    • Yay for snow!

Happy springtime, everyone. For those fortunate enough to know a good wet spring snow, here's something literally passed down through the generations:

      Snow Ice Cream
Lightly pack a tumbler (20oz is good) with clean snow.
In a mixing bowl, blend 4 oz milk, 1 oz maple syrup, and some vanilla extract to taste.

Pour your syrup mix into the tumbler and stir until it's the consistency that you want -- add snow if it's too slushy, add more milk if it's too dry.

Dad used to whip this up when I was a tot, and my kids love my version of it today.

Oh, and Bush has something to put in you.

    • An interesting question

      JavaMan

I was having lunch with a friend last week, and he was describing a school fundraiser that he'd recently attended. They had a silent auction, with various baskets and other donated items, but each of the teachers had also donated a virtual basket to the auction.
The spanish teacher is a first-generation immigrant from Mexico, so she had donated a home-cooked mexican meal at her house.
The gym teacher is a hard-core climber, so he'd donated a day in the mountains doing technical climbing.
One lady had a real knack for second hand clothes, so she'd donated a day of thrift-store shopping and advice.

The idea got me wondering -- what would I put in the "basket" if I was in their shoes?
If someone wanted 4-8 hours of something uniquely me, what would I offer?

I kicked around a bunch of ideas, but they were really generic geek things (clean virus and spyware from your PC) and didn't really touch on anything that I love.

My favorite idea so far is to explain how things work -- kind of like The Way Things Work in real life.
You pick the thing, from your PDA to the blender to a garage door opener to, well, anything around your house. If possible, we'll take it apart, explain how the innards work, and put it back together again.

It's what I've been doing since I was very young, and it still captivates me. So much so that I find it strange when I meet someone who really doesn't care how things operate -- how can you not wonder?

Anyway, it's a fun question to ask oneself -- what would you be willing to offer for a good cause?

    • Sheesh, that's so last year!

Ok, I don't have much to say, but it's just kind of embarassing that my last entry was before Christmas.

There's a ton going on that's just plain work, but I've started goofing around in KML -- Keyhole Markup Language -- which is Google Earth's XML format. My company has oil/gas well data for the US and Canada, which I can spot into Google Earth.

If you take the depth of a well and flip it above ground, you can spin it around and see the geological layers in 3D, which is really nifty:

      sanjanlaplata3gz.jpg

North-Western corner of New Mexico, looking North into Colorado. They're all showing "M" because they're methane wells and that's the tag that I chose to put on the placemarks.

I was wondering why some poked out above the crowd, then I realized those are drilled on the top of a hill, so they've got to be deeper wells to reach the same geological formation.

The other fun thing is to take the Gulf of Mexico wells, and draw the lines from the rig platform out to the bottom of the well. They're directionally drilled, so the picture looks like 15,000' inverted spiders.

ANYway, that's what I'm doing for fun. How 'bout you all?

Did you ever find a joke that was awesome, but nobody around you would enjoy it?

I had one of those moments this afternoon.

Luckily, I have you all. And you all will love it:

      From bash.org:

silic0nsilence: So it's black friday at CompUSA.
      Slider: Yea
silic0nsilence: We were to open up at 12am. It's 11:58pm and there is a HUGE line of blood-thirsty, hard drive-wanting, maniacs. So my friend dares me to scream we have one xbox360.
      Slider: Holy shit.
silic0nsilence: So he gives me $20. I go up to the gate and scream, "LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, WE HAVE JUST RECIEVED ONE XBOX360!!" Immediatly people are storming the gate, passing me money through the cage to get it. They were screaming and knocked over this old lady. My boss just looks at me with these red eyes. In them, I saw fear and rage.
      Slider: Omg you dumb shit!
Slider: Wait a second, it's 12:46A, and it's black Friday. What did this happen minutes ago? Shouldn't you be at work?
      silic0nsilence: Yeah..
silic0nsilence: Pretty sure I don't work at CompUSA any more..

I'm flying to Calgary tomorrow AM -- be back Saturday evening.
It's a day of company meetings, then a company Christmas party Friday night, but the particularly noteworthy part of the trip is that it's REALLY FREAKING COLD there right now.

The high temp on Thursday is expected to be -16 C, which (for those of us who count normal like) is about 3 degrees. smiley7.gif

      Send warm thoughts.

      Work has eaten me.
Or perhaps the present tense is more apropos, since it seems to chew me up most days and spit me out in the late afternoon.

I'm working at a small company in Denver now -- it was three folks when I hired on at the beginning of October.
One lady was running all the marketing and business development, one guy was over all the IT infrastructure and wrote new apps, and the founder of the company managed the day-to-day interactions with customers and all the data update processes.
The only reason this company exists is that the day-to-day data update processes are a bitch. We suffer through that pain so our customers don't have to -- they just get clean, convenient data from us.
Anyway, that's what I hired into.
Then at the beginning of November, the founder of the company threw her arms up, gave 2-weeks' notice and left.

Now, I'm doing all that day-to-day crap that she had been doing, and it consumes my days. It would consume my evenings, weekends and nights if I let it, but I have the good sense to limit it to a normal work week and do the best I can in that time.

One of the most sad effects of this is that I haven't signed into the boards in weeks. For a time, I tried to pop into RvB every once in a while, but even that hasn't been happening for a week or two.

I miss you all dearly, and hope you're having fun.

Feel free to pass this along to anyone that knows me, and drop me email (OldSchoolGeek @ teh gMail) anytime.

      Peace,
      --Rob

A good friend, upon entering Australia, found himself in the normal customs checkpoint.
When his turn arrived, he went up to the counter for the usual set of questions -- anything you wish to declare? Are you carrying any foreign animals or plant species? -- that sort of thing.
The clerk asked him if he had any criminal convictions. He said "I didn't realize that was still a requirement."

yeah, that didn't go over too well.

Forgot to mention -- I qualified for my Brown Belt exam last night!
Testing will be the week of November 7, graduation on the Friday of that week (November 11)

A few months back, I mis-estimated the remaining belts. Here's the progression from here:
      Brown Belt -- early November
2nd Degree Brown Belt -- Early January
3rd Degree Brown Belt -- Early March
      Probational Black Belt -- May
      1st Degree Black Belt -- June/July exams

That's if everything goes well. If something comes up and I skip a belt test cycle, then everything slips by 8 weeks, and my Black Belt exams will be in the fall instead of the summer.

As for where I've been -- as of today, I have 14 belts for the belt rack, and I'm wearing the 15th.

Not a lot of time for a proper journal today, but here's a little something.

A good friend of mine is a pastor of a small church in Boulder.
This summer, the church did a project to build several benches for the Boulder Homeless Shelter. They looked really nice -- 10' long cedarwood, well finished, etc.
A few weeks back, they delivered the benches to the shelter and installed them. As they finished, they gathered to dedicate them in prayer.
My friend had an idea of what he wanted to pray, but hadn't scripted anything. One thing he really wanted to include was some prayers for the folks who would be spending time at the shelter, and he thought up the phrase "Lord, we pray also for the butts that will be sitting on these benches...."
Before he got to that part, he started to have some doubts -- what if people feel odd about hearing "butts" in a pastor's prayer? So he rephrased it right before the words leave his mouth. Instead, he said:
"Lord, we also pray for the bums that will be sitting on these benches..."

He should have stuck with "butts."

(no, none of the "bums" at the shelter were there at the time, and the director of the shelter understood what he MEANT to say, and was doubled over laughing, so no real offense done.)
