It seems like movies these days with their marketing spoil key elements of their respective films. Whether it's through social media marketing or just plain trailers in theaters, it's becoming more of a trend for movies to just blow their load before the initial release. I tend to take a 1 teaser only approach to movies these days. Sometimes no trailers whatsoever. If a movie has an interesting premise with a good director and cast, I'm usually 100% on board and don't need to see a sliver of footage. Then when I see the movie I tend to be blown away because I had no preconceived notions going in.
This post is generally going to be discussing the new Alien Covenant which releases May 19th. I 100% think you all should go the route of trying to resist all of the tv spots and trailers for Covenant and just films in general as it only creates a better movie going experience for you in the long run. But let's really dive into Alien Covenant and more specifically... the incident that just occurred 15 minutes ago from the time I'm writing this.
The first official RED BAND teaser trailer for Alien Covenant was released Dec 24th 2016. It provided a cool inside look at what we can expect from this new installment in the Prometheus trilogy leading up to the classic Alien. As far as teasers are considered I thought it was perfect and adequately portrayed the tone and basic premise of the film. I didn't need to see anything else.
Then came the Prologue, which aired on TV during Legion. This 5 minute video shows a snippet (probably not from the ACTUAL movie) of the characters we will be following in Covenant. It's a crew of couples that are going to colonize on this new planet. There's even an interracial couple, a gay couple, to help create a diverse company which is progressive and cool. The scene overall works (even though some of the editing is questionable), there's a nod to the scene in the original Alien with John Hurts character and the chestburster, and we even catch our first glimpse of James Franco's character which is dope as hell. This all lead up to....
...the official Theatrical Trailer that now plays before most movies in theaters was released February 28th 2017 and shows just enough to wet peoples appetite even more... DESPITE the last few seconds after the title appears. The scene with Tennessee and Daniels (played by Danny McBride and Katherine Waterston) I can guarantee you is from the last act of the film. And probably is a good indication that these two characters will be the final two to survive towards the end (they both still could die).
Seems like we're on track to get hyped for a new Alien film from Ridley Scott. And then... the TV Spots came. Oh boy did they come. In the span of like a few days, we got FOUR new TV Spots: Run, Pray, Hide, and Take Me Home. Now I am deliberately NOT embedding these spots into this post seeing as I didn't watch them and I don't think YOU should either. Obviously you can seek it out for yourself if you want more spoilers. Not only did 4 new spots release each with a new sliver of "spoilers", word and footage has broke out on the role of Dr Elizabeth Shaw (Noomi Rapace) from Prometheus. I once again will not describe the details on her role seeing as I don't know all the facts and believe it to be... say it with me now, a SPOILER. Jimmney Christmas what the hell is going on?
Recently at Cinemacon even, director Ridley Scott presented a scene from the film showing what sounds like the creation scene of the iconic Xenomorphs. It involved David the Android (Michael Fassbender) from Prometheus, Black Goo, and the Engineers. Why on Earth would Scott, willingly show that scene? What's the purpose of that? Why not let it be a reveal in the cinema?!
Finally though, the main cause for this post has to do with a recent Tweet that the official Alien Covenant tweeted out today. I can't remember what the tweet said since they took it down but the tweet contained an X-ray photo of one of the characters in the film. I will not disclose who, but if you search around enough on the internet you can spoil that for yourself if you want. In the X-ray photo we see what appears to be a baby Xenomorph growing inside the character. Now you could see this as a clever red herring conducted by the studio to throw us off and make us worried for this character. But moments after the tweet went live, the account deleted the tweet and now it's nowhere to be found on their social media platforms. People obviously have the photo but the actual tweet from the official Twitter has been taking down. This led me to believe that the photo is in fact... a HUGE GINORMOUS spoiler for said character. I was beside myself that this happened and I have no idea how to feel going into Alien Covenant now. I want it to be a lie and a red herring but I'm having a hard time believing that's the case.
What do you all think? Are you excited for Alien Covenant? What do you all think of the marketing strategies they're deploying? Are you remaining spoiler free? Lemme know in the comments.
Also they released this badass poster.
