Because he's a horny bastard like that.

To be honest, a more accurate title would be, "I'm A Fucking Moron (But What Else Is New?)"

Because also in my box o' love I got yesterday was this bitchin' Star Wars mug:

      SBNmRLQ.jpg

And a lovely note from none other than @swooper74. Which I only saw today when I took the packagin/air pillows out of the box. Doh! So my previously anonymous thanks can now be properly directed! Thanks dude, you da bes.

    • Christmas Came Early

      JohnMatt

So Santa brought me a thing yesterday! Weirdly though he wasn't wearing his classic red suit. It was more of a light blue color, and less of a suit and more of a pants and jacket outfit. And he had some kind of eagle embroidered on the jacket? I don't know, casual Friday maybe. He also seemed to have lost a lot of weight. Maybe that's what Thanksgiving is actually for, to fatten up Santa in time for Christmas.

Anyway, the thing! It looks like this:

      leAVrOO.jpg

Well, the box looks like that. Shot of the actual thing:

      mPi23k6.jpg

Zombie head styled bowl. Pretty sweet! Now I can eat my brains cereal in style! Unfortunately the action shot is pending; I actually ran out of milk and need to buy some. You'd think a guy that works at a grocery store would be on top of that stuff, but being the weekend before Thanksgiving, I wasn't about to spend a minute more there than absolutely necessary today. Maybe I'll make chili and get really immersive.

But for reals, to whoever my secret Santa was, thanks bunches! I'm gonna put this to good use. Also you may be the most punctual secret Santa EVER. I could serve up some mashed potatoes or gravy or something out of this for Thanksgiving. Way to be!

    • I made some steak tacos

      JohnMatt

It went a little something like this.

Heating the pan (high), and oven (500 degrees). I actually leave the pan in the oven while it's preheating, no reason not to get a jump start on heating the pan. Not pictured, NY strip steak warming to room temp for about 15 minutes and liberal application of some kosher salt. Light coating of canola oil just before hitting the pan.

      sWOhBZY.jpg

      Set up some decent ventilation...

      bfZKBY5.jpg

...because there WILL be smoke. Also highly recommend moving smoke detector to another room.

      5rfh239.jpg

30 seconds each side for the sear, then move pan into the oven for 1 - 2 minutes per side, depending on thickness. After that torture, the meat needs to rest. 3 minutes at least.

      WpK06Dh.jpg

While the meat rests, lightly fry (or just heat without any oil if you want) some corn tortillas. I like using this small non-stick pan because I can use less oil.

      3d8uCgD.jpg

Cut da meat. I didn't temp it, but that looks good to me. Maybe slightly overcooked. It was a pretty thin steak.

      v0naTsx.jpg

Final product. Fried tortilla on the left, non-fried (baked?) on the right. Freshly ground pepper applied at this stage.

      WHCZEuy.jpg

Now, sure, you could cook some rice, cut up some vegetables, and stretch this into a meal for 3, maybe 4. I just had me to feed, and a whole steak. So I skipped all that.

      Good stuff, would cook again.

    • Just a crazy Arrested Development theory (Season 4 Spoilers)

      JohnMatt

Not sure exactly what episode this spoils up to, so consider it for the entire season to be safe.

In S4E4, Michael is describing the project him and Ron Howard are working on to Warden Gentiles. He says the following:

"It's basically a story about a fellow like myself, and his father, and their friend Carl Weathers."

And a minute later, talking to Andy Richter, he says, "There's more to it than that. It's about a young man trying to get out from under his domineering father while dealing with the slow death of his wife."

Now, all that sounds like the movie is focusing on Michael and his relationship with the rest of his family. And it likely is. But let's take another look.Later in that episode, Howard mentions that the father-son relationship that the movie is focusing on is between Michael and his son, George Michael. Well, what if the movie Michael was describing wasn't the one he was making with Howard, but in fact the same show he was acting in at the time (AD, Season 4)? Or maybe even an AD movie planned for after S4. So let's try to apply Michael's description as if George Michael was the main character.

"It's basically a story about a fellow like myself, and his father, and their friend Carl Weathers."

Well Michael did keep banging on in S4E1 about how similar he and his son were, right? Hmm.

"There's more to it than that. It's about a young man trying to get out from under his domineering father while dealing with the slow death of his wife."

It's certainly arguable that Michael has been domineering over George Michael and that GM is fighting that. But we run into a snag. How is GM dealing with the slow death of his wife?

But, wait... He got married to Maeby in S3E11. As far as we know, they're still married. There's no mention of a divorce or annulment in any episode in any season.

So, does that mean.... Maeby is dying? Surely not...

    • An odd legal question

in Forums > An odd legal question | Follow this topic

      JohnMatt

Suppose a male (Annyong) receives a transplant of a testicle from another (living) man (Barry).. The transplant takes. Let's assume (since such a transplant has not been known to take place, except for a single case involving identical twins) that this testicle continues to produce sperm based on Barry's DNA, and that Annyong's semen contains said sperm.

Now suppose a woman (Ann) becomes pregnant and a DNA test shows that Barry is the "father," in the sense that it was sperm carrying half of his DNA that combined with Ann's egg. Legally, who would be declared the father, given the following scenarios?

      1. Post-op, Barry no longer has any function testicles, and the pregnancy clearly occurred more than 9 months after the operation. As such, it can be proven that the sperm originated from Annyong's body.

      2. Post-op, Barry has one intact testicle, and as such is still able to produce sperm. However, there is strong evidence (?) to show that Barry has not had intercourse with Ann, and that Annyong has.

      3. Post-op, Barry has one intact testicle, and as such is still able to produce sperm. The two men, Annyong and Barry, have both had intercourse with Ann. The timing of their relationships offers no insight as to who's semen contained the impregnating spermatozoon.

Feel free to discuss either what you think the current legal answer is to the above question, what you think the answer to the above question should be (i.e. what SHOULD the law say), or both.

    • Mass Effect universe expansion idea

      JohnMatt

First off, obviously ME series spoilers up in here.

Also, this is entirely Mass Effect related. So if that doesn't interest you, I advise you not to continue.

And as a last warning, this is rather lengthy. Perhaps too lengthy, but whatever.

So, partially inspired by a Reddit post (here), here's a concept for expanding on the Mass Effect universe. I really have two concepts going here, but story wise, they're rather similar. I'm not 100% either way, but I'm leaning towards option two.

At this point, I just want to note that I fucking hate the blue coloration in the text fields on this site. Goddamn terrible. Moving to a word processor.

      Idea one:

The game takes place far in the future. You play as a member of the human race. After the conclusion of ME3, humans (and possibly other species? not sure on this one.... consider this as an option every time I say "human"/"humans") from the Normandy attempt to re-establish society, but are essentially reduced to pre-industrial era means (or perhaps worse, due to inbreeding). EDI becomes essentially useless, with the majority of her systems having been destroyed or damaged from the crash landing. After thousands of years, or perhaps hundreds of thousands, human civilization returns to the point it was at prior to finding its first mass relay (having FTL capability, but no access to mass relays), although maybe without any true knowledge of biotics (perhaps some humans exhibit biotic tendencies, but humans have not yet relearned how to control them). It would also be nice to see some evolutionary changes (positive or negative or neither) here.

However, due to the long period of time (and number of generations) since contact with the rest of the galaxy, humans have become divided into a number of factions. Note that based on the ending of ME3, this group of humans doesn't really know how the conflict played out. Some believe that the reapers did and still exist, and that humans should attempt to contact the rest of the now thoroughly cleansed galaxy to warn new species about the reaper threat. Others believe that the reapers did exist, but think humans should not bother to become involved in the rest of the galaxy. Instead, they should continue to develop their own civilization away from reaper influence. This group may hold the belief that the reapers were destroyed. A subset of this group think the reapers are still around, but that the new inhabitants of the cleansed galaxy would not believe their testimony regarding the reapers. A third faction would deny the existence of the reapers, believing them to simply be a myth. They instead push some form of religious doctrine (haven't really fleshed this group out yet). Obviously, not everyone would be firmly within one of these three groups, and there'd be a lot of people in the gray areas. There would also be several new sapient species that have been discovered, and members of those species would believe the human tales of the reapers to varying degrees.

The player would, depending on background and class choices, have different back-stories (obviously). Possibilities include 1) a scientist that has seen/knowledge of all the evidence of the reapers' existence and human history, 2) an enlisted marine with a family history of service, and 3) a member of some sort of religious monastery from a somewhat isolated, “secessionist” planet of human supremicists. And so our main character would have grown up in areas where one of the previously mentioned factions dominate the population, respectively. Despite the varied backgrounds, the game always starts in the same “hub” city, with the player having differing reasons for being there depending on their background. Maybe there are two key players in the plot that take up the backgrounds not selected by the player? Regardless, the rest of the game would play out with the player having various experiences and doing various things (SO MUCH HAND WAVING GOING ON RIGHT HERE), with the player ultimately having to decide whether or not to align with a particular faction, and also attempt to convince/motivate their civilization to follow their lead (or choose to have no particular impact). The game would conclude just after the climax (where the consequences of your actions would play out). For example, the final shot in a “let's rejoin the rest of the galaxy” ending would show a fleet of ships leaving on a journey to the nearest known mass relay, hoping that they have been repaired either by surviving humans, or by surviving reapers. Haven't fleshed out all the options of the ending here.

Phew. Okay, deep breath. The character limit is coming up relatively soon, so the second concept is going in the comments.

So, quick tour (note: some of the images got re-sized so they may be less than optimal):

The living room from the front door:

Between the living room and kitchen is a hallway:

      Which leads to the bathroom:
      35t4B.jpg

      And the bedroom:
      fvGNd.jpg

As you can tell I haven't completely finished unpacking. And I still need to acquire some furniture, like a TV stand and a couch. But it's liveable!

And now, to my secret santa: I've just moved into a new apartment, obviously, and apart from some large furniture items, I have just about everything I need. I am severely lacking, however, decorative items. So something decorative would probably be cool. But anything at all will do.

As far as interests, I enjoy video games in general (most recently that means Mass Effect/ME2), sciency things, hockey (the Rangers specifically), and just neat gadget type things in general.

Anyway, that's all for now. Gonna make the drive back "home" to grab some stuff I forgot and also to hang out with a couple of friends. In summary, it feels good to have a 10 minute commute instead of a 90 minute commute.

Hi, i'm a pro lurker in the PCE forum. I couldn't help but notice your comment in the PCE BAR.
My clock was also offset by 2 hours, and the difference somehow prevented me from operating certain programs once corrected. Another friend had the same problem, and at this point i'm just curious to see if it's a fuck up on the OS. Are you running windows 8 by chance?

      • JohnMatt

Yeah, using Windows 8. Mine appears fixed... I apparently had it set to the wrong time zone (or at least, the second time I looked, that was the issue). The first time it was off by some hours and also minutes, meaning it couldn't have been a time zone thing.

Appears to be fine at this moment, though.

1=blue 2=cyan 3=green 4=red 5=purple 6=yellow (coresponding colours to numbers from the cube.. I don't know if that was necessary or significant, but it seemed like that was the logical thing to do)

Actually, I thought about Skyping. I'm still trying to figure out what the best way to go about this would be, so it's kind of going to be a trial and error thing. Someone else suggested Ustreaming the movie so we can all watch it at the exact same time and chat in there, and Skype has been brought up as well. I plan on trying both of these in the coming weeks, but for the first one tonight I'm just going to leave the chat in a thread.
