm staying standard with the trigger group. I don't plan on doing any match shooting with this thing, so it only needs to be good enough for the zombie, robot, or Mexican uprising (whichever is applicable).

What I'm saying is that I'm staying stock.

That's an AV-2055 satcom antenna. Channel 16 on the MBITR I have programmed satcom mode, so if the shit hits the fan and we're in an E&E situation, I pop that open, point pretty much straight up, turn to Chan16 and start talking. I left the attenuators out because they narrow my beam. With just the web open, it's a wide beam and can hit the bird pretty clean... I'm a comms geek at heart. My Lt calls me the "mad scientist". I think it has to do with the hair.

Most of that stuff I kept in the bug out bag in the Everest (Ford diesel SUV... nice truck). I carry the pistol, mags, one frag, a block of C-4and timetrain. Oh, and Pointblank bullet proof vest. Semi-success today. Tomorrow should be the last bit. I'll post it in my journal when it's all done.

Oh, and I feel so violated with the alert rape, too. LOL smiley13.gif

What do you think I do here on the daily? Working for my agency has its coolness, since we get all the best flashlights (if you catch my drift), but it also has its suckness. We're caught somewhere between being police officers, security guards, mercenaries, and soldiers.

Sure, we get to play with all the cool toys, we get to do all sorts of cool training, but the system is inherently flawed, and a lot of it ends up being a bureaucratic assfuck. Knowing you and knowing my agency, you'd probably end up strangling somebody, and it'd be the wrong somebody.

If, however, you don't mind earning six figures to train, prepare, and wait for a fight which may never come, all while watching endless amounts of movies (some pirated) with the caveat that it's a big goddamn boring clusterfuck, then send me your resume, bro. smiley8.gif

I wasn't sure if you would see my response in marshal's journal:

I have no doubt that he excels in his job and I understand that having a certain mentality is critical. I'm simply saying don't write off counseling before trying it. And yes it takes time to find the right counselor. Perhaps the one he saw wasn't right for him. For me, I wanted someone who had no idea who I am. Someone that i had a clean slate with. Marshall might want something different. He might want someone who has an idea of his background and what he goes through. That's why people need to shop around for counseling like they do for finding the right pair of jeans. It's all about finding someone that fits with you.

Have you ever strained or severely pulled your hip flexor? I think I pulled mine pretty badly. I can hardly walk up the stairs. It's so bad that I had to lean against a wall and pull my leg up with my hands in order to put them in my rain boots. It hurts to move so I thought rest would help and now it hurts even more. I'm afraid to move around because I don't want to cause further injury but I'm afraid to just sit here because when I do finally move my body is so stiff that any leg movement is cause for tears.

Not sure what to do on this one. Any words of advice? I put ice on them but it doesn't seem to help much.
