    • Supra in critical condition...

      IA3471

The other day someone ran into the back of my Supra as it was parked on the street. The damage is primarily the driver's side rear quarter and suspension. Still waiting on his insurance to come take a look. The irony is it was parked out front of U-Haul, where I had rented a truck and trailer, which I was just returning after picking up and putting in storage another Supra, an '89 as well, which was to be a parts car. Hopefully the quarter can be replaced and the suspension rebuilt without them trying to total it out.

      _DSC0748.jpg

As far as I am concerned, they should have no problem getting my car fixed. Least they can do seeing as the driver was 100% at fault.

Full album of pictures is here.

    • Video Voyeurism

      IA3471

So, with all the celeb sex tapes and all that nonsense these days, I had a thought. One of the key elements to the legal cases about this is the reasonable expectation of privacy, another the prior knowledge of audio / video recording, and implicit or explicit consent to said recording.

Usually, some sleaze tapes his sexual adventures, and gets in trouble later for sharing the tapes, or even having taken them without consent. Big money lawsuits, even criminal charges (video voyeurism alone is a crime in 9 states so far).

You can get one of these signs, meant for studios, etc. for about a hundred bucks:

      ONAIR1-example2.jpg

If you put this (ostensibly) novelty light in your bedroom or apartment, it's presence and being turned on can be used as a very legal defense that the reasonable expectation of privacy is void, and the consent to being recorded is implied.

      WHY ARE PEOPLE STUPID?

I know some people hate Best Buy. I'm sure some people think protection plans are a waste of money. In some cases I'm sure that's true. But I just had a great experience with it, and thought I'd share.

In late 2008 I bought a 47 inch LG 1080p tv from Best Buy for $1500. I paid an extra hundred-and-something for a 4-year protection plan. A few months ago, I started having trouble tuning the tv on. Every few days, it would have to be turned off and on again. This began to happen more and more frequently, until almost any time you wanted to turn it on you had to start a half hour before you wanted to use it, and try it up to 15 times. So awful we brought our other TV down from the bedroom.

One call to Geek Squad last week, during which all they asked for was my serial number to determine the part needed, and today, giving me a 2-hour window in which they would come, two very professional and knowledgeable technicians came and replaced the entire power supply. No charge, no paperwork, no nonsense. No shipping it off anywhere. No bringing it for them to look at. Just quick, courteous, professional service.

And for a very reasonable price for peace of mind. I recommend protection plans for any expensive technology that may reasonably need fixing, and that is expensive to replace if damaged. $50 printer? Forget it. Expensive camera that may get dropped? You can drop an $800 camera in the water and they'll give you a new one. Isn't the hundred bucks worth it for that?

      Just my $.02

Just got back from an evening of drinking, eating, and oh yeah, seeing Roger Daltrey. Tommy in its entirety, plus numerous Who hits and solo hits. The man may be getting older, but he's still got it, and how. So much energy! After an almost 3-hour set, he seemed ready to keep going for another hour easily.

If he's coming near you on this tour, go see him. Even if you're not a big Who fan.

What would it be without fireworks? Some of my friends have a tradition of camping out on Boston's Esplanade directly across from the fireworks barge to watch the show. They're quite serious about it. Alpha Team arrived at 10:30 the night of the 3rd to claim our space, and laid down several tarps. Bravo Team (my team) arrived at 6:30 am to relieve them and set up the tents, tables, and coolers. Around noon came Charlie Team with the food and decorations, including cardboard cutouts of the First Family. A rather ridiculous setup, to be sure. Even briefly led a story on Boston.com.

But the fireworks are the real attraction, obviously. The location was a bit tough for photographing, as we were extremely close, so in addition to the smoke, the bursts were almost overhead, and my widest lens is only 18mm (10-24mm Nikkor is in the works, when i have the money...) Also, I don't have a remote shutter release. Still, I got a few decent shots...

    • 150 Years

The 150th anniversary of the American Civil War is upon us. Since July of 1998 I have been a member of a living history unit based out of Pittsburgh, PA, Company I of the 116th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. Our commitment is to historical preservation, sharing our passion for history, and educating those who seek to expand their knowledge. Members of our unit come from all walks of life, and from as far as Ireland and Australia. We attend many events each year, ranging from private camp and drill weekends and parades to full-scale anniversary events. The 5-year events tend to be the largest, and the 150th is on track to be the largest ever.
July 23&24th will be the 150th anniversary reenactment of the battle of Manassas / Bull Run. So far around 20 of our members are registered. This event will kick off the 150th anniversary series in high style.
And so the long road of getting my gear together (need new pants, which is harder than it might seem). I just hope it's not rainy that weekend, Virginia mud is nasty stuff, and the Supra isn't exactly built for mud-bogging.

I am thinking about just integrating a clip mount into the center console. I will probably mount it at about a 45* angle as well.

    • burgundy

Yeah, never been a fan of windshield mounts for that reason. Maybe check out RAM mounts... theyre the only mount I have ever had that I truly liked.

    • burgundy

I don't use a car mount... usually just toss it on the passenger seat, or in the cup holder. When i get the truck done I am going to make a custom mount in the center console, since the droid is basically going to be my head unit.

For my list of Porters I wanted to have my all time favorite, Victory at Sea Coffee Vanilla Imperial Porter made by Ballast Point in San Diego for sure. A friend recommended I have at least one English and one Baltic porter as well. I took some suggestions in a beer forum I frequent, and just picked a few blind as well. It was a blast.

So, even though i have no money these days, I finally broke down and bought a pint bottle of Hobgoblin today.... and a six pack of Highland Gaelic Ale and a four-pack of Sam Smith's Nut Brown...

Yeah, I can't just drink it though. I'm waiting for a special occasion of some sort.. maybe when I get a new job!

Well, it's pretty well rotted out underneath. 14 years of CT winters before it was garaged, and then sitting since '74 doesn't make for a very pretty sight. Salvageable, but it'll be a very very involved process. Thankfully it's a pretty simple design, no intricate panelbeating...

    • burgundy

Thanks. I am surprised I am this bummed about having to sell it, with having just bought it mere months ago. It just has a ton of potential, and it bothers me to sell it that fast, without testing the potential. But, what has to happen happens for a reason. The next project I will be sure I am much more financially secure and have everything I need to do the project.

    • gadmr2

Yeah, its been a while, so it may have come down, but the last time I was there I believe it was $6.75. I usually ended up either getting Abita Turbodog or Smithwicks which were both around 5 or 5.50.

    • burgundy

They are overrated, but loneliness is far overrated too. And level 5 makeouts? Lol. Awesome.

    • IA3471

$6.75 a pint for Hobgoblin? Ouch. My bar we sold it at 5.50. Then again I never had to buy myself drinks there...

    • gadmr2

I've only tried the Fiddler's Elbow and the Scarecrow Ale. I wasn't crazy about Scarecrow... Fiddler's was alright. I haven't really seen many others available around here. For me, if I'm going to be spending $4 a bottle, or $6.75 a pint at the bar, I definitely prefer Hobgoblin over those two.

I've been doing a lot of cycling and elliptical machines for cardio, as well as swimming when I can. For weights, Ive been doing 20 and 25 pound weights for arms and shoulders, as well as seated row and lat pulldown machines. I do a fair amount of shadowboxing with 10-pound weights, as well as ab work with the same weights on a vertical incline bench (45 degree tilt, held by my feet, works the core really well).

The gym in my complex isn't the best equipped, but they've got the essentials. I just wish we had a pool.

Sounds like you will have a good time, and NYE with some Russians... that might get out of hand, haha.

And thank you. Its all small things now, so the updates might be a bit dry. You have been seeing them in the PYC forum, right? I figure I would just keep posting them there instead of my journal, as more people seem watch the garage than me. Half of it will be out to paint on Jan 8th, and the other half, hopefully the following weekend.

I am super excited to say the least. Won't be completely done til spring, since I have to do bed sides and a floor in the bed, but I have a junk bed to put on for winter.

Sushi-yaa is $10 All-you-can-eat sushi, and it's damn tasty. We usually go on Thursdays anyway and every Thursday across the street there's a VW meet.

Also there's Fuzzy's Tacos. The tastiest tacos with tons of different fillings. They have fish, beef, chicken, and idk if they have it anymore but around mardi gras they had crawfish tacos and quesadillas.

And there are lots of Sonics everywhere so you can take your gf to any of the many. Extra long chili cheese coneys taste fandamntabulous and a lime cream slush tastes like a key lime pie. But the lime cream slushes are hit or miss, some Sonics make them amazing, some make them rather poor. Also, if you want to take her out for a nice dinner, there's Texas Land and Cattle. It's kinda pricey, but holy mother of every good and tasty in the world is it good.

I was going to recommend Cuba Libre Cafe if y'all like fish and seafood more than steak, but apparently it's closed for renovations which is terribly sad because it has the best Caribbean food outside of the Caribbean.
