They moved the days for RTX, and may run into the inservice days at the beginning of the school year. Don't know yet, school board has yet to finalize next year's calendar, but it's a pretty done deal. I'm not allowed to use my precious few personal days on those inservices.

However, that means I'll be spending a bit more on a family trip with the kiddos earlier in the summer!

Hopefully they will move it back to July for next year, so I can see everyone again!

It's been a while since I've logged in, because life. Don't worry, it's a good life!

I am supposed to be prepping for a 12 hour long day that is Parent-Teacher Conferences. Yep, all capital. I don't dislike conferences, I dislike the long amount of time I have to sit and wait between parents showing up. I think 8am to 8pm is overkill.

On the bright side, my oldest (who has Aspergers) started running cross country and is showing the most positive peer interaction he's ever had to date! He's getting good grades and good behavior reports from school, and hasn't had a single emotional meltdown in 2 months!

My daughter has been doing cheerleading, performing during the 3rd and 4th grade football games. She's now wanting to get involved in more after-school activities, and has started more hard-core begging for a cell phone to call her friends. And my youngest, who's 4, has been doing football skills practice. Is now calling out "Hi!" and calling other kids his age by name and proudly telling the adult closest to him, "He is on my football team."

And it all comes full circle back to me realizing that everyone is more confident if they feel like they are part of something bigger. It definitely made me feel a massive urge to log in and start typing.

I know I'm not as active on the site as I would like, but I would just like to state that being a member here is awesome. I miss everyone and I can't wait until next RTX!

My DSL internet is finally fixed! At the cost of cable.

The CenturyLink guy used a bucket-truck to reach the top of the phone pole near the house, discovered the problem, fixed it. Easy right?

The guy hit the cable wire with the bucket and knocked the cable from the pole. The pole is near the side of a parking lot attached to the alley, a parking lot for a church. A guy from the church come out ask him when he was going to be able to move his truck because there was going to be a funeral soon and they needed the parking space. Called the cable company to tell them that it was disconnected, and that the wire was on the ground. We coiled it as best we could, but if they didn't get someone soon, there could end up being more damage to it than there already was.

Interesting business plan. Well played, CenturyLink, well played.

So, I think I do okay with traditional drawing. I love abstract, and just doodling junk in my sketchbook. I've recently decided (due to watching some very talented members of this community) to test my luck on the computer. The past two days I attacked this picture in time for my son's birthday today. Rushed, yep, but he likes it, and I think it turned out alright! Used Corel Painter Lite, and it took a bit to get a handle on some of the tools, but I think I have the basics covered now!

Two Pics, I'm posting the finished product first, then the first sketch layer.

I have to get serious, because I love this community. And since Rooster Teeth is a content provider, this site could potentially be effected.

This video is a great explanation of what is happening at the moment, and I really think everyone needs to see this.

    • Hey everyone!

I've realized I need to stop apologizing when I am gone from the site for chunks of time. I do end up updating and checking out some of the current journals everyone has posted when I get on, but for the most part, my kids wear me out and I end up falling off the social media radar. It's totally worth it though, they are adorable!

I have a new job next year at a smaller school. I am super excited and can't wait to start packing my stuff in there (giggity).

It's getting closer to RTX (yay!). Last year, I wasn't able to go out in the evenings, but this year I will be able to! I've purchased SideQuest tickets and am going on the booze cruise put on by @dame and going with my boy toy @mckev7

I need my adult socializing time! It's healthy for me.

While I'm on my topic skipping journal: Does anyone play Wordament?

The past few months can be summed up with this example from last night: Got pajamas on my youngest (who's 4), walked into the laundry room, came back in less than a minute to find him naked and giggling on his bed. My little prankster.

So there's more than that, and I really do love my life, but I will need this vacation that RTX gives me!

I can't wait to see everyone!

    • Birthday for a boy with Autism

      IDivideBy0

This story hits so close to home. I apologize in advance, but once I started writing this, I couldn't seem to stop, it's cathartic.

There's a story circulating here about a boy with Aspergers who told his mother he had no friends to invite to his birthday.

Skip to the bottom paragraph if you have a case of TL:DR, to get to the point of my journal lol

As some of you may or may not know, my oldest son has a a mild form of autism called Asperger Syndrome. Those of you unfamiliar, for most kids, they look fine, and for the most part, Aspergers kids act just fine.
Where they struggle is with flexibility and changes. If something doesn't go the way they expected it, it causes a total breakdown, and can even turn violent. But because this is an invisible 'disability,' he doesn't get that careful treatment of others that he sometimes needs. I often get told I should just spank it out of him, and until my other two children were born, my parenting skills were often blamed for his "bad behaviors."

Example: My son asked for no pickles on his hamburger. When he got his hamburger, it had pickles on it. What would you have done? Picked the pickles off or asked the restaurant to remake it. But my son, he freaked out, couldn't get over the fact that, clearly, there wasn't supposed to be pickles on it. It did not go as the scenario he had in his head.

Now, my son is very smart. He consistently makes honor roll. He can memorize things that even I can't. When he was three he told me in a store, "Mommy, buy those shoes, they blow air through your toes with every step." That was when I learned he was memorizing commercials on TV.

The social side is something completely different. Until this year (new school), he struggled. In Kindergarten, he freaked out the first day of school because he didn't know what was going on, threw his shoes and tried to run away during recess. That was the first bad phone call I received as a parent, on my son's first day of school.

It didn't take long for him to be put into Special Education, for behavior reasons. Before this year, he was suspended on average 3 times a year for violence, yet kept up his A's. He was so unhappy, and didn't like to go to school. Kids started targeting him very early on, he was so easy to rile up, just change a rule of a game to see what my son would do. He wanted to stay inside during recess, stay in the office during lunch with his Para. Because they talked to him like he was a "real person." He would come home crying after an incident and say, "I just don't know how to be good, why can't I be good?" Then write apology letters (without being told) to the people that mattered to him, his teacher, his para, and the principle. If you asked him what he was thinking during one of his meltdowns, he would say, "I don't, I'm mad and it's hard to think."

This past year has been amazing. We moved him to another elementary school within the district, as a 6th grader. I didn't realize the extent of what he had been dealing with before, because kids aren't trying to rile him up at this school, because they know nothing of how he acted before. He was able to actually try out those coping techniques he was learning on other students. He was also invited to his very first sleep-over (which had me a nervous wreck), and it was great!

      TLDR, skip point.

This is long, but I feel good after typing all that. It made me realize, this boy in the news article, hasn't gotten the 'do-over' that my son has gotten. Please help by reading that article and wishing that boy a happy birthday!!

Last year I was only able to go to the Bar Olympics. And my buddies are going for the drinking in Austin, and I'm a great excuse to go. I'm planning on going to as many SideQuest events as possible, just to get a chance to meet more cool RT people!

      • mckev7

That is extremely weird...SideQuest must be a big deal if they are just going for that. Which days were your favorite?

Yes, went last year. Had a great time! The SideQuest is put on by some guys who are also Guardians, and if they can do without sleep, I guess I can too!

I'm going with people who aren't Guardians, and and some of them aren't even going to RTX, but they're attending SideQuest. Strange? I believe so.

Don't let Chuck Norris do that to you... Stand up to him! if you need me I will be hiding around the corner

I do plan to go to some of the SideQuest events. I am just not sure how well it will work out (being a guardian and all). Did you go last year?

Hi Kevin, I'm Karin and I like compliments.

I really do wish defining division by zero could be explained by, "Karin." But I think Chuck Norris called dibs. Darn him!

Are you planning on attending SideQuest there too?
