Haven't posted anything here in... 3 years. So what major life event has occurred that prompted me to post again? Well back in May we got married :D Our cake topper was a bride/groom pair of Stormtroopers :P But last weekend, the judge finally signed off on the step-parent adoption paperwork. The biological father has signed away his parental rights, and my name is replacing his on my daughter's birth certificate.

So last night was interesting, and I think this is the only place I can say something and not worry about it

My girlfriend (yeah, that's right) managed to bum a ride from a friend so she could drive out to the panhandle to see me instead of waiting for me to come back this upcoming weekend (every other weekend is 3 days). So about two hours away still, Caitlin finally gets David to pull over on the side of the interstate so they can check the radiator. He pops the hood, and the engine bursts into flames.

Total loss. Her cell phone, her favorite outfits, her laptop, which was filled with pictures and videos of her 2.5yo daughter as well as enough evidence to put her ex-husband away for quite some time... all gone. They'd been running late as it was, but answering the phone at 2300 and just hearing crying before "the van's on fire" wasn't exactly what I was looking for last night. Shakes away any tiredness that might've set in, though.

They're both fine, but really weren't able to save anything. Down to the frame. I pushed my luck flying down the interstate like I was, I was lucky the deer decided to stay on the median. She calmed down and even started to smile after I met up with them.

She's asleep now behind me at my place, already getting over the loss, laughing about it, but she's safe and that's all that's important. Later I'm calling my boss to explain what happened and say why I won't be in tomorrow; I'll be taking them back myself and returning that night. Short week, so I'll have three days at work before I turn around and drive back again this weekend.

      --

This might've sounded a little disjointed, I'm just going with it. She's safe, her family knows she's safe (although this wasn't on the approved "ways to earn brownie points" list, it's since been added) so in the end everything's fine, just needed to vent somewhere.

Prayers/vibes/oscillations/thoughts for her are welcome, she'll need some help while we're apart this week.

The defense contractor I interviewed with back in September passed me over for the original position, but created a new spot and called with an offer yesterday. I start early January :-D

Hmm, must mean something important happened...

Yeah, was my birthday, but that's not it....

Oh yeah, I'M GRADUATED BITCHES! My 5 years are up at RIT, managed to get my GPA back over 3, and now I'm waiting for magic to happen since I'm in a field (MechEng, Aero/Defense) where nobody wants to hire entry level positions :-)

So for now I'm bumming at home, but will get a local job and apartment if nothing picks up soon.

Drive took 19 hours this time, too much rain and stupid people in the Carolinas. VT also had a game that let out as I was passing by so that screwed up traffic for a while, too.

Also, I hate gas stations that turn off their pumps at night.

    • Well, didn't think I'd ever do that...

But I've stopped watching the Stargate thread. Only a couple people around from the original crew, it really is just a bar thread, and I check RvB only twice a day or so which results in too many replies to even bother trying to follow a conversation.
It's just a matter of time before I just let RvB die.

Tonight was capture the flag. 10 flags were scattered around campus, and we had 2.5 hours or so to retrieve and deliver them to the drop-off point. I was with one of my squad mates and the ROTC guys. Within a few minutes of receiving the orders, we already had one flag with us, and we were within striking distance of a second. ROTCs went out to snag it then came back, but by that point zombies had come to the building and we were holed up for a while.

Some time passes, and the fools left a door unguarded. We ran behind a large group and made it back to the apartment we started from. We got a hold of two other squads, and made our way to another flag, sticking to the tree line. This all took well over an hour to do, movement was fairly slow going on the tree line, and we held a ridge line at a low crawl waiting for a second squad to arrive. The flag we took next was unguarded (turns out, one of the frats was driving around in an SUV, stealing the flags, then coming back with them later, putting them back in different places. We managed to get a license plate number and report them to Campus Safety).

After that was a rather easy jog to the next location, where we decided we didn't feel like dying. So we moved back, found another flag (which was one the frat moved) and after a brief pause inside, with an hour remaining we made the choice to haul ass out to the parking lots in an effort to take the long way around in the open. I found out after the fact that one of guys did fall behind, and after we got away, the horde turned around and descended upon him. He emptied both of his guns, but couldn't stop them all.

We actually managed to get all the way back to the residential side of campus which is all connected by tunnels. The second squad we had met up with had one of the guys from my squad, and a bunch of idiots. Because of this, when we started to pick up the pace towards a door, the idiots decided to bolt. This kinda screwed us that were covering the rear, because humans rushing the door is *always* the trigger for the zombies to rush. If we had walked to the door, or even kept at the light jog, we would've been fine, we had done it multiple times already.

So one of them singles me out, I get him the chest with two socks before he can tag me. He decides he got me anyway, so we're arguing as I keep running. Unfortunately, I wasn't running as fast as I should've been at that point, and another one bolted up behind be and clamped my shoulder. I gave the kill to him, pissing off the first guy. So not as glorious and epic of a death as last game, but it was still a good run. I only have a lab shift tomorrow and no classes, and I don't get off until after the extraction mission will end, so if I didn't get taken out tonight I would've "died" by being left behind anyway. My squadmate I'd been with all night got taken out as well, also due tot he idiots bolting for the door. Unfortunately, he was holding onto one of the flags, so of the 4 we had with us, only 3 were recovered and delivered. Two other flags were dropped off by other squads earlier in the night.

So for me the game has ended, although Thursday night is an acceptable end for me, especially since working was going to get in the way and effective was ending the game for me tonight anyway (getting onto campus from my apartment is a non-issue). So I can add another 6 kills ("stuns") to my list, and I'll get to try one last time during the spring game before I graduate.

      Om, nom, nom, nom

Due to massive amounts of complaints, the rules were changed before tonight's mission. Now we can't be in the academic side of campus between 2200-0400. My squad basically lives there during the day, and that's where we launch from. So when the email came in at 2100, we immediately called one of the admins to confirm that we had to gtfo.

So the hike began. We took the long south loop around campus, through the apartment complexes, close to and through the tree lines. Passing cars were harassing us, even the campus ambulance was doing 3-pt turns in the road by us with full lights going. Multiple times we had to duck into the woods to avoid zombie joggers coming down the path.

As we were approaching the sign-in location, we met up with the ROTC guys, who filled us in on the full mission. We had to get 30 people into one of the designated "safe zones", which were to be treated like buildings. The tennis courts, baseball field, or soccer field. So we doubled back, turned around again and headed into the woods after we saw that the road in was covered too well. Found ourselves a pot camp in the woods, and they guided us to the bridge across the streams that flow through there (cuz potheads are just cool like that). We got to the back of the tennis courts, and were in the process of scaling the 15-20ft fences (doors were locked) when we got bitched at by some faculty member and were shooed away. One of the admins told us everything was good, we could go home. We called another admin, he said the opposite.

Insert 15 minutes of standing around, finding out wtf was going on.

So the decision was made that the objective was not complete, so we were going to move in. At this point, we knew of a dozen zombies in the parking lot. We picked them off one by one. As we got closer, we noticed the 20 or so guarding the entrance. We made a stand and held for a while as we weighed our options. We worked our way to the north corner, and when we had the chance, turned and ran like hell towards the baseball field.

Nobody followed, and when we arrived at the field, the horde was nowhere to be seen. Turns out, a large human group had locked themselves into a neighboring field, and the horde was guarding them. We had seven people over the fence before anyone got within firing range, and they were easy picking at that point.

Twice, small groups made it over the fence with minimal losses, but there were still many people stuck in the field. At the stroke of midnight, we were told we had succeeded, even though we did not have the 30 people within our field with the the roll call sheet. There was a secret mission we were not informed of, and by keeping people in both fields, not only did we guarantee an extraction mission at the end of the week, we had deprived the horde of an extra 12 hours on their lifespans. We also had free passes to get back to our homes, with no threat of attack. We had gone from one of our worst moments to the best outcome we could hope for (aside from fewer losses, of course).

Current counts; 123 humans, 299 zombies alive, 55 zombies starved to death

... did not go so well.

For the humans tonight it was a hunting mission. We had to find and shoot a specific zombie, one of the originals. At mission start, there were 222 total. He was spotted early on, and we were tracking him all over campus, but we couldn't get close enough to him. We only had a two hour timeframe to get him. There is no indication that the mission was a success, but we have not yet received word that it was indeed a failure (as it is currently assumed). [failure means anyone who wanted to be a starting zombie, becomes one if not turned already]

My squad and another (mostly ROTC guys) met up and moved around for a while, eventually splitting up in a mix. One of my guys got taken out due to his cockiness and arrogance. He chased one outside a doorway, and got sideswiped by one that was hiding in the shadows.

We found the final location where they decided to make their stand, and unfortunately for us, the position has the high ground and a large field of view. Small zombie detachments were dispatched to discourage us, and while we could have easily taken them with no losses, we still decided to move around to approach from the other side. It was at this time that we noticed a larger detachment moving to head us off, both from the potential assault and from our access to safety.

It was at this time that we called the mission a scrub for our squad. Mission objective switched to Escape and Evade, we made for the treeline on the border of campus. The track stars took off, I headed into the woods alone, and three or four others wandered off into the night as well. As of this writing, it appears all have returned to their domiciles safely. I followed several deer trails and switchbacks through the woods, with only the full moon and the sound of traffic to guide me. It took a half hour to clear the treeline, and another half hour to make it back to my apartment.

The current zombie count is 286, leaving only 195 (40%) alive.
